Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2007-05-12

An easy read.... this book gives a quick introduction to intellectual property rights and application procedures. Not nearly as helpful as some other, thicker, "How to" books.

5 out of 5 stars A convenient concise OVERVIEW.......2005-04-06

This is quick 85-page overview of the patent process. It provides the key steps, requirements, and definitions in very plain terms (almost in the same style of language as the IRS's 1040EZ instructions). However, it steers clear from giving ADVICE. If you need advice, try Patent It Yourself, from Nolo Press.
Some of the information in this slim volume can be found at http://www.uspto.gov/. But this book brings it together in a very convenient and affordable package. It is worth the modest price!

3 out of 5 stars Government publication that needs a new edition.......2005-03-13

This is not the first place to start if you're interested in the patent process. The law is dynamic and this book was out of date years ago. There are many other books out there that will outline the basics in a much more reliable way. Look for a book that will discuss World Trade Organization provisions and other international aspects of IP law - otherwise it's too limiting. Never choose to file for a patent application yourself. Use references to educate yourself on the process and then if you want to pursue this expensive process (which can become more expensive if you make an error) find a registered agent or attorney.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2003-05-19

This book offers a simple, straightforward interoduction to patent law. If you are starting from scratch, this is a good place to start. There isn't much "how to" in this book, so it's probably best for someone who plans to work with a patent lawyer or service.

3 out of 5 stars Obsolete book.......2003-03-13

This book gives a decent description of patents, but it's out of date. For example, it says the head of the patent office is called "Commissioner" when that was changed and the head is called "Director" and the "Commissioner" is actually the third in rank (second is "Deputy Director"). The book says the USPatent Office handles 200,000 patent applications, but the number is actually closer to 300,000. There have been significant changes in the patent laws such as publication of applications, 20 year terms, WTO related provisions, NAFTA related provisions, WIPO and PCT related provisions, etc. that do not appear. So, take this book as background information only and know that in many instances it is obsolete. Recognize that patents are not a "do-it-yourself" activity if you want decent protection. See a patent attorney if you want accurate, up to date advice and worthwhile coverage. Stay away from the invention submission/promotion companies.

      Book Description

This volume offers a systematic overview of the different tools through which the human rights accountability of transnational corporations may be improved. It first examines the responsibility of States in controlling transnational corporations, emphasizing both the limits imposed by the protection of the rights of investors under investment treaties and the potential of the US Alien Tort Claims Act and other similar extra-territorial legislations. It then turns to self-regulation by transnational corporations, through the use of codes of conduct or international framework agreements. It then discusses recent attempts at the global level to improve the human rights accountability of corporations by the direct imposition on corporations of obligations under international law. Finally, it considers the use of public procurement policies or of conditionalities in the lending policies of multilateral lending institutions in order to incentivize TNCs to behave ethically. Altogether, the book offers a rigorous legal analysis of these different developments and critically appraises their potential.

            Book Description

What is the nature and scope of corporate responsibility with regard to human rights? Should companies themselves be responsible for human rights violations involving themselves or their subsidiaries? What principles should guide business in countries known to violate human rights? Is self-regulation sufficient, or are corporations best regulated by national or international codes, and on what should these codes be based? These are some of the many questions which this ground-breaking collection of essays seeks to address as it assesses the value of applying human rights standards to transnational corporations. The increasing involvement of corporations in the public domain and the steady reduction of governmental involvement in commercial and social undertakings has created a desperate need to rethink the nature and role of the private corporation and its regulation. This volume, which contains a balanced collection of analyses from all interested sources in the corporate responsibility debate, is the result of a three-day conference during which government officials, corporate executives, NGOs, and representatives of inter-governmental organisations, as well as academic researchers, came together for the first time to discuss the emerging issues. The essays have been arranged under six broad themes: policy issues, regulation, issues of application, matters of doctrine, globalisation and case studies. In addition, each section contains the opinion (not simply a summary of proceedings) of a nominated rapporteur who draws together the strands of each theme, and, where necessary, broadens the analysis to cover important issues which may not have been addressed. At the heart of this volume is the attempt to define an effective framework for transnational corporate responsibility through international human rights standards. It will be of vital interest to corporate legal advisers, human rights practitioners, NGOs, government law offices and academics, as well as to all those concerned with human rights and their place in the modern world.

                                Book Description

The serious study of humor has burgeoned in the last two decades, spawning a wealth of publications touching upon an array of topics crossing national, cultural, and disciplinary lines. This research bibliography captures the vibrancy and significance of the field of humor studies while documenting its output. Organized into ten broad chapters reflecting types of humor and topics of humor research, it provides extensive bibliographies on forty-five fields of humor study, each introduced by an essay outlining trends and pointing to major findings. An appendix of humor research institutes, journals, scholars and academic programs as well as a subject and author index to the thousands of sources complete the volume. Intended largely for library use by scholars and students in humor studies, the volume's topical essays are valuable for text use in related courses; the work's extensive bibliographies will foster research in diverse fields with a focus on humor.

This is a collection of the scripts from Season 12 of Doctor Who, Tom Baker's first season. When one encounters this sort of material, it's worthwhile to see how much value-added there is. Is this just a simple reproduction of the scripts, or is there a significant amount of additional material? I am pleased to report that there is. For starters, the scripts themselves indicate the changes between the camera scripts and what actually made it on the air. But besides that, there is a season overview that discusses the casting of Tom Baker, the addition of Harry Sullivan as a character, and how the season was planned.

Then, with the individual scripts, the book provides background along the lines of the DWM Archive features, covering the development of the scripts, the production team, the production details, and a brief critique.

There are also numerous footnotes associated with the scripts, and my chief complaint with the book is that these are stuck at the end of each episode rather than at the bottom of individual pages, necessitating either a lot of flipping back and forth or a good memory if you choose to wait until after reading the episode to see what the footnotes say.

However, that's basically a quibble on what is an excellent book and a significant addition to my Doctor Who collection.

Not so much another retelling of a year of "Doctor Who" as the ultimate reference guide to Season 12 of the series, "Doctor Who: The Scripts, Tom Baker 1974/5" tells virtually everything you could want to know about the production and execution of "Doctor Who" in the first year of Tom Baker's tenure as the Doctor. Included here are the scripts (complete with changes made during shooting) for all 20 episodes across the 5 stories of the year, story histories, production notes, casting choices, transmission information, music notes, prop histories and inventories, scene sketches and maps, reproductions of newspaper clippings, notes on potential but unmade stories, changes made for American TV, audience reaction polls, and a ton of footnoting for just about every reason imaginable.

More than any other behind-the-scenes science fiction book I've read, this one really tells you what tough choices and concessions had to be made, why they chose person A over person B, what got cut for budgetary reasons (a common problem with Doctor Who) and what concessions (or lack thereof) were made for continuity. This book is a massive undertaking, and, indeed, authorship is spread between numerous people. If there is a question you want answered about Season 12 of Doctor Who, the odds are really good it's in here somewhere.

While I find it hard to recommend this book to the casual Doctor Who fan, it's invaluable to the die-hard Whovian or the student of film or TV production. This is simply the finest production book I've read and I dearly hope to see them tackle other seasons in the same way in the future.

Alot of people ask "why a script book?" I wondered myself until I got it.
It includes the complete shooting scripts including dialog & scenarios not used in the finished product.
It also gives behind the scenes insight to the filming of Tom Baker (Doctor #4's) First Season as the Doctor.
If you are a fan of the show, I would highly recommend it to you!

I was hoping for full scripts with particular inductions, however, most leave you to use your own induction and I was hoping to expand my "vocabulary".
There are interesting scripts for particular problems. Not being an expert, this is only my opinion, but I didn't find them all that creative.

5 out of 5 stars Pain and Hypnosis.......2005-01-06

Although there are many books on hypnosis and to a certain degree a rather long list of works on scripts for hypnotherapy, there are few good works on pain scripts. I was therefore surprised to discover Dr. Marlene E. Hunter, M.D. book entitled "Creative Scripts for Hypnotherapy."

Since 1976, I have worked in the field of hypnosis as a teacher, lecturer, researcher and clinician. Most of my work is in the fields of stress, relaxation, biofeedback, weight reduction and smoke cessation, my true interest is that of pain reduction. As I am not a medical doctor, I apply much of my work to friends, family and myself.

Marlene E. Hunter book is outstanding. Although $45.00 for 220 pages is a little pricey, I assume you get what you pay for in the world of publications. The book is basically a collection of scripts which the author has used over a period of 25 years. The work contains scripts for: sexual problems, phobias, fear, pain, psychosomatic disorders, asthma and other psychological and physiological conditions.

Reference to pain relief starts on page 65 and ends on page 80. I was hoping for more but perhaps later there will be an addition to this section. Her 1996 book, "Making Peace with Chronic Pain: A Whole-Life Strategy" is an excellent addition to her work on pain. Finally her work is divided into nine parts including: The Basic Basics, Getting Past Roadblocks, Pain Relief, Psychosomatic Disorders, Journeys of Self Discovery, Children, Habit Disorders, Sexuality and Rehabilitation. This makes it possible for readers to immediately find the sections which interest them the most.

5 out of 5 stars A rare jewel of a book for clinicians and other therapists.......2002-12-30

Using a wonderful array of metaphors the author outlines various strategies and mechanisms that physicians and other therapists might use to assist patients towards resolving or coping with a wide range of both physical and psychological suffering. The concept that all symptoms are psychosomatic was certainly an insight for me that has contributed enourmously to improving my own communication with patients both in and out of hypnosis. This highly practical guide effectively allows the therapist to adapt the scripts to an enourmous variety of situations. I have found the section on phobias and fears particularly helpful in treating the common needle phobia encountered in my own hospital practice.
As a clinician with no psychological background I would recommend this book not only to hypnotherapists but to any clinician who communicates with patients on a daily basis.
Each page is divided into a "script section" in the main body of the text and an "Explanation section" which enhances the scripts by detailing why phrases or words are used or spoken in a particular way for maximal effect. These additional pearls allow the therapist insights into how best to deliver the message.
In short - This unique book is user-friendly, practical and a delight to read.
