Book Description
From the moment that Master and Commander, the first of Patrick O'Brian's sequence of 20 novels about the 19th century British Royal Navy officer Jack Aubrey and his surgeon colleague Stephen Maturin, was published in 1970, critics hailed his work as a masterpiece of historical recreation. Called "the best historical novels ever written" by The New York Times, the books have sold more than 3 million copies. This first full-color illustrated companion to the Aubrey-Maturin series, timed to benefit from the release of the blockbuster Twentieth-Century Fox film adaptation starring Russell Crowe, explains the fascinating physical details of Jack Aubrey's fictional world. An in-depth historical reference, it brings to life the political, cultural, and physical setting of O'Brian's novels. Annotated drawings, paintings, and diagrams reveal the complex parts of a ship and its rigging, weaponry, crew quarters and duties, below-deck conditions, and fighting tactics, while maps illustrate the location featured in each novel.

It expands the O'Brian reading experience.......2007-09-25
I feel that it is a must have companion to:
A Sea of Words, Third Edition: A Lexicon and Companion to the Complete Seafaring Tales of Patrick O'Brian.
The books complement each other and in particular to the wonderful illustrations in this book helps to clarify and in places, expand the information that one finds in A Sea of Words.
Perfect company for the 'Sea of Words' .......2007-09-25
This informative, wonderfully-organized book is presently one of two on my coffee table and is picked up by just about all who visit.
Yes, I have all twenty (twenty-one) of O'Brian's works on Jack Aubrey's travels and travails and this text sets the whole collection off nicely.
Sweet.
tg.......2007-09-14
This is a fine complement to the Aubrey-Maturin series as it brings to life the action, locations, politics, etc about the period when the action took place by artwork, maps, tools, ship information and many other things that you read about but if you have this book when you are reading then it really brings everything to life. Highly recommended. Also recommend the Sea of Words and Harbours and High Seas: 3rd Edition, both by Dean King. The first explains the terms you wonder about when reading the series, and the second includes synopses and tracing of each voyage on maps. These are great.
Beautiful pictures.......2007-08-22
This is a good overall book for visual explanation for the O'Brian series of books. I enjoyed this book, but must admit that I was looking for something more in depth. I haven't seen anything better yet, but will keep hoping that someone will write something even better. There is a lot of ground to cover and although this is a good book, and I would happily purchase it again, I am still looking for more visual information that just doesn't seem to be out there.
A short overview of the sailing Royal Navy.......2007-01-24
If you have read every sailing naval action book already, there isn't a lot here new. But, if not, this is a good book to have either as a reference or a coffee-table piece- it can do either, and the illustrations are certainly good.

"Christ tells his followers to do unto others as they would have others do unto them," writes Judge John T. Noonan in the introduction to The Lustre of Our Country, his expansive study of religious liberty and its relationship with American law. "From such sayings a deduction in favor of religious freedom seems obvious; but such sayings have been contained in cultural contexts that made the deduction imperfect." Enter James Madison, whom Noonan argues, found the perfect phraseology to theoretically transcend cultural context and effectively circumvent lawful coercion, ultimately making him "the man primarily responsible for religious freedom becoming the first of our liberties."
Noonan thoroughly and artfully examines how the Madisonian ideal has been tested and assimilated over the years through various court cases, and how the First Amendment has influenced the struggle for religious freedom elsewhere, from revolutionary France to post-WWII Japan and Russia after the cold war. Noonan avoids becoming too dry, writing several chapters in a disparate voice (a brief autobiographical sketch, a letter from the sister of Alexis de Toqueville, and a chapter in the form of a catechism are highlights), illustrating how the notion of religious liberty has imbued every segment of our society. Noonan himself professes that freedom of religion is America's greatest contribution to the world.
Book Description
A New York Times Notable Book
This remarkable work offers a fresh approach to a freedom that is often taken for granted in the United States, yet is one of the strongest and proudest elements of American culture: religious freedom. In this compellingly written, distinctively personal book, Judge John T. Noonan asserts that freedom of religion, as James Madison conceived it, is an American invention previously unknown to any nation on earth. The Lustre of Our Country demonstrates how the idea of religious liberty is central to the American experience and to American influence around the world.
Noonan's original book is a history of the idea of religious liberty and its relationship with the law. He begins with an intellectual autobiography, describing his own religious and legal training. After setting the stage with autobiography, Noonan turns to history, with each chapter written in a new voice. One chapter takes the form of a catechism (questions and answers), presenting the history of the idea of religious freedom in Christianity and the American colonies. Another chapter on James Madison argues that Madison's support of religious freedom was not purely secular but rather the outcome of his own religious beliefs. A fictional sister of Alexis de Toqueville writes, contrary to her brother's work, that the U.S. government is very closely tied to religion. Other chapters offer straightforward considerations of constitutional law.
Throughout the book, Noonan shows how the free exercise of religion led to profound changes in American law--he discusses abolition, temperance, and civil rights--and how the legal notion of religious liberty influenced revolutionary France, Japan, and Russia, as well as the Catholic Church during Vatican II. The Lustre of Our Country is a celebration of religious freedom--a personal and profound statement on what the author considers America's greatest moral contribution to the world.

Excellent Survey of Religious Freedom in America.......2004-03-23
John T. Noonan, currently serving as Judge on the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, has written both a personal and historical account of the experience of religious freedom in American history. Noonan begins his book by giving an autobiographical narrative of his Catholic upbringing in Boston and how this affected his theological and political views on religious freedom. He discusses his difficulty in reconciling his belief, taught by his father and other intellectual mentors, in religious tolerance with the teachings of the Catholic Church, which asserted that it was the one true church and that it was the duty of the state to actively promote Catholicism as the only true religion. Noonan then draws upon his theological knowledge to argue, contrary to what his Church once taught, that the very idea of religious freedom is fundamentally a Christian one. Noonan sums up his argument:
"By the first century A.D. there is in the Mediterranean world a religionEhat carries the concepts of a God, living, distinct from and superior to any human being, society, or state; of obligations to that God, distinct form and superior to any society or state; of authorized teachers who can voice these obligations and judge any society or state; of an inner voice of reason that is one way God speaks as well as by His authorized teachers. According to these concepts as taught by this religion, each person, individually and not as part of a family, tribe, or nation, will have to account to God as Judge for every thought and deed. Collectively, these concepts are at the core of liberty of conscience and liberty of religion."
Noonan then turns to history. In the Introduction to the book, Noonan put forward the argument that "free exerciseEs an American inventionEever before 1791 was there a tablet of the law, a legal text guaranteeing to all a freedom from religious oppression by the national legislature." Noonan now goes on to demonstrate the evidence for this claim. He traces the settlement of New England, the religious oppression of the Quakers and the Baptists, and then tells how religious liberty came about from these early conflicts. Noonan writes that:
Plymouth and the Bay Colony provided an ideal and a rhetoricEhode IslandEnd PennsylvaniaEhowed that organized government could exist without supporting a churchEand] Maryland provided the phrase [free exercise] that is at the core of the First Amendment. All four colonies demonstrated that the Church of England could tolerate other forms of Christian worship and so prepared the ground for the English Act of Toleration.
Noonan demonstrates that it was the pluralism of the colonies and the diversity of religious sects that contributed in large part to the development of religious freedom in early America. This "proliferation of sects" gave colonists "a variety of alternatives to the established" churches, which "created political constituencies that politicians had to consider."
The book then turns to the legacy of James Madison and how he has so influenced our views on religious freedom. Noonan gives a mini-biographical treatment to Madison, describing his early religious training and somewhat sudden entry into colonial politics during a critical time in our nation's history. The reader cannot help but to sense the author's deep affinity for Madison and his legacy. Noonan gives special treatment to Madison's role in crafting the American concept of church and state matters.
Noonan then goes on to describe early 19th century American church and state relations through a fictional sister of Alexis de Toqueville. Contrary to Toqueville's, Democracy In America, Noonan argues that church and state interacted in a manner that was not exactly in keeping with the Madisonian ideal. Government at this time was very closely involved with religion and supported it in a number of ways that could be construed as respecting an establishment. Noonan also describes the abolitionist movement and how this crusade was firmly rooted in American Christianity, at least the Northern variety.
Noonan focuses a large portion of his book dissecting and examining the legal aspect of church and state matters and religious freedom as a whole. He keeps the readers attention by a fictional dialogue between 'Harvardman' and 'Mr. Simple.' There are several interesting observations made by Noonan during this quite extensive examination of jurisprudence relating to church and state matters. One of the most intriguing is:
"Ceremonial deism was the court's description of prayers by a legislature, prayer at the opening of a court, and of 'In God We Trust' imprinted on the coinagesEust as Secular Humanism was nonreligious practice that was called a religion, ceremonial deism was religious practice that was not to be called a religion. The court created a kind of American Shinto, a state religion that for establishment purposes was a non-religion because its purposes were secular."
One could only conclude after reading such an argument that the Supreme Court has indeed established a religion appropriate for government support at the exclusion of all others. Is this not what Madison and others warned us would happen if the state took it upon itself to delve so deeply into religious matters as our courts recently have? Noonan argues his point but at the same time allows the reader enough leeway to decide on his own.
The book concludes with four examples of how the American concept of religious liberty has impacted the world EFrance, Japan, Russia, and the Roman Catholic Church. The final example brings us back to Noonan's own beginnings, or where the first part of the book left off. In 1965 the Roman Catholic Church formally adopted, after centuries of persecution of 'heretic' sects, religious toleration. Beyond the significance this event served for the author, it provides an appropriate closing to the topic of religious freedom and certainly a monumental one in human history as a whole.
Another scintillating Noonan book!.......2001-01-27
The first book by John T. Noonan, Jr., that I read was his tour de force, Contraception: A History of Its Treatment by the Catholic Theologians and Canonists, which I finished reading on June 5, 1967, finding it an exemplary study of a fascinating subject. On June 16, 1973, I read his Power to Dissolve: Lawyers and Marriages in the Courts of the Roman Curia. Each year I pick a book which I consider the best book I read that year. For the year 1973 I awarded Power to Dissolve the greatest book of the 55 books I read that year. When I saw The Lustre of Our Country I knew I could not go wrong reading it, and I was right. Other reviewers have written well of the book, but even if you do not read the entire book--its chapters are able to stand alone--read Chapter 7, entitled "The Pilgrim's Process." It is a dazzling and devastating critique of the Supreme Court's meanderings in dealing with the religion provisons of the First Amendment. This is an excellent book, and anyone interested in its subject will be rewarded in reading it.
A masterpiece by a great Jurist and philosopher.......1999-08-27
One of the ironies of American Constitutional history is that many of our greatest jurists have never had the opportunity to sit on our highest court. One thinks of such obvious examples as Learned Hand, John Johnston Parker,Arthur Vanderbilt, Roger Traynor, and John Minor Wisdom. John T,. Noonan, currently a senior judge with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, clearly deserves to be ranked in this select company( as does his philosophical antipode, Richard Posner of The seventh circuit). This book, remarkably lucid, remarkably learned and remarkably humane, constitutes the culmination of Noonans historical, legal and philosophical reflection.Other reviewers have already indicated the riches of this fine books contents. I will only note that I learned something new, or encountered a fresh and startling argument, on almost every page. Noonan has thought deeply about democracty and human freedom, not only in America, but in other countries as well. The chapters on France, Japan, and Russia show an understanding of the cultural political, and religous life of those nations which borders on the extraordinary. The chapter on Tocqueville( told through the literary device of an imaginary account of America written by Tocquevilles equallly imaginary sister, Angelique,) is quite brilliant, and opens up new perpectives on Tocqueville. All in all, a great book. One hopes for more from Judge Noonans learned and humane pen.It is truly amazing that mediocrites such as Breyer, Kennedy, Ginsburg and Souter sit on the court, while this deeply patriotic and brilliant man has to preside over the often humdrum cases of the ninth circuit.
Purpose is to alert readers to unexpected special qualities........1998-11-28
This is a very special book. Its subject matter is weighty, its intent serious, its disciplines--law and theology--address issues of grave import. The purpose of this review is to alert potential readers to qualities as to which a more adequate review is likely to leave them unaware. The text of the "Lustre" is not ponderous. Instead navigation of the thicket of ideas which the text presents tends to leave the reader refreshed rather than drained. Eccentric and various in its organization and modes of presentation, this book frees one from captivity to a prescribed routing and invites navigation after one's own bent. Subtle logic combines with a pervasive historical sense. Events permeated with paradox and tragedy are presented with insight and wit. Not an easy read; but rewarding. As in the case of Whitman's Leaves of Grass, a reader of this book touches the life of a very special American.
High points for historical accuracy.......1998-10-13
You'd expect this book to be either a paen to conservative values, or a completely dry legalistic review. It's neither, which is really wonderful. The first chapter suffers from bouts of overdetail, but once you get past that, the book blossoms into a very interesting pastiche of historical facts and musings reported in an unconventional array of styles that really hold your attention. Besides, where else would you read about the treatment of Jews in the Massachussetts Bay Colony?? A highly original read.

Book Description
The detektiv, Russia's version of the murder mystery, has conquered what in Soviet days loved to call itself the most reading nation on earth. The first full-length study of the genre, Russian Pulp vividly illustrates how Russians understand law-breaking and crime, policemen and criminals in ways wholly different from those of Westerners. After explaining why solving a crime is always a social function in Russia, Anthony Olcott examines the staples of thrillers-sex, theft, and murder-to demonstrate that Russians see police officer and criminal, thief and victim, as part of a single continuum: all are products of human imperfection. Offering a unique window into Russian society and culture, this book is intended for all students of Russia, from those making first acquaintance to those who have worked for years to understand this puzzling country and its people.
Customer Reviews:
50 pages of information crammed into 250 pages of text........2005-07-04
Anthony Olcott wrote one of my favorite detective novels with a Russian setting, Murder at the Red October, so it was with much anticipation that I began reading his distillation of the "detektiv" genre of Russian fiction. In general, one can say that Mr. Olcott's valuable insight into the genre is to point out that a Russian's view of the world is not the same as a westerner's and that we just do not comprehend things in the same manner. While we, for example, generally tend to regard individualism as good and collectivism as bad, a Russian is very likely to hold the exact opposite view.
Mr. Olcott cites numerous - in fact, far too many - examples of this from various authors of Russian detektivy. Repetition may be the mother of learning, but re-repetition is just filling up space.
What was especially disappointing, though, was Olcott's thinly veiled attacks on those western authors who write works of fiction with a Russian setting. He disingenuously admits that these authors are successful and have sold millions of books, but he then attacks them for their egregious inaccuracy, especially in matters of Russian language usage. (Hint: Olcott is a professor of Russian.) It seems no one is spared, including Albeury, Clancy, Hyde, Ignatius, LeCarre, et al. The obvious answer, of course, is that these authors write commercially for a non-Russian audience that merely wants a good read. Those readers want as much accuracy and truth in their fiction as possible, but who in his right mind would ever expect true insight from anything written, for example, by Tom Clancy? Criticizing these authors for lacking something they never claimed to possess in the first place is just being petulant.
What's more, I expect that buyers of Olcott's Russian Pulp mostly want an examination of Russian authors' detektivy, not a criticism of the Russian-related fiction of American and British writers. Instead, though, Olcott devotes an entire chapter to this petty nit-picking. In any event, he should already know that he's preaching to the choir.
Olcott wears two hats, one as a writer of award-winning mysteries and the other as an academic. In Russian Pulp it seems that a pedantic academic has won out over the accomplished fiction writer.
Disturbing insights into the nature of Russian democracy.......2002-05-14
Russian Pulp deserves a wide audience. Regrettably, it probably won't find it unless more people come to appreciate its wide ranging implications.
Although ostensibly "about" the Russian detective novel today, the real value of this gem of a book lies in the author's splendid grasp of what the Detektiv genre tells us about Russian democracy today. As Olcott demonstrates, Russian detective novels reflect rampant cynicism and distrust of law, individualism, capitalism and materialism. Rather empowering the reader to help "solve the crime", through the use of clues and evidence, as Western detective novels typically do, the Russian detektiv is little more than a "morality play" designed to show that individuals cannot ignore the will of society.
Reflecting conditions and mores in Russia today, the detektiv depicts good cops as people who are willing to bend the law, while criminals are often portrayed as people who have the temerity to want to improve their own circumstances (the "zero-sum" implication being that, sooner or later, the society will suffer as a result).
For anyone who cares about democracy, Russia, US-Russian relations, public ethics, and many other matters, this is a lively, well-written book that will offer fresh, if disturbing insights, on every page.

Duchovny: Yes. This book: NO........2000-12-27
I love David Duchovny, don't get me wrong. However, I could barely make it through his biography. It's written in a very disjointed fashion, and everything mentioned is so out-of-order. It's also VERY outdated; so it's not even really worth getting now. The picture section, I will admit, is awesome; some of the best photos of David yet. The X-Files episode guide is extremely outdated; it only goes to season 3. 5 years ago, this book would have been a joy for me to read. But being madly in love with David Duchovny, I already know most of what was in there. If you want anything recent on David, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. The mediocre writing quality and ancient episode guide really isn't worth it.
This is a great book for all fans of the show, "The X-Files".......1999-09-13
In the book, The Duchovny Files, you will learn about David Duchovny and how he became one of T.V.'s greatest actors. This book is packed full of information having to do with both David, his work, and The X-Files. In reviewing books about the show, I have found this to be one of the best books ever written. It is a great book for both fans and non-fans of the show to read! If you are a beginner of the show, I suggest reading this book, and The Anderson Files. Both books will caputre the minds of the readers. If you are a fan of the show, then you will be facinated with all the information this book gives out. It is packed full of Mulderisms and Scullyisms, a special section with facts from the show, and Lots of Color Photos! Remember that, "The Truth Is Out There," and keep on believing in the truth!
ooooooooooooooh.......1999-08-10
Now David Duchoveny, he is a truly engrossing person, both in looks and in talent. And the x-files, that is a truly engrossing show, the only television program that is, I do believe. Duchoveny portrays Mulder excellently and this book is nice and informative about both Mulder and Duchoveny.
The Duchovny-ite's Bible!.......1999-08-06
This is by far the best book I have ever read about David Duchovny, and Shakespeare aside, my favorite book EVER! I truly view it in the biblical sense. It is indispensible! I carry it with me practically everywhere, and am constantly flipping through my dog-eared pages for quick reference into something. There is a funny internet section, instructions for the X-Files drinking game, a complete David Duchovny filmography, several candid interviews, an exceptionally well-written biography, color photos, a fabulous episode synopsis, lots of gossip about David's personal life (written in a polite, non-voyeuristic fashion), Mulderisms/Scullyisms, etc. I could go on and on! David Duchovny is so interesting and poetic, and Paul mitchell does an excellent job with this book. A difinative masterpiece!

Great Bible.......2006-02-22
I have more use for this bible than any other out there...lol.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the price, which I thought was a bit steep. Other than that, I hope the info in here pays for the book in profits gained...we shall see.

Bring your note pad..........2006-01-07
Greg Holden covers a very wide range of eBay topics. The best way to read this book is with a pen and note pad close by. Pick a chapter and jot down the key points - or better yet, jot down your new ideas! We have been selling for two years, and still saw 2-3 things per chapter to add to our program.
