Book Description
David R. Hawkins details how anyone may resolve the most crucial of all human dilemmas: how to instantly determine the truth or falsehood of any statement or supposed fact. Dr. Hawkins, who worked as a "healing psychiatrist" during his long and distinguished career, uses theoretical concepts from particle physics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory to support his study of human behavior. This is a fascinating work that will intrigue readers from all walks of life!

A valuable tool in the area of personal growth .......2007-10-14
Hawkins' discussion of kinesiology testing is very comprehensive, and can serve as a valuable tool in the area of personal growth. My wife and I use this methodology on a regular basis to assist us in making decisions in our lives. It is not something we rely on 100 percent to actually make the decision, but we do indeed consider it to be an important tool to apply in the decision-making process.
A useful perspective.......2007-10-13
Other than the fact that this book could have been edited a bit, it provides an easy to read and understand formulation of one of the basic factors in the human psyche. Like another favorite of mine "Learned Optimism" this book provides insight not normally found in todays pop-psycholgy or self-improvement books.
Authors like Wayne Dyer ask readers to "trust" what is presented as true, try it out and see what happens. Dr. Hawkins on the other hand uses a fairly reliable methodology that is simple enough anyone can use it, kinesiology. You don't have to be a trained psychologist to try kinesiology testing in it's simplest applications. Test this with a friend or spouse, have them put out their arm and think to themselves "I am strong and deserving" then try to push down their arm at the wrist. Then have them say to themselves "I am weak and undeserving" then push on the arm again. You can do this test over and over with the same results. What we think DOES effect us physically. But this book takes this idea much farther into many aspects of our lives from the food we eat to the politicians we elect.
Great food for thought.......2007-10-03
Actually I would give this 4 1/2 stars because this book is written so assertively it may be a turn-off for those who would be receptive to exploring its ideas.
Think of "Power Vs. Force" as an intellectual version of "The Secret," in that it includes scientific discussion and heavy-hitting authorities to posit similar ideas.
No matter what your opinion, this book deserves great credit for putting some extremely interesting ideas out there for discussion and debate. The cover of the book looks like you would have to be an Ivy-League professor to crack it open, but this book would actually be a great book club selection because it would open the door for a fantastic discussion.
A fun and interesting book to read, even if you don't agree. Recommended.
Incredibly important read..........2007-09-15
This book is wonderful. It's a must read for anyone in the alternative healing arts. I'm a physicist and this book answers so many of the skeptics arguements about our connection to the universe and does so in a very grounded way. Should be required reading for all thinking persons...
Powerful! (Not forceful!).......2007-08-29
I'll be honest with you. Some of the finer points in this book are over my head. But I do understand that when we come from a place of love, joy, peace, and acceptance, we have much power to manifest our desires than we do when we come from a place of fear, greed, pride, etc. In fact, the way I see it, love (and its associated states of being) are our only TRUE power -- a power that can manifest miracles -- and everything else we experience in life is just a matter of "force," and the consequences of force. I was first introduced to this idea in a book called Row, Row, Row Your Boat: A Guide For Living Life In The Divine Flow. Power vs. Force really expands on this idea, though, and I think it's an important book for all to read.
Book Description
Is the public getting a good deal when the government contracts out the delivery of goods and services? Phillip Cooper attempts to get at the heart of this question by exploring what happens when public sector organizations--at the federal, state and local levels--form working relationships with other agencies, communities, non-profit organizations and private firms through contracts. Rather than focus on the ongoing debate over privatization, the book emphasizes the tools managers need to form, operate, terminate or transform these contracts amidst a complex web of intergovernmental relations.
Cooper frames the issues of public contract management by showing how managers are caught in between governance by authority and government by contract. By looking at cases ranging from the management of Baltimore schools to the contracting of senior citizen programs in Kansas, he offers practical information to students and practitioners and a theoretical context for their work.
At every turn, the author avoids bogging readers down in technical jargon. Instead the book sheds light on a crucial part of any public manager's job with lively case material and no-nonsense guidance for making the most of taxpayer dollars.

Not a vary interesting text.......1999-01-21
I had to buy this book for my college course and I found it wasn't relevant to my prefered job industry. This book is not interesting. And I recommend to the authors, that they rewrite this in terms that make it more iteresting to students.
Book Description
Yikes!! Boomers will do anything and everything to stop the aging process - including talking to God
Boomers are jogging on the treadmill of life; racing toward the 50 year marker, one reaching it every 7.5 seconds. Whew! No wonder the government is concerned whether there will be enough in the social security fund to ensure these 78 million boomers are supported and succored on the tit of government insanity. Though the government may be concerned, boomers seem more preoccupied with maintaining their appearances, trying to look 30ish, rather than worrying about retirement. That is - if Pippin's and Mulhearn's book is to be believed.
Pippin and Mulhearn use their book, Yikes!! My Butt's Falling to illustrate the poignant extremes boomers go to in their attempts to stay young. The authors speak in one voice as an interviewer gathering stories from friends, far and wide. Some very wide, as illustrated by Virginia who huffs and puffs on a treadmill during the day and eats Dove Bars in a little room off her closet by night.
This book addresses many burning issues besides looking young, issues such as hot flashes, heavy hair on upper lips (not men's), mood swings, all during the pause that refreshes - menopause. There are characters such as Pete, the sidewalk sailor, who knows every wind current downtown so he can sidle along next to buildings, preventing his comb-over from blowing straight up like a big hairy horn; and George who now wears earplugs to the movies and hates the huge speakers those snot-nosed kids put in their cars, though he used to drive a VW Van with huge speakers, an 8-track player, and a box full of the latest and greatest tapes.
One of the cleverest characters winding his way throughout the book is a very funny, sometimes glib, and frequently profound...God. He's available to discuss the most shallow of issues, "...I'm getting old. Look at these crows feet!" to the most heartfelt..."why am I here?"
Pippin and Mulhearn remind us that getting old can be fun, though it definitely is poignant. Yikes!! these characters really are us.
Customer Reviews:
This book will make Boomers say "Yikes!".......2000-04-03
It will take some time for Baby Boomers to move beyond our denial about aging. The Yikes! authors name the fears and expose some of the creative ways Baby Boomers are avoiding "old age". This book tells it like it is -- it challenges the reader to lighten up and laugh. It helps ease the trip over the proverbial hill. Kudos to Pippin and Mulhearn!
Delightfully humorous reading.......1999-08-13
A delightfully humorous book, YIKES!! MY BUTT'S FALLING, by Robyn Mulhearn and Aleta Pippin, creates a setting familiar to many of us! It includes "interviews" with old friends, college classmates and others, with the interviewer sharing with them that she's writing a book on baby boomers and how they feel about getting older. With a tad of philosophy tossed in, the responses are so close to reality that we, the readers, can laugh at ourselves! Most of us, of course, do not care to admit that we are getting "older," but as shown by those being interviewed, it is obvious! Diet practices, cosmetic surgery, exercise techniques - they are all there. Be ready for some good wholesome laughter with this book!

Succeeding in Music: A Business Handbook for Performers, Songwriters, Agents, Managers and Promoters.......2007-08-08
This is an excellent book. All the tools necessary for success are included here. Stiernberg even gives you the format and ideas for a business plan, which is essential for any serious entrepreneur. Everyone in the music biz should get this book.
A Musician's Business Plan Textbook.......2007-03-01
I've read too many music business books that try to be all things to all musician readers and end up being shallow overviews of the industry. Succeeding In Music focuses on one thing and does it thoroughly. At its core, SIM could be called a musicians textbook for writing a business plan. Each chapter takes you through the steps necessary to make a legitimate small business out of whatever your music venture may be. If you're looking for cute anecdotes or secrets to getting a record deal, this book is not for you. In fact, it's a rather dry read. But if you want to make a serious business out of your band/record company/studio etc., then this book is the first step that must not be skipped. It IS a workbook, so it will take some work. I found the sample plan at the end of the book to be particularly helpful, and the enclosed CD-ROM contains all the forms and worksheets found in the text. This book is a necessary edition for those of us who want a music career and are willing to do the dull stuff it takes to get there.
Great.......2006-05-20
A great title detailing the ropes for all the people involved in producing a hit record. Given that so many people are involved in the producing cycle, starting from the songwriter to the promoter to the performer, it is hard to collect all the information into one title. Fortunately John Stiernberg succeeded in putting all that is needed for producing hit records into one title, explaining the parts of all the people involved and detailing each role with real life examples.
Good book, but impractical at times.......2006-05-15
This is a good commentary on the business side of the music world, but at times the contained advice seems somewhat impractical. It seems like you're being told to do something, but not how to do it. However, lots of the philosophy and viewpoints held within the book are worth reading. If you want some more specific help, check out "How To Make A Fortune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!".
A Great piece of work.......2006-04-21
I highly recommend this book to gain greater insights in the Music business or any business. It was a great buy along with a couple of manuals I purchased from Musicbrains.net entitled the Indie label Kit.
Book Description
Since its birth in the 1960s, the study of popular culture has come a long way in defining its object, its purpose, and its place in academe. Emerging along the margins of a scholarly establishment that initially dismissed anything popular as unworthy of serious study-trivial, formulaic, easily digestible, escapist-early practitioners of the discipline stubbornly set about creating the theoretical and methodological framework upon which a deeper understanding could be founded. Through seminal essays that document the maturation of the field as it gradually made headway toward legitimacy, Popular Culture Theory and Methodology provides students of popular culture with both the historical context and the critical apparatus required for further growth. For all its progress, the study of popular culture remains a site of healthy questioning. What exactly is popular culture? How should it be studied? What forces come together in producing, disseminating, and consuming it? Is it always conformist, or has it the power to subvert, refashion, resist, and destabilize the status quo? How does it differ from folk culture, mass culture, commercial culture? Is the line between "high" and "low" merely arbitrary? Do the popular arts have a distinctive aesthetics? This collection offers a wide range of responses to these and similar questions. Edited by Harold E. Hinds, Jr., Marilyn F. Motz, and Angela M. S. Nelson, Popular Culture Theory and Methodology charts some of the key turning points in the "culture wars" and leads us through the central debates in this fast developing discipline. Authors of the more than two dozen studies, several of which are newly published here include John Cawelti, Russel B. Nye, Ray B. Browne, Fred E. H. Schroeder, John Fiske, Lawrence Mintz, David Feldman, Roger Rollin, Harold Schechter, S. Elizabeth Bird, and Harold E. Hinds, Jr. A valuable bibliography completes the volume.

Here is a different perspective............2006-10-13
I read the other reviews and was really looking forward to reading this book. I was very disappointed. After you have read one chapter, you have read the whole thing. Let me summarize for you: Dean is super talented and didn't like to, or need to rehearse. Greg Garrison is a genius. All of the guest stars were wonderful and were amazed that Dean did not rehearse. All the women loved Dean. The end. I just saved you several hours.
Backstage at the Dean Martin Show.......2005-09-09
Enjoyed the book very much. Had alot of pictures of guest, and a year by year acount of when they were on.
Dean Martin Show Book is excellent.......2005-08-05
This book is very detailed and it goes behind the scenes to tell you really what happened on this great old Thursday night program. Dean worked very hard....LY!
Nevertheless, it's a magical ride thru great television lore.
Dean Martin was one of the greatest entertainers ever placed in Hollywood. He will long be remembered for these shows as well as the Roasts ( that gets reviewed as well in the book).
PERFECT BOOK FOR THE MARTIN FAN!
Adding to the Dino Enigma.......2002-08-15
I buzzed through this book and was completely fascinated by the backstage comedy/dramas of putting on "The Dean Martin Show." I'm still floored by a Jimmy Stewart quote on page 131 of the hardback edition: wow. Thank you, Lee Hale, for naming names.
If you were around to see Dino's shows or the roasts, this book will open your eyes to a lot of what happened behind the scenes and give you some insights into many celebrities who showed up on these stages.
And at the center is the enigmatic King of Cool himself, the star who breezed in and out only for the show's taping, kept a photo of himself with Cardinal Spellman over his dressing room bar, kept even the closest people guessing whether that was apple juice or liquor in his glass.
The more you learn about Dino, the less you knew him--and the cooler he seems for it.
An enjoyable look at Dino's TV career.......2001-07-07
Lee Hale, who staged most of the musical portions of Dean Martin's TV variety shows, takes pains to explain that the show's relaxed, effortless charm was really the result of shrewd pre-planning by the production team, so the star seldom had to worry about anything. Hale takes us through these intricate logistics and the miraculous results, telling us which celebrity guests were solid professionals, and which were less so. There are a few surprises here -- one seemingly sweet and humble comedian appears to have been a Class-A jerk offstage. Hale also touches on the Dean Martin summer shows (not enough information about this two-season hit, unfortunately) and the Dean Martin celebrity roasts (which ultimately eclipsed the variety series). The text is at its best when the author describes "The Dean Martin Show" at its height; Hale's enthusiasm soars and anecdotes flow when the show is going like gangbusters. The later chapters are more distant, reflecting the author's disappointment; we never quite know why Martin went into decline personally and professionally, and the author's memory is hazy at least once (second-banana Lou Jacobi is misidentified as Abe Vigoda). Readers expecting a no-holds-barred expose will be disappointed that Hale seldom shoots from the hip; his overall tone is affectionate and restrained. Fans who recall "The Dean Martin Show" will like this book most, but there are enough show-biz tidbits and photos to intrigue the casual reader. All in all, a very enjoyable book.
Product Description
"This is the story of what happended backstage and behind the scenes in those joyful years when Dean was such a success. It is also the story of three distinctively different men who worked closely together in the production of that show."
Book Description
This handy reference describes techniques and tricks needed to illustrate LaTeX documents, and answers common user questions about graphics and PostScript fonts. It provides the first full description of the standard LaTeX color and graphics packages, and shows how you can combine TeX and PostScript capabilities to produce beautifully illustrated pages. Following the successful format of
The LaTeX Companion, this new book is an invaluable LaTeX resource for people incorporating pictures into text.
You will learn how to: incorporate graphic files into a LaTeX document, program technical diagrams using several differant languages, produce color pictures, achieve special effects with fragments of embedded PostScript, and make high-quality music scores and games diagrams.
You will find detailed descriptions of: important packages like Xy-pic, PSTricks, and METAPOST; the standard LaTeX color and graphics packages; PostScript fonts and how to use them in LaTeX; the dvips dvi to PostScript driver; and Ghostscript, the free interpreter that lets you view or print PostScript files even if you do not have a PostScript printer.
The authors examine a number of packages that extend or modify LaTeX's basic illustration features, and present hundreds of examples of useful solutions to graphics and font problems. In addition to packages for general drawing, the book also presents specific tools for mathematicians, physicists, chemists, engineers, and people interested in games and music typesetting.
All the packages and programs described in this book are freely available in public software archives, and the source code for all examples has been placed on CTAN, the TeX archives (details on page 497).
Customer Reviews:
Good Examples, quite incomplete.......2004-04-27
Many times in this book I've seen exactly what I want to do, but the LaTeX code is not always shown. I use this book as a hint to what can be done, and then I search on the web for LaTeX examples. I am fairly disappointed, and often find myself more frustrated after reading a section than I was before.
As an example (for those of you who have the book), Figure 4.1 is referenced as an example of how to use \multido, but the book does not have (or I could not find) the corresponding LaTeX.
Like the JC Penny catalogue: a wish book.......1999-06-10
I would have to hazard a guess that this is probably the most advanced LaTeX book on the market. It is lots of fun to look at with its many esoteric uses of LaTeX--typesetting bridge or chess game diagrams, music notation, optical illusions--in other words, stuff that I wish had enough time to learn but probably never will. However, I do find myself looking at this book more than I initially imagined because it is quite useful on subjects such as fonts and the "dvips" program. For these areas, you'll definitely find things to learn and use even if you aren't ever going to typeset Mozart's lost symphony or fiddle with Encapsulated Post-Script code at the primitive command level.
Almost Perfect.......1999-01-15
Nicely crafted guidebook to the graphics and fonts. PSTricks, color, chess, chemistry and music - helps you to typeset all of it, and more. My only complain is that the chapter on fonts is vague at places - because the book tries to be so encyclopedic, I guess
LaTeX graphics bible.......1998-05-12
If you use LaTeX and are serious about including graphics in your documents, then this is the book to read. I've never seen a more complete and readable explanation of using graphics with LaTeX.
However, I don't recommend that raw beginners use this book. You really need some knowledge of LaTeX to understand what's going on. If you're an advanced user, THE LATEX GRAPHICS COMPANION is indispensible.
for serious (La)TeXnicians.......1997-11-30
If you have reached the state in which you typeset with (La)TeX just to ``have fun'', this book is for you. It is fun and exciting to read.
