Prescription for Nutritional Healing by nutritionist Phyllis A. Balch and James F. Balch, M.D., has long been considered one of the most trusted, comprehensive sources on the mind-boggling array of vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other dietary supplements now available. Working from the premise that a good diet promotes good health, this third edition of PNH still starts with the basics: consume fresh produce, grains, and lean meats; avoid foods that are processed or high in saturated fat; cook using glass, stainless steel, or iron--never aluminum; and drink filtered water. The authors also stand by their claim that the government-prescribed recommended daily allowances are ridiculously low, and that the book's optimal daily intake for nutrients should be followed instead.
So what's new in the third edition? Along with now-accepted remedies, like zinc and echinacea for the common cold, the Balches also explore many of the newer supplements to hit the market: SAMe (recommended for depression and joint pain), phosphatidyl serine (mental acuity), red yeast rice (cholesterol), and 5-HTP (weight loss, insomnia, depression). You'll also find an expanded chapter on alternative therapies that encompasses Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, along with a hefty section on pain control that offers a grab bag of options such as acupuncture, biofeedback, guided imagery, chiropractic care, and massage.
Still, the bulk of the book remains the more than 250 health conditions--from everyday problems such as insect bites and bad breath to serious diseases including bulimia, cancer, and AIDS--and the nutritional protocols the Balches recommend for treatment. Since any number of supplements can be taken for the same condition, the Balches make sifting through the glut of information a little easier by separating their nutrient recommendations into four categories: essential, very important, important, and helpful. And they take a lot of the guesswork out of buying supplements by listing the brands they know and trust. Once again, the authors have squeezed in an impressive amount of information, including valuable sidebars on topics such as the dangers of aspartame; how to choose a calcium supplement; common heart problems and procedures; cancer risk factors, diagnosis, and treatments; and sports nutrition. This is not relaxing reading, but it's enormously useful. While the material can be dense, the authors still manage to present it in a straightforward manner that's understandable even for readers without a medical degree. --Norine Dworkin

Okay, but not great.......2007-10-11
I thought this book was okay, but I wouldn't call it a classic. I did hold onto it, and it is on my bookshelf, but I rarely refer to it. When I do, it's just to get a basic description of an illness, not for the remedies it recommends. I felt like it just repeated what everybody else is saying, and didn't really have any original information to offer.
Prescription for Nutritional Healing 06.......2007-10-04
I am not a devout herbalist, but I don't like to take a lot of medications either. If I can heal myself or prevent problems with diet, exercise, therapies, vitamins, minerals, or herbal supplements, then I would prefer to!
I wanted one natural healing book. Just one- for reference. So I read through a TON of books at 2 different bookstores and at Whole Foods. I choose this one because it covered SO much.
It has sections on almost 300 ailments (for example: anxiety, hair loss, hypoglycemia, arthritis, stress, migraine, depression, indigestion, flu and bee-sting) and it lists the vitamins, minerals, and herbs good to use for each problem. Compared to my internet research, it recommends many of the same things and more. I love that it also gives advice on what not to take, what not to mix, how much, and what problems can arise (no other book seemed to do this as well). In addition, there is info on diet, exercise, and alternative therapies. In the front of the book, she explains herbs, minerals, the different types of enzymes, and more. I also enjoy the essential oils list in the back.
It is a little confusing when she lists some supplements by Brand Name (I don't like that). And the herbs are more of a post script to each list, but if you want more on herbs she does have a separate book just for that ("Prescription for Herbal Healing").
I am happy with just this one book- plus the advice of the wonderful folks at Erewhon and Whole Foods (who, as it turns out, reference this same book!).
Great Reference Tool.......2007-09-28
What I love about this book is how thorough it is. Not only does it cover a lot of ailments, but when it lists helpful supplements, it explains exactly how they work, recommended dosage, and the importance of it. It also give suggestions for lifestyle changes (for example, foods to avoid, the importance of exercise, etc.) Amazing. It's organized well, you can look things up by ailment OR supplement.
My go-to reference for family health..........2007-09-22
I have a bachelors degree in holistic health, and was introduced to this book years ago when I first began studying alternative medicine. I have used this reference time and time again in treating myself and my family for common ailments. It never fails to yield useful information, always directing the reader to conventional medicine for more serious illnesses. An extremely useful tool for family healthcare.
Great Reference.......2007-09-18
This is a great big book with a wealth of information about a great number (a few hundreds) of ailments, what causing them, and how to deal with them the natural way. With close to one thousand pages this is a complete resource of medical problems from A to Z. It is well researched, well referenced, and well written. It is also very simple to use, all ailments being ordered in alphabetical order. It is an excellent reference book, a health bible that should be readily available in each household. If you have a health problem I suggest checking what this book will tell you about it, before going to your doctor.
Another book that I also highly recommend is Cure the Incurable

A look at America.......2000-02-17
This review refers to the Russian language edition of the book.
Most books about America tend to be strongly negativistic. This one is different. As an emigre, Aksenov stands exactly at the border between an outsider and an insider -- the best place for observation. His view is deeply personal, yet honestly trying to be objective. The effort results in a good book with a fresh-eye view. I wish there were more books like this.
Book Description
Spectacular symphonic suite, scored for large orchestral forces and a wordless chorus, is divided into 7 movements, the music of each embodying the astrological and mystical qualities of a different planet. Remarkable emotional sweep and innovative techniques have made the work a staple of the orchestral repertoire. Only full-size score available.
Customer Reviews:
Planets Suite Score.......2007-05-07
I have recieved my score for the planets suite and this score is just what I wanted. The book is about A4 size and is very easy to hold, read and handle. The print size is fine for studying the score or just scanning while you listen. I am very happy with my score.
Outstanding Study Score for a fair price........2007-03-09
What more can be said about Holst's masterpiece "The Planets" which has not already been said been? To be sure, the music is a work of genius; therefore, I wish to comment more about the quality of Dover's printed score. This publication is a quality product. The engraving is primo (a reproduction of the 1921 Goodwin & Tabb Ltd. original); it is easily legible, accurate, and looks wonderful. Obviously, the original engravers were at the top of their game on this one, and Dover has done a terrific job of transferring the plates; it's as clean as one could wish for in an affordable study score. Even in soft-cover, the binding is durable and the pages lay flat. The inclusion of a commentary or brief analysis would have been a welcome addition, but that is a very small gripe against an otherwise fantastic publication. I give it my highest recommendation.
Review.......2006-03-15
I went through this score several times with multiple recordings and it is to the tee. All the movements are in the book, in concert order, the score was written out in the proper key. If you're trying to find a score for the Planets, This is the one without having to buy the actual performance score.
a beautiful edition.......2006-01-03
Clean, clear, large print, handsome edition of this well known and loved classic. Lists instrumentation on every page (some editions don't list the score instrumentation except for the first page. This often makes score study [especially big orchestral works like this or R. Strauss] very hard to read).
Great price as well.
Very Good Score.......2005-08-04
This Dover score presents everything in a clear and easy-to-read way even though Holst wrote some interesting things that are difficult to notate by ear! The score does open up a new world - listening to it and reading/watching the score are two different things. I was completely unaware of Holst's gigantic forces and his wonderful orchestration that is present in the score.
There's no see through on the pages (and where there is, it is only minimal). Main languages are English and Italian terms. For an 80-year old score, it's pretty impressive and in very good condition. A very good buy I must say for $10 - my friend had to pay close to $70 for her copy (both of which are exactly the same). A great bargain!
Book Description
From the ominous, relentless march of "Mars, Bringer of War" to the ethereal high-string sonorities of "Venus, the Bringer of Peace," this spectacular symphonic suite established Holst's international reputation as one of the most popular and important modern British composers. First performed in 1918, it remains a staple of the orchestral repertoire.

Book Description
This book is the first comprehensive guide to Holst's orchestral suite The Planets. It considers the music in detail and places the work in its historical context, describing the circumstances of its composition and its meteoric rise to popular acclaim. Starting with Holst's particular interest in astrology, Greene reveals a profound statement of human character and Holst's own psychological journey toward the mystical state. Using parallels in the verbal and visual arts, Greene weaves here a fascinating tale of musical communication.

Book Description
Rising Damp: The Complete Scripts celebrates the writing that brought Rising Damp a best situation comedy BAFTA. For the first time, the scripts from all four series of Rising Damp have been collected together. There's an introduction to the book by Eric Chappell, the award-winning creator of the show, and each individual script is introduced by show business writer Richard Webber.
Customer Reviews:
The Best Book of Scripts I've Read to Date!.......2002-05-14
Never have I enjoyed a book of scripts more than this one, which contains the original scripts to the entire series (28 episodes in all) of Rising Damp. I say the "original" scripts because changes were made to some of the scripts during rehearsals, during filming, or prior to transmission. In addition to minor changes, an entire scene was eliminated in a few cases, and in at least one instance a scene was added, and it is interesting to read the scripts the way writer Eric Chappell originally intended.
While the dialogue in the scripts is clever and witty and makes for enjoyable and relaxing bedtime reading, it is particularly nice to have the scripts for reference in conjunction with viewing the series. There is a large amount of physical comedy in the series which is at most only alluded to in the scripts, with phrases such as "Rigsby demonstrates" or "Rigsby winces." Although I appreciated Leonard Rossiter's comic genius the first time I saw the series, my appreciation has only deepened for having read the scripts. It wasn't until then that I realised just how very little guidance was provided in the scripts and conversely how very much of the interpretation and antics were down to Rossiter himself. As Chappell himself says of Rossiter: "I may have provided the words, but he provided the punctuation. His whole body would form a question mark, the twist of his head was an exclamation, his eyes blazed italics, and the open-mouthed stare was a line of dots going into infinity" (p. 9).
Another nice feature of the book that sets it apart from the other books of scripts I've come across is the introductory materials provided by Chappell. There is a two-page general introduction and a further two pages of comments on the actors. There are also 3-4 pages introducing each of the four series, wherein Chappell tells us specifics about the creation of each series and the episodes. Much of the information provided will be familiar to those who have read Richard Webber's excellent tribute book, Rising Damp A Celebration. Nevertheless, there is much fresh material in this book, particularly regarding the specifics of individual episodes.
Finally, this 543-page book contains 16 pages of photos, 14 of which contain colour stills from the series and 2 of which are b/w shots of Chappell. The book concludes with a cast list for each episode and includes the dates of recording and original transmission as well as rehearsal locations. Highly recommended to fans of the series.

Implementing Sap With an Asap Methodology Focus very usefull
You buying a magazine.......2005-05-05
Basically you are buying a magazine, not a book. You will read it once if you are absolutely new to ASAP and then you will never return to it. If you take this book and "SAP Planning - best practices in implementation" (the opposite extreme with 700+ pages but very good) and combine them together and then split in half - you will get something absolutely unbeatable.
Very generic and no substance... .......2005-01-06
Very generic and not much for substance. Think of this book as an overview with some obvious tips... but what do you expect in 164 pages?
