Mari Frank's book is a great step-by-step guide for preventing identity theft and protecting your personal information from misuse. And for those, like me, who have already had their identity stolen, "Safeguard" can be an excellent tool for rebuilding your life.

Frank is an expert in the field of identity protection, who combines the experience of a triumphant victim and the knowledge of a seasoned attorney. But she writes in a style that is easily understood and enjoyable to read.

Highly recommended for everyone.

Book Description

Jorge Bonilla is hospitalized with pneumonia from sleeping at the restaurant where he works, unable to afford rent on wages of thirty cents an hour. Domestic worker Yanira Juarez discovers she has labored for six months with no wages at all; her employer lied about establishing a savings account for her. We live in an era of the sweatshop reborn.

In 1992 Jennifer Gordon founded the Workplace Project to help immigrant workers in the underground suburban economy of Long Island, New York. In a story of gritty determination and surprising hope, she weaves together Latino immigrant life and legal activism to tell the unexpected tale of how the most vulnerable workers in society came together to demand fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect from employers. Immigrant workers--many undocumented--won a series of remarkable victories, including a raise of thirty percent for day laborers and a domestic workers' bill of rights. In the process, they transformed themselves into effective political participants.

Gordon neither ignores the obstacles faced by such grassroots organizations nor underestimates their very real potential for fundamental change. This revelatory work challenges widely held beliefs about the powerlessness of immigrant workers, what a union should be, and what constitutes effective lawyering. It opens up exciting new possibilities for labor organizing, community building, participatory democracy, legal strategies, and social justice.

1 out of 5 stars ridiculous.......2006-02-20

Uh, the author is a lawyer, which means her first obligation is to uphold the law. This means gathering up the illegal aliens and getting them out of the country, quickly. Instead, this "lawyer" decides that it's more important to figure out how to screw what remains of middle-class America in order to get "rights" and such for the criminals. Nice.

5 out of 5 stars A Call to Action.......2005-09-20

This book is many things - a history of immigration, a story of politics, and a study of law, public policy and activism. Above all, it is a call to action - an inspirational, educational guide to effecting social change. Suburban Sweatshops illustrates the enormous impact of one person's efforts to aid a disadvantaged and largely unnoticed segment of American society - immigrant workers - not by fighting for them, but by organizing and empowering them to fight for themselves. As Gordon recounts the events preceding the Workplace Project, and leading to its inception, she acknowledges the horror of the relatively few well-publicized atrocities against immigrant workers. Yet such incidents of "super-exploitation," Gordon submits, are only the most graphic illustrations of an infinitely more obscure problem - a web of appalling injustices so frequent as to seem an almost inevitable aspect of immigrant workers' lives. Gordon reveals these injustices in a variety of ways, supplementing examples of particular immigrants' living and working conditions with statistics that emphasize the pervasiveness of such situations. Most compelling, however, are Gordon's gripping portrayals of immigrants' personal stories. In her direct and elegant style, Gordon introduces the reader to a series of individuals whose experiences, though poignant, are studies in strength, courage and ambition. Many of these anecdotes are the result of Gordon's personal involvement in, and exposure to, the lives of her subjects. Her sympathy and respect for the people whose lives she documents are evident, as are her high expectations of them. Gordon describes the development of the Workplace Project in equally balanced terms. Her pride in the enormous success of the project is apparent, and well-deserved. Throughout the book, however, she offers a candid assessment of its challenges and limitations. This book is truly essential reading for students and professionals in the fields of law, sociology, government and history. It will serve as an indispensable reference to anyone seeking to enact social and political change. It will serve as an inspiration to anyone who reads it.

4 out of 5 stars Breaking new Ground.......2005-06-21

While I understand another reviewer's complaint about the book not being national in scope, and not telling us a lot about the daily lives of immigrants. But the discussion of legal and organizing strategy is far from arcane or dry. This is really a story about the ongoing process of democratization in our country--which the book makes clear is far from complete (something it would be useful for President Bush and other global democratizers to remember). The book provides a very insightful and thorough examination of how workers in the so called informal and underground economies learn about, use, and deepen their rights in the United States. It also makes a compelling material and moral case for why they deserve those rights. Heartwarming personal stories are nice, but this book expanded my own understanding of the politics of globalization at the micro level. It would make a great case study for college teachers to use with undergrads because it combines an immediate issue with theoretical and philopsophic substance.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2005-03-26

Suburban Sweatshops is a captivating, honest and well-written examination of the workplace abuses, struggles and hard realities facing so many working men and women in the United States--and the efforts of community organizers and advocates to create a space where workers can unite to improve their conditions and change the balances of power. Gordon details the valuable lessons learned through her unique and pioneering experience founding the Workplace Project, and examines the challenges and obstacles facing the growing workers' rights and immigrant rights movement. As an organizer working in the trenches of immigrant and workers' rights in Texas, I can say that Gordon's book is as real as it gets! The book hits all of the key themes and points, and will no doubt be seen as a groundbreaking insight into many of the challenges and issues that will face our society for many years to come. This is a must read!

4 out of 5 stars The new face of american labor.......2005-03-17

Jennifer Gordon's Suburban Sweatshop is a compelling portrait of the changing face of labor and workers in America. With graceful humility Ms. Gordon tells the stories of Americans' newest immigrants and their struggles against abuse, threats, and the denial of basic employment rights. Set in the suburb of Long Island, New York, Suburban Sweatshop is the continuation of the struggles that all immigrants have historically faced in finding dignity in the work that no one wants. Suburban Sweatshop is also a moving story of how a small organization, the Workplace Project, organized landscapers, domestic workers, factory and restaurant workers in an effort to challenge the pervasive abuse that they faced. Ms. Gordon's contribution is timely, inspirational and reaffirms a basic American goal; the opportunity to work and contribute.

                  Book Description

For more than forty years, science fiction, fantasy and horror have been captivating television audiences around the world. The imaginary worlds of Star Trek, The X-Files, Xena: Warrior Princess, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer have become resources for lucrative multimedia franchises, their fictions extending beyond television into films, novels, video games and a wide range of other merchandise. Cult television series, once associated with small and marginalized groups of avid viewers, have stormed the mainstream. Television, Cult and the Fantastic considers the commercial success of cult television series in relation to other multimedia cultural phenomena such as Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. The book examines their genres, themes, textual and marketing strategies, relating these to wider debates about audiences and consumers, the culture industry, technologies and storytelling. Students taking courses in television studies, cultural and critical studies, cyberculture and cultural ownership will find this a fascinating introduction to cult TV.

For all that's been written in recent years about the Christian Coalition, Promise Keepers, and other conservative evangelical movements in the United States, perhaps the most important institution among them--James Dobson's enormously popular radio program Focus on the Family--has not received its due from secular observers. Paul Apostolidis hopes to change that with Stations of the Cross. This is an academic treatment, and the first chapter begins with a deadening line: "Marx famously concluded his Theses on Feuerbach by declaring..." Yet there's plenty of rich thought on these pages for readers interested in the Christian Right and willing to plow their way through some jargon.

In a useful introduction, Apostolidis describes Dobson's rise and appeal: he's not a Pat Robertson or Jimmy Swaggart-like figure, but a bestselling child psychologist who devotes much of his airtime to parenting advice rather than politics or sermonizing. In addition, his "almost complete avoidance of the medium of television has been instrumental to his image as the one conservative evangelical leader with class and a clear conscience." Apostolidis is certainly no fan of Dobson's--this is a left-wing critique, and at times an extremely negative one. Yet he strives for objectivity. Even when he's discussing something he clearly finds troubling--such as Dobson's views on "curing" homosexuals--he doesn't resort to a condescending tone of irreligious judgment. He does, however, suggest that Dobson's rhetoric of Christian compassion is out of step with a politics of rolling back the welfare state and battling racial preferences. And, interestingly, he proposes overcoming Christian conservatism not with secularism, but with a form of liberal religiosity. There's a more accessible book to be written on this subject, but the analysis in Stations of the Cross is original enough to make it worth reading, especially by followers of People for the American Way and similar organizations. --John J. Miller

                    Book Description

Since the 1970s, American society has provided especially fertile ground for the growth of the Christian right and its influence on both political and cultural discourse. In Stations of the Cross political theorist Paul Apostolidis shows how a critical component of this movement’s popular culture—evangelical conservative radio—interacts with the current U.S. political economy. By examining in particular James Dobson’s enormously influential program, Focus on the Family—its messages, politics, and effects—Apostolidis reveals the complex nature of contemporary conservative religious culture.
Public ideology and institutional tendencies clash, the author argues, in the restructuring of the welfare state, the financing of the electoral system, and the backlash against women and minorities. These frictions are nowhere more apparent than on Christian right radio. Reinvigorating the intellectual tradition of the Frankfurt School, Apostolidis shows how ideas derived from early critical theory—in particular that of Theodor W. Adorno—can illuminate the political and social dynamics of this aspect of contemporary American culture. He uses and reworks Adorno’s theories to interpret the nationally broadcast Focus on the Family, revealing how the cultural discourse of the Christian right resonates with recent structural transformations in the American political economy. Apostolidis shows that the antidote to the Christian right’s marriage of religious and market fundamentalism lies not in a reinvocation of liberal fundamentals, but rather depends on a patient cultivation of the affinities between religion’s utopian impulses and radical, democratic challenges to the present political-economic order.
Mixing critical theory with detailed analysis, Stations of the Cross provides a needed contribution to sociopolitical studies of mass movements and will attract readers in sociology, political science, philosophy, and history.

                        1 out of 5 stars Illustrator 9 for Dummies.......2005-07-21

This book was difficult to get information out of due to the constant attempt to make every thing humerous. Found it to be more frustrating than useful.

                        1 out of 5 stars I'm no dummy!.......2001-12-24

I only got 2 chapters into this book and closed it with the thought.... Why not give me step by step ways of doing what you show on the page. This book just has a glossy overview of it's features, but the author falls short in giving clear steps in the process of duplicating the book examples.

I returned it and ordered Adobe's book. I'm hoping it's better.

3 out of 5 stars This is not a book for beginners.......2001-08-14

I've been using Illustrator 8 for awhile and decided to pick up this book to come up to speed with Version 9. In fact, I bought it because the reviewers on this site recommended it so highly. Unfortunately, I disagree with the other reviewers: this book is a real disappointment.

One thing I expect from a book like this is an overview of the various tools, but the author never summarizes the tools or their icons in one central location. Descriptions are scattered throughout the text. As you go through the various procedures to create artwork, he refers to these tools but forgets to show a picture of the tool he refers to. This forces the user to go through the toolbox until they find the right tool and even then, I am not positive because the tooltips don't always show up. I write user documentation for a living, and while the dummies books don't fall into the same class, I still expect basic information at my fingertips.

The information on paths is poorly explained. Truthfully, it is a difficult topic, but Alspach does nothing to make it easily understood and this concept is the heart and soul of the program!

In good conscience, I cannot recommend this book for beginners. Spend your money on something else.

5 out of 5 stars Went from dummy to expert in just a week!.......2001-04-05

I purchased this book for my new student worker. He was able to go through the book in about 40 hours and learned the basics of Illustrator 9 in that time. He was able to start from clicking on the icon to finishing a drawing in this time frame. This book has even helped me in learning some of the new features in version 9 and I have been using Illustrator for 13 years.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a book for beginners-something for everyone.......2001-03-23

The day I got this book, I turned to page 1 and started reading. Two hours later, I had made it only to page 80. Why? Because this book is DENSE and FULL of tips and tricks that will expand the horizons of the beginning or intermediate designer. I spent a lot of time studying the numerous examples in order to soak up all the information that was being presented.

I've been using Illustrator since 1992 and now teach it at a community college. And yet with every turn of the page, I learned something new.
