Book Description
When an Oklahoma tornado rips through Lan Harding's life, destroying her beloved marina Shared Winds, Lan must somehow find a way to rebuild her business and her world.
Lan's hopes and dreams are perilously close to dissolving unless she can find a contractor to rebuild her business before a season without revenue forces her to close her doors forever. But with such widespread damage throughout the area, Lan's frustration mounts as the lack of available contractors becomes apparent.
Then, Emma Bishop, daughter of the most renowned contractor in the county, steps in to offer her services. The offer seems like an answer to Lan's prayers until she learns of Emma's inexperience and ulterior motives...
As the two women work closely together to rebuild the marina, each is caught unaware as something else begins to threaten their contractor-client relationship. Despite their best efforts, a smoldering caldron of emotion and desire begins to bubble up through the icy Oklahoma winter...

Unsatisfying.......2006-06-10
I am a fanatic reader and enjoy books by Pat Conroy (Prince of tides), Isabelle Allende and Dan Brown.
I found this book extremely superficial, without any depth and even though the concept and story sounded like a good idea it really left me completely cold. The style of writing is immature and predictable, and from the first page I knew exactly what's gonna happen. I know it is a first novel, and I truly hope the next one will be much better. I will not take the chance however. The other reviews made me think it could only be family and friends who can be so gentle. I will only recommend this to people who are into commercial bubblegum stories and not serious readers.
Satisfying.......2005-11-26
A timely book! A tornado destroys Lan Harding's marina, Shared Winds, and her dreams along with it. She needs to rebuild or face the complete loss of her business but there is a shortage of contractors because of all the damage.
After Lan has been turned down by everyone who could do the rebuilding project properly, Emma Bishop shows up wanting the job. She is trying to prove herself to her father, the top contractor in the area, so that she can take over his business when he retires.
Lan hires Emma but has mixed feelings about this because of Emma's agenda, and it takes a while for these women to warm up to each other. As they rebuild the marina their feelings also get an overhaul and they gradually fall in love. This is a warm-hearted, touching romance with believable characters and a satisfying ending. The author writes at a pleasant pace and keeps her focus on the changing dynamic between the two women. Shared Winds is a good first novel and I look forward to reading this author's next book.
The Back Cover of This Book Does Not Do It Justice..........2005-07-25
This book is so much more than the back cover even begins to imply. Lan Harding is a Cherokee woman who seems to live on the outskirts of her community. When her marina is destroyed by a storm, there are no contractors available to help her rebuild. If she doesn't rebuild she will lose her business and her life will change completely.
In walks Emma Bishop. Emma's father is one of the contractors who has refused to help Lan. Emma explains that she needs to prove to her father that she can do this job well so he will sell his business to her instead of a stranger when he retires later in the year. These women may be each others only hope for a future, so they both stand to win if Lan hires Emma to do the job.
As they rebuild the resort called Shared Winds, the women begin to also rebuild parts of themselves. They find they have much more in common than this project and can't help but fall in love. Neither will admit her feelings at first, but jealousy, longing, and a near-death accident help them open up.
Fantastic first offering by this new author. This reader is looking forward to her future releases.
Pleasant and Relaxing Read.......2005-07-01
While Mother Nature isn't too kind to either main character, the gentle flow of the plot, the character's dialogue and interaction had me not only wondering about the fate of the damaged marina/resort, but also the women, their friends and the lake community.
The gentle spiritualism and quiet determination of both characters really played off each other well. I was rooting for Emma to make the deadline and for Nan to complete the restoration of her boat and her heart.
I happily found myself relaxed and engaged with this story. If I see another book by Ms White, I'll be sure to take a look.
Kept me reading well past Midnight.......2004-12-16
Shared Winds, besides being a wonderful romance, teaches us that perserverance and believing in oneself can overcome even the most difficult odds.
Its characters are as real as sitting across a table and sharing your dreams and desires with your best friend. Or falling in love with that special someone even though you try your best not to.
Kenna White injects humor into her story that caused me to smile as I followed her characters through their journey. Her well thought out dialogue and descriptive narrative kept me reading well past the midnight hour.
Reading to me is like watching a movie in ones mind and Shared Winds gets my nomination for an "Oscar".

Book Description
Partners in Conflict examines the importance of sexuality and gender to rural labor and agrarian politics during the last days of Chile’s latifundia system of traditional landed estates and throughout the governments of Eduardo Frei and Salvador Allende. Heidi Tinsman analyzes differences between men’s and women’s participation in Chile’s Agrarian Reform movement and considers how conflicts over gender and sexuality shape the contours of working-class struggles and national politics.
Tinsman restores women to a scholarly narrative that has been almost exclusively about men, recounting the centrality of women’s labor to the pre-Agrarian Reform world of the hacienda during the 1950s and recovering women’s critical roles in union struggles and land occupations during the Agrarian Reform itself. Providing a theoretical framework for understanding why the Agrarian Reform ultimately empowered men more than women, Tinsman argues that women were marginalized not because the Agrarian Reform ignored women but because, under both the Frei and Allende governments, it promoted the male-headed household as the cornerstone of a new society. Although this emphasis on gender cooperation stressed that men should have more respect for their wives and funneled unprecedented amounts of resources into women’s hands, the reform defined men as its protagonists and affirmed their authority over women.
This is the first monographic social history of Chile’s Agrarian Reform in either English or Spanish, and the first historical work to make sexuality and gender central to the analysis of the reforms.
Book Description
The key unifying conceptual tool of this important entry in the study of efficiency and productivity is the directional distance function. In
New Directions the authors take up this new performance measure while also maintaining their "traditional" axiomatic production theoretic approach.
The directional distance function includes traditional distance functions and efficiency measures as special cases providing a unifying framework for existing productivity and efficiency measures. As a generalisation of the traditional distance functions, it turns out to be a dual to the profit function, opening a range of new tools for empirical and theoretical research. It also provides enough additional flexibility to open up new areas in productivity and efficiency analysis such as environmental and aggregation issues.

Mildly Amusing.......2004-05-15
Although Robert Martin Walker tries to tear a page from Jeff Foxworthy's famous "You Might Be A Redneck If..." routine, the results are hardly in Foxworthy's laugh-out-loud league.
The problem, really, is that individual churches within the United Methodist Church tend to be extremely diverse in tone and emphasis. Depending on the church, you might find yourself in a hysterically conservative, wildly liberal, or casually moderate congregation. Consequently, it is extremely difficult to find one-liners of the "You Might Be..." variety that will resonate with United Methodists across the board.
For myself, as a member of the United Methodist Church I found this small, short book harmless but only mildly amusing at best. If you actually want an idea of the humor you might encounter at a United Methodist Church, you'd really do better to drop in on a UMC pot-luck dinner.
GFT, Amazon Reviewer
are you talking about me?.......2001-10-23
I found this book to be amusing, but a number of the jokes about Methodists could easily be applied to many of the mainline Christian denominations. Ah, well, Methodists have never been known for being very funny.
an overpriced pamphlet.......2001-07-09
I grew up in the Methodist Church, and my parents are life-long devout Methodists. We often joke about "methodizing" and Methodist ways -- so natually, I thought this would be a funny treat for my Mom. I was disappointed -- the book is full of one-liners, most of which present the Methodist church as a liberal, female-friendly, ecumenical organization. Granted, the church has (thank goodness) become must more open-minded over the years, but not to the extent this booklet implies. I could relate only to one or two of the jokes, and even they were lame. I didn't find any of them laugh-out-loud funny. No doubt, the Methodist Church is large and congregations and practices vary from church to church. I'm sure that there are a handful of Methodists out there who might find this funny. However, even though I have attended several Methodist churches over the years, I didn't particularly relate to this, nor did I find it funny. I wouldn't recommend purchasing this little cheaply-produced booklet (which looks like a freebie you could pick up the on the shelves in the narthex, right next to the Upper Rooms -- and it's not even blessed with a nice paper cover or any four-color illustrations) unless having something titled says "You Might Be a Methodist If . . . " is, in & of itself, amusing to you.
Very funny -- but not long enough!.......1999-04-07
Great one liners. Leaves you wishing the book was longer with more punch lines!
So true!.......1999-03-12
A clever and fun look at our denomination--every page hit home. As a life-long United Methodist and a PK, I could readily identify with each amusing observation.

Customer Reviews:
THE MUST-HAVE OF ITS FIELD.......2002-01-16
Every field has its classic work, and this is it for brass instruments. Not definitive, because nothing could be, but the linch-pin of the library as far as brasswind instruments go.
Great book for brass history.......2000-04-02
When I ordered this book I was expecting something that closely followed the form Baines had used in his Woodwind Instruments and Their History. This was not to be the case. Instead, it is a detailed history of the brass family from prehistoric time to the modern valved era. This is not quite as exhaustive of a book as I was looking for (something that dealt with modern valved brass). With all that said it is still a marvelous book and full of usefull information.

Book Description
The pressures and demands of professionalism and commercialization have transformed all Britain's major sports, particularly at the end of the 20th century, when they have been packaged and marketed as mass entertainment for a national or even international audience.
This volume explores different facets of this phenomenon: from the postwar years when terraced or pavilioned spectators applauded a dying breed of "gentlemen" footballers or cricketers, playing at the highest level just for the love of the game, to the 21st-century when highly paid sportsmen and sportswomen endeavour to satisfy the inflated expectations of officials, agents, journalists, broadcasters, and above all, those viewing or listening at home.
Sports historians demonstrate the centrality of their subject to the study of modern Britain by focusing on the impact of professionalism on rugby, golf, athletics, and horseracing, as well as cricket and the "national game".

Customer Reviews:
Somewhat Useful.......2007-09-16
I thought that this book was sort of useful in some sections, but others did not fit my lifestyle at all and some of the good ideas seemed to reveal too much to me (wearing a suit jacket with no shirt.) That sort of exposure is considered inappropriate in the circles I run in.
Quite a let-down.......2007-03-26
I've enjoyed Trinny and Susannah's other books and picked up quite a few tips from those, but this book has me shaking my head. Worst is the career-dressing advice: it might be fine if you've got an entry-level position, but if you're at a managerial or professional level, forget it!
For one thing, Trinny and Susannah seem to have a strong allergy to suits or, for that matter, any clothes that are conservative or classic. Well, trendy doesn't work for everybody, and it doesn't work all the time. Some of their "don'ts" work as well as, or even better, than their "do's". And some sections are overlong; do we really need numerous versions of skiwear and after-ski wear?
Not what I expected.......2007-02-21
Perhaps it is because the show is UK based but I was taken aback by some of the after pictures. Alot of dresses over pants and very outlandish hats are shown as do's.
Some of the befores don't look too bad other than the dated 80's look which I think we all know not to wear. I would have preferred more tips on handling body types rather than the obvious no's. They put in some really sloppy don'ts which aren't much help unless people in London are really walking around like that. We need more realistic don'ts as opposed to the obvious.
Ew........2007-01-21
On multiple occasions they recommend wearing "a dress over slacks" as a "contemporary style," ironically using the outdated word "slacks." Have you ever seen anybody wear this? I mean, without people pointing and laughing?
The dress over slacks idea generally summarises the character of What Not To Wear's fashion advice: Gross. Frumpy. Sometimes just plain weird. Granted, the outfits they "correct" in this book are worse, but only because the original outfits are inappropriate for the occasion in question. Their advised outfits are not technically inappropriate, just ugly, and certainly not the only stylistic alternative to the original like they seem to claim.
Their choices might not seem so disgusting to me and make me feel so defiantly resentful of everything they portray as "fashionable" if they didn't claim to be some sort of godlike aesthetic authority, despite having no tangible style. But they DO seem to claim that they are taste embodied, which is clearly impossible. If such a thing exists it certainly won't be found in anything do with the What Not to Wear franchise.
Just on Okay Book.......2006-08-25
If you are going to buy a book by these girls I would recommend their other book "What You Can Wear Can Change Your Life". This book has good information if you are going to a summer wedding or a winter wedding, if you are going on a summer vacation vs. a winter vacation. What to wear at the PTA meeting. A fun book, but more information in the other book.
Book Description
In WHAT NOT TO WEAR we established the rules for dressing to suit your body shape. While you now know which skirt to avoid and which dress length to wear, many women say they still don't know what to wear to certain occasions - a job interview, a hot date, a wedding, a school function, going on from work, or just running around. This book is occasion led. It brings together those other elements that will give you total confidence to attend any event, work in any environment, go anywhere on holiday, and feel totally appropriately dressed, FOR YOU. Whether you want your look to be casual, trendy or smart, Susannah and Trinny will show you how to sally forth with style and confidence.
Customer Reviews:
Read the Introduction.......2005-10-19
If you read the intro to this book it is a great help to understanding and utilizing it best. Many of the "what not to wear outfits" are as Trinny and Susannah say the most obvious options and therefore BORING. What they are trying to teach the reader is how to be different but still appropriate, and also how to stand out. It is a wonderful source for anyone who wants to do that. It is fun to look at, has funny comments, and will help you get out of a rut, as will all of the what not to wear books. I highly reccomend all three. It is also an excellent eye opener for anyone who is in a bit of a time warp. Give them to all of your girlfriends as gifts.
Love the show, love the women, love the book.......2005-01-07
I think this book is fabulous, unlike the other reviewer. I agree with the canadian mum who felt that some of the selections were alittle "off" but the book has sections that allow the reader to determine her comfort level with fashion. So, there's a "classic", "trendy", "casual", and "dressy" for each of the book chapters such as Beach, Interviews, Mommy Going Back to the Office, etc. So, I think you should have a little "bizzare" for the "trendy" "cutting edge" mom. Its a great book and it introduces you to new things as well as ways to upgrade the old. Another winner from the fashionistas for BBC.
Don't waste your money.......2004-01-09
Although I love the What Not To Wear programmes, this book was a big disappointment. It is divided into occasions (work, weddings, school functions, etc.) and gives several examples of what to wear and what not to wear for each. The problem was that the suggested outfits were far too fussy and in somecases even bizarre. For example they suggested a long orange and brown woven dress with a large head piece made of fake butterflies as appropriate for a winter wedding. For a day-to-evening look they suggested wearing a plain white suit and then removing to blouse in the evening (showing cleavage almost to the waist). The everyday outfits emphasised large metal belts (I threw mine away in the 80's) and wearing dresses over full loose trousers. Personally I would feel like a fashion victim in the majority of their suggested outfits. The funniest suggestion was to make sure the back of your thong underwear is pretty (they show an embroidered butterfly) so people have something nice to look at when you bend over. Granted I'm a mum of 2 from Toronto, but I don't think I will be rushing out to follow their advice.
