"When it comes to pleasuring women and conversing in the language of love, cunnilingus should be every man's native tongue," writes clinical sexologist Ian Kerner, Ph.D. in She Comes First, a straightforward, intimate, and exuberant guide to cunnilingus. Kerner first explored "the oral caress" as a way of compensating for his "sexual inadequacies," and quickly learned that women not only welcomed but often preferred "the way of the tongue," reaching orgasm more consistently than through intercourse. Kerner educates readers about the clitoris, "the powerhouse of pleasure," with 18 parts and 8,000 nerve endings (twice as many as the penis) and describes female sexual response from "foreplay" through "coreplay" to "moreplay." A large part of the book is a graphic, detailed primer on "mouth music," including best positions, step-by-step techniques (illustrated), and tips for tongue and fingers. How long should this last? Until the woman has an orgasm or many, says Kerner, and "melts blissfully before your eyes." "The vast majority of women complain about guys who don't like to do it, don't know how to do it, or simply don't do it nearly enough," writes Kerner. This book will change that. Women: Buy it for your partner! --Joan Price
Book Description
As women everywhere will attest, when it comes to understanding female sexuality, most guys know more about what's under the hood of a car than under the hood of a clitoris. And while it seems that men have struggled valiantly since the dawn of time to find ways to reliably elicit the female orgasm, rare is the guy who has the modesty to ask: "What do I do?" Ironically, the answer has always been right there on the tip of his tongue.
Welcome to the world of She Comes First, where the mystery of female satisfaction is solved and the tongue is proven mightier than the sword. According to Ian Kerner, clinical sexologist and evangelist of the female orgasm, oral sex has long been deemed an optional aspect of foreplay, but, in fact, it's coreplay -- simply the best way for leading a woman through the entire process of sexual response.
Fun, informative, and easy to read, She Comes First is a virtual encyclopedia of female pleasure, detailing dozens of tried-and-true techniques for consistently satisfying a woman and illustrated step-by-step instructions to ensure success. These simple methods represent a new era in sexual intimacy, one in which the exchange of pleasure occurs on a level playing field and fulfillment is mutual.
She Comes First exuberantly offers a fresh new sexual philosophy that inspires every man to make a mantra of Rhett Butler's infamous line to Scarlett O'Hara, "You should be kissed, and often, and by someone who knows how."

Good guide to oral sex.......2007-10-19
The author does a great job of explaining the importance of placing a woman's pleasure before ones own. He also gives great advice on oral and manual stimulation. However, he completely dismisses the g-spot as well as female ejaculation, which is unfortunate in that it reduces his credibility as an expert on female sexuality. Lisa Douglass' book does a much better job of addressing that aspect of female sexuality.
how can a title like that not sell?.......2007-10-02
A bit over-rated, this work is extremely thorough in mastering her oral pleasuring. I wouldn't, however, say that it presents anything that hasn't been discussed in other literature. The book has simply been packaged and promoted well. Fun for experimentation, but not as witty as some press outlets have led us to believe.
Men, do your woman a favor and read this!.......2007-09-06
I didn't read the book, but my husband did. He read it in one sitting, actually. Based on the "results," I give it 5 stars and wish I could give it more! Wow! I plan on reading it myself tonight.
Coming in second isn't so bad........2007-09-03
I really enjoyed this guide to sex for men. The premise is to basically allow/help your partner to orgasm first, that way you come in second, though this isn't a bad thing, far from it. The author really gives good advice, in detail without being too elusive or standoffish. A highly recommended read, along with Sex Machine: A Man's Guide to What Really Pleases a Woman in Bed.
One of Three Must Have!.......2007-08-18
The next must have is - The Master's Guide to Cunnilingus: How to Perform Successful Oral Sex and Provide the Highest Degree of Pleasure Possible
Fantastic books which every man must read!

FREE SHIPPING Due to Amazons restrictions you must pay $3.49 in the check-out and we will refund those shipping fees to you! This is an audio download and youll receive an e-mail with download instructions within 2 business days. In the spirit of Natalie Angier?s Woman: An Intimate Geography, but with explicit techniques like those in Lou Paget?s How to Give Her Absolute Pleasure, Ian Kerner?s She Comes First exuberantly celebrates female sexual pleasure through the art of oral sex. The premise of the book is simple: when it comes to conversing in the language of love, cunnilingus should be everyone?s native tongue. Every popular source from Men?s Health to Sex and the City tells us that if you want a woman to have an orgasm, the best method is to go downtown. Yet when confronted with a woman?s most private anatomy, most of us have no idea how to hit the right spots. As with any language, in order to express yourself fluently when pleasuring a woman, you must be thoroughly acquainted with the rules of grammar and style. And like that indispensable classic on English usage, The Elements of Style, author and certified sex therapist Ian Kerner Ph.D, condenses a wealth of experience and expertise into a simple, essential rulebook, offering the reader nothing less than the definitive guide to the grammar of oral sex.

Book Description
In 1937, Mexican workers were among the strikers and supporters beaten, arrested, and murdered by Chicago policemen in the now infamous Republic Steel Mill Strike. Using this event as a springboard, Zaragosa Vargas embarks on the first full-scale history of the Mexican-American labor movement in twentieth-century America. Absorbing and meticulously researched, Labor Rights Are Civil Rightspaints a multifaceted portrait of the complexities and contours of the Mexican American struggle for equality from the 1930s to the postwar era.
Drawing on extensive archival research, Vargas focuses on the large Mexican American communities in Texas, Colorado, and California. As he explains, the Great Depression heightened the struggles of Spanish speaking blue-collar workers, and employers began to define citizenship to exclude Mexicans from political rights and erect barriers to resistance. Mexican Americans faced hostility and repatriation.
The mounting strife resulted in strikes by Mexican fruit and vegetable farmers. This collective action, combined with involvement in the Communist party, led Mexican workers to unionize. Vargas carefully illustrates how union mobilization in agriculture, tobacco, garment, and other industries became an important vehicle for achieving Mexican American labor and civil rights.
He details how interracial unionism proved successful in cross-border alliances, in fighting discriminatory hiring practices, in building local unions, in mobilizing against fascism and in fighting brutal racism. No longer willing to accept their inferior status, a rising Mexican American grassroots movement would utilize direct action to achieve equality.

Indispensable Literary and Cinematic Bond Compendium .......2007-01-31
I found Author Raymond Benson's "James Bond Bedside Companion" to be an indispensable work on James Bond along with works of authors such as John Griswold, Kingsley Amis, Philip Lisa and others. Benson's book focuses on both the literary and cinematic James Bond and goes even further examining the entire James Bond phenomenon. Overall this is a very comprehensive book told concisely in expert fashion. It is an essential book for any James Bond enthusiast. Putting it bluntly, Benson knows his stuff.
THE essential reference work on James Bond. Period........2002-09-30
If you're a fan of the movies or books but haven't ever read anything about them, this is the place to start. If you have read lots of other stuff, but not this, shame on you. You'll still learn a lot from The James Bond Bedside Companion, and you'll find that it is THE essential guide to all things Bond, books and films, all in one place. I have just about everything ever published on Bond in English (and that's a lot of books), and this is the one that I'll pull off the shelf first if I want to look things up. Every Bond fan should own it.
Excellent analysis of the James Bond phenomenon........2002-03-11
Raymond Benson's James Bond Bedside Companion provides an excellent analysis of the entire James Bond series, including the films and the novels. This edition was originally released in 1988, and it has not been updated to the present. As a result, some of the information is quite dated. Of most notable development is the fact that Raymond Benson himself has since taken over as the author of the James Bond literary series.
Nonetheless, this is overall, an informative work. Benson provides a chapter on Ian Fleming's background. Of particular note is a chapter in which Benson pieces together the biography of the James Bond character. This is reminiscent of John Pearson's Unauthorized Biography of James Bond. Benson provides an excellent analysis of the James Bond novels. He identifies trends in Ian Fleming's writing nad points to specific examples of what he calls the "Fleming Effect." For hard core fans of the novels this section is excellent. Benson includes analysis of the works of Ian FLeming, Kingsley Amis, and John Gardner. Curiously, many of the apparent criticisms that Benson had of Gardner's work, he is guilty of committing in his own novels. The film analysis is also excellent. Benson provides detailed analysis of every film through the Living Daylights.
It should be noted that this book will probably not be of much appeal to the casual James Bond fan. Benson tries to provide an in depth analysis rather than focusing on the superficial. Of distraction to the hard core fan, are occasional factual errors that appear to be the result of sloppy editing. Additionally, the quality of the text and photos is generally poor. The formatting of the text is somewhat erratic with occasional omissions of glaringly obvious punctuation. The photos are all black & white. The photos are generally blurred. This appear to be the result of poor printing.
Overall, the quality of the author's analysis is generally educational and informative. However, the production of the actual book borders on shoddy. An excellent reference work for the hardcore fan, but if you're looking for color photos of Bond girls and gadgets, then you should look elsewhere.
All you want to know on BOND!.......2002-02-24
If you want only one book for your collection on the bond series this is it!! A masterpiece volume with great research and colorful themes by MR. Benson. My children are now reading this book and watch a Bond movie each month and refer to this book for details/information. Its great that this out of print book is available again for all to enjoy!! BOND JAMES BOND
a book for the James Bond fan, written by a James Bond fan.......1999-07-05
to have a great understanding of Mr. Bond one has only to read this book that Benson seemes to have had as much fun writing as you will reading it. includes bio on Mr. Flemming and very honest 007 movie history.

THE expert's guide to the world of 007!.......2000-06-12
THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION is an apt title because for any true James Bond fans this indispensible guide to the world of 007 will not travel far beyond your night stand. It's a compusivlely fun read. What author Benson had done was take the best of sources like Kingsley Amis' JAMES BOND DOSSIER (another out-of-print classic), John Pearson's JAMES BOND-THE AUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF 007, and John Brosnan's JAMES BOND IN THE CINEMA, and re-assembled them here with his own personal stamp. It's all here: a consise history of the novels, films, and world wide James Bond phenomenom , an analysis of the James Bond literary character, complete reviews of both Ian Fleming's and John Garner's novels and, of course, the movies. The book lacks the many photos from the Bond films but thats the key to its appeal- It's a pure literary compedium for the James Bond fan new and old alike, not a flashy celebration. With Benson's new found fame as an acclaimed James Bond novelist, I hope this book gets back in print and updated with speed of an Astin Martin.
Now pay attention 007 !.......2000-06-05
This is by far the most comcomprehensive look at Ian Fleming 's spy with a license to kill. It contains much background into the Fleming books ,and honest reviews of the movies.A bible for any die hard Bond fans. Although outdated ,( the last movie reviewed is Moonraker) it is still a tour de force. I received my copy as a Christmas gift in the Mid 80's , and literally wore it out . A hard book to find , but the treasure is worth the hunt.Mr. Gardner left no stone unturned in researching this book.
Customer Reviews:
Fun read, a little reckless with the facts, however.......2007-04-20
Marsh is a fine writer, this book will start and continue arguments. It's a lot of fun. Not sure how "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" tops the list, it's not even Motown's best, and frankly Gladys Knight did a better version. But that's Marsh's opinion.
The Beatles don't come in until No. 29 -- a clear oversight, in my opinion.
The worst part is the lack of attention to detail. Marsh notes that Spinners' lead singer Phillipe Wynne nails the lyrics in "I'll Be Around" and "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love." Uh, no, that would be Bobbie Smith leading both of those songs.
Marsh also assumes Eddie Levert lead sings all O'Jays songs, when anyone with a decently tuned ear can tell on about 80 percent of their songs, they rotate leads with Levert and Walter Williams. Marsh quotes a line in "Backstabbers" that Levert sings well, when in reality it is Walter Williams. I'm wondering how many other errors I didn't find.
That said, this book is still worth getting. No one will every agree with anyone's song rankings, but for the most part Marsh does an excellent job. He should've paid more attention to the facts, however.
Dave Marsh's observations are music to my ears........2006-06-30
Having worn out the 1st & 2nd editions of The Heart of Rock & Soul: The 1001 Greatest Singles Ever Made by Dave Marsh, I reordered the 2nd edition, as about 15 pages were missing from the copy I owned. From big sellers ("I Heard It Through The Grapevine", Marvin Gaye) to obscure (apparently to Dave Marsh) songs ("Please Say You Want Me", The Schoolboys) each review/confession/tribute is lovingly and accurately discribed, with from-the-gut comments ("...Prepare to meet the dawn.": "Lead Me On", Bobby Bland). Whenever I hear one of these songs for the first time, I eagerly see what Dave has to say about it. Or, if it's one of my favorites that I haven't heard for awhile, I do the same.
I have spent many years enjoying and appreciating this great book.
Kissing Marsh's Ring.......2005-07-09
Flipping through this book can be kind of fun in very, very small doses. You get to read about some well known classic songs, some lesser known ones, and get reminded of some you might not have though of in years and be introduced to some you may have never heard. But boy, what an ego Marsh has, and what arrogance! I mean think about it. Do you really think that anybody would buy and read a book by you about YOUR favorite songs?
concerning the lack of 60's folk music.......2005-02-23
Concerning folk music of the early to late sixties Mr. Marsh states: ......in musical style and class orientation it was very much a reaction against the dominance of rock and roll and r & b in the fifties. He also states: "Folk pop of the sort that hit the charts tailored itself to appeal primarily to white middle class collegiates, particularly ones who found the music of contemporary blacks and working-class whites too vulgar." It's amazing to me how people who just don't like folk music in the first place, makes such statements.
For me though, there was an earthiness, a sincerity to the folk music of that time. Mr. Marsh may not have liked the music but he shouldn't blame it on some sort of conspiracy against R&B and Rock and Roll.
The Heart of Rock and Soul.......2003-12-21
Before this book was published I didn't know much about doowop or Fortune Records.
This book really opened my ears to "black music". For which I am really thankful. Together with a friend I collected all songs and made a nice tape-collection out of it. Most of all the search for these songs brought a lot of great adventures.
An online version of this book can be found at http://www.lexjansen.com/marsh.
Enjoy!

Book Description
Electronic music over the last few years has conquered the Western world with the force of a thunderstorm. It has created a new movement that expresses itself in Love Parades in Berlin and Zurich and in club scenes that fans of the "old" rock and pop music scene never even dreamt of. Zurich, Switzerland has become a European center for electronic music, and one of its most popular nightspots, founded in 1997, is Rohstofflager ("warehouse for raw material"). The club has invited almost every DJ of importance to spin there: world-famous Jeff Mills and Curtis "Cajmere" Jones from Chicago, Kevin Saunderson , Derrik May, Juan Atkins and Robert Hood from Detroit, Laurent Garnier from Paris, Claude Young from Glasgow, Richie Hawtin from Windsor, Canada, Luke Slater, Dave Clarke, Kevin "Hype" Ford, Ray "Grooverider" Bingham, "Goldie" and Roni Size from the United Kingdom, Cisco "The Advent" Ferreira from Lisbon, Helmut "Hell" Geier and Maximilian "Westbam" Lenz from Germany, Cari Lekebusch and Adam Beyer from Stockholm, and more. The stars of the international electronic music scene are represented in this book, not only through panoramic color portraits, but also in statements explaining why they do what they do, what happens with them while entertaining the feverish Saturday night dancers of today, and what happens when they make the people fly to their rhythms. This is a book for club-goers who want to know what their DJ's really feel and think when they are in action. And, last but not least: readers become listeners with the two music CDs included in this must-have publication, which brings the energy of the dance floor to your book shelf.

Sound and vision.......2003-04-16
fantastic book with great portraits of some of the most important people in electronic dance (mainly techno) today. Each artist describes in their own words what is going through their mind on the topic of techno/dance music - where they came from - how they work - etc. These are true techno artists. You won't find any Paul Oakenfolds or John Digweeds in this book which is such a relief. The bulk of the book is Detroit (Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, Derrick May, Saunderson, Larkin) Northern European (Heiko Laux, DJ Hell, Mss Djax) artists but there are a few d&b/junglists like Ed Rush and LTJ Bukem towards the back. The two CDs included are an excellent way for those unfamiliar with some of the profiles to place face, name, and sound together. Highly recommended for anyone interested in electronic dance music.
A cutting-edge showcase of modern popular culture.......2003-04-14
Compiled, arranged, and edited by Walter Huegli (in collaboration with Martin Jaeggi), Raw Music Material: Electronic Music DJs Today is an impressively presented archive featuring color photographs, personal interviews, enhanced with exciting music on two accompanying audio CDS. Presenting a cohesive and upbeat portrait of electronic music DJs in the modern age, Raw Music Material is enthusiastically recommended as a cutting-edge showcase of modern popular culture and rhythm.

Book Description
"If it bleeds, it leads." The phrase captures television news directors' famed preference for opening newscasts with the most violent stories they can find. And what is true for news is often true for entertainment programming, where violence is used as a product to attract both viewers and sponsors. In this book, James Hamilton presents the first major theoretical and empirical examination of the market for television violence.
Hamilton approaches television violence in the same way that other economists approach the problem of pollution: that is, as an example of market failure. He argues that television violence, like pollution, generates negative externalities, defined as costs borne by others than those involved in the production activity. Broadcasters seeking to attract viewers may not fully bear the costs to society of their violent programming, if those costs include such factors as increased levels of aggression and crime in society. Hamilton goes on to say that the comparison to pollution remains relevant when considering how to deal with the problem. Approaches devised to control violent programming, such as restricting it to certain times and rating programs according to the violence they contain, have parallels in zoning and education policies designed to protect the environment.
Hamilton examines in detail the microstructure of incentives that operate at every level of television broadcasting, from programming and advertising to viewer behavior, so that remedies can be devised to reduce violent programming without restricting broadcasters' right to compete.
Customer Reviews:
WOW! Hamilton makes a convincing argument.......2002-04-19
Hamilton is one of the greatest minds concerning the subject of media politics that the nation has seen in recent years. His book Channeling Violence is a think piece that concerns violence in the media by comparing the epidemic to that of pollution. From the first words I was blown away with the ideas and vernacular that Hamilton uses, he definately has mastered the craft of writing.

Book Description
ÂYouÂ've created your fellow humanity to appear different from you so that you could learn to love them; so that you could struggle to bind yourself back to them in an intimate, whole, Godly union. You have created differences between one person and another for only one reason: to erase differences in your heart. It is the mind that distinguishes; it is the heart that extinguishes.Â
The Way of Freedom is a rewarding spiritual examination of the causes of the social tensions that would divide us. Eon uncovers the process by which judgment begins, and demonstrates how forgiveness can be applied to reduce the growing fears about violence in our world.
Eon is a spiritual guide who has lived on Earth many times: ÂI am called Eon. I see you from a state of happiness and bliss. Although you have difficult times in this life, I see everything you do as beautiful, and I am not the only one who views you in this manner. Be happy on your path, and know that you are loved and safe. Dedicate yourself to your own self-improvement, for this is the way to make the greatest progress.Â

Book Description
In his debut novel "YEVAL", C.W. Schultz explores the differences between the portrayal and reality of violence. Randy Mulray is on the threshold of madness, envisioning incommunicable murders in a room (called the "Dark Room") he is mentally forced into by a monster named Yeval. A horror story like never before, "YEVAL" flirts with the notion that violence in entertainment is too shallow and appealing for audiences to really grip the iniquity and futility.

this book is cool.......2007-07-22
a friend told me that id love this book, so i got a copy and read it. she was right. this book is great. usually it takes a while for me to get into a book, but i got right into this book and finished reading it in 2 days. it tricks you too. it went in a different direction than i assumed and the twists are unpredictable, but it is interesting and satisfying until the end. i dunno much about what the reviewer before me said about its take on violence in entertainment, i guess i see what hes talking about, all i no is that the book kept me interested the whole way. this is one of these books that has many layers, so i look forward to rereading it and finding stuff hidden that i didnt notice before. but if you dont like rereading stuff thats ok, youll still enjoy this book a bunch if you wanna read it just once. aside from a few grammar and punctuation errors i noticed (who am i to talk!), this book is flawless. highly recommended. enjoy!
ps. this book isnt for the squeamish.
Now THIS is what I call HORROR!.......2007-07-20
Sick, twisted, haunting, startling and funny! Unlike any serial-killer story I have ever read before. A true murder-mystery which will keep you guessing who the killer is until its unforgettable climax. I wish there were more stories like this.
It's nice to finally read something that portrays murder the way it really is... ugly and merciless. Violence in movies, music, news and video-games are appealing in order for it to sell and keep us interested. Our entertainment is just a business in which some people, like the novel's main character, take too literally and relate to their own life. This book uses its other elements (such as character development, details, references to pop-culture, and dark-humor) to appeal to us, and at the same time subconsciously turn us off from the violence we originally craved.
This is a story about Randy Mulray, a man in his late twenties who struggles to find acceptance from someone aside from his mentally retarded brother. Randy is mentally forced by an imaginary creature, named Yeval, into viewing gruesome murders carried out by a disguised serial killer known as the Seattle Slayer. Unable to get help from the police, Randy decides to investigate the killing spree on his own. In turn, he finds answers about himself that he's been searching for for over twenty years.
Like so many people who live in our society, entertainment is an outlet for our fears and struggles of reality. "YEVAL" addresses this issue with its main character, whose grip on reality decays as his troubles build which lead him to seek movies and music as an outlet for those problems. We get an extreme, but interesting and possible, example of how violence in our entertainment influences our way of thinking. The mind can be very gullible.
The novel is an overall murder-mystery told in a first-person narrative of an unstable drug-dealer. A lot of things are exaggerated, questionable, and ambiguous, making Randy Mulray another example of literature's classic "unreliable narrator". There are several sub-plots in this story, as well as several moral themes. This novel is an interesting look at the insecurities and ungratefulness of our culture.

Some Great Stuff-However not what I hoped for.......2005-08-21
I learned some good stuff and the bonus chapters are good resources. However the teaching style is not a step by step proceedure. The author explains without demonstation then after 4 chapters of explaining, you do a hands on tutorial in which you do what you were supposed to learn. If you know Flash and are familiar with its processes this may be your book, if you want to see the steps in action, forget it. Over and over the author instructs you to create a file without letting you know what to create. Terms like "open a flash document and create an animation" appear far to often. The book is great for a reference but I thought there was to much explanation without demonstation. One further note, there were missing files on my CD, in trying to get the files downloaded i ran into a lot of hassle. Proof of purchase, broken links, and redirection to downloads that were not there. I believe a great teaching book on something like flash requires a support site that is equally great. I learned some neat things, and I use the book for reference, but for those first learning flash, buy the Macromedia Design Profesional series Flash.
Great Book, Great CD-ROM.......2005-02-22
I agree with many of the reviews already posted here. I found the CD-ROM to be especially thorough, with Bonus Chapters, Hands on examples, and lots of software demo and eval copies. In a working situation I had a question about curve editing, and I looked in the index of this book and found my answer explained step by step. A rival book did not have a "curve editing" entry in their index, and when I tracked down their explanation, it was not as clearly described or illustrated. Hats off to the Savvy guys, Watrall and Herber.
well done Watrall & Herber!.......2004-11-03
This is one of the best Flash study books I have ever used and I have bought many. I have to echo all the praise previous reviewers have written. I have tried to grasp ActionScript by diligently studying several tedious Flash books and never quite "got it" until I bought this one. This book is very well written and it intelligently guides you through Flash. I agree that it is written so that you can jump from topic to topic, but if you work though the chapters in a linear way, the book helps you build skills & knowledge of Flash from start to finish. Good for beginners or more experienced Flash users. The hands-on lessons after each chapter help you apply what you have learned and the inspiration design modules make it FUN! I LOVE this book and recommend it to anyone!
An excellent kick-start reference.......2004-10-06
Getting started with Flash MX 2004? Get this book!
As a new Flash user but an experienced programmer / Web developer, I had been looking for a good reference to get up and running quickly with Flash MX 2004 Pro. I started with one book that had tedious step-by-step examples and little background into why things are done a certain way. I then bought this book and on almost every page I found myself saying "Oh, THAT'S why!". I gave the other book away.
This book is very well written. It gets to the point quickly and doesn't linger too long on any one subject. The writing style is clear, easy to follow. and even fun to read. The exmaples are practical in that the authors don't assume that you need to see every mouse click and keypress listed as a "step". Each chapter ends with an online site that exemplifies the subject of that chapter - good for inspiration.
This is not an expert book and only covers ActionScript in passing (fine for most beginners). The CD-ROM includes bonus chapters (useful) and "essential" ActionScript examples and references. Since it is not a complete ActionScript reference it's unlikely to make my collection of essential CD-ROMs, however.
If you are getting started with Flash MX 2004 / Pro I highly recommend buying this book first.

COMPLEX AND FULFILLING
This is the second book I've read by Ethan Watrall, and I have to say I continue to be impressed. Flash MX 2004 (the most unfortunate product name, ever) is a complex, mature program. As the authors state, Flash MX 2004 can be "used to create amazingly complex, interactive products, dynamic and data driven websites and online applications, cartoon serials, online (and offline) games, music videos, music players, instant messengers...the list goes on and on." This book, Flash MX 2004 Savvy, then, takes the reader through the basics of using Flash MX and MX Professional, the new interface, visual techniques for drawing and animation, symbols and text, and runs right on through to more advanced topics, like ActionScript, Audio, Video, and integration with other programs.
MAC-CENTRIC
Now, Ethan Watrall isn't the only author. His co-author, Norbert Herber, is the "mac guy" for the book. Both authors are faculty members at Indiana University. Their writing style is both easy to understand and thorough. As a Mac user, I appreciated the cross platform approach of the text, with key-commands spelled out for both Windows and Macintosh users, along with a variety of Mac screen shots throughout the book.
GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY
Each section of the book (2 - 3 Chapters) ends with a "Hands On" section, where the authors walk the reader through a project that includes the techniques discussed within the content portion of the chapters. (...) Based on scenes and reused graphic symbols, it looks fairly accomplished, I think. The book is full of these kinds of projects, which really helped me feel like I was learning something. Many times, books that are references on a given software application don't impart this same feeling of "getting somewhere."
NOVICE LEVEL
This book is a beginner to novice level guide to Flash MX 2004. It doesn't cover form-based applications, publishing in multiple languages, data binding and web services, nor ActionScript 2.0. As you can see, these are very advanced topics. So, basically,. this book covers anything you really need to know about starting out and actually using Flash. The authors don't spend a lot of time on how to open and save files, or how to manage your computer directory structure. The book progresses fairly swiftly through the first 3 chapters on interface and usage of the basic drawing tools, a topic that I feel gets too much space in many "beginner" books.
MORE THAN JUST A BOOK
An added value to the book is, of course, the CD full of files for use in the Hands On sections, as well as demos of Flash MX 2004 and other Macromedia products. In addition, it has several Bonus chapters, to take your learning further. What surprised me, however, was that the authors ALSO include a web site to go to that enhances learning as well. (...). Finally, the authors provide their personal email addresses, which I find refreshing.
BUY THIS BOOK
I look forward to finishing this book. It's not one I'm going to leave on the shelf for reference; rather, I plan on delving into each content and Hands On section in my own learning of this powerful multimedia tool. I'd recommend this book for anyone starting out their journey towards Flash mastery. It's well written, easy to understand, yet thorough and full of information. It has evenly distributed Macintosh savvy advice, as well as screenshots that look familiar to those that use computers "for the rest of us." Buy this book now!
