This book is simply a collection of off-beat facts about the Civil War. It is not Great Literature, nor is it meant to be. For any History Buff or Odd-Fact Enthusiast, this is a fun read.

There are many books written about the Civil War that discuss the battles and military tactics. These topics are good for someone studying military strategies. This book is for the people who like the interesting side facts of a situation, or the little things that didn't necessarily have any thing to do with the outcome, but are interesting to know. Some are humorous, some are sad, but at the title suggests, they are strange and fascinating. Burk Davis brings these to us in an interesting way. This low cost book is very useful to me in my study of the Civil War.

My hubby LOVED this book in his stocking this Christmas. It is very entertaining! My only issue with it was the quality of the item - the paper was not cut well and looed ragged. Having said that - it was really reasonable...so I may be expecting too much!

Dawley packs this book with pertinent facts. This is a real page turner. There is not alot of published information about this particular area of the Industrial Revolution. So, the extensive research presented is greatly appreciated.

Very good stuff.Written in very language easy to connect.I had almost decided to give up showing dogs,and got this book.In the next month I had three of my terriers were on board.Yet I am sure I would not have been hurt as much as before the book even if they had not won.

An essential reader for anything thinking about showing or breeding dogs.......2006-04-03

Recently, a friend mentioned he was thinking about breeding puppies. Luckily, I was already reading this book. After mentioning the schedules, money, paperwork, heartbreak, and blood, sweat, and tears that goes into dog breeding, he said "never mind"

Not only is Dog Eat Dog a brilliant expose on dog breeding, it focuses on the world of show dogs, a complicated place in which the slightest bump on a dogs shoulder can make the difference between winning and loosing, and where wirehair dogs have to be groomed by having individual hairs pulled out.

Though many breeds and breeders are mentioned, the main focus is on Mimi Einstein and her All Star Kennels, which breeds and shows Bull Mastiffs, massive, loving guard dogs. Many of the stories are touching, some will make you cheer outloud and one made my eyes water.

It's fast moving, well paced, and though a real tale it has a happy ending.

If you're thinking about getting a pure bred dog, showing a dog, or breeding for profit, please read this book first!

'Dog Eat Dog' is the 'Orchid Thief' of the dog show world, but the obsession in this case is with Bullmastiffs, not orchids. Jane and Michael Stern have written an interesting, sweet, and sometimes sad book about the 'dog eat dog' competition in the American dog show ring. The sadness comes in when the authors describe the problems that we humans have wrought upon our best friends, by breeding for a particular and possibly arbitrary trait (size or hairlessness) and ignoring the consequences (hip dysplasia, deafness, birthing problems).

The authors suffered from the purebred dog syndrome themselves: "Some couples dream of a house, others of a baby; we could think of nothing more enriching to our tender relationship than the companionship of a drooling, flatulent Bulldog."

Richard, the Bulldog was an utter failure in the showring but if he was the genesis of "Dog Eat Dog", then he was a very successful Bulldog, indeed. Please read this book. It is a droll, ingratiating, doggy slice of Americana.

In The Mozart Effect for Children, Campbell explains early on why Mozart's music is thought to have such amazing powers, and while he cites no statistics or studies, his lyrical explanations of Mozart's simplicity and elegance will have many reader's heads nodding in agreement--it's difficult to disagree with "his music is at once deeply mysterious and accessible, and above all, without guile". Still, most of what passes for science in this book is anecdotal and will not make a satisfying read for those looking for original research.

Each chapter is devoted to a particular age, from prenatal to mid-elementary school, and parents and educators can find excellent musical menus, practical suggestions, and entertaining games to play at the end of every chapter. The menus include suggestions for appropriate times to play the various pieces, as well as a brief description of the type of music, helpful in case you're not immediately familiar with "Adagio from the Divertimento" or "Concertante from the Serenade No. 9". Games range from simple variations on pat-a-cake to rhythmic chanting designed to improve memory skills, and parents will enjoy playing at least as much as their children will. Perhaps you child's IQ will magically improve from listening to Mozart, perhaps it won't. Nurturing through Music.......2006-07-05

This book introduces a wonderful way to spend more time nurturing your child through musical activities. I was a little skeptical about the effects it would have, but found that even simple ryhmes can calm my children down. It is not a "fast food" approach. It is about using music and singing to motivate and comfort your child. We sing and ryhme all day- from diaper changes to car trips.

As an educator I find the ideas in this book to be a great way for every parent to prepare their child for school. It may not make your child more "intelligent", but I believe the author is correct in saying that your child with be a better learner.

No matter how many experiments are made that disproof the Mozart Effect there will always be parents who want a fast easy way of controlling or making their kids more "intelligent". Someday someone is going to market a sugar pill to do that, and make millions.

This book will make me a smarter parent. I am amazed at how this book blends the practical, the scientific and the artistic into common sense. I am not a fan of Classical music, but this book has helped me understand more about the healthy qualities of music.

This book is outstanding. As a parent and nearly a grand parent, as well as a music therapist, I welcome this clear and creative book. There is no doubt you can use the Mozart Effect in your home the way Campbell defines it. It is more than just a scientific study, it is about knowing how to nuture a child and a family with music . Campbell is neither elitest nor arrogant. He inspires and informs. All types of music are included and the book takes a step by step, age by age, approach to brain and body development. He shows us that The Mozart Effect goes back to research in France over forty years ago and continues in centers throughout the world today to help children with ADD, speech problems and dyslexia.

Prover is an exceptional author whose merits reach beyond words. In her analysis of Hollywood's piccadillos, she reveals many of the constructions of race and desire latent in the entertainment industry. Because this industry is fueled by consumers, the styles of entertainment valued and produced reveal much of society's attitudes towards norms and the value of culture in influencing them. Prover makes identity a clear issue as these connections are tied masterfully together in a wonderfully readable book.

Must have book for the SAS user.......2007-09-15

In the first place, I am a pathologist writing a review on a book on statistics. That, by itself, will raise a few eyebrows. Few pathologists, in my opinion, understand statistical jargon. Yet, I would recommend this $40 book to even a novice in pathology who wants to do logistic regression modeling. While this books does explain logistic regression like most other books, what sets this book apart, are the real-world examples and the simple SAS code included with each example?
I have specifically been able understand GEE modeling only in this book, as compared to the numerous other books, where I find the statistical jargon intimidating; so much so that, I have ended up getting confused even after a couple of hours worth of intense reading. If you are devoted SAS user, you have probably read this book already. But if you are a novice pathologist and want to start learning a new program, I would advise Stata rather than SAS. SAS, in my opinion is code heavy. Yet, this book will be very useful to understand the varied uses of logistic regression (from exact to GEE analyses, especially from a pathologist's perspective). All discussions are to the point without too much jargon. For $40 this book is great value. I am just waiting to see if a newer version comes up in the near future.

Allison's logistic regression book.......2006-11-10

Paul Allison's book on logistic regression is a wonderful introduction to logistic regression. He manages to be rigorous, and yet present the material in an easy-to-understand manner. This would be a useful book even for non-SAS users who want to use logistic regression. As a SAS user, I find it indispensable.

The only drawback is that it has not been updated to cover the capabilities of newer versions of SAS.

It is always nice to have an example. This is what this book gives you. It also gives you options. SAS commands are written clearly. It still can not be your only logistic regression book. You will need other books to have a better understanding of logistic regression.

If you need to understand logistic regression analysis and you must do it in SAS, then you must have this book.

Gives clear, concise explanation of logistic regression, how to accomplish it in SAS, and explains the details of the SAS results.

I had used this author's SAS book on survival analysis before, so I was expecting another virtuoso performance when this book came out. And I was not disappointed. The book is incredibly useful, provides clear examples, makes you feel like you really understand the statistics, provides voluminous SAS code to illustrate how to implement analyses, and even teaches you a few tricks about how to handle unusual data problems along the way. Highly recommended, even if you don't use SAS!
