Customer Reviews:
Great as reference or tutorial.......2007-10-04
I don't buy many woodworking books because most, especially the ones sold by home centers, aren't very good. They lack detail, they're incomplete, and I often get the feeling that they're just cranked out without much thought. But this one caught my eye in a local bookstore and I'm glad I bought it.
First of all, the book can be used either as a reference or as a complete primer on woodworking. There's lots of information there, but not so much that you get bogged down. At first I just used it to brush up on specific topics, and then I went back to the first page and started reading it straight through. It's well-written; words are used well and not wasted. Photography is superb. Despite the reference to generic "Furniture" in the title, the book is heavily oriented toward cabinets, which it covers in great detail, even to the point of describing how to construct multi-light glass doors.
The first few pages are a little off-putting as the author describes what he considers an appropriate collection of tools and a space to put them in; unfortunately, many woodworking books assume that the reader has acres of space in which to set up a shop. As you read on, though, the text is more friendly toward the hobbyist.
In short, this is a great woodworking reference or tutorial. Don't be put off by the beginning of the book; it gets better. And the Amazon price for this book is much lower than the $40 I paid in the bookstore.
disappointed.......2007-09-24
I found this book very disappointing. The pictures were very pretty but that is pretty much it. The illustrations were confusing and of little use. It gives too much of an overview and no real specifics. I found woodworking for dummies to be a much better book for the beginning woodworker.
The benchmark book on furniture making.......2007-08-05
It is well known that woodworkers have different styles. I think Andy Ray's style will work for majority people trying to learn woodworking. His writing is clear, and he also presents thoughts in logical way. Thus, the book precisely explain why he does this way but not another.
Great Resource for Beginners.......2007-07-05
I purchased this book because I had the interest to learn more about furniture design and building technique. It's very well written, easy to understand and the quality photos help visualize the instructions of the author. It's a great resource to beginners because of the structure of the book. It starts with basic tools and their use, workshop design, and then moves on to basic wood explanations and building techniques. It also gives you ideas on additional readings if you'd like to research a topic in more detail. I would recommend this book to anyone that is interested woodworking by making it a part of your home library.
Great literature for a novice or tradesman.......2007-05-25
This book has plenty to offer anyone. A lot of it was review for me, but it is always good to make sure you don't forget the basics as you move forward in carpentry - it's like trying to attempt calculus without algebra.
I have read this from cover to cover and feel I could read it again to pick up on the little things I missed. It is indeed as it's titled, the "complete" guide. I will say that some basic knowledge will be instrumental for fully grasping and understanding this book, but for the most part, explinations are clear, concise, and simple. There are a few charts in this book that make it very handy and also some very good pointers - some of it is very helpful, but doesnt' seem to be able to adhere to any of my brain cells, so this is one book I like to have close to my shop.
Overall, I'm pleased with this book, and can't wait to read Taunton Press' Complete Illustrated Guide to Joinery, which is referred to in this book from time to time.

Complete Illustrated Guide to Woodworking.......2007-04-19
Having just taken delivery of this boxed set I can see that my workshop projects will have to wait a while so enjoyable I am finding these books to read!
I was initially looking to purchase only the Andy Rae book to help in some cabinet construction work but having not bought any up-to-date woodworking books for a while I decided to buy the set. Having now briefly gone through all three books I am very pleased with my decision to purchase all.
The Rae book, my book of choice, is exceptionally good with clear easy-to-understand explanations of all the subject matter accompanied by excellent line drawing illustrations back with good colour photos as required. The content layout is also very well organised and importantly the reader doesn't get bogged down in heavy text passages on techniques and the like. Importantly even just a quick skim through the various sections of the book leaves the reader with grasp of the essence of the content.
This is a book which I see myself constantly dipping into and, as the writer states in his introduction, will be kept very close to my workshop!
The Rogowski book on joinery is presented in a similar fashion and recieves another thumbs up although I have to confess that as an amateur carpenter I doubt the need to tackle some of the more ambitious work presented. Nevertheless, I am already rethinking of changing some of the techniques I presently use in favour of those presented by Mr Rogowski.
The Bird book on shaping wood looks like becoming another very useful reference and ideas book that I shall dip into as new and more ambitious projects come along.
All in all I heartily recommend this boxed set to anyone who dabbles in and enjoys woodworking, and wants to learn more from the experts in a easily understandable and practical manner.
Definitely 5 stars to Taunton Press for compiling ths set.
Taunton Series is tops.......2007-03-03
I have almost the complete Taunton series of woodworking books and they are a joy to peruse. Filled with good ideas, tips, tools and what-all.
Perfectly concise.......2006-03-16
This collection of books, which is priced substantially lower than bookstores by the way, is really a great wealth of knowledge about woodworking in general. I enjoy woodworking, specifically I'm a carpenter so my days have some variety, but there's only so much you can figure out on your own. You'll learn something just flipping through these books. This collection really gives you a direction to go with your craft and they really help you improve.

Book Description
Of the wave of labor strikes that swept through the South in 1929, the one at the Loray Mill in Gastonia, North Carolina, is perhaps the best remembered. In Gastonia 1929 John Salmond provides the first detailed account of the complex events surrounding the strike at the largest textile mill in the Southeast. His compelling narrative unravels the confusing story of the shooting of the town's police chief, the trials of the alleged killers, the unsolved murder of striker Ella May Wiggins, and the strike leaders' conviction and subsequent flight to the Soviet Union. Describing the intensifying climate of violence in the region, Salmond presents the strike within the context of the southern vigilante tradition and as an important chapter in American economic and labor history in the years after World War I. He draws particular attention to the crucial role played by women as both supporters and leaders of the strike, and he highlights the importance of race and class issues in the unfolding of events.
Customer Reviews:
A Well researched history of the Loray Mill Strike.......2007-09-06
Salmond's work is a much needed book on a crucial strike in southern industrial history. The book is excellently researched, drawing on interviews with former participants of the strike and an abundant source of contemporary newspapers. The book is in narrative form; however, Salmond provides important analyses in explaining the causes of the strike, what distinguished the Loray Mill Strike, and the author does a good job of placing the strike in its historical context. This is a must read for students of American industrial and labor history, and I would recommend "Gastonia: 1929" to anyone interested in Southern history.
A bizarre episode in southern history explained........1997-06-03
On the eve of the Great Depression, textile workers in Gastonia, North Carolina, walked out of the town's largest plant to protest management's efforts to speed up the production line. The Communist-led National Textile Workers Union saw the walkout as an opportunity to unionize southern industry and sent veterans of the Passaic textile strike to assume leadership. Two years after the execution of Sacco and Vanzetti, Gastonia quickly became an international cause celebre. Despite daily coverage in the New York Times and other major newspapers at the time and the later publication of six novels on the strike, the walkout has long since been forgotten.
John Salmond's account brings to life the bizarre collision between the Communist Party and Bible Belt populism, which resulted in the murders under mysterious circumstances of Gastonia's police chief and a striker who was a talented country singer, kidnappings, ghost sightings in the Mecklenburg County Courthouse, and the eventual escape of the strike's leaders to the Soviet Union.
For me, a particularly telling instance of cultural incomprehension was the decision of a sidewalk Pentecostal preacher to quit the strike because his participation conflicted with the "principles" of the Ku Klux Klan. A few weeks later, the national leadership of the NTWU decided to spotlight the union's dedication to racial integration in its strike pamphlets, eroding local support. (This was 1929, and the KKK had yet to become disreputable, even in some northern states.)
Given the charged and intemperate nature of the contemporary accounts, I appreciated Salmond's efforts to sort out where accounts agree and where they conflict. I highly recommend this exceptionally well-written and fair-minded book

Book Description
Oh, what a difference a year makes! Especially when it's your high school senior year and you think that most of it will come off without a hitch. That's what Mark thought. Saint Hedwig's big man on campus, who was about to set sail on a ride that few people experience in a lifetime, let alone at this stretch in their lives. From the tragic death of his best friend to the discovery of the girl of his dreams, hang on for one incredible ride that leads to heartaches, hi-jinx, deception, creative escapes, mind-blowing circumstances, euphoria, disappointment and one hell of an epic battle with destiny and its source. You'll be introduced to characters with attitudes and be amazed to witness how attitudes shape character. From nuns who gamble, teach bookie math and take extortion to a deliciously new level, to all types of parochial phenomenons, experience events and happenstance that will make you blush, cry, smile and double-up in laughter, in a real-life saga that will require a couple boxes of tissues, to help you deal with all of the excrements that your body will go through. And along the way, don't be surprised if you're asked to bring doughnuts

Cousin, what were you thinking?.......2006-12-27
Cousin, I have just ordered your book and plan on reading it as soon as it arrives. I cannot wait to figure out who is who -- You do write an interesting description... I wonder what the passing Sister's at St. H's would think of you now...
I torn.......2006-08-05
I really am torn about this read. On one hand I find the writing to be sarcastically fresh and witty. On the other hand, why do I feel that I have seen this story somewhere else before?
I suppose that storylines are similar from time to time, but I recall reading somewhere else before the stories about the sex in front of the large air conditioner, and the whole death scene in the begining.
I thought the Daytona Beach story was very funny and really enjoyed the All-star segment, especially the marathon race.
I rate this a three, only because of the previously mentioned questions. If those stories are original to this book, then I would rate it a 5!!
Loved it!.......2006-08-02
I can't believe I'm writing this, but I've got to say that I found myself crying like my little niece at some of the stories told in this book. If that's not bad enough, I also found myself glued to the stories that explored some pretty hot sexual experiences, that made me either sweat like a teen aged boy, or laugh my behind off because of the "dead nuts" examples that the author was expressing.
Wow, I loved this book!
Once you pick it up, you'll never want to put it down.
Lots o laughs and something to take away.......2006-07-19
Got the book from my wife just before a business trip and didn't think too much of it until late one night. Too bad, because when I started reading, I couldn't put it down. Stayed up the entire night and didn't perform my best the following day. There's a lot of laughs that the author provides, in a sarcastic tone that really begs for more!
Also, some stories that keep you gripped to the pages. This is an emotional roller coaster ride that might be one of the best books that I've read in a long, long time!
This is beachie!!.......2006-07-13
While vacationing in Daytona Beach, I went to the local B & N for a little something to take my mind off of everything. I grabbed a few of books, two which would be good to start a barbque, and this absolute sleeper called Bring Doughnuts.
What caught my eye was the cover, what stole my heart was the story. I was actually down in Daytona with some high school friends, escaping from the husbands and kids for a week and catching the NASCAR 400 mile race. We love the track and the beach down here, and have been coming down since spring break of our senior year in 1985.
Now those of you who have read the book know why I brought that up. Those who didn't; should!
The spring break part of this book is incredible. It took me back to my senior trip down here, made me laugh and honestly, for a while took 20 years off of my life. In fact the whole book is a facinating trip from Fall to Summer in the life of some crazy, yet inspiring characters.
Sitting on this beach and reading the author's accounts of the area brought on smile after smile. Also, there are some other stories that will glue you to the pages. So if you're going to read this on the beach, have a good supply of SPF.
This book is a must for any high school senior or graduate!
Book Description
Eighty transcriptions from the late, great jazz master Bill Evans. Titles are: Autumn Leaves Here's That Rainy Day I Should Care Make Someone Happy Spring is Here The Touch of Your Lips What Is This Thing Called Love? What Kind of Fool Am I?
Customer Reviews:
Great effort but not without errors.......2001-12-12
I know how difficult it is to transcribe the equivocal voicings of Bill Evans' chords, particularly the left hand. Mostly the book is a painstaking and an accurate transcription ,but not always. There are some mistakes (accidentals missing), and an impenetrable Cm11 voicing in one piece, while the LH chord in part of "I should Care" is one inversion too low (I should Care - "Funny how sheep can send you to sleep"). This last is an example of how fond Bill was of the semitone buzz. I think he preferred voicings for G7 like (going up from just below middle C) B E F A (which is of course G9,13 really) to F A B E (a tritone lower)
Dig in to this!.......2001-12-10
I have spent many hours with the transcriptions included in this book and I plan to spend many more. For those serious enough to invest the time and energy, this compilation allows one to dissect the beautiful complexities of Evans' playing. I found myself working on playing only a few bars at a time after which I would challenge myself to use the chord voicings or melodic figures on other tunes and in different contexts.
Bill Evans is a musician's musician. And that is the reason this set of transcriptions contains such a wealth of information about jazz. Anyone serious about jazz deserves to spend time with this compilation.
TRANSCRIPTIONS I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR! THANKS.......2000-04-14
FOR THOSE WHO STRUGGLE TRYING TO TRANSCRIBE BILL EVANS PIANO SESSIONS, THIS IS A GODSENT. EXCELLENT SELECTIONS OF SOME OF HIS GREATEST RECORDINGS. JUST TO HAVE "I SHOULD CARE" IS PRICELESS. THIS WILL BE AT THE TOP OF ANY PIANO MUSICAN'S LIBRARY OF STANDARDS. A TERRIFIC BARGAIN KNOWING THE EFFORT THAT WENT INTO ACCURATE TRANSCRIBING.
one of the better transcription collections.......2000-02-06
This is actually Volume 2 (1995), and contains EIGHT (not eighty) transcriptions of Bill Evans piano parts off the recordings. This collection is better than Vol. 1. First, vol. 1 did not transcribe the comping behind the bass solos. Second, vol. 1 focused on the late Fantasy & early Warner Bros. recordings (1970s), while this collection ranges from the first trio on Riverside, some Verve solo and trio sides, and solo sides from Fantasy. Gripe: when transcribing trio recordings, is it too much to ask that the bass part also be transcribed? Songs: "Autumn Leaves" (mono version), "Spring is Here," and "What is This Thing Called Love" from PORTRAIT IN JAZZ; "Here's That Rainy Day" from ALONE; "I Should Care" and "Make Someone Happy" from TOWN HALL; "The Touch of Your Lips" and "What Kind of Fool am I" from ALONE (AGAIN). No extras (vol. 1 had a short essay and photos).
Book Description
A Calculating People is an entertaining and informative history of the birth of the American passion for numbers, tracing the history of "numeracy" from its origins in the Enlightenment to its flowering in mid-19th century America. Patricia Cline Cohen focuses on episodes that illustrate the growing skill and enthusiasm for numbers in the colonies and early republic, from the controversial inauguration of the census in Jamestown and the West Indies to the role played by "statisticks" in politics and social reform. By examining the rising prestige of quantification, Cohen sheds light on the changing ways that Americans thought about their social, political and economic relations. Now back in print, A Calculating People reveals how numeracy profoundly shaped the character of society in the early republic and provides a wholly original perspective on the development of modern America.

Book Description
Governments are planning a remarkable step in the next decade or so. They are proposing to turn off television services. Not all services--just the transmission by the major networks of "analog" TV. By these dates, it is hoped that audiences will have acquired the equipment needed to receive "digital" TV. But there are two problems. First, people have to want their TV to be transformed and be prepared to pay the cost of the new equipment. Second, a better use has to be found for the vacated spectrum which justifies the transition.
Turning Off the Television is about tomorrow's broadcasting. From the dot-com crash to Marconi and back, from the digital age forward into an uncertain future, Jock Given explores the constant shifts in the technologies, business models and social uses of television and radio. He also explains the enduring aspects of broadcast media which have attracted so much government policy attention, and what might happen to them in the future. Skeptical about the hype, optimistic about the possibilities, honest about the scale of the policy challenges, Turning Off the Television is essential reading for anyone interested in the future of media.

I've got both. I only grab this one second.
Perfect XP Reference for the non-Geek.......2004-09-19
When I first bought my XP Home machine two years ago, I went to the book store and picked up Mastering Windows XP, and I have been congratulating myself with my good choice ever since.
I started out with average knowledge about using Windows 95 and nothing on XP. This book has been invaluable to me from day one. Mr. Hart-Davis writes in a friendly, chatty tone, but still succinct enough not to drown you in words. He patiently describes the most basic concepts (all the basic stuff is grouped in the beginning pages with screen shots, very inviting to total computer beginners) all the way up to advanced features like dual boot and disaster recovery. Why, I needed the chapter on disaster recovery during the first week of owning XP!
With Mastering Windows XP I learned so much about how to get the most out of my computer, such as running explorer offline, setting up restore points, and customizing the taskbar. I recently even learned about emulation - how to install Windows 95 within Windows XP with the help of Microsoft Virtual PC, so that I can run some old games that XP considers below itself. Almost always, whenever I have a need, I can find the answer in this book.
I feel like I am a bit of a master of XP now - nothing compared to the real pros, of course, but compared to my friends and relatives, I have the confidence of a true geek in front of my computer!
Excellent reference for the novice.......2002-03-10
Well written book for the novice home user who just needs to know how to get the most (and best) from Windows XP Home Edition. This book does a good job covering the features of the Home Edition, such as using the built-in CD burner and fax in language for the non-techie.
If you are a more experienced computer user, you'll be disappointed in this book. Windows XP Inside Out or Special Edition Using Windows XP would be a better choice for you.
Introduction to XP.......2001-12-15
I'd consider this more of an introduction to
XP rather a reference for mastering XP.
If you want to know how to change the default
settings, use some of the XP tools or why chat
programs are good then this book is good for you.
If you want to know how to work around XP or
nitty gritty detail this book does not
help much
Good Book.......2001-11-05
I have seen this book; It is better than average. As far as the reviewer that thought this was the actual XP Operating system and not a book - I truly question the intelligence in that observation. Sounds like a mistake my great-grandmother might would make - not the average person.
