Book Description

Bill Kurtis, anchor of the popular true-crime TV series Cold Case Files and American Justice, used to support the death penalty. But after observing the machinations of the justice system for thirty years, he came to a stunning realization that there can be no real justice in America until it is abolished.

In Death Penalty on Trial, Kurtis revisits two harrowing murder scenes, studies the evidence, and explores the tactical decisions made before and during trial, which sent two innocent men to death row. Through these cases, we encounter the eight main reasons why the wrong people are condemned to death, and we see why new forensic science techniques could touch off a revolution of reform. Ultimately we come to a remarkable conclusion: The possibility for error in our justice system is simply too great to allow the death penalty to stand.

5 out of 5 stars If You Care About Justice, You Will Read This Book.......2007-04-29

I remember Bill Kurtis from when I was a teenager living in Chicago and watching him report the local news every night. I didn't know then that he had a law degree or a sharp-as-a-tack mind. Now I know both, and I'm thankful that he has put both to use in researching and writing this book.

The two case histories he profiles make for an engrossing read. They sound the alarm that something is definitely wrong in this country when it comes to our justice system.

This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the American justice system or the death penalty. The compelling case that Kurtis makes for abolishing the death penalty cannot be ignored.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Reading!.......2005-12-27

Kurtis, an attorney and crime reporter, formerly supported the death penalty. However, Kurtis reports reversing his position upon learning of Illinois'Governor Ryan's decision to commute all the State's death sentences to life in prison after learning that 13 death row inmates had been subsequently found innocent. The book also summarized a nationwide study of 23 years of capital cases and found reversible errors in about 70%. (Similar findings from other studies were also briefly mentioned.)

Kurtis then provides details of how two death row inmates had been wrongly convicted. The first involved a fellow Phoenix-area resident - Ray Krone, found guilty in 1992 of murder on the basis of bite marks on the victim that supposedly matched Krone's teeth. Krone was sentenced to death. (There were no supporting fingerprints, and Krone had an alibi via a friend.)

Fortunately for Krone, a cousin who worked with dentists took interest in the case, and showed the bite-mark evidence to a forensic expert who immediately concluded that there was no match. Starting with an affidavit to that effect, the cousin then began efforts for a new trial, which was granted on the basis that the first trial's "bite-mark expert video" had been introduced too late for adequate defense review. In the subsequent retrial it was also brought out that the original prosecution bite-mark "expert" was actually a novice, and that his mentor had also concluded that Krone's teeth did not match. (This information had been kept from Krone's defense.) Nonetheless, Krone was again convicted, though this time the judge had doubts and sentenced him to life in prison.

Finally, after additional defense efforts, new DNA testing techniques were brought to bear on a previously untested piece of the victim's clothing. This time the results completely exonerated Krone, and identified the real killer (already in prison).

The "good news" is that Ray became the 100th person freed from death row since 1973; the "bad news" that he had spent about ten years in prison, and it required the strong efforts of relatives and about $120,000 from them for legal research.

Other common major problems cited in the book include inexperienced defense lawyers, prosecutors who lied or suppressed evidence, unreliable eyewitnesses, jailhouse informants trading "information" for leniency, and coerced confessions obtained by disreputable interrogation means.

The "bottom-line" for Kurtis is that our legal system is too unreliable for imposing the death penalty.

5 out of 5 stars Very logical and thought out!.......2005-11-04

Whether or not you agree with the death penalty, this is a good book to check out. Kurtis gives eight solid reasons why one should be against the death penalty, and then uses two cases to back those reasons (he gives different examples on the video he has on the same subject for those who believe that only two examples are cursory).

Once a death penalty advocate himself, Kurtis changes his mind after Gov. George Ryan commutes the sentence of 164 men after DNA evidence exonerated 13 men (not 2 like the previous reader who couldn't stand it when people falsify info in book reviews said, haha). After hearing about these events, Kurtis looked deep into the judicial system to discover why so many men on death row were found innocent. The flaws he found are listed in the book.

A good read for someone who likes to strengthen their own ideas or find out what the opposition is saying. The language is easy to understand and interesting as opposed to technical. If this book doesn't make you at least think a little, you don't think! :)

It's Bill Kurtis.....what else do I need to say?

3 out of 5 stars Analyzing the System.......2005-07-28

I regularly tune into "American Justice" on A & E, so I was interested in reading this book by producer Bill Kurtis on the death penalty. Make no bones about it, Kurtis is adamantly against capital punishment. In this examination of two examples of wrongfully imprisoned men on death row, he shows why he feels so strongly about his conviction, rather than simply preaching his opinion.

The only annoying part of reading this was the narration. I'd be willing to gamble a week's wages that he dictated all of the content. It reads in the exact cadence that Kurtis speaks in: choppy sentences, and lots of colons. I could "hear" his distinct speech patterns, which is wonderful as a televised voice over, but a strange way to write in print.

That said, Kurtis' argument is solid and convincing. He carefully explains his own change of attitude regarding capital punishment; that the death penalty does nothing to deter killers, and that one person wrongly executed is one too many. Having America on the roster of countries who do implement this harsh form of punishment is not on par with the enlighted philosophy of liberty. Life in prison with no possibility of parole, especially a life in solitary confinement, is the most appropriate sentence for convicted murderers. Even if I didn't agree with the author, this examination of the American justice system is food for thought. The message comes through loud and clear, and I applaud Kurtis for tackling it.

      Book Description

As one Asian economic crisis follows another, sending shock waves through the global market, questions about the making and conduct of industrial policy in the East take on a special urgency. Observers are sharply divided as to whether the ubiquitous attempts at cooperation among competing firms in Asia have been a key to competitiveness or a corrosive form of collusion. This timely book offers a close look at the impact of industrial policies on collective action in East Asia--in Japan and Taiwan and, more briefly, in South Korea. Systematically comparative and based on interviews and original research in the local languages, it focuses on forms of collective action such as cartels, standardization, and research and development consortia in the consumer electronics and minimill steel industries. The book combines detailed case studies with analyses of the political, bureaucratic, and industrial environments in which policy is crafted. It also considers how these environments have evolved in the past decade as long-ruling conservative parties have been challenged in all three countries.

Among the book's findings is a surprising disparity between the ways in which Japan and Taiwan have handled collective action policy, despite their many historical, demographic, and economic similarities. Collective Action in East Asia also brings to light unexpected inconsistencies in the effectiveness of Japanese policy, which frequently succeeds with R&D consortia but struggles with cartels. Studying both the rapid-growth period of the 1980s and the more recent economic slowdown in East Asia, this book provides crucial information for an understanding of today's global economy.

4 out of 5 stars Shortcut to penetrate the phenomenon of "Taiwan Miracle".......2000-02-08

With the approaching of Taiwan presidential election which has been suffused with peculiarly the controversial issue of party assets ignited by KMT candidate, this book seemed to emerge at an interesting timing. Nevertheless, this piece of research presented by leading scolars in the field of IR renders an invaluable analysis of the intricate and complex political economy of my beloved country.

It's an indispensable reading for those who have been aspired for the glory of the past to stare at some components of truth behind the mist of Taiwan history.

4 out of 5 stars Ruling Party in Taiwan is Stronger.......2000-01-19

State and party-own enterprises are domaint economic powers in Taiwan before 1980. Behind the USA support, economic policies were shaped by some political elites excluded other social classes. After that, KMT, the ruling party began released more business space for private capitalists especially Taiwanese to get more legislation. So, economic policy was very different from ever not only on subject but also on scale. New KMT is mroe close to capitalist. Now, ruling unit in Taiwan is not only a political party, instead a ruling group conclude big enterprises.

4 out of 5 stars This is good but is totally disorganized........2007-09-29

This has some good photos, in fact lots of them and this is the forte of the book. But the author jumps from one town to the next all over the state. Would it have been too much work to organize the places mentioned by region of the state? I guess so from looking at this. It is pretty much a jumbled up mess from one paragraph to the next as each paragraph mentions a new town in a different area of the state without much explanation of where each place it. This makes it annoying to read.
Mentally I had to figure out constantly where each place was, scanning a map of Florida in my mind. Why not include a map in the book marking each place mentioned? Seems logical to me but no map is to be found.
However you can feel the authors sense of fun and amusement by all the wacky sights in Florida and he has done a good job of finding all of the strange places. The book is one of those slick modern books which is put together to make it appear almost like a coffee table book. It is large and well laid out. And the idea of a series of "Weird" this and that books is brilliant. There is also a Weird New Jersey book.
If only they had organized it in a coherent way!

Funny, wacky, well-written and super illustrations. This is a terrific book on our beloved state. Do not be confused by another book with the same name. It's Charley Carlson who has our state perfectly in his sights. Love this book and strongly recommend it.

        3 out of 5 stars Kind of a "weird Florida map"....but, I caution..........2006-04-27

It was interesting and fun to see these wacky sites plus to read the folklore, and it does kind of aid the tourist who wants to see weird parts of
the state. But I found more enjoyable was Elliots Kleinberg's Book
        of the same name.

3 out of 5 stars Superficial Collection of Florida Oddities.......2006-04-03

This is a rather odd collection of novelty sites in Florida. Some involve ghost stories, and others are natural phenomena. The book won't serve as a guide of places to visit, as details on location are sketchy. It is colorfully illustrated with photos.
Is there lost pirate's treasure in South Florida? Is there a skunk ape near Bardin? Check out the smallest post office in the U.S. (at Ochopee). See Florida's weirdest mailbox (a skeleton on a motorcycle).
The writing has a "gee whiz" style and is corroborated by semi-anonymous endorsements of the legends.
Interesting enough for a quick flip through, but lacking in real substance or solid research.

Kleinberg's book is more silly goofy and stereotypical of floridians. It wasn't funny or well written. I would recommend "Weird Florida" by Charlie Carlson instead.

I read this book and found it to be a joke. It does nothing but make fun of Florida and Floridians. This author seems to just throw things together and call it a book. I gave the book to the local library (in Florida) and they asked who Eliot Kleinberg was and wanted to have Charlie Carlson's Wierd Florida book instead. But between Charlie Carlson's Wierd Florida and Eliot Kleinberg's fateful attempt I would have to give away Kleinberg's Wierd Florida and keep Charlie Carlson's Wierd Florida since you never throw away quality. I did find Carlson's Wierd Florida very interesting and it did not make fun of Florida or its citizens. Charlie Carlson has a bit more respect for the state he lives in and also for the people of Florida as well. Eliot Kleinberg did nothing but make me feel awful and I have more college than he does. Anyway, I highly recommend Charlie Carlson's Wierd Florida as it is now pretty much a national level book sold in many different states and at the Barnes & Noble here in Honolulu, HI.

        5 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL THING - NOT!.......2005-09-22

This certainly sets the record straight on Florida once and for all. Florida the land of swamps, cheap block houses on slabs built exactly like garages, grossly overpriced scam artists of every persuation, and an insane manipulated real estate market where they sadly attempt to pawn this garbage then run (they just set up shop as a corporation, sell stock of which they own a large stake, then when the S hits the fan? dump the stock. Just do a check on Florida developers who have dumped their own stock in the venture after milking it dry.) Well in fact where else in the world but Florida would one find a community of multi-million dollar houses being pawn off where the entrance to the area is right in front of ...get this one..a railroad track, trailer court, and a WATER TREATMENT FACILITY? now come on how stupid are people! LOL only in Florida. Or better yet a multi-million dollar condo complex in front of a neighborhood of houses where people park their motorcycles IN THE HOUSE! LOL It is simply surreal. Yes, like the book exposes the shocking but true. In this hurricane ridden, flood prone, high priced crime filled jungle it is one of the few places on earth where one amazingly will find thrift shops filled with priceless rugs, art, antiques, and decorative arts all technically 'thrown out' out of the solid ignornace of people who know nothing of quality or value, who throw out a relatives crystal, silver, art, and antique furniture brought here from elsewhere when they moved here years ago. And incredibly these are the same people who then run to patheic cheap furniture stores priced 'by the room' where they purchase hideous garbage to fill their garage style houses, this of course is after they refinanced or no interest loaned like suckers to put that Hummer and Mercedes in front of their 900 sq. ft dump they call home. Where is the logic to all of this? Don't even ask because there is NONE. It is simply the most incredible and bizarre place on earth as the book outlines. We know they say a sucker is born every minute? It is incredible what goes on in this place! If you are seeking high culture in Florida? You better buy yogurt. Want to get dressed? As one put it 'getting dressed here means putting on your best set of teeth.' As the book shows the state is filled with the grossed level of horrid low class people and their bizzare ideas brought to reality. Anyone who thinks this place is paradise? is either brain damaged, drugged, or so blind to what quality is they aren't worth quoting. Better buy this book fast or you may be in for a rude awakening. The book provides the launchpad heads-up for future individual investgation on a number of so-called luxury places where entire counties take advantage of the history of a small once exclusive area, Palm Beach is one. A small clean island community of beautiful houses on the east coast a spot where once you get off that barrier island, and it applies to any of Florida, the entire county tries to ride the glamour and mystic of the island yet the reality is something entirely different. Once off the island you enter into a near Third World level of crime, filth ridden, grossly overpriced, hell hole of nightmare. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE CONSIDERING A MOVE OR VACATION. It is no wonder to me that prior to the turn of the 19th to 20th century this place was considered inhabitable.

It reminds me of a tabloid newspaper. I thought the price was a little high for what I got, as other books offer the same content and do not cost as much. I think the author could have spent his talents working on another subject. Like I say, it is okay, but be prepared for a rehash of what has already been published.

These are great receipes for parties! - Putting a party together, especially the food, has always been a high anxiety event for me. This book groups menus into simple and easy plans. Just follow along and you'll have yourself a guaranteed hit! There is a variety of menu styles to choose from. I personally tried two and they both went over fabulously. None of my friends believed I cooked the meal. They were convinced I sent for take-out! I had, but not for the food . . . for the book!

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes, interesting stories!.......1999-06-26

This book is chock full of great recipes!!! Having been a band crew member backstage and having tasted the culinary delights of Behind the Scenes Catering in the past. I was very excited to hear they were putting out a cookbook. Their recipes tasted as good at home as they were backstage. The recipes were very easy to follow with two glossaries in the back listing cooking and backstage terms. All the recipes serve 8 which can easily be cut in half or quarter depending upon your group. The backstage stories were interesting. Yes, this isn't a "tell all" book, but a "tell some" book. Do we really always need the filthest stories for interesting reading? I don't think so. This book gives personal insight into 41 top musical groups; how they behave backstage and what they like to eat. It's gives the recipes for all dishes served and includes the special personal items each artist requests, food or otherwise. How do certain artists keep their figure? Who drinks juice, who drinks whiskey before going onstage? The old saying, "You are what you eat" really holds true! It was interesting for me to compare the dietary regime of certain artists with how they look. Backstage Pass really is two books in one. First, a celebrity behind the scenes look. Secondly, a great cookbook. I enjoyed reading this book very much and am anxious to try more of the recipes listed!

3 out of 5 stars Light on the gossip, heavy on the recipes........1999-02-17

"Backstage Pass", written by the owners of a catering company called Behind the Scenes, has one fatal flaw -- the people who wrote it still care about working in the industry. The best tell-all books are written by people who either have nothing to lose or don't care what anyone thinks. While each act has a personable anecdote, nobody mentioned in here is going to sue for defamation of character anytime soon. The only two possible exceptions would be the Grateful Dead and Natalie Cole. The Grateful Dead, who of course broke up after Jerry Garcia died, kept the catering crew running by demanding they fetch the band members whatever popped in their heads, whether it was on the arena premises or not. Natalie Cole not only refused to get out of her limo at a benefit show until some satisfactory financial arrangement was made, but ordered enough things for her dressing room to feed an army and then only drank a bottle of water. But these tidbits are few and far between. Admittedly, these are people who spend most of their time preparing and serving foods, and thus don't exactly get to mix and mingle with the stars as much as they'd probably like to, but I still have the feeling that there's a lot being held back. For example, after Kurt Cobain of Nirvana was diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome, he'd provide the caterers with a list of things that he could eat. Just as often it'd get ignored, and Kurt would arrive at the arena faced with a backstage filled with food and could eat none of it. This would cause Courtney Love, his wife, to tear the caterers a new one. (At least according to the Nirvana biography "Come As You Are".) Did Behind the Scenes deal with Nirvana? Do they have a take on this? You'll never know from reading this book. (And that's just one example I can think of, I'm sure there are many more.) Most of the book is taken up by recipes, which look like they might be delicious, but many are geared to serve a lot of people. (Not really a surprise, after all, they have to serve the artists and the crew, which can easily run over a hundred people.) But unless you're making enough for a party or a big family, the recipes make way too much food for the average person, couple, or small family. (For example, one recipe for meatloaf requires 6 lbs. of meat, and three different kinds of meat at that. And there's a lot more to the meatloaf than just the meat.)While "Backstage Pass" offers a few helpful hints, cooking terms, and conversion tables (which are helpful), they offer no insight on how to cut down a recipe. Think about it, if a person doesn't know what "al dente" means, they're definitely not going to know how to cut down a recipe, especially since at these quantities, it can run into some expense. Nor do they offer any hints on what foods can be substituted for other foods. The recipes are definitely a bit more ambitious than your novice cook may be able to handle. On the whole, I'd recommend borrowing this, rather than buying it. The tell-all parts are skimpy and the recipes may simply be too complex or too plentiful portionwise for the casual cook.

                    Book Description

HARNESS THE FULL POWER OF ORACLE'S POWERFUL NEW UPGRADE
Oracle is the second largest software company in the world, second only to SAP in ERP vendors. Now, after five years, Oracle has come out with the newest release of their ERP system, version 11i. The "i" represents Oracle's first presentation of its applications in Internet form, one in which the concept of specific forms loaded as clients or as dumb terminals is replaced by a commitment to industry standard Internet form that should be accessible by anyone, anywhere. This book explains in clear language for financial as well as IT professionals how to utilize Oracle applications to retrieve information.
Oracle E-Business Suite 11i: Implementing Core Financial Applications will walk the reader through the process of the Oracle 11i upgrade/conversion and provide a tutorial path for navigating through financials. Its step-by-step guidance shortens the implementation process by providing the menu paths of the actual package and in-depth descriptions of how to use the screens as well as explanations of such user-friendly aspects as customizing the program for individual use.
Whether your company has been a dedicated Oracle customer or is considering adopting the powerful capabilities of this latest version, Oracle E-Business Suite 11i: Implementing Core Financial Applications will help you quickly master the program and turn it into one of your business's most powerful back-office tools.

                    4 out of 5 stars A good Introductory Book.......2004-05-03

This book is a good starter book; much better than Oracle Materials. It gives good Introduction to Oracle Modules GL,AR and AP with the help of screen shots. (in fact, lots of screen shots help the understanding).

Though the contents are not for an advanced user (who would use Oracle User guide then) but still for a person who has not seen Oracle Financial Applications at all, it would be a good first step.

I did not rate 5 star because
                    1. it did not cover 2 financial modules : Fixed Assets and Cash Management

                    2. A chapter on what is happening behind the screen in applications (like general concept of Oracle Tables, TRMs etc. would have helped.

                    3. Should have included as an appendix: Additional Sources of Information like Metalink, OTN web etc.

                    1 out of 5 stars Hopeless!.......2002-12-18

This book is some kind of joke. And I'm the last one to laugh, 'cause I had to spend over 60$ on this one. It is full of screenshots and hardly any verbage. If there is any, it simply gives you the basic navigation instructions for 11i screens. Well, it did one good thing though, it inspired me to write a book on the subject that I have no knowledge on. Here's what I'm going to do. Get all the user manuals, tear them apart and throw the pages in the air. Which ever land on a table, simply collect them, bind them together, and viola...you have a book with a title that reads something like "Implementing some hi-tech applications...blah blah blah..." !

                    1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2002-12-12

Though there are very few books about Oracle Applications Version 11i, this is not a good reason to buy this book. One gets the feeling that it has been assembled from a set of consultant's hand outs. It is badly written and the publisher seems to have dispensed with the services of editor and proof reader. For example, diagrams 1.3 and 1.4, meant to demonstrate the difference between single organization and multi-organization structures are in fact completely identical. This doesn't give one a great deal of confidence in the accuracy of the rest of the information in the book. The section on conversion contains the sentence "Converting legacy data can be time-consuming, expensive and complex" and then in the following paragraph "If the volume is too large, convert the legacy data via a custom software conversion program. The process can be complex and time consuming". I think we got the point the first time.
It would be great if there was a good book about Oracle Applications, but this isn't it. I feel embarrassed to have spent my employer's money on it, if I had paid for it myself I would be very angry indeed.
