Based on the "Structural drama" we got a different option to see the incredible notes compiled after several interviews at Laramies' residents who was shock (as the rest of the world) for Matthew Shepards' case. I loved it.
The Laramie Project.......2006-06-15
Like a quilt, each little piece of play is woven together beautifully. Some pieces are juxtaposed next to contrasting pieces, but step back -- the entire piece is a sight to see, and touch, and feel.
What a sad, revealing, fearful, fearless, exasperating and lovely work of theatre.
This truly is an American quilt -- the ugly, the bittersweet, the glorious.
Absolutely recommended for anyone mature enough to deal with a tragedy of hate.

I am the 61-year-old father of a 24-year-old son who appeared in The Laramie Project two years ago, when he was a college senior. I sat in the front row of the theater in the round in which the play was produced. The play did not "get to me"--it dragged me into the worst What If a parent can have: what if my son were gay (he's not), what if he were murdered--how would I react, what would I feel?
The question was answered via the actor who played Dennis Sheperd. When he delivered his monologue to the Aaron McKinney character, and referred to Matt Sheperd as his firstborn son and his hero, I absolutely lost it. Hatred, a desire for vengeance, but a recognition that this was the start of a time to heal. A message like this can go out of style...never. For any parent, The Laramie Project is terribly difficult to witness. But witness it you must.
Powerful piece of work.......2004-01-29
I give this story five stars because it is a powerful piece of work that taught me a lot of things about how American society deals with homosexuality. I've never been to Wyoming but this story helps to give some insight on how things were in that state when this horrible tragedy happened. I hope more people get a chance to read this book as it is evident, based on the speeches by some members of this government, that homophobia is still present in this society. That kind of institutionalized homophobia was seen in its worst form when Matthew Shepard was viciously attacked and killed because he was gay. This book certainly is an eye-opener and for that it deserves the best praise. Kudos to Moises Kaufman.

This is a great book. It's quick, concise, well-organized, easy to understand, not dumbed down, practical ... I could go on. Plus, Prof Porter actually emailed back when I wrote him with comments and questions. The book includes questions throughout for further thought, the answers to which are in the back and resemble class notes. I wish I could find a book as good as this on more topics.

Sports are perhaps the most visible expression of the ideals of masculinity in our society, and figure as a training ground on which young boys are taught what it means to be a man. Given the involvement of sports with masculinity, the homosexual athlete becomes a paradox, and the recent explosive growth of gay sporting leagues, a puzzle.
Pronger explores the paradoxical position of the gay athlete in a straight sporting world, examines the homoerotic undercurrent subliminally present in the masculine struggle of sports, and explicates the growth of gay sports in the framework of the developing gay culture.

Where's the juicy stuff???.......2005-09-21
A book that lets you "in" on the secret of locker room sex, but the author seems more amazed that this actually goes on and exist in real life. I bet when he discovered that there was men to men sex in the showers after a game he decided to write the book. What about all the affairs these players have amongst themselves (yet manage to keep it on a downlow). and what about the groopies that service or relieve these testesterone fill athletes in the locker-rooms? From ancient times (read The Greek Way by Edith Hamilton) there has been alot of sexual activity in the background of sports. If you werent straight and had the opportunity to share in that wouldn't you also be part of or a product of it?
Earnest study of a hot topic.......2003-12-08
Brian Pronger's 1992 book still remains interesting today. For most of the first part Pronger constructs his thesis methodically and earnestly: that homosexuality is a subversion of the basic patriarchal structure of Western society, that mandates the power and domination of men over women. Conventional masculine sports represents a heightening of patriarchal expression, notably in the violence of contact sports such as football and hockey. Thus, the gay man (and the book is exclusively about gay men) involved in sports finds himself caught in a paradox, simultaneously subverting the orthodox patriarchy while in many cases worshipping the conventional masculine ideal.
Pronger's views are convincing, though the reader may feel that he takes too long to build his case. However, the book has many excerpts from interviews with gay athletes and gay men who are simply interested in sports, and these anecdotes lend immediacy and interest to the sometimes rather dry analysis. They also, one must admit, are frequently hot, as are the copious illustrations. Pronger's succinct description of the psychological significance of the jockstrap is a classic of its kind. All in all, Pronger's book offers titillation and elucidation in equal, satisfying parts.
The Arena of Maculinity.......1999-12-22
I think this book is very well researched and extremely interesing, although at times it felt as if the author fell in the realm of "orthodoxy" that he was analyzing and deconstructing. Tough subject, though, for as the author intelligently describes, sports are another tool of the patriarchal orthodox social/economical system,and as consequence, people without an acceptable role in that system really have no place, in some sports at least. In my opinion, the best thing about this book is the thorough analysis that the author makes about how our culture created and struggles to maintain the patriachal system which opresses mainly women and anyone else who does not fit in neatly. An excellent read, could not put it down.
An excellent overview of the masculine sports stereotype.......1998-06-06
I had doubts when purchasing this book, but found it to be very well researched and easy to understand. Full of interesting quotes and interviews I would highly recomend it to any individual interested in the realtionship between sports and athletes, be they straight or gay. A most excellent book and one that has been badly needed in the area of gay studies.

There is too much (for me) about marginal matters such as the history of spam and minute details of various methods.
I was looking for a clear exposition of the principles of filtering and the corresponding mathematics but this
I can't find. The term "decision matrix" is used a lot without being defined.The stuff concerning Bayesian filters on page 76 is quite meaningless. It's all very disappointing.

This book provides the history of spam, so we know how it all started, as well as the reasoning and theories behind the current spam technologies, whithout getting bogged down in minutia. I found this book quick and enjoyable to read. Very informative. Highly suggested if you are a sysAdmin (like me) who has or will build a spam filter, or wants to know how they work and why. Good for programmers as well looking for the theories.

Reading this book was fun. I was doing some research on spam and found this book was exactly what I was looking for. This book covers (almost) all aspects of spam, including the history, the current status, the principles of anti-spam systems, statistical algorithms, case studies, etc. This book is a good start point for understanding spams and means to stop them, although it does not contain a lot of in-depth technical details. I was amazed by the author's style, which was quite energetic and entertaining. This book made my research a pleasant experience. I strongly recommend this book for those who are interested to know how spams came and how we fight them.

Ending Spam from Mr. Zdziarski is a well written BASIC and easy to understand INTRODUCTION to get a technical overview of todays spam fighting solutions on the market.
Also it is written on the cover that it is f.e focused towards developers, network admins etc. I would consider the target customer to be IT Managers, or other curious people who want to get an overview.
Thats what it does and it does it very well in my eyes.
The book provides simplified, abstract overviews of some available spam filters solutions.
The book is provided into 3 parts
- An Introduction part to spam filtering (Chapter 1-4)
- A part describing "Fundamentals of Statistical Filtering" (Chapter 5-9)
- an the third part describing "Advanced Concepts of Statistical Filtering" (Chapter 10-14)
Its a bit confusing that Chapter 4 has the same title than Part II. So perhaps Chapter 4 should have been part of "Part II" ?
The Chapters which I found most interesting were:

I am sure the author could have easily filled the book with Chapter 7 alone. The book is very entertaining and has a nice motivating writing style. You might at times find some rant about the spammers which I have chosen to ignore as it doesnt contain any valuable information or anything which I didnt know already. While I might agree to some of the authors views, I believe that the rant does unfortunately do exactly the opposite in my eyes and does give spammers credit to how they do their work.
I personally was actually looking for a companion book to "The Book of Postfix" to help me further explore new anti spam technology.
I was hoping to find overview charts, being able to compare different solutions,features, (dis)advantages. So in this sense, I was actually looking for workshop style instructions, tuning advice, troubleshooting advice etc.
The authors does explain f.e (Chapter 14) Collaborative Algorithms but he does not go into detail which products support the feature and how to perform the setup. He does provide some weblinks in his book from which the interested reader might further investigate the topic.
From reading the Chapter10 on "Testing Theory" its easier to conclude why the author doesnt go into more detail. If he would have done so, the book could have been easily 2-3 times the size.
I assume, this is partly due to the fact that the anti spam technology /products/market is still fairly young .
Summary:
"Ending Spam" gives a very BASIC INTRODUCTION to the current available Anti spam technology and some chosen products. After you have read the book you have a first vague idea what type of solutions exist. You will actually need other books to intensify the "knowledge" you have gained here.
The fact that the book is written in simple terms makes it easily acessable for a wide market, however if you are a technichian you will perhaps find that the book just doesnt contain enough "meat" for you.
I would still recommend the book for Managers which need to know only the rough details, beginners, or a first time read for newcomers.
