Book Description
An astonishing story of bravery and honor: One man's quest -- against incredible odds -- to pursue justice . . . and to uncover the painful truths of his own background.
From the sagging row houses of Paterson, New Jersey, to the cocaine fields of Colombia, from the razor wire of Rikers Island to the streets of New York City, Bernard Kerik has dedicated his life to a single goal: to fight the injustice he sees around him. A jail warden with a black belt and a background in international security and anti-terrorism, he took a substantial pay cut to become a beat cop on the streets of Times Square in 1986. A fearless narcotics detective, he went undercover to buy drugs in Harlem, seized millions of dollars of cocaine from the drug lords of the Cali cartel, and was awarded the Police Department's Medal of Valor for saving the life of a fellow officer. In the 1990s, as the city's Commissioner of Correction, he ended the hellish violence at Rikers Island and transformed it into a model of its kind. Today, as Kerik directs a police force of 55,000 -- the largest municipal force in the world -- his battles continue.
And yet Bernard Kerik's greatest battle was not pitched on tough city streets, but within himself. For, even as he was driven to seek justice in every corner of the world, this extraordinary man never looked back until he reached the top. And when he did, he faced the greatest unsolved case of his life -- the tragic mystery of his own mother, who abandoned her young son forty-one years ago.
The odyssey of Bernard B. Kerik is a poignant tale with lessons for all about what it means to be a good and brave man, and just how each of us should aspire to those ideals. A testament to courage in the service of honor, The Lost Son is a harrowing, inspirational, and uniquely American story.
Customer Reviews:
Uneven, Self Promoting, sometimes interesting.......2007-09-03
On the plus side we do get a look into the workings of the NYPD which I found fascinating. But Kerik is a shameless self promoter. I was almost embarrassed to read some of his self praise. Of course his story is perfect for an American audience -- we love someone who achieves much more then his background would predict. But we would also like our heroes to be a bit humble while they achieve so much. Some of the writing is uneven, especially the storyline of his mother. Since he has so little data on his mother, its difficult for him to generate a very engaging story there. If you like police stories and can find this book on deep discount you'll be pleased with it.
A Book About Heroes.......2006-12-28
I could not put this book down! Bernard Kerik tells his story by telling the story of the heroes he encounters along the way. His life experiences are sometimes normal, other times anything but normal and all make for a fascinating read.
Glad I didn't write a review when I actually read it.......2006-03-24
I would have rated in 5 stars for the quality of the story, but now that I know the majority of it has elements of untruth, it gets one star, and only because I can't rate it any lower. He also left out a lot of things, like at least one marriage. How do you forget THAT?
Based on the things that came out later, he probably should have been IN Riker's Island, not running it. He sounds like someone who gets promoted because nobody likes them and there isn't enough on them to get them fired.
Fictional Autobiography.......2005-10-19
I enjoyed sections of this book, which I will go into later, but first, the main thing you need to know before reading this book, is that it is Kerik's account of how he wants to be seen. It is far from the truth. If you're okay with reading this book as a work of marginal and occasional nonfiction, then enjoy. If you don't know what I'm referring to, look up Kerik on wikipedia. He was forced to withdraw his name from the Homeland Security post Bush appointed him to for reasons far too numerous to post here. Kerik admits to none of those things in the book. When he does briefly cover past indiscretions, his book replaces fact with fairy tale.
Okay, so what did I like? His accounts of his passion for the martial arts, and how it gave him confidence growing up. I found that inspiring. His drive to perform and excel in his work. His comraderie with fellow officers. His experiences as an undercover narcotics agent and descriptions of the guys he worked with and the methods they used to disrupt the drug trade. His ideas and leadership techniques when he was in charge at Rikers and NYPD (mostly topically covered).
If the book focused more on how he led Rikers and NYPD, I would have like it a lot more. That's what I thought I was buying into with a book on a former NYPD chief. Unfortunately, this is not the focus of the book. In fact, "focus" is something the book sorely lacks. The organization was awful or nonexistent. He entertained me for a while with tales of his childhood, but then he suddenly shows up in 2001. And he does this time-travel numerous times. Each time he does it I find myself wanting to skip from his present and jump to the next chapter where he gets back to the sometimes interesting parts in his past.
He tries unsuccessfully to weave in the "lost son" looking for his mother theme. He points out in the book how his mother abandoned him and basically made his life miserable, so I have a hard time empathizing with his hunt for her killer. When he tells you she becomes a low end prostitute in the worst part of town, and that he's tracking down her killer nearly 40 years after her death, it is apparent even to non-detectives like myself that he's not going to uncover anything. Then at the end he goes back to the crime scene with his NYPD posse & you discover that the whole neighborhood where she lived & was killed was completely razed and built over. That was a trip I wish he didn't take me on.
If the book was carefully edited it could have been a lot better. I was suprised it was allowed to get to print in this fashion. He noted that the day he finished writing it was 09/11/2001 - so that might explain the rush. He added a little section on 9-11 at the very end.
A FRAUD, A CON MAN, A SOCIOPATH.......2005-06-19
GIVEN KERIK'S REPORTED MOB TIES, AMORALITY AND CASHING IN ON THE 9/11 TRAGEDY, IT'S NO SURPRISE TO READ THIS CON JOB PIECE OF FICTION. HIS GHOSTWRITER IS PROBABLY A FICTION WRITER BECAUSE ALTHOUGH IT IS WELL WRITTEN, THE STORY IS A FRAUD. WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN SAUDI ARABIA? HE STALKED AND TERRORIZED WOMEN ACCORDING TO THE WASHINGTON POST. WHY DIDN'T MR. LAW ENFORCEMENT WHO CLAIMED TO BE SO HIGHLY SKILLED THAT HE COULD TRACK DOWN THE BIGGEST DRUG LORDS IN THE WORLD...TRACK DOWN HIS OWN INFANT DAUGHTER --THE ONE HE ABANDONED? HOW ABOUT THE TRUTH? HE IS A CON MAN, ABANDONED HIS OWN CHILD, IS EGOMANIACAL AND IS NOTHING MORE THAN A THUG. HE WRITES ABOUT SOME TEACHER IN SCHOOL WHO TOLD HIM HE WOULD NEVER AMOUNT TO ANYTHING. GUESS WHAT? HE WAS RIGHT. BERNARD KERIK IS JUST WHAT THAT TEACHER SAID HE'D BE. A BIG ZERO.
Book Description
Mary Grimley Mason describes the viewpoints, struggles, strategies, and triumphs of eighteen women with a range of physical and sensory impairments. She relates how each came to terms with her disability and achieved self-identity and self-sufficiency in an able-bodied world.
Drawing on thirty extensive interviews, Mason skillfully interweaves her own experience of childhood polio with the voices of impaired women across generations and from diverse race, ethnic, class, and work backgrounds. Although each woman's story and perspective are unique, the compelling narratives in this illuminating and teachable volume reveal shared concerns and feelings about the ways in which the disabled see themselves, how others perceive the impaired, and how our workplace culture perpetuates the double hindrance of gender and disability discrimination. The women profiled here express in their own words the process of claiming their disability and integrating it into their identity, the adjustment to various dependencies and caregivers, and approaches to coping with social discrimination and marginalization. They also discuss overcoming such obstacles in the workplace as an employer's refusal to grant an interview, lack of accommodations after employment, and negative stereotyping on the job or in job placement.
In these accounts we meet, for example, Debbie, born with cerebral palsy, who struggled to get her family to accept her as she is; Barbara, born with orthopedic problems, who confronted her mother's fear that she would not be employed or find a husband; and Adrienne, blind from birth, who aggressively confronted discrimination in the workplace through litigation.
Taken together, the stories of these ordinary yet remarkable individuals build a sense of community. Working against Odds tells disabled women that they are not alone in grappling with the tremendous barriers to independence and helps able-bodied readers understand the challenging life choices and work experiences of those with impairments. As a whole, the insightful book offers an intimate view of disability history and issues in America.

Book Description
The life of a cowboy in the late nineteenth century was far from romantic and glorious. Cowboys made about a dollar a day and worked from sunup to sundown in the broiling sun and biting cold. But that doesn't stop many of us from wanting to be a cowboy or cowgirl when we grow up. We really don't want to rough it for too long, though; we like to be pampered. In Texas you can be pampered: You can ride a horse up a mountainside or watch real cowboys hard at work, and enjoy a gourmet meal and sleep in a comfortable bed.
Book Description
An illustrated history of labor organization in Detroit.
Customer Reviews:
Labor History in Motown.......2000-05-23
Babson's book looks at labor movement history in Detroit as a microcosm of American history as a whole. The field is one not usually covered by historians, and the nearness in time of the events allow for the use of living sources, both of which contribute to make the telling different and authentic. I liked the way that Babson connected events in Detroit with the big picture, as with the sidebar on the Debs campaign for President. The feeling that he conveys of those outdoor Socialist rallies is like that of a tent revival, a fervor generally absent from the politics on the left today. Detroit's leadership in American industrialism for most of the century now ending give the story of Labor's rise national importance, but natives will probably enjoy the book more, given it's intimate portrait of familiar places and faces from our recent past.

Customer Reviews:
Rock On!.......2006-10-02
This book rocks! My favorite band in the book is Andromeda from a Buck Rogers TV show in the 1970s. They had a mind control signal in their music that made the kid all over the universe riot.
Some Were Missing........2006-07-03
This book was very informative, but also imcomplete. Some fictional bands were missing. Where were the Beasties and Way-Outs from the Flintstones episode "Masquerade Party? Or Mystery from Justine's Bateman's movie "Satisfaction?" Or even The Heights and S Club 7? I hope they put out a second edition that includes these overlooked musicians.
Amusing reference book.......2006-01-21
The Rocklopedia Fakebandica is a silly yet thoroughly entertaining reference book that lists all sorts of fictional bands and singers that have appeared in movies or television shows. T. Mike Childs has compiled a reasonably complete list of all sorts of fake musicians, some prominent (such as Spinal Tap or the Monkees) and many limited to a minor Married with Children or Clockwork Orange reference.
Unlike many reference books, Childs doesn't make any sort of attempt at objectivity, filling his entries with humorous remarks. This is not a very serious subject, and Childs doesn't treat it as such. At the same time, he does provide the necessary information. It's hard to think of fake bands that he doesn't include; this book even cites obscure sources like The Giant Gila Monster and certain TV shows that ran for only a month twenty years ago. The only real flaw in this text is a lack of an index.
If there's a lesson to be gleaned from this book, it seems to be that most fictional musicians are either intentionally (Spinal Tap) or unintentionally (most Elvis movies) funny. But looking for overall themes in a book like this is kind of silly; it should just be enjoyed as it is.
Very amusing; surprisingly complete.......2005-04-11
I picked up this book thinking that I would flip through the pages only to find some bands. Quite to my surprise, just about EVERY fake band I could think of was mentioned in the book (with the exception of LoveFist, a rather amusing Scottish band from the Grand Theft Auto series).
The book includes all sorts of bands from TV and movies - some obvious, some very obscure. For example, along with bands like Spinal Tap and The Monkees, it includes such bands as Oozing Meat, Tears & Vomit, Joanie and the Slashettes/Hepcats (all from Married With Children), Autobahn (from The Big Lebowski), and even composers and singers from Monty Python - like Johann Gambolputty de von... (you know), Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson, Inspector Jean-Paul Zathapatique, and many others that you probably never even heard of.
TV and movie bands--the way they weren't.......2005-03-17
Fun book about TV and movie bands that were mostly fictional. It is an interesting read, very informative but far from complete and it did raise a few questions. I say mostly fictional because a few mentioned became bands because of the TV show/movie they were created for. The first question is, should they be considered fake once they are technically a band? Spinal Tap, included here, were created for a movie, but played their own instruments, did concerts, and released an album years after the release of the movie. The Monkees did not play their instruments (at least for the first 3 albums, according to the band), but did tour and also outlived the timespan of their show. Are these fake bands? Also, the author lists every band on a marquee in the movie That Thing You Do. Does each band really need a seperate entry since they are never developed beyond a 2 second glimpse on a marquee in a movie that has nothing to do with them? If he were to include every fake band on every billboard/flyer in every movie the book would be ridiculously long. I feel the book could be more concise and deal with only reasonably developed characters (i.e.:at least shown onscreen for more than one second). One minor rant to the author, slow down with the word titular, I felt I was reading the word in every other entry sometimes. Over and above the aforementioned, the book is quite enjoyable and anyone into rock music as pop culture should enjoy the book.

Essays Are Wealth of Ideas.......2004-12-03
The essays written by these successful science fiction writers are all very interesting in thier own right. Thier review of the movie is also helpful to gain a deeper insight into its meaning, or lack thereof.
The Matrix is the movie for our time.......2004-05-17
We stand at the doorway of a whole new world. Of course if there was ever a powercut that new world would cease to exist. Never the less I am grateful to any author who will construct a deeper insight into those worlds such is given here. We need visionaries to show us what can be possible and what to be careful of... Its a wonderful time to be online..
interesting anthology.......2003-05-16
the eve of the release of the first of two sequels (the number 3 is the power number in science fiction - reviewer babble). The eighteen contributions come from a virtual "cyberpunk and science-fiction visionaries" with most of the inputs quite interesting especially when two authors are diametrically opposite in their interpretation of the film. Debates range the gamut from whether the heroes are cyberpunks opposed to the overreach of science placing a web on their personal lives or comic book superheroes on the screen. If one is looking for the next great philosophical debate or a treatise on the Second Coming, then go elsewhere. However, fans of the movie will enjoy the discussion, much of which is simple fluff, but also enough fun stuff. Though enjoyable, the bottom line of EXPLORING THE MATRIX is the psycho prattle debate seeks hidden meaning when to many of the fans it is simply an entertaining flick.
Harriet Klausner
From *DarkEcho*: For Both MATRIX & Cyberpunk Fans.......2003-04-16
You never know quite what to expect from a nonfiction tie-in to a
popular film or series. (I'm sure one of these days we'll see THE RELIGIOUS IMPLICATIONS OF DOCTOR WHO,
and HANNIBAL LECTER'S FAVORITE RECIPES and they'll be just as bad as
those titles suggest.) But EXPLORING THE MATRIX, edited by Karen
Haber, exceeds whatever the expectations are -- and with considerable
brio.
EXPLORING THE MATRIX offers far more than a choice of red or blue
pill. There are predictable references to William Gibson, P.K Dick,
Charles Dodgson, Jack Williamson, and Nick Bostrum; but there are
also random flashes of the unexpected: "Punk fashion has always been
protective armor. The spikes, the leather, the razors, the zippers,
they are what you put on after flower-power has choked to death on
its own vomit. It's Kevlar for the soft marshmallow core of youthful
idealism." (Bruce Sterling)..."The result of figure _without_ ground
is _Symbolism_." (Dean Motter)... "the most successful movements are
always punished by becoming clichés" (David Brin)...Joe Haldeman
muses briefly about interpreting the movie through the obscure
mythology of sf fandom (and wisely tiptoes by that sleeping dog.)
You'll find some agreement and constant contradictions: THE MATRIX is
nothing but style / THE MATRIX has spiritual depth. It has nothing to
do with cyberpunk; it has everything to do with cyberpunk. And the
essays say a surprising (and contradictory) amount about cyberpunk
itself. Most of the essays are more entertaining than weighty. It's
all well-written, formalized "sitting around the bar with very
intelligent, witty friends at a great con" stuff rather than
dissertation material. You'll find yourself wanting to continue the
discussion -- "Well, yes, but what about..." or "Oh no! I have to
disagree..."
Paul DiFillippo's essay on literary influences solidly connects
everything and everyone from the Bible, Blake, and Baum to Michael
Moorcock and Neil Gaiman. Haber considers the black joke that the
high-tech sfx movie is profoundly anti-science. Alan Dean Foster
proves that the movie's true meaning is that nerdy geeks can triumph.
Ian Watson's essay connects THE MATRIX to French social theorist Jean
Baudrillard and convincingly argues it should be seen as a superhero
movie exploiting, rather than exemplifying, cyberpunk themes. John
Shirley seems to be the only writer to recognize "the group of films
galvanized by the same furnace of fermenting realization" along with
THE MATRIX. Rick Berry writes on the ancient past of CGI and
expresses refreshing optimism about cyberspace.
The essays are accompanied by the magnificent art of Darrel Anderson
(who also supplies an essay) and Robert Zahrab (which, sadly I could
get only an impression of since I have the galley and not the
finished product) and spiffy design. A must-read for the film's fans,
EXPLORING THE MATRIX it's highly recommended reading for science
fiction buffs as well. -- Paula Guran

How to Do Everything with Ebay Business.......2006-07-10
This book provides a good presentation on the intrigacies of
Ebay selling. The author describes the importance of getting
user feedback because this is a function of how well we do.
It's necessary to get the buyer's attention with catchy selling
presentations/descriptions. Generally, no reserve auctions make
better sales. The Turbo lister is recommended for multiple sales.
Publishing a picture can be critical because many buyers want to
see what they're purchasing. Lastly, a good description is crucial to sale. Provide all relevant details. i.e.
- guarantee
- ease of utilization
- general condition
- minor repairs , if needed
- manufacture date
- model number etc.
The more detail provided- the better it is for the potential
buyer. Very often, buyers are looking for a very specific
make, model and condition of the item for sale. If you provide
this information on a timely basis, it is more probable that a
sale will be consumated. In addition, pricing is important.
Price an item so that it sells quickly. If the price is set
too high, there may be little or no interest. Sometimes, it pays
to sell around a holiday. With the pressure of holiday shopping,
consumers just may pay more money for the convenience of getting
the item early without long waiting lines or extensive travel
from store to store looking for available stock at an affordable
price.
Try Overstock.com Auctions!.......2005-01-19
Anyone with the least bit of PC knowledge and customer service skills can sell on any on-line venue. Most have it set up to walk you through step by step. Besides, eBay raised their fees so high as of 2/18/05 that many sellers are flocking to other venues like www.overstock.com/auctions!

I'm not an expert of eBay by any means. In fact, the last time I listed some software on eBay I had to have my sister-in-law handle the listing duties. I just an not that brave when it comes to actually making money online. Sure I can handle the technical stuff like hosting my images on my web site and making up templates for my eBay listings, but selling on eBay involves much more then merely technical details. It is a business and that means you must learn how to think like a business person and know what your options are while doing business on eBay. That is where this book shines. And that is why a book like this is so good for us timid sellers. It is perfect book for those of us who need a lot of hand-holding when they start doing business online.
How To Do Everything With Your eBay Business covers everything there is about selling stuff on eBay. From the essential business practices such as setting goals for your eBay business and deciding what to sell to learning about how to be more effective in actually selling your items by writing up enticing descriptions and how to use necessary services and software, to the little talked about selling options available to the serious eBay business person like Half.com, eBay Moters, and Sothbys. And don't forget the accounting help you need to do to keep the IRS happy.
In my humble opinion, there is no better source for learning about doing business on eBay no one any more readable as How To Do Everything With Your eBay Business.

Profit from live auctions, attract bids with clear and quick-loading images and attention-getting descriptions, and learn about reserves and 'buy it now' pricing with the aid of Greg Holden's How to Do Everything With Your eBay Business, a step-by-step resource which advocates using pro secrets to sell more successfully. There are other ebay books on the market, but this one clearly covers a wider range of basics than most, ranging from designing a sale to opening up your own Web store via ebay's system.
