This is serious stuff. The most widely used medical text in the world and the hypochondriac's bible, the Merck has the lowdown on the vast expanse of human diseases, disorders and injuries, as well as their symptoms and recommended therapy. It's intended for physicians and medical students, but though the type is tiny and the language technical, the Merck's a valuable volume for anyone with more than a passing interest in bodily ills.

A couple months ago I purchased the 18th edition of the Merck Manual. I absolutely love it. It's a great reference book for any MT. The book is well written, well organized, and full of information. It's a great book for signs and symptoms, etiologies, etc. As far as I have noticed it is very thorough. It was definitely money well spent. I love it!

VERY UNHAPPY CAMPER.......2007-06-26

I ordered this book to be shipped to Puerto Rico. Was told that it would be there by 06/25. Still don't have it. According to Amazon's online tracking the book arrived in Puerto Rico yesterday but still has not been delivered. Customer service tells me that it was shipped via ParcelPool. I made an inquiry at ParcelPool and was told that they work "in partnership" with the US Postal Service. The representative told me that the EARLIEST that we will get delivery of this book will be on Thursday!! Explain to me how that is considered 06/25 delivery and how on earth anyone would consider that good customer service!!!!

One of Maurice "Mo" Jourdane's greatest contributions to the advancement of farm workers in the fields of California was his relentless - and ultimately successful - effort to end agricultural employers' required use of the short-handled hoe by laborers in the state's lucrative lettuce, celery, sugar beet, and strawberry industries. The short hoe, known by Hispanic farm workers as el cortito (the short one), was the cause of severe and permanent crippling of hundreds of thousands of field laborers. It required workers to spend as many as ten to twelve hours each day, often in more than 90 degree heat, stooped over in a back-breaking posture, thinning and weeding plants for agribusiness employers who profited immensely from the workers' low cost labor. The text and eight pages of photos from the period chronicle Jourdane's decade-long struggle to research and advocate for a state ban of the short hoe and his efforts to protect other civil and human rights of California field workers. Parading through the pages of El Cortito are most of the principal players in the struggle for the rights of farm workers, from César Chávez and Dolores Huerta to Governors Jerry Brown and Ronald Reagan. This document is critical for an understanding of continuing injustices that plague contemporary Latino (and other immigrant/minority) labor struggles in the garment, service, and heavy production industries of the nation. Jourdane's historical summation of the farm workers' struggle for justice emphasizes that despite real gains that California farm laborers achieved in the 1960s and 1970s, today much more work remains to ensure safe and decent working conditions.

Sometime in Troppo at the Speed of the 4th.......2007-05-02

This book was published in 2001, so the 29th of November of that year is not covered. I can understand why the former Beatles must be annoyed that their separate lives are constantly compiled together, but as they have probably figured out by now, Beatledom doesn't end so easily. And undoubtedly they were interested in what each other was putting out for competitive reasons, so there is some logic in writing about them collectively. This book is a pretty exhaustive chronicle of the former Fab's tours, recording sessions, lawsuits and public spats. It gives date-by-date accounts of what these four men, their wives, friends, family and business associates were doing from 1970 to 2001. There are some odd entries, such as one for 1983 which claims that Paul's single "So Bad" went to number one in 1983. Other sources have it as a b-side of "Pipes of Peace," stalling outside of the top twenty, which is probably more accurate since if it did top the charts, it would have appeared on Paul's various "best-of" collections. Anyway it is a bit much to expect 100% accuracy for a text covering so much time and so many lives. This is a great reference work for anyone interested in what happened after 1969. Be prepared for four grown men engaging in a lot of mutual bickering and snide comments.

This book was awful and not useful at all. I had assumed that it would be a "how-to" book on creative ways to save money, but live better. It only told stories of the authors' friends' selfish ways to trick people into helping them.

I bought this book on Amazon, used, and am glad I didn't pay full price. While it had some funny points (I especially liked the glossary of terms, particularly 'Salvation Armani') I was hoping for more useful advice, not simply "save money on furniture by inheriting items from your parents." It's also a 'read once, file away the knowledge and pass on the book' type of read, and a quick one at that.

Fantastic BookýPerhaps a Little Gender- and Locale-Biased.......2002-03-09

This is the perfect book for any young, single person just starting out on their own. Much of it is probably better left to the bolder among us, but it still makes for great reading, regardless of how much of its advice you actually end up using. It *is* filled with much practical advice and, more importantly, fantastic wit.

I have to agree with another reviewer that the authors *do* seem a little depedent on expense accounts which might not be an option for much of their readership (in fact, for practically no one in my personal sphere). I thought, too, that they were, at times, a little gender-biased and I often had a hard time trying to find the male gender equivalent to their suggestions. Similarly, some might find it difficult to use the advice in the book while not living in major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.

You should still find a wealth of useful tips for day-to-day living here and if you have any ability at all of taking what's left and translating it into your own life, you'l find it well worth the effort. If you don't, buy it anyway, and enjoy it simply for its fantastic wit and a glimpse at the delightful (and, sometimes, delightfully seedy) lives of the young urban and glamorous.

Nice idea, but lacks true substance.......2002-02-02

While the sections on finding a place to live and managing your wardrobe is informative and entertaining, the section on entertainment is incredibly lacking.

The authors assume everyone has an expense account, so you can "expensploitate" various purchases. Even if we weren't in a bad economy, this is a bad idea and the best and fastest way to get fired from a job. At one point, reference is made to carrying $10,000 debt on a credit card as if that's acceptable. Excuse me, but if you're making under $30K a year, carrying $10K in credit card debt is one of the dumbest things to do (esp since they were talking about this debt while covering the fashion section).

It is only when you come to the entertainment section that you realize the authors are expecting their readers to dress and act glam all the time. For example, they include a testimonial from someone who ate rice and beans for six days a week so they could splurge on a fancy meal once a week. Why not just pack a sandwich or leftovers for lunch? Oh right, they don't really suggest you seriously learn how to cook as long as you can make soup, an unsatisfying vegetarian meal, or hors d'oeuvres for your party that begins at 10pm (who cares about neighbors??).

There is also a dearth of missing information in this book (except for the frequent flyer programs). At one point, they mention that some recent college grads can go work in places like London within six months after graduation, and they say you should look into it. BUT THEY DON'T NAME THE PROGRAM! Nor do they mention that this is a program only Canadians can participate in.

While the authors may think using drugs is trendy and acceptable, writing that snorting heroin is acceptable is utterly a grievous error of judgement. One of their questionaires deals with parties and each answer involves doing drugs, without an option to NOT. They give the impression that you will lose glam points if you don't at the very least go home and smoke a joint. I also felt the authors spent way too much time extolling the virtues of finding yourself with a drink in your hand as an evening or weekend activity. It was only when they showed options of when you are absolutely broke that they suggested going to a museum, poetry reading or some other non-liquor-based activity. Going to the theater was only an option if you were going on a date with someone richer and boring. Believe me, drinking all the time becomes boring regardless of where you do it or who you do it with.

The sections on wardrobe and housing are fairly helpful, and the authors do provide useful information on what is worth shelling out serious cash for, and what items are not worth owning. The stories they related of friends' adventures in creative living (such as the guy who continually house-sat and never paid for his own place) are interesting and provide inspiration to look beyond the obvious rental option.

Finally, this book gives no information on how to manage money. I wouldn't expect a book like this to provide lots of advice, but if you live in cheap apartments, work for a pittance and rack up $10K in credit card debt for clothes, what do they think will happen when you turn 30? This book is completely live-in-the-moment and doesn't offer any information on how to upgrade your indulgent life when you begin making more money.

This is a moderately entertaining book. But if you are really interested in a hip lifestyle book with sane and informative entertainment suggestions, read elsewhere. The useful information on clothing can be found by carefully reading magazines and the housing information can be found elsewhere.

Very informative for Star Trek fans.......2001-07-22

This is a pretty cool guide to Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. For each episode they list the stardate, any new planets, aliens and technology encountered, quotes, a plot summary, and many more tidbits. The only reason I gave it four stars is that after episode #52 of DS9, the entries have no detail and are abbreviated to just a few lines. It's as though they didn't have time to finish it!

There are also a few interesting pages at the back that explain how Star Trek is a metaphor for the American way of life.

Overall: If you watch Star Trek TNG and DS9 a lot, you will defintely not regret buying this book.

This is a very informational book for all Star trek NG Fans. It contains a synopsis of each episode. All though a few of the Episodes are a bit out of order, the book is a great guide, espicially if you own the entire series. The only enhancement I would make is an author's rating of each episode.

Lacking.......2006-02-07

Let me first say I really like Zenworks and have since 1.0. What I don't like is a large book that just covers the basics as found in the help files. I was looking to this book to cover, in depth, details about Imaging and the Middle Tier server. While there are details covering Imaging, I don't see any additional information above and beyond the on-line documentation and the help files. As far as the Middle Tier server - don't bother. The authors didn't. There is a section on installing the server telling the user how to fill in the DNS name and such but no real substance. And that's it! There is NO section on how to use the Middle Tier services or why one would want to. All in all, if you want a book for your shelf, buy this one. If you want a book you can use - keep looking.

Covers Everything.......2005-01-16

ZENworks (ZEN = Zero Effort Networks) Suite is a set of programs named to reflect the zero effort required by end users and the minimal effort necessary for administrators to manage the desktops on their systems. Since so little effort is required, it almost makes you wonder just why it takes a book of almost eleven hundred pages.

The answer is that the suite of products has become so complete and all encompassing that a large number of individual programs within the suite handle virtually all networking tasks. The suite covers three general classes of hardware: workstations, servers, and handheld devices, and the applications include not only networking but also software distribution and extensive network troubleshooting.

The size of the book is determined by the sheer amount of software included in this new suite. Each program, each function is described in detail as to function, what it is trying to do, and how to interpret the results.
