AWESOME READ.......2007-07-28
This book is awesome. You are hooked to the main character of Andrew from the first page. This book is so well written. I could not stopped reading it. By the end of the book I wanted to know where the characters were and how they were. I love these books that you grow with the character and you are almost yelling at the book when the characters do something stupid.
Romance, Humor, Tears, and Hope this book has it all. I hope the author revisits these characters again sometime. I recommend this for a great entertaining read.
Some wonderful Laugh of Loud moments- I did!.......2007-04-30
A VERY nice openning, with some wonderful images and some great wit.
This is the story of a man blinded by rose colored glasses, a romantic who in a relationship is soo happy that he doesn't notice his lover isn't and is getting ready to leave him. Andrew is devastated, with some rye humor including a lol moment while he drowns his califlower in gravy and holds it down while imaging his ex's new lover! Well, Andrew's not a fast learner so the next guy his eyes meet turns out to be a prince of a different kind. But despite the wise-guys, homocidual ex-finances, danger to life and limb and his friends desperate attempts to help him and themselves Andrew refuses to give up his Love with confused, son-of-the-mafia Frank.
I liked it, but you expect a main character to learn and grow. Andrew doesn't seem to. He goes in to his romantic Love and it's little different, accept the for danger for bodily harm or death at the hands of Frank's Family connections, then his "example" relationship with the ex that left him. You can only say that his rose-glasses Love gave him the courage and determination to stay until he got Frank, and then to stick around despite all common sense and actually end up WITH Frank. And safe.
I really loved the beginning. Got tired as I continued to read to the end all in one night (I read it all in one night people, there's something to this book!)- so perhaps I'm a bit jaded on the ending, but I still feel there was no character growth.
Some great characters, like mystery writter Maragret and FBI Paul Waverly and like I said a wonderful openning. Things just went slightly down hill when Frank does the typical Mafia thing and has Andrew's ex beaten- bad. That kind of killed the comedy there and alot of the rye life humor as well as those rose-colored glasses blinded Andrew to his own life. He spends most of the story from that moment desperately trying to bag his man, despite his flaws, Frank needed him! And Frank WAS sweet.
Reading it I would occassionally imagine it as a movie, or even as a yaoi manga.
Read it- you decide!
Madness and the Mafia, plus HIGH, HIGH CAMP !!.......2005-06-03
What a totally fun book !!! THE NIGHT WE MET is the story of a 30-something editorial assistant - budding author, Andrew, who, through a being forced by his employer to "do drag" (looking like Demi Moore), finds himself in love with a Mafia baby, Frank, who doesn't know he, Frank, is gay. Adding to the mix is Ted; Andrew's EX, and Ted's new twink boyfriend "Nicky"; Denise and David, two of Andrew's friends; a host of Mafia thugs and bigwigs; a Mafia Diva; a formidable mystery writer; as well as some "gum-shoes"; and the FBI. Madness and mayhem ensue in this fast paced, romantic farce. The story is so convoluted and madcap that it reminds one of some of the early Cary Grant comedies of the 1930's. This is a fast-paced easy read, and is, in the words of Andrew's literary critics "fluff". FLUFF is NOT A BAD THING, in fact, it makes for many laughs, a few moments of poignancy, and a genuinely entertaining experience. I loved it!!
Most heartwarming book i have ever read........2004-04-14
i recently bought this book and i must say it really is worth it.i laughed and cried as i read through but the ending is the most best part.i highly recommend anyone to buy this book.
My favorite gay novel of summer 2003.......2003-11-30
Fast moving, entertaining, light, with a great crossover of the coming-out, godfather, and gay-travel genres.
Book Description
I wasn't supposed to love Nate Grady, let alone marry him. But we found a love that triumphed over all adversity
just like Jane Eyre, my very favorite heroine.
I was young, bookish, naive
on the verge of entering the conventand then I met him
. The day I abandoned my old life, the day I agreed to marry him, now seems an eternity ago. But despite everyone's objections, I fell for Nate. An older, previously married man. My first and only love. My husband.
When I looked into Nate's eyes on our wedding day, the rest of the world vanished. If I was crazy for doing this, I prayed the craziness would last forever

The Night We Met: a romance choice and calling from the heart.......2007-07-29
The Night We Met is an innovative romance with a few shockers to those expecting a classic romance that adheres to prescribed genre conventions but will appeal to those wanting something unusual in their romance reads. Tara Taylor Quinn creates an emotional read that follows a marriage from the first moment a couple meets through til the end. In 1968 at the tender age of 19 years old, Eliza Crowley is two weeks away from becoming a postulant at St. Catherine's Convent when she enters a San Francisco bar to have a beer and ease her tension. She meets a much older man, Nate Grady. With little more than a conversation and a letter, Eliza agrees to marry Nate. In the beginning of their life together, Nate is the perfect man who touches her heart in all the right ways and creates a safe world. Then the unthinkable happens. Eliza no longer feels safe. Can their marriage survive loss, uncovered secrets and betrayal?
Stylistically, the author prefaces the stages of Eliza's life and marriage with descriptions of the arts (mostly music) and news of the year. Often these prefaces reflect the themes of safety and hope as well as moments that threaten one's sense of safety. The author develops this theme as it plays out in Eliza's heart and life.
Eliza is an intriguing heroine who chooses to be led by her heart. She is bad girl in the eyes of her church and family because she left her religious calling to marry a man --- a man who had been previously divorced. Since she is Catholic, creating a family with this man means not being able to take communion, one of the key sacraments, which cuts her off from her religious community. Eliza and and Nate's romance is not the typical we expect but rather a story of two flawed people who make bad choices andstruggle to keep love and marriage together. Some readers expecting a typical romance may not warm to the hero and heroine because of the betrayal. Eliza does the unthinkable and unforgivable in terms of romance genre conventions when she is betrayed.
Although The Night We Met includes a few genre shockers, Tara Taylor Quinn, however, prepares the reader through her characterization of Eliza. Eliza understands a calling from God as emerging from the heart and she looks to her heart for steadfastness and choices. Her heart is not a wavering bundle of emotions but a principle that guides her. Some readers may not enjoy this book if they want to read a romance that adheres to rigid genre conventions but others may welcome an innovative romance guided by the heart and true to the character. Whether or not I would make the same choices that Eliza does seems irrelevant to me when the author so clearly shows the reader Eliza's character --- and why she makes her choices as well as how those choices make her heart grow beyond needing absolute safety. Tara Taylor Quinn provides perhaps the best ending to a marriage romance but one that will provoke tears in many readers.
Once Eliza chooses to marry instead of join the convent, the reader hears very little about any conflict, sorrow, or even nostalgia for the religious traditions and life she has left. From almost taking monastic vows to being excommunicated from her loved community is quite a large jump, even if motivated by love. Although this absence may bolster the rightness of her choice, some space given to this issue might have rendered her a more multi-faceted character for readers.
boring and uninspiring.......2007-06-03
while i understand the underlying concept of the everlasting love series--i think harlequin may be missing its mark. the stories are designed to tell the "happily ever after" part of a relationship--how two people madly in love live their lives together. i'm not opposed to these long-term love stories (after all, my favorite book is the Thornbirds) but they've got to have GREAT stories. These books often lack for interesting stories, and they often end with the death of a character who has aged. and none of them feel like "epic love stories."
i turn to books like this to escape and read about things that would never happen to me...so this book was a chore. first, it's written in the first person, which always drives me a little crazy. the main character is boring and uninteresting and, worst, weak (the hero (who already has an illegitimate child) cheats on her midway through the book and she doesn't end the relationship). There's little to say about the hero--because the book is written in the first person, you rarely get a glimpse into his personality.
reading it, i felt like i was spying on my grandparents normal, everyday life. the intimacy feels weird and uncomfortable, and the last scene didn't sadden me as much as it kind of grossed me out. the book is filled with inane thoughts about the PTA and kids going to college, which are bad enough in real life...who want's to read about them too?
interesting relationship drama .......2007-04-10
In 1968 San Francisco Nineteen years old Eliza Crowley plans to enter St. Catherine's Convent where in six months if God is willing she will become a novice. Eliza stops at a pub across the street from the convent where she meets much older Nathaniel Grady. She is stunned by her attraction to the twice divorced ski resort manager because no man has ever hooked her before. Still she knows she is no longer suited for a convent life as her heart belongs to Nathaniel. He feels the same way about her though he feels he is robbing the cradle. They marry.
Over the years they remain married and raise children who give them grandchildren. Their relationship remains strong through their time together has dented some of the luster. Still Nate and Eliza are an entry although the ardor has cooled over the years somewhat.
THE NIGHT WE MET is the first event of many years together for Eliza and Nate. However, Eliza is the only fully developed character as each escapade unfolds it is from her point of view. Thus the audience sees Nate and their offspring through her filter. In some ways more of a series of vignettes than a saga, this is an interesting relationship drama of a couple through the decades.

A unique love story.......2007-04-10
THE NIGHT WE MET by Tara Taylor Quinn
April 9, 2007
Rating **** (4 Stars)
THE NIGHT WE MET is the story of a couple, Nate Grady and Eliza Crowley, and the love they shared from the day they met. At the time, she was studying to enter the convent at the age of 19, and he was already twice divorced and in his 30's. They could have been an ill-fated couple, but because of chances and circumstances, the two meet in a bar, a very unlikely place, and eventually marry. What makes this book special is that this is the fictionalized story of Tara Taylor Quinn's parents. Like her own parents, Eliza was disowned by her family because she chose to forsake her vows to enter a life with God, to marry a man that had been married and divorced twice. This caused great unhappiness with her parents, and for quite some time, her family would not have anything to do with her. But Eliza's heart told her to follow this path. For some reason, she could not walk away from Nate, a man she had just met in a bar. But after talking to him all night, she felt a connection to him and she fell in love.
Readers will enjoy the unusual love story that is told in THE NIGHT WE MET. They will share Eliza and Nate's triumphs and heartaches as they experience the birth and death of their children, infidelities, and other events that will threaten to tear their marriage apart. Eliza often wonders what would have happened if she had chosen not to follow through with Nate's wish to see her again all those years ago. But she also knows deep in her heart that she had made the right decision, that she was able to give her life to God in a different capacity, as a married woman, a wife and mother.
What this reviewer is finding with these EVERLASTING LOVE books is that often the stories themselves are anticlimactic. But once the reader has come to that last page, that reader will often feel a satisfaction from reading a great love story that spanned decades. In THE NIGHT WE MET, there are plenty of bumps in the road.
The EVERLASTING LOVE books are not traditional romances and often times they end with a death. As with nearly all the books this reviewer has read in this series, this one will have the reader grabbing for the tissue box. THE NIGHT WE MET is recommended. - Courtesy of Love Romances and More.

Remember the Beginning.......2006-10-20
For The Night We Met anthology, Pamela Morsi, along with two other authors, Colleen Collins and Karen Kendall, has written a story with the theme of remembering the moment when you meet the person that will change your life forever. Three couples celebrate this moment by going on a 3-day cruise in Bangkok.
THE PANTY RAID is the story written by Pamela Morsi and is about Dorothy Wilbur and Hank Brantly, both attending college in 1956.
Dot loves science and wants to use her knowledge after she graduates college. However, everyone, from her father to her professors think that she's only biding her time until she gets married.
Hank falls in love at first sight with Dot even if that first sight is drenched by a bucket of cold water. He is older than the other students as he served in the military. All his life, he's known what he wants to be - "a man". His dad died in World War II and he saw his mother work at various jobs trying to support her family until she met a man and remarried. When Hank meets Dot, he begins to understand what his mother must have gone through.
The story is well told and puts the reader in the time period of the 50's where she can feel the frustration that Dot feels. Even the Dean of Women at the school, who is female, informs Dot that a woman cannot have both a career and a family. Dot is determined to prove everyone wrong until she meets Hank. And she wonders, is everybody right?
As Dot and Hank get to know each other and as they attend a seasonal ball sponsored by the men in a nearby dorm, the reader keeps asking if the hero and heroine will be able to work out their personal conflicts to reach their happily-ever-after ending.
Check out Morsi's story, THE PANTY RAID, as well as the other two stories in the anthology, and remember the time you fell in love with your hero.
fun look back.......2006-10-09
"The Panty Reid" by Pamela Morsi. In the 1950s, high school and college staff discouraged girls from studying advanced science curriculum. Dot knows that first hand, but loves science and is taking organic chemistry in spite of the scorn. During a panty raid fellow student Hank joins his male peers on lingerie larceny, but is caught by campus police. Attracted to one another, Hank wants the real Dorothy while Dot wonders if the man she loves means costing her dream of becoming a scientist.
"Frame by Frame" by Karen Kendall. World Sophisticate Travel and Lifestyle Magazine Editor Addison warns super talented photographer Pete that he must stop terrorizing those involved with his on site shoots; to keep him in line she sends her assistant Natalie. To his shock, he is attracted to his "guard" while she reciprocates as the big bad wolf's bite is tender.
"Three Wishes" by Colleen Collins. In 1971 San Francisco Chronicle junior reporter Christie is undercover working on an assignment on how it feels to be an antiwar activist. At the military recruiting station, she tries to get military recruits to sign her petition. Air Force Captain Mac demands she leave, but she refuses so he has arrested, but not before he kisses her. That night he bails her out so that she can spend Thanksgiving with loved ones, which turns out to be him.
The three couples are on a tour in Thailand when they exchange the tales of their first meeting with their life mate. The authors provide solid contributions, but especially fascinating are the feels for the 1950s and 1971 as we've come a long way baby.

Book Description
In Reform or Revolution? independent researcher Dan La Botz gives us a personal look at the Indonesian workers who are taking on global corporate giants and igniting a multinational labor solidarity movement.
Through rare personal interviews with Indonesian workers, La Botz describes the inspiring, powerful events that are transforming the world's fourth-largest country. He shows us how workers earning the equivalent of $2 a day are challenging the sweatshop conditions of factories run by U.S.-based multinationals such as Nike and Reebok. Their dynamic new labor movement emerged in Indonesia in the 1990s, helping to bring down the brutal dictatorship of the U.S.-backed General Suharto in May 1998.
When Indonesian workers toured U.S. campuses and trade union halls in 1999 and 2000, a new generation of student activists in the United States was awakened. Reform or Revolution? will be required reading for those activists and for all those interested in building international labor solidarity.
Dan La Botz is a researcher and organizer with Global Exchange and currently lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of Mask of Democracy and Democracy in Mexico, both published by South End Press, and Rank-and-File Rebellion. La Botz is the editor of Mexican Labor News and Analysis. His writing appears regularly in Against the Current, Labor Notes, and Z Magazine. He has traveled to Indonesia several times to report on the Indonesian labor movement.

Customer Reviews:
Background Information.......2004-08-10
I am a sort of contributor to this book- three of my essays were excerpted for use as examples. (two were improperly credited in my review copy, but that is of no real concern here) I will confirm that they were written as class assignments for a community college course titled "Film As Literature." I'll make no claim that they are superlative examples of analysis, but they were FAR better than the average.
Dr. Moscowitz was not in fact the instructor of the class when I took it, but he apparently took over when that person retired- and inherited a body of past work accumulated over time. He contacted me a few years after I had moved on for permission to use my work.
The class, as part of the state's college curriculum, was meant primarily as an exercise in writing. It was not meant as any great in-depth study of film as an art form. It was not meant for film-school students in serious study of film.
This is meant as background information- you'll still have to make your own decision about how appropriate the book itself is to your situation.
Dr Moscowitz's continues to amaze.......2004-08-09
Sure, if you want a manufactured, canned review of film and movie creation, then turn away and buy an Ebert book. But if you want an independent review of film by a PhD, then this is your book. Dr. Moscowitz's introduction to film in this book is wonderful. This book covers all facets of film from the review to the documented research paper. An excellent addition to any film class or general reader's library.
Poorly executed guide to writing critical film reviews........2001-07-10
John Moscowitz poorly executes a mini-textbook on how to write critical film reviews. He takes a series of student papers (presumably from his own classes) and presents them with repetitive commentary echoing what the writer has just said.
A better idea would be to read an actual book of reviews by a single author such as the Roger Ebert ones or any of a number of other critics.
Extremely thorough..........2000-01-11
This volume is an extremely thorough work on the process of film criticism, detailing techniques for accumulating information and thinking about the material, approaches to film criticism, types of it, and so on. Glossary and various appendices are included -- it's even got a quiz at the end. This is a wonderful book for budding film critics.

Book Description
Although sports broadcasting has never been more popular with the fans, the advent of cable TV and the proliferation of televised sporting events has greatly eroded each network's share of revenue in this billion-dollar industry. This decline in profits has hit the networks hard. Indeed, with
the bottom-line mentality that currently rules the major networks, it may well be that by the year 2000 most major sports will be available only on cable TV. In the end, it is the fan who will pay the bill.
In this colorful, fact-filled account of televised sports, David Klatell and Norman Marcus explore this and numerous other connections between sports, television, money, and the fans, covering the emergence of major cable sports networks, the dramatic growth of corporate marketing campaigns, and
the vast impact that TV has had on sports, both for good and ill. As the authors demonstrate, money is a major consideration, so much so that television executives will manipulate sporting events for the network's benefit--alpine skiing events, for example, have been taped and reedited so that the
winning skier went down the slope last, keeping the viewer around until the last commericial--and even manufacture events (including such "trash sports" as Battle of the Network Stars) to compete against real events signed by other networks. The authors provide an extensive chapter on the Olympics,
describing the bidding wars between the major networks, the behind-the-scenes logistics, and the technical brilliance of the broadcasts; they review the careers of major media figures such as Roone Arledge and Howard Cosell; and discuss the evolution of some of the more popular and innovative shows.
An eye-opening account of the impact of the bottom-line on sports, this vividly written book will delight sports fans and anyone curious about how television looks behind the scenes.

Designing Enterprise Applications with the J2EE Platform.......2007-03-08
i like this book, it is really good for a person who intersted to understand the back world of the technology
Not as useful as expected.......2002-12-29
This book would have been better if it had been written by people who had the ability to be a bit more objective about these technologies. (The authors work for Sun, of course.) There is a large portion of the book devoted to repeated explanations about why the J2EE platform is the best available. There are a number of plugs for client-side Java programs (applets, etc.), which is a marginal technology in practical terms, despite its theoretical advantages. I just wanted more objective information and less marketing hype. That being said, the book does have some useful information. A better and more dispassionate look at the J2EE platform spec is "Java for the Web with Servlets, JSP, and EJB" published by New Riders.
An overview of technologies and architectural models.......2002-05-15
The book is a high level overview of the application design with the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition. It may be helpful for someone who wants to know how different architectural choices and technologies fit together in an enterprise application.
It starts with an introduction to different enterprise application scenarios (Stand-Alone, Web-Centric, EJB-Centric, B2B, etc.), and then goes on discussing each of the architectural tiers in detail. In addition, in separate chapters it covers important issues like security, transaction management, internationalization, and localization.
As a rule, each chapter gives an overview of the involved technologies, considers most important issues, and provides some tips on design and proper usage. Available tools are also discussed. Each chapter is followed by a list of references and resources. Many resources have URLs.
The last chapter presents an architecture of the sample application. Unfortunately, quite a bit of space in this chapter is wasted reiterating general pros and cons of distributed and local architectures. My impression is that the author of this particular chapter (each chapter in the book is written by a different author or group of authors) assumes that the reader does not have any prior knowledge about the subject and have not read preceding chapters.
A few code samples in the entire book illustrate some points in the discussion; the code snippets are neither complete nor complex, and obviously are not written for reuse.
Essential read for designing J2EE applications.......2002-05-11
A must read for seasoned professionals and those new to the subject. Invaluable insights and guidelines are detailed at every tier of architecting a J2EE enterprise application. I found myself frequently relating to the examples and wishing I had read this book to help with earlier projects. This would have saved hours of re-factoring because the authors have already detailed solutions to common design problems.
If you are looking for code examples, don't look here. Code examples throughout the book are minimal; however this book is not about code examples, the purpose is to provide proven principles for architecting and developing J2EE applications. Instead, one chapter describes the design of the sample Java Pet Store application in regards to the books principles.
I now have a better understanding of the J2EE platform and how to apply its technologies. I will be referring back to this book often!
Informative, Comprehensive but not drilled-down.......2002-04-29
This book (2n Edition) is informative in the context of offering a comprehensive overview of various design concept involved in each tier of the J2EE application. If you are trying to envision what a J2EE platform can do for you, this is a good book to grab. While it provides some insight on design consideration, however, it defers the readers to seek for J2EE vendor implementation rather than offering a solution. Nevertheless, it does point out some advantage/disadvantage or the trade-off associated with choosing different implementation. It also provides some coverage on design patterns, framework (struts), security, transaction and state management using HttpSession or stateful EJB session bean. If you are involved in a J2EE project, this book will serve as a good reference for high-level design concept which puts together all J2EE related knowledge that you might have learned from elsewhere.
