If there's anyone qualified to write a self-help book on success, it's Jack Canfield, who's worked his way from scraping by as a teacher to holding a Guinness world record for having seven books simultaneously on The New York Times® Best Sellers list.
As a coauthor of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, he's sold more than 80 million books, and now lives "in a beautiful California estate" with his days of dining on spaghetti and tomato paste long behind him. "All you have to do is decide what it is you want, believe you deserve it, and practice the principles in this book," he says, and success is yours.
His advice is straightforward (examples: "reject rejection" and "surround yourself with successful people"), but rather derivative, with quotes from the likes of JFK, Colin Powell, Aldous Huxley, and fellow motivation author Napoleon Hill.Canfield's definition of success is primarily monetary, and he includes plenty of anecdotes depicting average folks who saved themselves from the brink of bankruptcy after following his principles. He could tone down the braggadocio; readers don't need to know that he's stayed in resorts in Hawaii, Italy, Australia, and Morocco. Despite those gripes, his cheerleader-caliber enthusiasm should benefit anyone looking to improve their lot in life. --Erica Jorgensen

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-10-19
This book is awesome. I wasn't expecting it to be this good and I haven't been able to put it down. I've read hundreds of these types of books and this one is definitely in my top 10. I bought a copy for a family member and it has changed her life.
Fantastic Book!.......2007-10-18
This book is just fantastic. It gives you the steps you need to take and the mindset to accomplish any goals in life.
I have already purchased 4 copies as gifts to friends and family!
A Landmark.......2007-10-11
This is the thickest self help book I ever read, 435 pages of content. However, it's a real page turner. I finished it within two days and learned a lot. I like the detailed breakdown (64 principles/chapters), the good stories and quotes supporting each principle, and the excellent writing skill of the author. It's no exaggeration to describe this as the shortcut/summary/spirit of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" series. I had read over 50 self help books and I seldom rate one five star. But this book and the book Understanding: Train of Thought, are the only two that deserve it.
Apply Jack's Principles to Your Presentations.......2007-10-08
Jack emphasizes the point that the human brain only understands pictures and positive statements. I was excited to read this because that is what I coach my clients to do--create pictures of what you want your audiences to do and get away from dry statistics and graphs and tables on slide after slide. When you generate a visual in the minds of your audiences, they will remember you and your message. And that will go a long way towards achieveing the success you are reading this book for.
Are you ready to change your life?.......2007-10-05
Then get this book. This book is a big book, and worth the read. In my opinion, it's the bible for success. I believe in it so much, I now follow Jack's format to coach my clients because it's logical and concise. If you want success in your personal growth, then read the book, and after you have finished, reread it. Good luck in your journey!

Excellent materials.......2003-08-31
_America's Working Women_ is a magnificient and thorough anthology of the female experience in America. I was particularly impressed and pleased that not just European - American women were included, but also Native Americans, immigrants (just off the boat from where-ever), Asian - Americans, African - Americans, Hispanic - Americans ... it is very comprehensive in this regard.
Baxandall also covers a wide variety of issues within women working - from colonial indentured servitude, to women in the early industrial revolution, to the rather significant part women played in the creation of labor unions (including an piece on sexism in the work place in the 1970's).
As a history teacher, I am frequently frustrated at the relative lack of materials that have the authentic voice of women in history. _America's Working Women_ provides that voice (at long last). While I would imagine the book would be a bit dry for most to read cover to cover, it nonetheless has some remarkable documents detailing the struggle women have had for their place alongside men - first in the work place, and now (finally!) in the history books.
Every woman should have a copy.......1998-09-17
"America's Working Women" should be on a shelf in every woman's home. I am so impressed by the way Baxandall and Gordon use personal stories and wonderful narrative to illustrate the history of women in the labor force.
Growing up in Salt Lake City, Utah I have been constantly bombarded with the myth that my place was in the home and that it wasn't my responsibility to have a career. I was encouraged to abandon my career and take on "traditional" female roles. Deep down I knew otherwise, but I didn't have any evidence to support what I believed.
"America's Working Women" dispels the myths and imbues the soul with strength. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Book Description
Interviews with dating coaches, psychologists, and therapists yielded terrific real-life advice and perspective for this upbeat new guide for the twentysomething woman. By turns humorous, touching, and empowering, this fun Miniature Edition(tm) of THE GO-GIRL GUIDE may just be the best friend a young woman facing life on her own could have.
Customer Reviews:
Go Girl Guide.......2007-03-15
I was expecting it to be a regular sized book, but it's a miniature.
Merely ok.......2005-12-02
I thought this book could have been much better. The chapters on dating and jobs are helpful. However, I just can't seem to get past the chapters on body image...To me it felt like the author was trying to say, "your gonna get fatter as you get older so you can better accept it now. You'll be even more fatter if you have children, so the sooner you accept this the better" Excuse me, but this is supposed to make me feel better about my body?
Maybe it would come across better if she said something along the lines of "You may find your metabolism slowing down, but thats nothing a little exercise and eating right can't fix".
I am almost willing to put money on the fact that the author is overweight cause this comes through very much in her writing.
That alone just made the book a rotten deal for me.
Some parts of the book rang true for me, like examples of how your mind changes as you age. But i really don't think there is much advice worth paying for.
Yes, but..........2005-07-24
Why is it that every book written for women devotes half its pages to men?
Other than this, it is a truly funny and honest book offering refreshing honesty in delicate areas and good advice in professional ones. Written in just a bit too much of the mega-drama!-and-oh-my-hysterical-crises style.
Cold Advice.......2005-06-16
I actually threw this book out after reading it, which is rare for me. I just thought a lot of the advice, such as how to handle old friends and family, seemed a bit cold-hearted. I understand that a person has to look out for herself, but a lot of the advice in this book seemed quite selfish. I would not recommend wasting your time with this book and figure out what's best for you on your own.
Sandy Vong.......2005-05-25
I really like this book. I read this book more than 3 times and each time I read it, I get something different out of it. My first time reading this book, I thought there is just a lot of common senses. Then I read it again when I moved out and discover more to this book, whenever I get lost, this book reminds me that it is all about life's ups and downs. I can't wait for her next book to come out.
Customer Reviews:
Mostly pictures.......2004-05-15
I bought this book thinking it was going to be a biography on Stevie. When I got it I found it to be a thin book with about 90% pictures. The man talked a bit about how he tried to get her to authorize it in the beginning. Then it was all black and white picutes. A few are kinda nice but most are just from a concert taken and they aren't real nice depictions of her. Toward the end he blabbers on about some other artists. Some Tori Amos lady and some other people. I can learn more about Stevie from reading articles free off the internet. I think it was a waste of money (...) on some black and white pictues that I could find better ones free off the internet. Don't waste your money on this book. It teaches you nothing about Stevie. I wish someone would just write a book about her. Like mabye Stevie should do one. She's supposed to but it says it was never published. The moral: don't bother. (...) I could have gotton that Street Angel cd I need!
Yawn.............2002-11-20
....poorly written re-hash of "Rock's Mystical Lady". This book was so unnecessary!!! If you are a Stevie Nicks fan, you could do your own research on the web and get more information yourself! Don't bother reading this book. As for the pictures....they are all black and white...not that great...some are interesting. If Wincentsten was aiming to do a photo book on Stevie, he should have marketed it as such and gone all out with color photos, ect. He should definitely give up trying to "write" about her. This is info my 10 yr old sister could find online.
A Glimpse into Stevie's World.......2002-11-04
Being a huge Stevie Nicks fan there hasnt been a lot of books out there that are written about her life. I was thrilled that this book actually existed. Even though this book isn't a real authentic biography of her life, it still allows the reader to take a glimpse into the world she created for her music and her fans. There are great black and white photo's of her inside the book and there unique drawings of her in the book as well.
Hope that another Stevie books comes out soon....until then this one will do.
A cute, fluffy Stevie Nicks book.......2002-04-11
This is simply a "fluffy" Stevie Nicks picture book, full of cute pictures of her I'd never seen before. That's really all the value this book has. If you know that and don't expect anything else, grab it! I've already got a bunch of Fleetwood Mac books. I figure a cute little book full of Stevie Pictures isn't going to hurt. The art by Johanna Pieterman (she does wonderful drawings) is another reason I got this book. I love Johanna's work.
A very poor book.......2001-12-22
This book is a great disappointment.
The only information within this book are various newspaper and magazine articles that the author mentions. Anyone, I think, could have written this book. All he did was quote several PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN articles and give his own opinions. Over half the book consists of photos of Stevie (most of which are NOT very good at all). There is even full section of the book about OTHER artists that he seems to think are similar to Stevie. Very far off, IMO.
Also, the book is written very poorly. Simply read the excpert Amazon provides and see what I mean. In reading this, you will also notice that the author flat out tells you that Stevie, her management, even her parents, all stated (on numerous occasions) that they wanted nothing to do with the making of this book.
Kinda pathetic, I think.
Book Description
A man turning 50 was asked if he really felt middle-aged. "I don't feel middle-aged," he replied. "I feel like a teenager who's been in a fight."
That funny, chin-up, defiant declaration captures Bob Greene's own feelings about life at the big five-oh, and sets the tone for this wonderful new book of reflections on family, career, money, sex, mortality, friendship, regrets, memories, doctors, rivals, yearnings, sleep, lust, embarrassments, and horizons. The 50-Year Dash touches on everything that's part of life at fifty: looking at aches and pains as a growth industry, and seeing the constant onslaught of new pain relievers as a modern version of the British invasion of rock groups in the 1960s; finding that the world is no longer sufficiently quiet, and that you're the one yelling "Turn that down!"; realizing you're older than James Bond ever was; hearing yourself say, "The fruit plate looks good," and meaning it; understanding that the one thing which seems to be going away from you the fastest is that first-time feeling--first job, first house, first kiss--and knowing that the best thing you can do for yourself is try to keep finding that feeling again and again.
Between now and the year 2014, 77 million American men and women will turn 50, entering a strange land that once seemed so far away. The 50-Year Dash is a whimsical, wise, funny, bittersweet, evocative, nostalgic book to take along on the journey.
Bob Greene's national bestsellers include Be True to Your School; Hang Time: Days and Dreams with Michael Jordan; Good Morning, Merry Sunshine; and, with his sister, D.G. Fulford, To Our Children's Children: Preserving Family Histories for Generations to Come. Greene is a syndicated columnist for the Chicago Tribune; his column appears in more than two hundred newspapers in the United States, Canada, and Japan. For nine years his "American Beat" was the lead column in Esquire magazine; and as a broadcast journalist he has served as contributing correspondent for ABC News Nightline. The 50-Year Dash is his sixteenth book. His next--Chevrolet Summers, Dairy Queen Nights--will be published in the fall of 1997.
Customer Reviews:
I have to be honest . . . I didn't get a chance to read the whole book . . . .......2007-03-09
Before I sent it to a friend with a rapidly approaching 50th birthday.
But what I did read was exactly what I would expect from Bob Greene -- a variety of well-written, high-quality, witty stories that will be interesting to a broad segment of those approaching their 50th birthday!
A really terrific book, well worth sending to those we love and reading ourselves.
The Fifty-Year Dash.......2005-07-07
As usual, Greene lived up to his previous books with knowledge and humor. The book was receives in good condition and in a timely manner.
Straight Talking.......2003-03-07
I found this book's language to be straightforward and from the heart. It's easy reading, sort of like sitting on a couch with the author and simply sharing perceptions. Greene covers everything; he describes fleeting thoughts on the seemingly insignifigant and expands into the depths of intensity. The reader sometimes feels as if he is having a conversation with an old schoolmate. Perfect for anyone who is either approaching their mid life years or already in the midst of them.
On target!.......1999-07-05
I'm not quite there myself, but having been a Bob Greene fan since 1976's JOHNNY DEADLINE, REPORTER, I felt that I had to buy and read this one in advance of my milestone birthday. As usual, Greene is right on target with his observations.
Introspection is something that many of us avoid, but Greene is right there nudging us to take a look at our innermost feelings and reactions to a variety of different situations. At 47, I've already experienced a good many of them, and I'm grateful to find out in advance about those that may be forthcoming. As usual, Greene's writing style is like a welcome long-distance call from your oldest and best friend--you hang on every word, you anticipate the outcome of a story, and you relish each other's happiness in describing the events of everyday life.
Greene is the heartbeat of us all.
This is the book our parents' generation should have written.......1998-10-27
Bob Greene combines very special abilities: great talent to experience and observe; great talent to convey this acquired information.
This book compares the changes in our bodies when we reach age fifty (mas o menos) with what we felt when we were younger.
The cast of characters is familiar to those who read "Be True to Your School" (an expanded version of his diary in his junior/senior years of high school), and many of his columns through the years. Quite a few of his observations in this book were touched upon in earlier writings, but "Fifty Year Dash" allows him to condense these ideas into one book and be more expansive in his descriptions.
This is a wonderful book, and one which I plan to give as gifts this Christmas.

Quite funny, if not for uber-fanboys.......2007-07-27
You need to know the series fairly well to get some of the jokes, and the humor and many references are decidedly British, but I had a lot of fun with this book.
Some folk who take Star Trek a mite too seriously take offense to this book, so if you have no stomach for a) irreverence and b) the Brits, you might not enjoy this.
Otherwise, I found it a gentle jab at the "revered science fiction cash cow" we've come to love (until Voyager).
If only Star Trek Had this much humor..........2005-08-21
I am a trekkie/er in my own right, and I seriously disagree with anything bad that has been said about this book. This is a fantastic romp through the trek universe with a whole bunch of brits willing to make fun of themselves and others for something they like a whole hell of a lot. The stories of how things were cancelled and naysayed and how people act about star trek in general are spoofed wonderfully here. All of you who didn't find it funny, surely don't have a sense of humor about yourselves and the show and should lighten up. But if you like to laugh, or get a good chuckle from turning a phrase, this is a fun book. enjoy it!
waste of money.......2005-07-02
The only thing I agree with is the title, this book is a completely useless piece of ****!! all the parodies and jokes made no sense to me, thank god I didn't buy it instead borrowed it from a friend and he too says it was a complete waste of time and money..
May be Hazardous To Your Health.......2000-11-22
If you are a Star Trek fan, you will either love this book, or hate it. This should be obvious from the reviews already posted, which seem to almost invariably give the book either 1 or 5 stars. The reason for this is that the book is hilariously funny, but has a wickedly mean sense of humor. Therefor, if you take your fandom very seriously, DO NOT READ THIS, as it will cause irreparable psychological dammage! If, on the other hand, you are able to laugh at Trek as well as your own geekdom, then by all means DO READ IT! But procede with caution, as you may find yourself incapacitated with laughter.
Simply the Best.......2000-11-15
This is the best Star Trek book ever. Do not buy if you are a sad person with no sense of humor.
