Book Description
As long as there have been vampires, there has been the Slayer. One girl in all the world, to find them where they gather and to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their numbers.
From the first vampire staking to the last glimpse of Sunnydale, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a genre-busting hit, attracting millions of fans worldwide. The last three seasons ran the gamut from an episode without music to a musical episode, from the arrival of a teenage sister to the death of Buffy (again).
Now the third volume in this best-selling series of companions will break down every episode of seasons five, six, and seven -- from the villains and the victims to quotables and love bytes -- as well as take a wide-ranging look back at the entire run of the show.
Additional features:
Flashback Foreshadowing: A line-by-line deconstruction of the portents in the season four finale, "Restless"
"Lost" lines of dialogue, stage directions, and descriptions cut from the original teleplays
The Trio's Pop-Culture Explosion: Mastering the references of Geek Speak
Critical (and not-so) essays from a variety of contributors on topics from Buffy's romantic optimism to Dawn's unfulfilled potential
Seven years, 144 episodes, 3 Slayers, 3 principals, 2 networks, 2 vampires with souls, 2 Watchers, 2 pigs, 1 Master, 1 Mayor, and 1 hit show (with tons of Potentials): It all adds up to one must-have volume!

excellent condition.......2007-04-11
The book itself was just like new. No dents or creases on the pages.
Awesome!!.......2007-01-12
I am a HUGE Buffy fan and this will make an awesome addition to my collection. Great condition and quick shipping! Thanks!
A great reference.......2006-11-05
Especially if you are writing about the series or something, and you want to know exactly when something happened or a reminder of some series of events, it really helps not to have to watch the whole season again. The essays were mediocre, but as a reference book - I'll probably have to order the other two too!
a must have!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-04
I must admit, I was never a Buffy fan until recently ( through syndication). So, I needed a quick reference to catch me up to speed as well as a episode guide/timeline to explain the ones I missed.
I have to say, I was very pleased! It contained an episode
guide for seasons 5-7 , quotes, and other little extras. Although it does not have alot of behind the scenes interviews as the previous two, it was still well worth the cash. I was very happy with it!
And if you'd consider taking advice from a newbie, choose this over the unoffical editions!
Good Buy.......2005-09-15
I love this product. It condition was great and it got here faster then i thought

I love this book!.......2001-05-19
I bought this book almost 15 years, when I was in elementary school and I have just loved it. I'm now a grown up (kind of) and I love it just as much now as I did then. I keep it on my desk in my office. Handy, for those slimy people who need to be told things like, "You're such a blockhead, you should have termite insurance for your brain." or "They say your baby brother looked like you. Then they turned him right side up."
WARNING---BAD BOOK!.......2000-03-27
This book is not funny at all. Its full of boring one-liners that were written in the 80s, with kiddie illustrations drawn in the 70s. Stay clear of this awful book.

Laugh 'Til You Cry.......2002-06-29
This book is hilarious. It was written for kids, but its funny to me as an adult. Some of the oldest sayings are in this book. One that I don't think a kid would get is: "I never forget a face. In your case, that would be two of them." You could say that as an insult to someone that is bugging you, or for someone that just shot you a low blow.
First-Class Funnies & Loin Pullers.......1999-12-23
I first got this book as a child, yet I still giggle my way through the end. The illustrations are stellar and the characters sassy. Rosenbloom gives them life by his wit and cheese-packed charm. This bugger is a superficial laugh for all ages; it sparks off a quick fix of brain neurons and widens the grin.

Did these help development?.......2004-06-29
At the core of the success of several Asian countries has been an intensive investment in public education. This book discusses to what extent a much touted "Asian values" approach was responsible for the development of the countries.
Various issues are raised. Like, are there really "Asian" values? Or are these part of a more general set of human rights? Are Asian values partly due to a Confucian, Taoist or Buddhist background? One author, Glazer, uses this to offer an updated critique of Max Weber's famous analysis, well nigh a century ago, that attributed some of Europe's rise to it being imbued with a Protestant ethos. Ironically, at that time, some Europeans condemned Asian backwardness as being in part due to the Asian religions.
Other authors also discuss how public education has been used to inculcate a national set of values to new generations. A very familiar argument to those used in the US for its public education.

Book Description
In this witty and candid perspective on American television, the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Howard Rosenberg traces a disturbing pattern: TV's relentless pursuit of the mundane in its seeming quest to dumb-down America. And, he writes, it may be succeeding. The longer mediocrity endures, Mr. Rosenberg advises, the greater the chance we will become permanently desensitized to it--and seduced by it--making third-rate the standard.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent treatment of a disturbing subject...TV.......2004-09-30
I agree with everything Mr. Squires states in his review--thanks, Harry. I had the privilege of attending Mr. Rosenberg's book signing last night, and of hearing him speak about the impact of 24-hour cable news, the blurring of opinion and news, and how the proliferation of reality shows (and therefore, the necessity for him to review them) was a factor in his retiring from the L.A. Times. (He is now a professor of journalistic ethics at the University of Southern California.) Having read his columns for all 25 years they appeared in the Times, I feel that a terrible void now exists in the area of TV criticism. Mr. Rosenberg is not coy, mean, or disingenuous in his writing: his style and content are absolutely crisp, thoughtful, intelligent, and right on the mark. As far as I'm concerned, he can write many more books like this one: please, Howard, mine your columns (all my clippings are faded); and help us navigate through the minefield of current TV, too.
Humor and outrage in equal measure.......2004-09-15
Howard Rosenberg has been writing about television for thirty-three years, most of the time in his syndicated newspaper column for the Los Angeles Times. This collection of his essays (unfortunately for us, his last) shows his sharp wit and and infallible crap-detector working at top form.
He shows a wonderful sense of outrage at prying newspeople who want to air someone's private grief to sell more cars, or mutual funds, or whatever their sponsors are hawking. Likewise, he takes telvision news to task for its lynch mob mentality towards Richard Jewell the suspected (and later exonerated) Olympic Games bomber in Atlanta.
Through the years covered by the columns, he chronicles the sad decline of television news into mere sensationalism, where apparently only celebrities can make news and facts must never get in the way of ratings.
He has great fun puncturing TV's pretension too, as in when he records a that program no longer goes into "reruns." According to the networks, it has an "encore episode." He suggests the next level of hype should be "pre-seen" episodes.
Commenting on how shallow and staged the presidential debates are, he suggests the president of the United States often comes across merely as "America's Anchorman."
He retired just over a year ago and we are the poorer for it. Here is a collection of essays for people who like their martinis dry, their Op Ed columns slightly acidic, and their vision 20-20. We'll miss you, Howard
Book Description
Parallel algorithms Made Easy
The complexity of today's applications coupled with the widespread use of parallel computing has made the design and analysis of parallel algorithms topics of growing interest. This volume fills a need in the field for an introductory treatment of parallel algorithms-appropriate even at the undergraduate level, where no other textbooks on the subject exist. It features a systematic approach to the latest design techniques, providing analysis and implementation details for each parallel algorithm described in the book. Introduction to Parallel Algorithms covers foundations of parallel computing; parallel algorithms for trees and graphs; parallel algorithms for sorting, searching, and merging; and numerical algorithms. This remarkable book:
* Presents basic concepts in clear and simple terms
* Incorporates numerous examples to enhance students' understanding
* Shows how to develop parallel algorithms for all classical problems in computer science, mathematics, and engineering
* Employs extensive illustrations of new design techniques
* Discusses parallel algorithms in the context of PRAM model
* Includes end-of-chapter exercises and detailed references on parallel computing.
This book enables universities to offer parallel algorithm courses at the senior undergraduate level in computer science and engineering. It is also an invaluable text/reference for graduate students, scientists, and engineers in computer science, mathematics, and engineering.
Book Description
The second edition of this successful textbook provides an up-to-date introduction both to distributed algorithms and to the theory behind them. The clear presentation makes the book suitable for advanced undergraduate or graduate courses, while the coverage is sufficiently deep to make it useful for practicing engineers and researchers. The author concentrates on algorithms for the point-to-point message passing model and includes algorithms for the implementation of computer communication networks. Two new chapters on sense of direction and failure detectors are state of the art and will provide an entry to research in these still-developing topics.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the Best Book on Distributed Algorithms!.......2004-01-24
Gerard Tel's is easily the best compilation of distributed computing algorithms existing. First the contents:
I found its coverage to be excellent, broad yet deep coverage on network algorithms and protocols for communication, routing, deadlock-free packet switching, election, termination, global snapshot, sychronization, authenticating, self-stabilization, failure detection, wave, traversal, deadlock detection, fault tolerance, consensus, sense of direction and orientation, etc. It terms of breadth of coverage no existing book compares to this book. In particular it covers more recent areas like sense of direction and orientation and wave algorithms missed by its main competitor Nancy Lynch's Distributed Algorithms.
It uses very intuitive pseudocode and the algorthimic analysis and proofs are quite intuitive and easier to understand.
My complaints: The coverage in a few areas like consensus are not nearly as comprehensive as Nancy Lynch's. Also, Tel covers algorithms for asynchronous systems mostly and synchronous systems, but Nancy Lynch covers partially synchronous systems as well.
I recommend Gerard Tel's book which costs less and has a deeper and broader topic coverage. For balance you need both books if you can afford them (and indeed Vijay Garg's Elemenets of Distributed Computing as well). Vijay Garg's new book - Concurrent and Distributed Computing in Java would be the best for you if your focus is distributed software development as opposed to algorithmic computing.
For coverage of distributed systems principles, design and architecture I recommend one of the 3 'Distributed Systems' books by Courolis OR Andrew Tanenbaum OR Sape Mullender.

Distributed Algorithms.......2001-01-18
Je trouve à M. Tel le maître des algorithmes distribués. Les concepts sont précis et bien documentés. Le livre est très complet, très claire et on peut trouver une extense bibliographie sur le sujet.
Book Description
In modern computing a program is usually distributed among several processes. The fundamental challenge when developing reliable distributed programs is to support the cooperation of processes required to execute a common task, even when some of these processes fail. Guerraoui and Rodrigues present an introductory description of fundamental reliable distributed programming abstractions as well as algorithms to implement these abstractions. The authors follow an incremental approach by first introducing basic abstractions in simple distributed environments, before moving to more sophisticated abstractions and more challenging environments. Each core chapter is devoted to one specific class of abstractions, covering reliable delivery, shared memory, consensus and various forms of agreement. This textbook comes with a companion set of running examples implemented in Java. These can be used by students to get a better understanding of how reliable distributed programming abstractions can be implemented and used in practice. Combined, the chapters deliver a full course on reliable distributed programming. The book can also be used as a complete reference on the basic elements required to build reliable distributed applications.
Customer Reviews:
abstractions and algorithms.......2006-06-20
The book is about abstractions and algorithms for distributed programming. Arguably, the abstractions are considered to be at least as important as the algorithms. The abstractions effectively are assumptions that let you push down certain details into lower level code. A very modular approach that allows for a solid object oriented design.
Notably, you should not have to worry about the semantics of pushing bytes from one machine to another. Network programming is now so well established that you won't have to write code to move a byte set. So there is a stable, debugged network protocol stack. (Not necessarily TCP/IP, to be sure.)
The algorithms in the book can then focus on such matters as how to distribute data and collect results across a network of machines. Very importantly, to also detect when a machine might have timed out or otherwise generated a failure.

Book Description
An Introduction to Distributed Algorithms takes up some of the main concepts and algorithms, ranging from basic to advanced techniques and applications, that underlie the programming of distributed-memory systems such as computer networks, networks of workstations, and multiprocessors. Written from the broad perspective of distributed-memory systems in general it includes topics such as algorithms for maximum flow, program debugging, and simulation that do not appear in more orthodox texts on distributed algorithms.
Moving from fundamentals to advances and applications, ten chapters -- with exercises and bibliographic notes -- cover a variety of topics. These include models of distributed computation, information propagation, leader election, distributed snapshots, network synchronization, self- stability, termination detection, deadlock detection, graph algorithms, mutual exclusion, program debugging, and simulation.
All of the algorithms are presented in a clear, template- based format for the description of message-passing computations among the nodes of a connected graph. Such a generic setting allows the treatment of problems originating from many different application areas.
The main ideas and algorithms are described in a way that balances intuition and formal rigor -- most are preceded by a general intuitive discussion and followed by formal statements as to correctness complexity or other properties.

Average Book.......2000-11-04
This is an average book. But I liked the Distributed Algorithms by Nancy Lynch better. It is a much better presented book that this one though most of the material covered is the same give or take a few. Over all a good book worth the money but there are better books.
