The heroine of Sarah Waters's audacious first novel knows her destiny, and seems content with it. Her place is in her father's seaside restaurant, shucking shellfish and stirring soup, singing all the while. "Although I didn't long believe the story told to me by Mother--that they had found me as a baby in an oyster-shell, and a greedy customer had almost eaten me for lunch--for eighteen years I never doubted my own oysterish sympathies, never looked far beyond my father's kitchen for occupation, or for love." At night Nancy Astley often ventures to the nearby music hall, not that she has illusions of being more than an audience member. But the moment she spies a new male impersonator--still something of a curiosity in England circa 1888--her years of innocence come to an end and a life of transformations begins.

Tipping the Velvet, all 472 pages of it, is as saucy, as tantalizing, and as touching as the narrator's first encounter with the seductive but shame-ridden Miss Kitty Butler. And at first even Nancy's family is thrilled with her gender-bending pal, all but her sister, best friend, and bedmate, Alice, "her eyes shining cold and dull, with starlight and suspicion." Not to worry. Soon Nancy and Kitty are off to London, their relationship close though (alas for our heroine) sisterly. We know that bliss will come, and it does, in an exceptionally charged moment. A lesser author would have been content to stop her story there, but Waters has much more in mind for her buttonholing heroine, and for us. In brief, her Everywoman with a sexual difference goes from success onstage to heartbreak to a stint as a male prostitute (necessity truly is the mother of invention) to keeping house for a brother and sister in the Labour movement. And did I mention her long stint as a plaything in the pleasure palace of a rich Sapphist extraordinaire? Diana Lethaby is as cruel as she is carnal, and even the well-concealed Cavendish Ladies' Club isn't outré enough for her. Kitting Nancy out in full, elegant drag, she dares the front desk to turn them away. "We are here," she mocks, "for the sake of the irregular."

Only after some seven years of hard twists and sensual turns does Nancy conclude that a life of sensation is not enough. Still, Tipping the Velvet is so entertaining that readers will wish her sentimental--and hedonistic--education had taken twice as long. --Kerry Fried

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful scense of place and time........2007-09-23

Spectacular book. It has it all, romance, tragedy, humor, sex. I was not sure what to think when I first found this book. I had never read Lesbian Lit before. I read it and enjoyed it very much. I have gone on to read all of Sarah Waters novels, they are are to well written to be dimissed as a niche or genre book.

4 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-08-09

I first saw the film version of Tipping the Velvet which really got me interested in the story line since I missed most of it. Once I heard more about the book, I decided to buy it and I'm not sorry. It's very captivating, to see the hardships the characters go through in trying to be true to themselves in a time when such things are rather frowned upon. The only issue I have with the book is the fact that some parts seem to drag on, with little imagery which makes it hard to see the story while reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Lesbians in London.......2007-07-11

This tale set in 1890's London reminded me that 20th century lesbians did not invent kinky sex. This is an engrossing tale of a "tommish" woman looking for a life among sapphists and libertines.

The huge amount of research Ms. Waters has done is evident in the detailed setting of music halls and socialist demonstrations. Fascinating. Not Waters' newest but I think it is her best.

Also available as a DVD complete with great sex scenes. Look for a cameo appearance by an oversized dildo.

4 out of 5 stars Not her best..........2007-06-20

"Tipping the Velvet" will seem familiar to readers who have experienced Sarah Waters's fiction before. Like "Affinity" and "Fingersmith" the author takes us into a reconstruction of Victorian England and plumbs the relationships between women who were on the fringes of society. "Tipping the Velvet," which was the first of these books to be published, is the most straightforward. It follows a simple structure that might be boring to some readers. The language is repetitive and somewhat plain, all reflecting the first person narratation of a young, inexperienced girl.

I liked the book without loving it. It essentially follows the life of Nancy Astley as she sets off from her provincial childhood and explores the lesbian subculture of 1890s London. There are a few surprises along the way and some subtext about women's lives at this point in history. I liked some of the places Nancy finds for herself along the way, disperate communities in which outcasts find a sense of togetherness.

What I liked a lot less in this novel was Nancy's progression from innocence to experience. A lot of her revelations felt forced, and I didn't entirely buy the self-acceptance the character found for herself. Her growth simply didn't feel organic a lot of the time. Her love life was similarly pat and predictable (with the exception of the section at Felicity Place, which was quite entertaining and inventive).

All in all, I liked "Tipping the Velvet" but it won't top my list of recommendations to others.

5 out of 5 stars Overindulge Yourself.......2007-05-10

This coming-of-age story is sweet and shocking as youth in the Victorian era celebrate overindulgence in a delightful sexual romp.

          Book Description

This text provides an overview and concise introduction to labor relations in Europe. The author seeks to transcend nationalism in labor relations by focusing his discussion and analysis on the continent as a whole and on groups of countries. The national focus is to some extent given up, not for a concentration on differences within nations, but in favor of a discussion of common European developments. European labor relations have a number of basic features in common, not only in collective bargaining and conflict, but also in worker participation and in the role of national governments. And, in a number of ways, these features are strikingly different from the labor relations model seen in the United States. The text, therefore, offers an illuminating analysis of commonalities and differences within European labor relations, as well as between the United States and Europe.

            Book Description

Although a few books on the market set forth the elements of labor arbitration, no single volume exists that gathers the essential elements of the arbitration process in a detailed, comprehensive, and logical presentation. An Introduction to Labor Arbitration is a clear, jargon-free guidebook that inexperienced practitioners will find essential to prepare for arbitration. As an introductory text, this work is an excellent resource for understanding the fundamental theory, practice, and procedure of labor arbitration.

                  Book Description

One of the most important functions of government--risk management--is one of the least well understood. Moving beyond the most familiar public functions--spending, taxation, and regulation--When All Else Fails spotlights the government's pivotal role as a risk manager. It reveals, as never before, the nature and extent of this governmental function, which touches almost every aspect of economic life.

In policies as diverse as limited liability, deposit insurance, Social Security, and federal disaster relief, American lawmakers have managed a wide array of private-sector risks, transforming both the government and countless private actors into insurers of last resort. Drawing on history and economic theory, David Moss investigates these risk-management policies, focusing in particular on the original logic of their enactment. The nation's lawmakers, he finds, have long believed that pervasive imperfections in private markets for risk necessitate a substantial government role. It remains puzzling, though, why such a large number of the resulting policies have proven so popular in a country famous for its anti-statism. Moss suggests that the answer may lie in the nature of the policies themselves, since publicly mandated risk shifting often requires little in the way of invasive bureaucracy. Well suited to a society suspicious of government activism, public risk management has emerged as a critical form of government intervention in the United States.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on economic policy out there.......2003-11-08

I bought this book on the strength of a review in The Economist and was not disappointed. With policies as varied as limited liability, central banking, deposit insurance, and Social Security, American legislators transformed government into an insurer of last resort. Sometimes they shift risk from prospective victims to those better able to afford the loss (product liability); at other times they spread catastrophic risks over the whole tax base (flood insurance). The book charts the expansion of government in the United States from the late 19th century to its zenith in the late 1970s. The author answers the objections of the Chicago and Austrian schools - Becker, Hayek, Mises, and the others - in convincing fashion thanks to its moderate tone and extensive research. The prose is clear, surprising for a book dealing with such complex subject matter. The chapter on the emergence of limited liability corporations is particularly strong. Unfortunately, the chapter on product liability could have used a bit more skepticism. Few readers will share the author's view that tort lawyers are an unalloyed blessing. The author sidesteps many of the problems we now face with exploding damage awards and wide discrepancies in the awards handed down in various jurisdictions. Nor does he grapple with the consequences these problems impose for medical research and the US insurance industry.

                        Book Description

Hampton Hawes [1928–1977] was one of jazz’s greatest pianists. Among his peers from California the self-taught Hawes was second only to Oscar Peterson. At the time of his celebration as New Star of the Year by downbeat magazine (1956), Hawes was already struggling with a heroin addiction that would lead to his arrest and imprisonment, and the interruption of a brilliant career. In 1963 President John F. Kennedy granted Hawes an Executive Pardon. In eloquent and humorous language Hampton Hawes tells of a life of suffering and redemption that reads like an improbable novel. Gary Giddins has called it “a major contribution to the literature of jazz.” This book includes a complete discography and eight pages of photographs.

This is one of the most honest portraits of a human being you will ever find.. I would recommend this along with Charles Mingus' 'Beneath the underdog' for a taste of the 'jazz life'. It is amazing what these guys lived through - and still created such beautiful music!

5 out of 5 stars Touching, sad and beautiful.......2004-09-24

This book is all of these things and more. This is the story of an essentially decent person fighting his own demons. A beautifully crafted book written in the subjects own idiom. A must have for anybody wanting to get inside jazz during the be bop era.

This was the first jazz biography I have read. Hawes does a great job of portraying the terrible effects of heroin addiction. I knew some jazz musicians were busted for heroin use in his time. But I didn't understand how rampant heroin use was in the industry. This book gives great insight into the life of a wonderfully talented jazz pianist. But more importantly, it gives insight into the tumultuous life of a drug addict. Initially, the piano seems to be Hawes' only love. But then there is the realization that heroin is his real love. It is his only motivation to even play the piano.

5 out of 5 stars Raise Up Off Me: A Portrait of Hampton Hawes.......2002-02-07

I love this book. Remember, back then when you played this music, it wasn't exactly a sweet world for the musicians (Black ones). I'm glad he let everyone know how hard it was out there. Drugs took this Bad Boy out the game and the world passed him by. Musicians like Brother Hawes, will never be acknowledged for their great playing in the U.S.A.

If there was a dumb remark in this book, I didn't see it. Again, think back to the times he was living in. He talked about Jimmy Rushing and the way he thought about things. Jimmy Rushing came out of a different era, yet Some of his thoughts were not far behind. When he described Black people, some were light skninned, some were black... The book is not dated, it's just good.

5 out of 5 stars Great book about the life of a well-known jazz musician........2001-12-18

I enjoyed reading this book very much.

It is first of all Hampton Hawes biography of his life as a jazz musician. It tellls us of his way from being a little boy attending his father's church on Sundays to a highly acclaimed jazz pianist, his downfall because of his heroin addiction, his 10-year jail sentence (which was reduced to six after Hawes had written to John Kennedy!), his way back up on the European market, his love relationship with Jackie, and his new found love after separating from Jackie after almost two decades. The very last sentence of the book speaks about his ex-wife Jackie - and it is very touching and shows that Hawes indeed must have been a nice man.

There is only one really dumb remark in the book that I felt was disgusting. (Find it for yourself... ;-))

Hawes repeatedly talks about Black issues. I personally feel that those statements are very intelligent, and can therefore recommend this book not only to those of you interested in jazz, but also to anyone into Black issues.

Sorry, I just don't get it. This book is a long poetic essay about writing styles in the electronic age (I think). It's rather experimental in format and probably couldn't have been published by someone without a famous name. Open it to the table of contents, and you find a page half in pale orange and half in neon green, with white double-grid lines across the page, sort of in a plaid pattern. The table of contents itself is only in one typeface (2 sizes) a remarkable phenomenon in this book. As for the content of the writing, it touches on topics such as virtual reality, teleconferencing, the split of Serbo-Croatian, writing systems of the world, new styles of writing, and synesthesia. If you like reading long-winded philosophical essays written as graphic arts experiments, then this book is for you.

A wonderful book by Eric- a must read for anyone interested in the media. He's also a great guy- he taught me media and perception- I haven't been the same since. Read it and expand your mind!

5 out of 5 stars why OJ & Clinton make us feel so ill, or should........1998-09-17

Let's try this again. This book seems especially pertinent after the Starr report and its resultant cultural hangover. The issue is the utter loss of consensus at what constitutes the boundary of public and private behavior under the influence of electric media; and where there is no consensus, there is no privacy. America, once the bastion of individualism and private identity, is sick with the mixing of public and private things, perhaps the final gasp of literate detachment, and a clear sign of the corporate identity McLuhan predicted two decades ago. This book offers insight and playfulness as an anti-toxin.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the present, or chuck theory for metaphor........1998-08-04

Look out, all you stuffed academics, all you jaded media types, all surfers caught in a web: McLuhan is back, or rather his son. This latest volume brings the McLuhan canon up to the present and centers on electric media. Amid the extraordinary graphics waits the expected compressed McLuhanesque prose; at first a distraction to one comfortable with a plain page and plain text, the graphics slow the rapid reader down to spend more time on each sentence. The ground of the whole is of course all of literature, from Homer to Joyce, supported by the usual mix of science and anthropology. This is no eulogy for literacy a la Birketts, and no wandering lament at declining civility a la Sanders. McLuhan describes the current malaise and gives the reader tools for understanding it, and maybe even stepping apart from it. But be discreet; the electric crowd is not very tolerant of outliers.

This is it. Internetworking Technologies Handbook represents conventional wisdom about the universe of Cisco Systems data-networking products (with the exception of Voice-over-IP products), condensed into a single volume. You ought to have this book on hand for frequent consultation, if you're engaged in running local or wide area networks (LANs or WANs) that are equipped with Cisco hardware. Don't be concerned with whether or not your data-networking environment is sufficiently complex to merit investment in this book, as operators of even the simplest setups will benefit from this authoritative work. Although it's not meant as a study aid, this book will prove helpful to candidates who are studying for Cisco professional certification; review questions at the end of each chapter bolster that application.

This book's greatest strength might be its authors' assumption of compartmentalized knowledge among their readers. The authors have (correctly) organized their work around the idea that someone who knows, for example, IP addressing rules backwards and forwards might not know much at all about the telephony services that local-exchange carriers (LECs) sell. As a result of this editorial decision, chapters are technically deep, but easy to get into. Numerous conceptual diagrams clarify hard-to-visualize phenomena, while frequent references to RFCs (and other standards documents) facilitate primary research where the reader requires it. This latest edition reflects changes to the Cisco data-networking product line as of the last quarter of 2000. --David Wall

Topics covered: Everything Cisco Systems does to facilitate the efficient flow of data among hosts on networks big and small, except those products that have to do with Voice over IP (VoIP). 5 out of 5 stars Enlightning !.......2006-02-02

If you are into the Networking Engineering no mater novice or expert, this is a fascinating textbook on the subject, covering all major Network and Communications Technologies. This is a voluminous book, interesting and perfectly descriptive, from which you will be benefitted from studying, your target being from just gaining knowlegge on the subject, to pursuing a CCIE exam...

                                  4 out of 5 stars In One's Own Hand.......2004-03-20

A handbook or manual literally means, "In ones own hand". Providing you have a large hand, the fourth edition of Internetworking Technologies Handbook is an overview of at least 52 major protocols in 59 chapters and two appendices.

The topology of the book is advantageous for an academic textbook, as well as a general reference. Instructors of networking courses should consider it for a class on networking in general, or as a supplement to any course since it is a book that will benefit the student through out there study of networking.
The book is a bargain if one plans to pursue numerous networking certifications, since there is at least one chapter that would supplement the preparation for almost any exam.

If one reads through the entire book she/he will find that some of the information is dated, yet some is clearly recent. For example in chapters on security recent virus attacks are mentioned. The reader will also note that the handbook is a smorgasbord of a broad assortment of technologies. It is unlikely that any reader would not find several topics that they were previously unfamiliar with.

The main benefit of a book in this day of instant information via the Internet is the organization and summation of many (emphasize many in this case) different references. This handbook provides quick answers to many topics. In some cases the list of references alone is several pages long. You certainly won't learn enough about any of these technologies to design, install, or administer them from this book alone. But you will get a good understanding of how they work.

5 out of 5 stars Internetworking Technologies Handbook- A Must Have.......2003-11-26

Internetworking Technologies Handbook, 4th Ed. (ISBN 1-58705-119-2) is a well written book compiled from the contributions of top networking engineers at Cisco Systems. The book is well laid out and meticulously works its way from the very basics and early beginnings of networking topologies and standards right up to the most current technologies in use today such as VoIP. This edition has added such recent networking topics such as QoS, EAP, and VoIP. This book easily tackles the most complicated topics and puts them into terms that are quite simple to grasp and understand in surprising detail for the novice, as well as the expert. Anyone who is involved in networking from day to day will find this resource invaluable in its explanation of each protocol and technology.
The book is broken into nine Parts that focus on different aspects of networking technology such as Lan Protocols, Wan Technologies, Bridging and Switching, and Routing Protocols. Every Part is then composed of several chapters focusing on individual topics. Each chapter within winds it way though the topic presenting it so that the reader understands the topic. It also provides Cisco design details and examples to assist the reader in any real world applications of the topic. Finally, each chapter ends with a summary and review questions that identify the most important topics of the chapter and test your grasp of them. Also provided are references for further reading on items discussed in each chapter.
Throughout the book detailed diagrams are provided to give a clear picture of what is being discussed. Each diagram is simply presented and not cluttered with unnecessary detail that sometimes accompanies technology books.
Personally, this book was able to really pull together all the little extras that I may find on my CCIE written test I am currently preparing for. There are many different books out there that will help you in preparing for the written test, but they tend to focus strictly on the test, such as a study guide, and less on giving an overall picture of networking so that the reader is both ready for the test and ready for applying their knowledge in the real world. I find that this type of book, one that assists in obtaining a certification and still teach real world fundamentals, is invaluable.
Whether you are a novice just starting out in networking or a well seasoned network engineer preparing for the dreaded CCIE written exam, this book is more than capable in providing the information needed to be successful. And best of all, it is written by the very people who understanding internetworking, Cisco Systems!
As I own many titles written on many different networking and computer topics, I would have to rank this book as 5 out of 5 in terms of content, format, and execution. I would highly recommend this book to anyone involved in network design and implementation and especially to anyone who is about to embark on the CCIE exam.

4 out of 5 stars Not an easy read, but a good, solid reference........2001-09-02

This book is not an "easy read", but it's very informative. With over 1,000 pages of in-depth networking technologies, you would think a book like this would put you into "Snoozeville" immediately; but, surprisingly, I found it to be well-written and easy-to-understand. The smaller chapter sizes helps you learn in bite-sized chunks.

Eventhough I'm not going for my Cisco certifications right away, this book helped answer many networking questions I had while studying for my MCSE tests.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Good buy.......2001-02-24

This book concisely and succintly explains all Internetworking (LAN ,WAN) concepts in a way useful to the novice and also serves as a ready reference to the experienced professional. The print is also pleasing to the eye. However this compendium is a collection of all the Cisco Tutorials on the website.ALso many technologies are dealt with at a cursory level and the treatment could have been more in depth. But to sum up,a good buy.
