Book Description
Now it's easier than ever for woodworkers to get a perfect finish on every project! This book dispels the myths about wood finishing and explains exactly how and why every finish behaves the way it does.
Customer Reviews:
Even a Novice can learn from this expert!.......2007-09-04
Ive learned more just reading this book and can't wait to try out all the tips and tricks Bob has put into this book. All aspects (even some I'll never use) are covered! I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to finish their special project!
Great teaching tool........2007-07-20
This book is very excellent for picking up a few tips and learning new things. I've used it more than I thought I would and really appreciate the professional manner in which it explains things. Many pictures to "Show" the finished product. This is very helpful in comparing the end result. It's a great addition to the shop. Try one, you'll like it.
understanding wood finishing how to select and right finish.......2007-05-07
i already do restoration but this book opened my eyes a hell of a lot its a fantastic book and anybody that restores for a leaving or as an hoby should own one of these books
Concise, well written, comprehensive.......2007-04-10
Highly recommended. Anyone who has ever applied a finish to a piece of wood, from professional wood worker to Saturday afternoon handyman, will benefit from this book.
Simply the Best!.......2007-04-09
There is really no need to say anything more than that...this book is without equal in the area of finishing information. It is comprehensive in scope, well researched (backed up with years of personal experience)and presented in a clear and entertaining format.
Many experts in the shop have faced with great trepidation the blank screen of the computer when they have attempted to impart with the rest of us their years of gathered wisdom and abilities. Bob Flexner seemed to have slid easily into the author's chair and rewards all woodworkers with a volume of immense readability.
If you simply build things in the workshop, this book is of no value to you. If you ever intend to apply a finish to a piece then this book is one you should definitely own!
I am glad to add my voice to the dozens here who have already praised this book and agree wholeheartedly with their positive assessments.
My prediction is that if you add this book to your shop library you will feel the same way.

Book Description
Sam Slick of Slickville, Connecticut, is a Yankee clock-peddler who accompanies a visiting English gentleman on an unforgettable tour of early nineteenth-century Nova Scotia. His shrewd observations and witty commentaries make up the thirty-three sketches of The Clockmaker.
First serialized in 1835 and 1836 and then published together in late 1836 in response to public demand, the sketches of The Clockmaker established Judge Thomas Chandler Haliburton as a satirical humorist of international stature.
The New Canadian Library edition is an unabridged reprint of the complete original text.
Customer Reviews:
Nova Scotia meets Sam Slick: never the same again.......1998-08-31
Series of short stories written originally for The Nova Scotian in the early 1830s. The narrator while riding through Nova Scotia meets an itinerant clock seller - Samual Slick of Slickville, Connecticut. The stories concern the views and opinions of Slick about - well, almost anything. And, for the most part, they are funny. A great deal of the book is a satire or parody of the moralizing story popular at the time: although occasionally, the stories themselves do fall into the moralizing trap themselves. If nothing else, great history as told by a contemporary neighbour of a young United States. The period is equidistant between the revolutionary war and the civil war. In one story, Sam Slick expounds on the great freedoms of the American people: all men created equal. The narrator points out that it is the British Empire (and hence Nova Scotia) where slavery is abolished. Maybe, says the narrator, the American constitution meant all white people are created equal. The humour is often of this type where paradoxes and false syllogisms are revealed.

Book Description
This collection of ten stories explores the confusion, frustration and rewards of growing up. From Saying Good-Bye: The Island feels different without my dad. When we came here for our three weeks every summer, just the two of us, we'd stay in the little fishing shack right down by the water, curling up in sleeping bags on musty blown-up air mattresses...Every night, before we went to bed, Dad and I would lie on our backs in the long sweet grass beside the shack and watchthe sky, and he'd point out the constellations...This summer was my mom's idea. I didn't want to come, but she said it would make me feel less lonely for Dad...And you have a job to do there, she'd said witha stern look, as if I could ever forget what my dad had asked me to do.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Special Ed Preschoolers with audio.......2007-09-26
Baby Beluga is a fantastic book for the class I work in. The three and four year old special ed students LOVE this book along with Raffi's music being played. I strongly recommend it for any child. I'm purchasing the book and the CD for my nephews who do not have any disabilities because I know they'll love it too.
My Daughter LOVES This Book!.......2007-08-23
My daughter is crazy about this book, and she has been since she was about 8 months old. I think the fact that you can't help but sing the story when you read it makes it much more interesting. I've never actually heard the whole song before, so I can only guess if I'm singing it correctly. She loves it though. As always, the cardboard pages make for a very durable baby book.
Classic sing-a-long.......2007-07-03
It's great to have a classic song in book form with attractive illustrations. It's one of my 11-month old's favorite bedtime books. He turns the pages while I sing him the tune. The pages are sturdy enough for him to turn them himself.
Wonderful!.......2007-05-29
This board book is a wonderful addition to our collection of books as the colors and images grab my son's attention and he can see the words that accompany the song I sing to him often. What a wonderful idea to create a book using the Baby Beluga lyrics.
Baby Beluga.......2007-05-28
A fun book for preschoolers! As a child care professional this is a book (and CD as well) that the children enjoy. They actually can see the pictures that go with the words of the CD. A must have for all Family Child Care Providers!

Beluga whales and their babies.......2001-06-22
This is an excellent factual book about the birth, habitat and life of a beluga whale. The text is full of information stated in a simple and direct way that young readers would be able to read. The pictures are wonderful, although the actaul photograph of the baby beluga being born is one I would avoid in my elementary classroom. I know the students would think the photos are as adorable as I did! The table of contents, pronounciation keys and glossary are helpful for young students. The big print and bold face vocabulary words make this book perfect for an elementary classroom. The authentic photographs make this book perfect for any child interested in whales or aquariums. I think this is an excellent resource for young children. I love this book!!!

HTML Goodies deserves a place in the ranks of the best Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) books on the market. Not only does Author Joe Burns teach readers how to use HTML (and in such a wonderfully friendly way), he also explains how to create stylish, efficient Web documents that will keep surfers coming back.
Burns has structured the book into a series of brief tutorials, each of which tackles a particular technical challenge that might confront a Webmaster. One chapter explains image maps, another goes into depth on frames, while others explain Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and Java applets. The tutorials consist of a series of experiments--this code yields this result--interspersed with questions and answers. Where it's appropriate, Burns suggests techniques he's found effective in a variety of situations. You'll be astounded by what you can learn from his advice.
HTML Goodies sprang from Burns's Web site of the same name, a popular one with lots of tutorials and downloadable freebies. It features discussions about Web page development, and Burns is always a frequent contributor. The site does a superb job of standing in for the CD-ROM that this book lacks--the site's a better deal, since it's more current and allows interactivity. --David Wall

Well, one thing we were not thought in school is the jungle like similiarity of the internet. Anyone venturing into internet marketing or wanting to learn html will be amazed by the terms and jargons. The fun part is that admist all this madness, Joe Burns outweigh them all.
Well, htmlgoodies is not just your ordinary book of study, study and get confuse type of book, it's a fun book as you will not only learn all the html code in a fun loving way, you will also think you where reading a, comedy or theraupetic book(killing stress, laughing and learning on) for free.
Now the best part of the book is this, it takes away the frustration of learning something as alien as html. Trust me on this. As a newbie, is either you find some book like htmgoodies that not only teaches you the jargons and simplify your life by gving you a good dose of laughter or you will end up giving up your dreams of learning html by reading all those too-know-it-all,cramped up information on the net or in some books.
I will recomend htmlgoodies anytime, anywhere. Besides, since am already into this, l mean writing this review, l would like to use this opporturnity to ask Joe Burns which of mad house he escaped from since l will like to be his fans. Am just dying of curiosity. Jesus, that's some book

Thank you Joe! Your HTML help is the best!.......2004-07-08
I am a work at home mom whom went from no html knowledge to MUCH html knowledge with the help from Joe B's information. I still to this day referance his website whenever I need a refresher on something or want to learn something new. I started my site with a couple pages that was sadly lacking anything 'nice' about it to making that website into a huge site that has well over 100 pages in it and many daily visitors. Anytime someone asks me how I do that, or what's my favorite html site, I always refer them to your site. Thank you for helping me make my site
what it is today, I would'nt have turned it into a website business for this work at home mom without you! You have MUCH knowledge and I thank you for taking the time to share it with us!

Great Book by a Great Guy.......2004-03-17
Joe Burn's is a unique technical author that writes as if he is talking to you. I recommend this book to anyone-that includes the non-technical folks--interested in setting up his/her own website. WHY? Because this book IS for beginners. It is written in a simple to follow, easy to read style. I wish more technical authors would follow Joe's simple style for their writing. Highly recommended!

The best plain english "how to" books on site design ever!.......2003-08-16
I cannot say enough about this Joe Burns books. I discovered his website back in the 90's and the book -- HTML Goodies -- came soon thereafter. I am a person who has no formal training in website design, computers, anything technical. With Dr. Burns' tutorials, I learned html, website design, adding graphics, javascript, getting my site online, and everything else I needed to know to design and get my (20+ page) business website active and making money. The best part of all is that Dr. Burns' books and tutorials are written in PLAIN ENGLISH -- no tech degree needed to understand them. If you use this book to learn html, you'll never use any of the quicky code writing software kits. I highly recommend this book, as well as Dr. Burns' books: Beyond HTML Goodies and Javascript Goodies. You'll find these books are worth far more than their current price.
Book Description
Go beyond the basics and learn how the pros add and use dynamic HTML features and advanced JavaScript techniques. Beyond HTML Goodies demonstrates dozens of new and different features readers can add to their existing Web pages using HTML and JavaScript. The book starts with simple text and image tips, such as adding a clock to a Web page or causing text to appear when the mouse moves over an image. It gradually builds to more complex tricks, including manipulating forms or working with cookies behind the scenes. Throughout the book, readers enjoy Joe's snappy style and "to the point" discussion of each "goody" in the book.

Solutions to some of the nonstandard problems you may face.......2002-07-17
The title is a bit misleading, in that the book is nearly all about Javascript. Broken down into a collection of short tutorials, each of which solves a specific problem, they are all understandable. The problems solved are not general in nature, in that not everyone needs to know how to solve them. However, they can be considered members of the category of unusual problems with a non-obvious solution. You may never confront the specific problem, but if you do, then the solution is here for you.
Some of the problems solved are:
* How to create a pop under window.
* How to use a table to create an image with rounded corners.
* How to create printable pages where the banner ads are absent.
* How to redirect the print of a page so that another is printed.
* How to prevent a page from being cached on the client machine.
* How to create an OnError error handling page.
In general, the statement of the problem and the solution take up less than three pages. With very little code to explain, the solutions are easy to understand. I have been teaching and programming in Javascript for over six years and yet I learned several things from the book. To sweeten the deal even further, all of the source code, graphics and other data used in the book are freely available from the companion web site ...
Depending on what you are creating, you may never have a use for the solutions in this book. However, if you are faced with one of these problems, then the solution is well in hand and you will be happy with the way it is constructed.
