If you like this almanac, you'll love American Almanacs, A Living History, in which the Old Farmers Almanac is discussed in major detail from a conceptual, historical, and practical angle. American Almanacs, A living History is a great video or dvd for anyone who loves their farmers Almanacs.

There's nothing "old" about it.......2003-07-08

At one time, no home in America was complete without an Almanac. While that tradition has faded, the book that started it all--The Old Farmer's Almanac--remains a useful and interesting resource; one that no home should be without. The Old Farmer's Almanac features everything that makes an Almanac an Almanac, including its sunrise and sunset times, tide tables, and weather predictions for the entire year (and most of the time I've found them to be right on!). Amongst these essential facts, there are an abundance of entertaining stories that range from the historical and scientific to home and garden tips and amusing antedotes. This book just offers so much and I know that once you pick up, you'll be hooked. I've always found something of interest in The Old Farmer's Almanac and can't wait because the new edition comes out in September!

What I like about the Old Farmer's Almanac 2003 Western Edition is that all hours indicated are in Pacific Time Zone. There is so much information in this almanac I can only touch the surface. There is a section of What's IN this year for men and women, and what's OUT. In other words, what's cool this year and no longer cool. Find out the right days of each month to get your hair cut to encourage growth, when to plant your crops and when to start your diet. You'll find a list of holidays, eclipses lunar & solar to look for and fascinating meteor showers. You will have the time of sunrise/sunset and moonrise/moonset for each day and time correction for your area. There is even a convenient knob hole in the upper left-hand corner of the book for hanging it where you need it the most.

In 1975, after vigorous campaigning by the United Farm Workers union, the state of California passed Agricultural Labor Relations Act (ALRA), a pioneering self-help strategy granting farm workers the right to organize into unions. A quarter century later, only a tiny percentage of farm workers in the state belong to unions, and wages remain less than half of those of nonfarm employees. Why did the ALRA fail? One of the nation's foremost authorities on farm workers here explores the reasons behind its unfulfilled promise.

Philip L. Martin examines the key features of the farm labor market in California, including the shifting ethnicity of the worker pool and the evolution of the major unions, beginning with the Wobblies. Finally, he reviews the impact of immigration on agriculture in the state.

Today, many states look to the California experience to assess whether the ALRA can serve as a model for their own farm labor relations laws. In Martin's view, California's efforts to grant rights to farm workers so that they can help themselves have failed because of continued unauthorized migration and the changing structure of farm employment. Martin argues that alternative policies would make farming profitable, raise farm worker wages, and still keep groceries affordable.

As an inveterate cod pyschologist, I loved this book from start to finish. It gave me a real taste for a subject I actually know nothing about, and has certainly whetted my appetite to learn more. The author's style had me chortling from the start, without getting in the way of providing information. If you're looking for a "beginner's guide" to pyschology, this is a great place to start.

For many companies, large or small, the mission-critical applications run in the CICS environment. The difficulty of opening up those business logic and data for access through web interface often comes from the fact that the mainframe programmers don't know much about the web technology while the new web guys usually know little about CICS. This book bridges the gap between the two camps, and provides step-by-step instruction on how to apply and integrate the different technologies including Java, MQSeries, etc. This book is a must-read for anyone responsible integrating CICS and web interface. The only drawback is that this book focuses on OS/390, while there are many CICS applications running in other platforms such as OS/2.
