Book Description

21st Century Game Design is not just a book about game design. It's an answer to two important questions: who are we designing games for and how do we do it best? Written by industry pros, the book teaches designers how to design better games from a why perspective. All good designers know the fundamentals of how to design a game, but learning to design games that really satisfy your players takes more than technical skill. To do this successfully, you need to know your intended audience and understand their needs. Throughout the book you'll learn about defining and investigating player needs. A model of play styles is then presented that was developed by applying psychological metrics to survey data and case studies. This model identifi es some of the core themes in player needs as represented by four player types-- Conqueror, Manager, Wanderer, and Participant. In addition to discussing player needs, the book also explores how games can reach wider audiences by appealing to the interests of the core gaming community, and it considers the fundamental principles of game design. Methods such as interface design, structural elements, and game world abstractions are discussed in relation to the needs of the audience. The book does not attempt to present an absolute view of the craft of game design, but rather it demonstrates how an audience model can inform the design process and take the games industry forward at a time when it is facing a schism between the games that the audience would like to play, and the games the development community would like to make. Game designers, producers, marketing executives, and anyone who wishes to understand the relationship between a game and its audience will find much to learn from 21st Century Game Design.

5 out of 5 stars Examines how best to design games and tailor them for specific kinds of audiences.......2006-01-03

An even wider audience will be found for Chris Bateman and Richard Boon's 21st Century Game Design, which examines how best to design games and tailor them for specific kinds of audiences. Chapters focus more on the psyche and needs of the player than most programming or game books, discussing both how games can address these desires and how they can appeal to a wider audience outside the hard-core gamer. Any game designer or those seeking to develop and distribute games would do well to examine 21st Century Game Design with its audience-oriented focus.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Customer Wants.......2005-10-29

I suppose it comes as no surprise to anyone to hear that game design has gotten very complex. The power of computers has grown tremendously since the first games like Pong. And with the ability to do more on the computer, and with more competition in the marketplace the need for a higher class of game designer has become clear.

Now game designers have to consider such things as the age, gender, ability, attitude of the player -- many years ago my daughter got hooked on the Roger Rabit game. I told an executive in the Disney game group that they needed some games for young girls. He turned me down with a huff. 'We have Mickey Mouse,' he said. 'Yes,' I told him, 'but you also have Minnie Mouse.' He tuned me out. Now such a manager couldn't afford to ignore such an audience.

This is a book written by professionals on what it will take to suceed in game development in the coming years. These people have 'been there, done that,' pay attention to what they say.

5 out of 5 stars A brain to supplant the heart of game design.......2005-10-01

21st Century Game Design's quiet brilliance lies in its logical, sensible treatment of game design in today's market. Things game designers may know on some intuitive level, but often have no conscious access to, no way of articulating, this book illuminates. Chris Bateman's DGD1 audience model allows designers to make more intelligent, informed decisions in the way they design.

Thorough implementation of the principles Bateman describes would help everyone: help publishers understand and support developers, help marketers know who to target, and most importantly of all, help gamers by making games that are made with their playstyles in mind. Not all gamers game alike, so as our industry grows and matures, understanding and identifying the different types of gamers is essential.

Of particular import for growth of our industry is appeal to women and the casual segment, considerations that Bateman shows need not be commensurate with alienating the hardcore segment. You don't need to "water down" a great game to broaden its potential audience; you just need to be aware of your audience and make design choices accordingly.
Bateman shows us that great game design is ultimately subjective; therefore an audience-driven approach to game design is essential to designing games in the 21st century.

For any colleges and universities that have or are developing game design based cirriculum, for all industry professionals: here is an indispensable text.

    Book Description

The Super Analysts Conversations with the World's Leading Stock Market Investors and Analysts The Super Analysts covers the full spectrum of the world's equities markets and includes interviews with fund managers and analysts from around the globe. This is a book dedicated to understanding how some of the world's top professionals approach the challenge of making money out of stocks, their methods and philosophies. "In Buddhism, sitting at the feet of the master is well understood as the most effective way to learn. Investment professionals have no such mantra and it is unusual for the "stars" to share their experiences and approaches. In this book, Andrew Leeming has interviewed the world's leading investors and analysts to understand how they managed to achieve great success. With the spread of publicly available information-in particular via the Internet-adding value, interpreting and utilising this information is critical in the investment process. These interviews allow the reader to benefit from the experiences of experts and will act as a guide which is as effective as sitting at their feet. This book is insightful and an essential read for all interested in investing." - David Robins Chairman & CEO ING Barings "Andrew Leeming has put together a series of great in-depth interviews with a wide gamut of investors that pose intelligent questions and get intelligent answers. It's a great and easy read for anyone seriously interested in how stock market professionals work day in and day out." - Rob Ferguson Chairman BT Funds Management "In this day of all-star research teams, when short-term performance is sometimes carried to irrational extremes, it's refreshing to hear that some of the best stock-pickers think success boils down to such fundamental issues as discipline, a healthy dose of skepticism.and humility! If you're thinking of a career in financial services, a manager trying to deal with the market's insatiable appetite for information, or, just an average investor, there's a gold mine of common sense in these insightful interviews." - John T. Olds Vice-Chairman and CEO DBS Group Holdings Ltd

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars A useful read.......2001-08-06

I enjoyed this book. Most of the people seemed to be fundamentalists. (I'm yet to find people in such positions to be chartists.) The interviews were with a wide range of types of analysts. The comments of most of them about the problem of internet bubble seemed quite astute. Certainly, most of these people realised that at the end of the day cash generation was final judge of success or failure of the Net stocks.

However I wish Andrew Leeming explained what a "buy" side anaylsist and a "sell" side analyst was. I'm reasonably financially literate but I hadn't come across these terms before. Similarly other people may have found his use of analyst jargon hard to decipher.

Overall though, Leeming has done a reasonable job of explaining the jargon either in the interview or with his useful footnotes. So if a second edition comes out, perhaps he should have a 10 pages or so giving a broad picture of what an analysts does, continuing issues that confront them and contemorary issues that are confronting them as a preface to the book. This way all the readers would coming from a common level of knowledge when the interviews start.

A surprising common thread that came from these "Masters of the Universe" was humility a good analyst (as opposed to a media queen) required. Once you think you are god's gift to finance your useful life as an ananlysts is about over.

This humility factor also was mentioned a couple of times with regard to company management. In particular, the Australian Multinational Minerals company "BHP" gets bucketed number of times for it's arrogant management in the 1990's.

One take home message from this book is that mineral/mining stocks (other than perhaps oil) are not buy-and-hold stocks and they tend to be net destroyers of shareholders wealth. They are highly cyclical and should only be traded that way.

5 out of 5 stars For all serious investors.......2001-06-23

This book gives you an insight into how top analysts cover stocks and value them. Most of the analysts have been covering stocks for over ten years. This makes their stories all the more valuable. If you use fundamental analysis then this book is a definite Buy recomendaton.

A plus for me was the Australian content which is rare in such books.

Reading this book will make you a better investor.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for aspiring analysts.......2001-01-23

Leeming asks some really good questions to some influential analysts and their advice and experiences should be taken into consideration. We are able to experience vicariously what they went through and remember them as novices climb up that corporate ladder. A good point were the different valuation techniques that each analyst prefered in their sector. However, after some time the book keeps reiterating the same points by which analysts should live by. Therefore getting a little stale.Overall, i felt i benefited from reading this book and did not regret reading it.

            Book Description

The atrocities of 11 September 2001 and the more recent casualties due to anthrax bioterrorism have dramatically emphasized the potential danger of biological warfare and bioterrorism. The editors of "Antiviral Research" have taken the initiative to edit a special issue of the Journal, focusing on Viral Bioterrorism and Biodefense. It is the first time in history that a special volume has been dedicated to this topic, which in view of the current circumstances is timely, appropriate and relevant. To what extent could viruses be "weaponized", i.e. turned into biological weapons, and used for biowarfare, which viruses would lend themselves for this purpose, how should we estimate the risk and the consequences, which diagnostic measures should be taken, and how should we react prophylactically, and, if needed, therapeutically?

              Book Description

This book addresses a broad range of problems related to observed manifestations of chaotic motions in galactic and stellar objects, by invoking basic theory, numerical modeling, and observational evidence. For the first time, methods of stochastic dynamics are applied to actually observed astronomical objects, e.g. the gaseous disc of the spiral galaxy NGC 3631. In the latter case, the existence of chaotic trajectories in the boundary of giant vortices was recently found by the calculation of the Lyapunov characteristic number of these trajectories.

The reader will find research results on the peculiarities of chaotic system behaviour; a study of the integrals of motion in self-consistent systems; numerical modeling results of the evolution process of disk systems involving resonance excitation of the density waves in spiral galaxies; a review of specific formations in stars and high-energy sources demonstrating their stochastic nature; a discussion of the peculiarities of the precessional motion of the accretion disk and relativistic jets in the double system SS 433; etc.

This book stands out as the first one that deals with the problem of chaos in real astrophysical objects. It is intended for graduate and post-graduate students in the fields of non-linear dynamics, astrophysics, planetary and space physics; specifically for those dealing with computer modeling of the relevant processes.

              Book Description

Discrete dynamical systems are essentially iterated functions. Given the ease with which computers can do iteration, it is now possible for anyone with access to a personal computer to generate beautiful images whose roots lie in discrete dynamical systems. Images of Mandelbrot and Julia sets abound in publications both mathematical and not. The mathematics behind the pictures are beautiful in their own right and are the subject of this text. The level of the presentation is suitable for advanced undergraduates with a year of calculus behind them. Students in the author's courses using this material have come from numerous disciplines; many have been majors in other disciplines who are taking mathematics courses out of general interest. Concepts from calculus are reviewed as necessary. Mathematica programs that illustrate the dynamics and that will aid the student in doing the exercises are included in an appendix.

This is an excellent book for teaching for mathematics students. Besides the standard material it contains a chapter about some numerical methods as dynamical systems. I strongly propose that a third updated edition is made.

              WHO IS ELIJAH CLEARFATHER?

Futuristic bioweapon or good old-fashioned messiah? Reincarnated ex-porn star or mutant information-age revolutionary? The man who awakens in New York City’s Central Park with no memory of his identity and the enigmatic message FATHER FORGIVE THEM F carved into the flesh of his back may be all of these things and more.

Taken in (and then expelled) by a group of freedom fighters battling the soul-deadening Vitessa Cultporation, Clearfather is a stranger in an even stranger land. Following tantalizing clues that point to the gnomic Stinky Wiggler, and pursued by murderous Vitessa agents, Clearfather embarks on a surreal odyssey of self-discovery across an America that resembles a vast amusement park designed by some unholy trinity of Walt Disney, Hunter S. Thompson, and Hieronymus Bosch.

Accompanying Clearfather is an unforgettable cast of characters–including Aretha Nightingale, an ex-football-playing drag queen; Dooley Duck and Ubba Dubba, hologram cartoon characters sprung outrageously to life; and the ethereally beautiful Kokomo, whose past is as much a mystery as Clearfather’s own.

By turns hilarious and deeply moving, a savage, fiercely intelligent satire that is also a page-turning adventure and a transcendent love story, Zanesville marks the arrival of a brilliant new voice in fiction.

              5 out of 5 stars Immaculately Amazing.......2007-06-15

Zanesville is amazing, its on par with Vonnegut, Gaiman, and Piers Anthony, like some twisted lovechild. The images paint themselves in your mind and are enhanced by Saknussemm's grasp of language and mood. I cannot say enough good things about Zanesville. It is the best novel I have possibly ever read. I continue to suggest this to everyone I know.

              4 out of 5 stars Self-described "techno-theological post-American monster vaudeville".......2006-05-04

As I was reading Kris Saknussemm's debut novel Zanesville, I kept wondering, "In what part of the universe does this guy's mind reside?" I know it's an entirely different plane than most -- but that's a good thing.

If forced to pigeonhole Zanesville, you would probably categorize the book as science fiction. But that is an understatement -- it defies categorization. How does Saknussemm describe the book? As "techno-theological post-American monster vaudeville." Now maybe you have a glimpse of why I was wondering what universe his mind inhabits.

Zanesville, which Saknussemm plans to be the first in a proposed series he calls The Lodemania Testament, actually starts in 1838 with the birth of Lloyd Meadhorn Sitturd, "one of the most neglected geniuses in history." As a young boy, Sitturd is whisked up into a tornado on July 4, in Dustdevil, Tex., only to be returned to the exact spot unharmed some 20 minutes later. On July 14, 1913, after a life as an inventor, businessman, recluse and cult leader, Sitturd again disappears in another tornado in Dustdevil, this time never to be heard from again.

Suddenly, we are in a post-apocalyptic America, where a man we will come to know as Elijah Clearfather awakens in New York's Central Park, not knowing who he is but believing he was deposited there by a whirlwind. This is an America far different than Sitturd's or ours. It is run by the Vitessa Cultporation. The California coast has disappeared in an earthquake called Bigfoot and the new center of "culture" in the western U.S. is LosVegas, Nevadafornia. McDonald's has been converted to McTavish's, which has replaced the hamburger with haggis ("sheep stomach with your choice of filling.") Modern technology consists of cyberneering, genetainment and neurotecture. America has survived (?) a Holy War waged by Al-Waqi'a. Much of the country is roamed by bandits, some of the Mad Max variety, with the cannibals among them distinguished by the Mickey Mouse flags they fly.

Clearfather is taken in by a group of anti-Vitessa rebels whose camp in Central Park is hidden by a "Mirror Field." Sensing his latent abilities, they fill him with psychoactive drugs and inject mind probes. When the results they obtain leave them uncertain whether Clearfather is a messiah, a Vitessa Cultporation intelligence agent, a "weapon of mass instruction" or simply an amnesiac, the rebels set Clearfather loose. He is given a Greyhound bus pass and a map indicating places from his past they derived from the psych probes. As Clearfather searches for his past and himself, he takes us from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis to Dustdevil to LosVegas and, ultimately, to a canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Along the way, he meets and travels with a variety of people, having significant effects on each and society, and sees the state of American life and culture.

Once in South Dakota, where "the speed of culture" runs slower, Clearfather learns who and what he is and what is expected of him. Yet this discovery also involves even more and deeper layers of the reality he has experienced so far. Both the varying levels of reality and the depiction of a damaged and dystopic America make Zanesville occasionally reminiscent of Philip K. Dick's work. Yet Saknussemm is more original than imitative. Vortices are a common theme in Zanesville. They are not only an integral part of the story but seem equally indicative of the narrative and Saknussemm's use of styles. Ranging from satire to straight-out humor to political and religious commentary, this is one of those works that has you chuckling one minute, scratching your head the next and then pausing to think deeply. Saknussemm's description of his book is dead on and it is the expressions of a "techno-theological" philosophy that will cause you to not only pause and ponder while reading, but keep you thinking long after you have put it down.

I'm still not quite sure what type of universe Saknussemm and Clearfather inhabit. There is, however, no doubt that Zanesville is a whirlwind of concepts and ideas that are worth a series to explore.

5 out of 5 stars Impossible To Put Down, Ready To Be A Movie.......2006-03-29

Impossible to put down and ready to be a movie, Zanesville isn't just good, it's great. Kris Saknussemm's writing is refreshingly original. You have to admire the plot and flow. From the third paragraph that describes the lead character's awakening -- "He'd been standing there for a long time, he thought, having woken by the fountain, amazed to find that his hair was long and so blond it almost seemed to glow in the dark" -- to the journey of the Spiritcruiser at the end, every word of Zanesville is waiting to be savored. As a fan of both futuristic novels and satire, a collector of comic books, and someone who relishes outstanding science fiction and fantasy ("V For Vendetta" is high on my list of recent movie favorites), I found the character development in Zanesville to be brilliantly inventive. Don't miss out on this creative masterpiece. Every library should have a copy. I can't wait for Saknussemm's next book.

5 out of 5 stars In the spirit of PK Dick, Burroughs--and Tom Robbins.......2006-03-27

I was told by friends that I had to read this book. Now I know why. It's a mix of razor sharp, clever satire and a surreal adventure fable that is both bizarre and also strangely moving. I haven't been as amused, puzzled or inspired by a novel in a long time. I think this could develop a real cult following.

5 out of 5 stars REALLY FUN, INVENTIVE STUFF.......2006-03-27

I'd read the rave review for this book in LA CityBeat and was curious about how it would match up against expectations. The answer? Zanesville is one of the funniest, lewdest and most disturbing books I've ever read. I can't think of a book in recent memory that displayed such a unique quality of imagination. The fictional world, and it is a world, is brought to life with such intensity of detail. Even if you're not a fan of out-there new fiction, you will enjoy and admire the humor. At several points I laughed out loud and had to read passages back to myself. Really fun, inventive
stuff. This is one of the few new books that lives up to the rave reviews.
