Set in Portland, Oregon it's fun to read about real locations. The book details the struggle of the main character who is caring for and dealing with the terminal illness of her uncle. Humorously she is a food writer who has her own issues with food and weight. Of course, her mother is a skinny minnie who is concerned with appearances. The book has some great twists and turns and things happen that keep you wondering. Don't want to say too much about this because I don't want to ruin the ending for readers. Well worth the money to buy this book.

When I bought the book I was on a book buying frenzy. When I finally got around to reading it I had wondered why I had ordered it. I guess my preference choices had changed since the purchase date. Since I love to read and it was next up, I thought I would give it a try and I am so glad I did. What a wonderfully entertaining book. The main character was likeable, funny and real. Uncle Benny was lovable and his life, loves and losses left me with a heavy heart and tears. Each character was brought to life as if I knew them personally. The laughter, smiles and tears left me glad I gave this wonderful book a try.

I wish i would have read reviews more careful before buying this book as it's very sad and i was going for something funny to cheer me up. It's definately worth reading though, and i'm totally in love with Ellie with her big kind heart. I wish I meet people like this more often in my life.
A Readable Feast.......2007-05-23
I read about 100 books a year, and seldom have I been so taken with a novel. The book was a sensual feast, the characters were beautifully real. I'll recommend this story and this author to dozens of friends.

The title made me pick up the book. The story kept me turning pages--yep!--until well past midnight. And it's all Jennie Shortridge's fault for writing such a wonderful, touching story and making every single word and sentence count (no skimming allowed). Jennie's heroine, Eleanor Samuel, will not soon be forgotten. And, yes, that means that "Riding with the Queen" is now in my library and tagged for my next overnight reading session.

Excellent resource and cookbook outlining the major food groups and supplements to aid in the best digestion possible - a major contributor to health afflictions if not balanced!! Truly a good reference book if trying to lose weight, change bad dietary habits or even improve skin's appearance - truly a miracle! I lost 5 pounds the first week! Recommended for all who are still eating meat and potatoes, hamburgers, greasy foods, and fast foods -- and not feeling and looking your absolute best - time to make a change!!

This book provides you with guidance both in determining the types of foods that actually improve health and in obtaining and preparing those foods. It doesn't seem too complicated--eat only what your body wants!

As a vegetarian who loves to cook, I have lots of veg or veg-friendly cookbooks, but this one is my absolute favorite. I trust it completely-- every recipe is delicious. My favorites include the light quiche-like vegetable tarts (I started with the tomato and chard tart recipe, but then branched out into mushrooms, broccoli, leeks, etc, as my mood strikes) and the broccoli salad with chili lime basil dressing. The simple stir-fry tofu made for this salad is the absolute best tofu I've ever had-- the only trouble with it is how hard it is to refrain from eating it so that enough ends up in the salad!

A "Zen" approach to cooking? The book features an essay by Eido Shimano roshi, and the author is informed by her experiences cooking for the sangha at Dai Bosatsu monastery, but this book stands most prominently as a fine vegetarian cookbook, light on dairy ingredients and hard-to-find items. The recipes are clear, uncomplicated, and my own "success" rate with them has been very high.
The book's sections are organized into breakfast ideas, an excellent chapter of soup recipes (check out the minty lentil soup - a lentil soup primavera?!?), mexican ideas, pizzas!, great salad ideas, and desserts. Crepes and polenta are also introduced to the beginner or near-beginner.

QUESTIONABLE INTEGRITY.......2006-08-25
Before you buy this book, it might be helpful for you to know about the integrity of the author. Denise Martin is currently in violation of a written contract that requires her to pay for the goods and services I have provided for her. Her attempts to avoid paying have been elaborate and persistent. My experience of Denise Martin is but one voice. I cannot speak for everyone else, but I can say clearly, as an intelligent and perceptive individual, that Denise Martin, at the very least, has questionable integrity.

Eating My Way to Heaven is ostensibly the autobiography of a woman, Denise Martin, whose mission is to spread the word about healthy eating and especially the total avoidance of sugar. I completely agree with her mission and think word of it should spread. That said, this book is a peek inside the mind of a very unusual person.
I stayed up all night reading her book---I couldn't put it down. It chronicles Denise Martin's childhood all the way up to her current life as a healthy foods advocate. More than that, though, it gives you insight into the mind of someone apparently with a serious personality disorder. This point of view was stunning, literally stunning...I read with amazement how the author has spent most of her life mooching money from others, justifying her bizarre behavior, and continuing---despite it all---on her mission to make something of her life, especially in the area of healthy eating. I have known such people before (people with personality disorders), but never had a chance to understand how they think and why their behavior makes sense to them. This book shows how Denise Martin made sense of her life and world, and she tells her story in her own way; I'm not certain from my reading that she even understands how incredible her story is---not simply the events of what happened to her, but how she makes sense of them, which is far more interesting than any of the events of her chaotic, dramatic life story.
Her story is one of persistence and dedication to her cause, but also one of delusion, denial, grandiosity, and more.
My husband read parts of this book and thought it was a fictional work of someone who is pretending to have a psychological disorder, to show this point of view for artistic effect. I am not certain, but I would tend to disagree, as the publishers say that it is autobiographical. I think it is more likely that Denise Martin is courageously giving us a window into the mind of someone struggling with many psychological problems as she attempts to make a difference in the world.
