5 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Teachers and Students Alike.......2007-09-17

I notice that a few reviewers have mentioned they found exercises in the book too easy and it's true that the book is geared toward those who may be recovering from injury and/or are new to yoga. That said, as a yoga instructor and long-time practitioner I've found this book to be a wonderful resource. In fact, some of the poses in the book have become staples in my lesson plans (and in my own practice) because they serve - for beginners and advanced students alike - as excellent warm-up poses to begin opening the body or cool-down poses to release the lower back. In addition, some of the poses shown using a chair or wall as a prop are useful both for beginners unable to do the full pose and (of equal importance!)for intermediate students who have experience with the full pose, but have never learned, or are still working on mastering correct points of alignment, which are integral to gaining the full benefits of the pose. Finally, I've found one set of exercises - aimed at identifying and correcting pelvic torsion (a slight - and common - misalignment in which the left hip point is drawn a bit too forward while the right is pulled back (or vice versa) - that I've found nowhere else and which has elicited a lot of positive feedback from student in classes where I've used it.

A few words to intermediate students: (1) If you're suffering back pain, it's quite likely that the Iyengar-based exercises in this book, rather than other, more "advanced" or novel asanas (poses) will prove to be better tools for dealing with it. (2) If you have a regular, committed yoga practice and it either is not mitigating or is making your back-associate pain worse you may need to take a closer look at your alignment in the poses, particularly if you began doing yoga in a vinyasa, or flow style and have never received, or have only minimal instruction on how to align yourself in different poses.(It may also be a good idea to seek the advice of a doctor.)

Although yoga studios tend to frown on mirrors in classes (for good reason), occasionally practicing in front of a mirror(s) at home - particularly with a book like this one that includes "simple" poses and poses performed seated in a chair, which can be done safely while watching yourself - can be quite helpful in identifying habitual patterns of movement of which you're unaware - many of which stem from a belief that we can go deeper into a pose than our current range of motion and/or strength allows, causing us to sacrifice key points of alignment - ultimately reinforcing the very patterns of movement that are sources of pain and discomfort. You may be (unpleasantly) surprised to find that the pictures of some of these very basic poses - ones you "already know" and have "moved beyond" - look nothing like the reflection in the mirror when you actually see yourself in the poses.

Three other superior yoga books that I suggest (and I own upwards of 30) are (1) for beginners and people with limited range of motion [i.e., lacking flexibility], "The Runner's Yoga Book" by Jean Couch (2) for intermediate students "30 Essential Yoga Poses" by Judith Lasater and (3) for advanced students, teachers and anyone who wants a thorough physiological and anatomical understanding of the mechanics of yoga, "Anatomy of Hatha Yoga", by H. David Coulter.

4 out of 5 stars Very Well Written & Helpful Book; Needs Accompanying DVD.......2007-08-09

Dr. Schatz has written an excellent book on back care, integrating a physician and Yoga teacher's viewpoint. Back physiology and mechanics are well explained and illustrated.

Explaining Yoga postures by text/book is hard and one really needs a teacher in person. Short of that video is helpful. Therefore, I wish Dr. Shaatz would either update the book with DVD/Videos or upload the videos on the Internet on sites like YouTube etc. to make her Yoga for Back Care more practical and useful.

Anybody with chronic back pain/problems will benefit from this book and gain understanding of the back pain; and get therepeutic benefit if they do the Yoga.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful.......2006-08-13

I have scoliosis and this book has been a tremendous resource in understanding and caring for my condition. The book is a good start and it eventually got me interested in taking some yoga classes and exploring some of the different practices. I'm so glad I found this book; yoga has been a positive force in my life for some time now.

5 out of 5 stars Real yoga, really good advice, well written.......2006-08-07

Lots of back pain books provide exercises, but this one takes them directly from the Iyenger Yoga method; Iyenger revolutionized Yoga from the 1960's to the present by applying contemporary knowledge of anatomy and physiology to the traditional and spiritual aspects of yoga. Teachers trained and certified in Iyenger Yoga are a 'cut' above others from my lengthy experience with Yoga practice. That said, dr. Schatz uses Iyenger's methods (Iyenger also wrote the intro) to design a comprehensive program for all types of back and neck problems; she also provides accurate and clear illustrations of the spine structure and related anatomy. The photos are very clear and easy to understand as are the instructions of asanas and restorative poses.. The book is the right length, size and format. Many back problems can be treated. This book offers programs for many of them; also included is a self-analysis of one's own current posture and alignment. This is no quick fix book; the programs she recommends may take a couple of years to 'work' but it's definitely worth it to live a more vigorous, pain reduced or pain free life.

5 out of 5 stars Review by former physiology instructor and past back pain sufferer!.......2006-06-06

This is my favorite book for addressing back pain issues. It presents a great foundation in the basic anatomy of the back and then uses this information to develop the concepts that help people understand why back and neck pain occur and how to correct it.

The book contains progressive exercises and workouts of various lengths that use Iyengar yoga to address back pain. Each exercise is carefully explained and includes good tips on how to perform each correctly. I also like that it provides the rationale for each exercise and important points to focus on while performing each movement.

There are also chapters on specific problems. This is definitely a comprehensive reference and it has helped me a lot with my own back problems. In addition, it is an excellent overall introduction to yoga.

The author is a physician who had back problems herself. She is highly credible and treated her own back problems with the methods described. I recommend this book to anyone interested in an introduction to yoga or wanting to learn more about rehabilitating back and neck problems using yoga.

Finally, if you are looking for another book on this topic "The Pilates Back Book" by Tia Stanmore is also very good. It also starts out more gently and is somewhat more accessible. However, it's not nearly as comprehensive or as detailed in describing the exercises. I own and use both and recommend owning both to people who are serious about understanding and working with back issues. (

Personally, I also found Tai Chi helpful before I was ready to do yoga. However, I don't have a book I would recommend that would be a good standalone resource. If you go this route, it's probably best to find a good teacher who is also a physical therapist or at least has some knowledge of dealing with back and neck related issues.

3 out of 5 stars Workers' rights cannot be based on free markets.......2000-05-05

The author, a noted labor expert, after three decades of union decline contends that most workers essentially have no need to be represented by unions in today's economy. He maintains that most workers "demand" an "individual representation system." But these claims can been seen as contradicting worker experiences.

US workers were finally able to overcome the array of political and economic forces stacked against them with the passage of the Wagner Act in 1935. Unions thereby interjected themselves into the governance of workplaces and forced the substitution of work rules and formal grievance procedures in place of capricious and unilateral employee relations, and in the process gained a measure of industrial justice for employees.

Now, according to Troy, workers don't need those protections. Curiously, the validity and effectiveness of Troy's individual labor relations system is based on the benign and/or self-correcting nature of markets which is a standard argument of laissez-faire capitalists. However, correctly functioning markets require participants who are relatively equal, certainly not subject to coercion like needing a regular paycheck, and can readily obtain adequate information about market workings and opportunities. That requirement is hardly met in US labor markets.

In addition, the rationality and newly found goodwill of managers are supposed to assure workers of fair dealings. Yet the huge consulting industry that guides management efforts in avoiding unionization at nearly all costs goes unmentioned by Troy. Due process in this new world of workplace harmony is the old paternalistic "open door" policy. Here the wise manager aids the employee in solving his personal "problems." This procedure is decidedly not an example of sharing workplace governance. Neutral arbitration is rejected as an unnecessary interference regardless of any enhanced justice possibilities.

Troy seems assured that a firm's investment in employees precludes unfair treatment. He neglects to indicate how wide is the stratum of employees whose value is so great as to be extended that protection. One suspects the coverage would be very narrow.

It should be noted, as the author does not, that the preamble to the Wagner Act states that individual employees are at a decided disadvantage in dealing with employers and in fact do not have actual freedom of contract. In addition a primary argument for the Wagner Act was its redistributive effects in maintaining strong economic demand. To Troy any such redistribution is unsound, whereas a distribution that rewards CEOs at rates hundreds of times greater than for workers is unquestioned as natural.

Troy's contention that workers overwhelming demand individual representation is not consistent with other contemporary literature. A recently published book, "What Workers Want," indicates that a majority of workers want actual representation in dealing with management. While they do not like the adversarialism of union-management dealings, they do not trust management to willingly surrender power in the workplace.

Professor Troy's book accurately notes that all is not well with unions. Beyond the severe decline, many unions exhibit one or more characteristics that are disturbing to workers such as distant and impenetrable bureaucracy, corruption, excessive dues and fees, ineffectiveness, etc. But, however imperfectly, unions have facilitated the voice of workers.

Professor Troy seems to accept the argument that competitiveness in markets supercedes other economic considerations such as workplace fair dealing. But there is nothing sacrosanct about the way markets favor the powerful. The NAFTA and the WTO are mechanisms that alter market balance in favor of investors and corporations. Unions are institutions that attempt to balance power relationships in workplaces as well as various markets.

It is a nineteenth century idea that laissez-faire capitalism is an optimum arrangement. America found out the hard way in the Great Depression just how dubious that idea is. Professor Troy does not make the case for substituting a rather nebulously conceived individual representation system for the collective representation of worker interests. His arguments simply fail to understand the empowerment that unions can bring to workers. Perhaps this book can be read as a reminder as to the fragility of worker rights.

This study utilized MDS analyses to identify the position of overseas golf tourism destinations as perceived by Korean golf tourists. Out of a total of 247 questionnaires collected, 216 questionnaires were used for data analyses. The correspondence analyses were conducted with the use of KYST, PORFIT, and PREFMAP programs. As an example of the results, Australia showed a similarity to Hawaii in perceived image to potential Korean overseas golf tourists. Additionally, results of the PREFMAP analysis reported that Hawaii was perceived to be an ideal destination. The theoretical and managerial implications derived from the analyses are discussed.

In a sequel to Li'l Santa that is every bit as bizarre and grisly and warmhearted as the first, Happy Halloween, Li'l Santa is a completely wordless graphic novel with so much action and adventure, readers won't know what hit them! First, the "li'l" red-suited hero gets a talking-to from his penguin buddy for trying to sneak samples from the his picnic basket. Then he has a chance encounter with a ghastly but friendly creature (a turbaned cross between mummy and skeleton) that causes a bewildered Santa to walk into several trees. Next, he winds up rescuing this fellow from a frozen pond incident, leading to a wild party with all the cheerful demons and ghouls in the mummy-man's coffin-sleigh. As everyone knows, what goes around comes around, so when Santa needs some help later, you know who comes running (and flying and sliming and lurching).

This may be the oddest book around, but it has true charm. Younger children may be alarmed at the beating Santa and his pals keep getting (what with walking into trees and wrangling with evil lumberjack monster-machines), but all's well that ends well. Each page features 14 or 15 frames, ensuring that the plot hops along rapidly, once "readers" get the hang of it. A quirky delight for Halloween or Christmas! (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

            Book Description

In this second silent adventure, LiÕl Santa encounters the many critters of the night who take camp, much to his discomfort, right next to his abode. But the worst monster is an enormous devouring logging machine eating up his forest of Christmas trees around him! Turns out the night critters come quite in handy to fight the fearsome invader...

Happy Halloween, Li'l Santa is a most delightful, original, and lively graphic novel storybook recommended for kids from 8 to 80 and that spins out it's holiday tale entirely in pictures. Each page is divided into sixteen panels that wordlessly move the adventure along, as Li'l Santa wanders into one scrape after another and befriends creatures such as The Abominable Snowman. An energetic, upbeat, and thoroughly entertaining "picture-tale", Happy Halloween, Li'l Santa is the collaborative effort of author Lewis Trondheim, illustrator Thierry Robin, and colorist Isabelle Busschaert.

I love this book. The style is approachable and dynamic, and the ideas are still exciting ten years after the book was published. The authors cover a wide range of topics both historical and contemporary and come from different theoretical stand points. The articles not only focus on composition and performance but also on listenership and the gendered power relationships involved in that. As a first year postgraduate student involved in gay and lesbian studies of music I found this book inspirational and invigorating because of the high quality of scholarship involved. Queering the Pitch is a much more interesting read than several more recent collections of queer musicology because of the strength of the ideas involved but especially energetic and transparent writing styles which avoid the stogyness that musicology can often suffer from.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for an exciting new field.......2000-05-23

Queering the Pitch is the first anthology to be published in the new field of queer musicology (although it does draw from works like Solie's "Musicology and Difference" collection.)

The quality of the fourteen essays here varies greatly. Some, like Philip Brett's "Musicality, Essentialism, and the Closet" are absolutely earthshaking-provacative, well-written, and inspiring. Other essays seem a bit out of place, and show how much work their needs to be done in this field. It occasionally feels as if the editors had to scrape around to find enough material for the collection.

The three editors, all well-known musicologists, are to be commended for this effort. The book is already something of a classic, and has certainly helped to legitimitize this field of inquiry.

            Book Description

When the first edition of Queering the Pitch was published in early 1994, it was immediately hailed as a landmark and defining work in the new field of Gay Musicology. The first collection of its kind, its contributors covered a wide range of subjects from analysis of the work of gay composers to queer readings of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony. Among the contributors were many then-new scholars,--including the late Philip Brett (one of the editors of the first edition), Susan McClary, Jennifer Rycenga, Paul Attinello, and Martha Mockus--who have since become leaders in the field.

In light of the explosion of Gay Musicology since 1994, a new edition of Queering the Pitch is timely and needed. In this new work, the editors are including a landmark essay by Philip Brett on Gay Musicology, its history and scope, which was written for Grove's Dictionary of Music-but only published in a greatly reduced version, because of its strong political approach. The essay itself has become a cause celebre, and this will be its first full appearance in print. Along with this new historical essay, the editors are contributing a new introduction that outlines the changes that have occurred over the last decade as Gay Musicology has grown.

5 out of 5 stars Homosexual scholarship for all.......2007-07-26

This is a tremendous anthology of homosexual scholarship on classical music. Particularly persuasive is the chapter in which Schubert is 'outed' with reference to his 'Unfinished' 8th Symphony. Who could deny that the deviant use of harmony constitutes anything other than overwhelming proof of his sexual inclinations? I whole-heartedly support the author's view that Schubert's body should be exhumed and interred in a specialist gay cemetery. The well-substantiated accusation that Ives' music is 'homophobic' is quite startling and forces one to question whether his music is valid in the more tolerant society of today. This is a most objective foray into music that should be compulsory reading to all.

                Book Description

Contributing a unique perspective to health reform, Negotiating Health Care presents the findings of a large qualitative investigation of the experiences of the chronically ill within today's health care system. The author develops the argument that chronic illness and acute illness are social experiences of a vastly different order that lead to different health care consequences, especially in a health system geared to the "miracle cure." From interviews with chronically ill patients, Thorne discusses the onset of their diseases, handling acute episodes, and their attempts to normalize life. The author also examines the interpersonal experience with health care providers exploring the issues of trust, confidence, and compliance. The institutional experience can, and often does, pose daunting problems for the chronically ill because of organizational and sociocultural issues, health care politics and ideology, and the individual patient's response to the system. In her concluding chapter, Thorne proposes future directions for health care organization, biomedical technology, and social policy. Students and professionals in the fields of nursing, allied health/medical sciences, and human services will find Negotiating Health Care a valuable resource. "This book is highly recommended for all health care professionals and anyone involved in legislation regarding chronic health care on a national basis. The book also could be very useful for lay people who are chronically ill and for their caregivers and families." --Rehabilitation Nursing "Finally, a window is opened to the experience of chronic illness as it exists within the North American health care system. Just in time. Every health care provider and reformer who looks inside will be changed by the reflections of themselves they see. This book is a courageous voice for both the bolder, more conclusive clinical research and for the chronically ill who may yet show us a better way." --William L. Miller, M.D., The University of Connecticut "Although there are a number of texts available on chronic illness, Dr. Thorne's approach to the topic is unique in that it provides a graphic illustration of how the beliefs and values guiding the health care system contribute to problems which the chronically ill encounter in obtaining care. By setting the experience of chronic illness in the broader context of the health care system, the [book] provides some clear guidelines for needed changes, something I have not found elsewhere. . . . This is a valuable piece of work . . . which is a valuable contribution to our understanding of chronic illness and which provides a guide both to practice and to health policy revision." --Lee Walker, R.N., Ph.D., The University of Utah "This extraordinary book provides rich description and unique insights into the illness experience. Data obtained from interviews with 91 informants provides remarkable detail, strong linkages to existing theory, and powerful development of the illness trajectory. The book is well documented, methodologically rigorous, and presented in a refreshing style. Dr. Thorne has written a classic! Negotiating Health Care will become the book of the 90s for anyone interested in providing humanistic care." --Jan Morse, R.N., Ph.D., College of Health and Human Development, The Pennsylvania State University "The book provides a view into the major issues adults with chronic illness experience in obtaining health care, a perspective that is rarely available to those of use who use the health care system mainly for acute problems, or indeed, who are the providers. The book is powerful, intense, and often uncomfortable reading; the 'patients' own words should sensitize all of us who work with the chronically ill. Verbatim accounts of patients' experiences are woven into a lucid and perceptive view of the structure and organization of Canadian health care, which should be read by health policymakers in all the western industrialized countries." --Juliene G. Lipson, Ph.D., F.A.A.N., University of California, San Francisco "Thorne takes a unique approach in providing a graphic illustration of how the beliefs and values guiding the health care system contribute to the problems the chronically ill encounter in obtaining care. . . . Those concerned with the evolving social and health policy in the United States would be well served in reading Negotiating Health Care." --Academic Library Book Review

                  3 out of 5 stars NICE, but...........2007-03-17

The book is ok, but If youre new to the Excel Macro and Programming world, dont buy this book!
I use above average formulas in excel such as left, vlookup, hlookup, right, mid, match, concactenante, and the normal formulas. But i really thought this book could've given me a better insight to excel VBA programming.
I have friends that program and I always see the word "DIM" in their coding, so I expected this book to explain these details, but they actually skipped it. They wrote it directly to an example with no explanation. How can you right code and not know this???
Defenitely for a semi pro programmer.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Very Useful Book.......2007-01-25

I flipped through this book at the bookstore and I really liked the layout so I bought it. At the time I knew next to nothing about Excel programming and I thought this book would get me started, it didn't.

This book can, at best, be used as a quick reference for looking up some basic excel programming methods, but it's definitely not a 'sit down and read' type of book. So if you are new to excel programming and are looking for a book to get you started this is definitely not the one, trust me. I've bought at least 10 different Excel programming books and there are much better ones out there. Such as:

"Excel VBA Programming For Dummies" by John Walkenbach is excellent for beginners.

"Excel 2002 Power Programming with VBA" also by John Walkenbach is probably the best excel programming book out there.

4 out of 5 stars Targets a somewhat niche market of readers.......2006-04-17

This nifty guide book is pretty different from most computer programming books out there, it targets a very specific group of people, namely those who are proficient in Microsoft Office but with little knowledge in VBA. Even more specifically, it is a dictionary for people who are trying to write macros in the fastest way possible, no time is wasted on explaining the fundamentals of VBA or programming in general.

Readers who skim through the book in a bookstore might be decieved into thinking that this book is for newbies due to the abundance of pictures/screenshots scattered throughout the pages. It is not. The book is essentially structured in a manual format with each spread of 2 pages covering a certain function. Neither is there any fluff for the beginner nor are there complex code snippets for the advanced user.

This text should be used primarily as a quick VBA reference book for people who are proficient in MS Excel but looking for quick and dirty ways to churn simple macros.

1 out of 5 stars Not for beginners.......2006-02-06

This book has an audience but I can't figure out who it may be. It certainly is not for beginners. It does a poor job of beginning with and building upon the basics... the KEY to learning and understanding any new language.

I bought this book prior to buying several others on Excel programming, the glaring weaknesses in this book are exposed in a comparison to its brethren.

Oh, and the pictures are too small.

Skip this book, buy Albright's or Walkenbach's instead.

                  JB

4 out of 5 stars No fluff, good for quick work.......2004-07-27

This is a good book for what I used it for, which is a few quick and dirty VBA apps in Excel. Beginners can easily pick it up and go with the information in this book. If you want to get heavier into development, you may want something with a few more code examples, and better explanations as to what is going on. This book is very good however, and presenting information for creating specific projects.

4 out of 5 stars VB programming within the Excel framework.......2007-10-05

Excel is really Visual Basic with a powerful, though specialised, user interface. Where the latter is a spreadsheet. Of course, if you are an Excel user, you likely think of it primarily as a spreadsheet. But the lessons in this book show that Excel can be very flexible, if you are willing to write simple VB programs.

The lessons are formatted as 2 pages each. Brief. Examples include being able to access the file system, to delete files. But most of the examples naturally pertain to manipulating objects within a spreadsheet. Like changing properties of an object. Or creating it in the first place. The pedagogy also includes generous numbers of screen captures, for easier uptake.

The only drawback is that the author's format (or rather this series' format) of explaining each lesson in 2 pages means that more advanced functionality is not described.
