Good, but limited.......2007-09-25
I like this book as there is almost no PC from the early years that escape it. But my biggest issue is I would like to see more background on more PCs, not just a brief list of specs. Very few have any history of any detail and they're the well-knowns, like Commodore and Tandy. Bigger, color photos would be a real plus as well.
Collectible Microcomputers.......2007-06-13
If you are a collector of old microcomputers like myself then this book is a must. It's an affordable reference guide that you'll always be referring to. Personally I'd love to see a colour edition of this book, a more international (rather than US) flavour and I'd like to see the entries per manufacturer in chronological order rather that alphabetical order.
Excellent resource for vintage computer collectors.......2007-05-15
I was very impressed by this book. Lots of information on vintage computers, some quite in depth histories. Very enjoyable read and something you would go back to. Only one gripe I have is purely cosmetic in that it was all black and white photo's only and a fairly uninspiring layout.
Fun book.......2007-04-10
If you are into collecting old computers (mainly the 8bit era), this is a must own. It has the specs and approximate prices for each machine from the first minicomputers to the mid 90's with the Amigas and soforth. Some x86 architecture items, mainly the revolutionary items for any 486/Pentium items since they are ... well the industry standard practically.
I recommend in a heartbeat.

Or, if you just love the history of personal computers, then you'll be very happy with this volume. An excellent coffee table book with loads of great pictures and plenty of well-known and obscure systems. Photos inside are all black and white, but good quality and size. A handy field guide and highly recommended.

A classic, now sadly dated.......2006-07-05
Haddock's valuations were always a little suspect -- he would rank some very common hardware as more valuable than much rarer and more interesting competition that would, in reality, cost a collector a lot more. However, the book was written before the era of eBay, and I suspect he was guessing at a lot of the prices.
In the years since it was written, valuations have moved in surprising ways. Old Apple hardware has appreciated more than old Atari hardware, for example. CP/M machines don't seem to have done as well as others. Haddock, of course, reflects none of this.
The book is still valuable for its concise descriptions of old systems and peripherals, and for the photographs it provides. I know of nothing newer that's anywhere near as good. Perhaps somebody will produce a new edition of Haddock's guide some day.
Great book for beginners, one of a kind in a new area.......2000-11-30
This is the book that got me started. The book has pictures of the computer, a brief history, technical information for that computer, the listing price at the time it was introduced, and the current value for the machine. The author also added some interesting facts and trivia to each of the listings about that particular machine. Although slightly out of date, most definitely it is essential to the beginner.

Best book on the market.......2006-01-07
I'm a professor at a large state university. On the rare occasions when I teach this course, I always order the Edmonds book.
I believe the purpose of introductory or fundamental financial accounting is to teach students how to read and use finanacial statements. If used properly by the instructor, this is one of only two books on the market (the other is for MBA students) that can be used for this purpose.
I whole-heartedly endorse the horizontal model used by Edmonds, et. al. Most text book writers use a form of it. I even use it in my writings.
Some students want to learn debits and credits. In my opinion, this is best left to technical courses in accounting for those interested in the nuts and bolts.
However, for anyone who want to get something long-lasting from the course, this text book combined with the right professor, will be about the only option.
If this or any text book is used to teach technical aspects at the fundamental level, you won't have a good experience. Techinical aspects are best covered in Intermediate Accounting.

This text is abysmal. It is riddled with errors and omissions, gives incomplete examples, and presents information unsequentially. It relies too much and for too long on the horizontal model without practical applicatoin to journals and statements. If your college uses this text (as Medaille College and Finger Lakes Community College currently do) run away!
Fortunately, many of the gaps are filled in by the PowerPoint® presentations they make available on their support site: http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072472960/student_view0/ Note that these presentations are more extensive than the ones on the Topic Tackler CD that comes with the book. You must download these presentations if you want to have a chance with this book.
A good book with the right instructor.......2002-08-02
I've read the reviews stating that this is a confusing book. I disagree completely. Although the author does not immediately delve into traditional T-accounts, the introduction of the "horizontal model" serves as a good foundation for building the awareness of the accounting equation that should be second nature BEFORE tackling T-accounts. The text's preface states: "A horizontal financial statements model replaces the accounting equation as the predominant teaching platform. The model enables students to VISUALIZE THE SIMULTANEOUS EFFECTS OF A SINGLE BUSINESS EVENT on the income statement, balance sheet, and statement of cash flows." I felt as though this methodology was very effective for my learning style. Recording transactions in T-accounts came almost as second nature after mastering the horizontal model.
The "Working Papers" (a separate workbook) makes doing the assigned problems easy by providing a ready-made template for each problem. If you've had to draw your own T-accounts or your own journal in a notebook before, you will definitely appreciate this.
This text serves as a good introduction to the skills necessary to master financial accounting.
Most Confusing Accounting Textbook On The Market Today........2000-10-27
This Book begins using something called horizontial statments and then in chapter 5 switches to regular T accounts thus confusing students completely, I have yet to find a student that tells me the book is easy to understand or useful. It would be helpful if there was a solutions manual. Our school will change books next semester. It's not even good enough to make dorm furniture.

This book is an excellent book to go with a Financial Accounting course. Everything is laid out in plain English, and shows you in diagrams and models exactly how each kind of transaction works. I recommend for professors everywhere to adopt this book for their clases. I'm glad mine did!

Over the last few years, anisotropy has become a "hot topic" in seismic exploration and seismology. It is now recognised that geological media deviate more or less from isotropy. This has consequences for acquisition, processing and interpretation of seismic data and also helps determine the cause of anisotropy and adds to our knowledge concerning the structure of the medium at scales beyond the resolution of the seismic method.
This volume addresses the theoretical foundations of wave propagation in anisotropic media at an easily accessible level. The treatment is not restricted to exploration seismology. The book commences with fundamental material and covers the description of wave propagation in anisotropic conditions by means of slowness and wave surfaces. It continues to explore the theory of elasticity, the interaction of elasticity and material symmetry and conditions imposed by the stability of the medium. Wave propagation in general anisotropic solids are discussed referring in particular to singular and longitudinal directions. Slowness and wave surfaces in transversely isotropic media and in the planes of symmetry of orthorhombic media is presented and then moves on to wave propagation in orthorhombic media by means of "squared slowness surfaces". The latter part of the book deals with layer-induced anisotropy showing how a particular internal structure of a medium leads to anisotropy and how much of this structure can be recovered by "inversion" of the modelling algorithm. A few fundamental aspects of exploration seismology are also discussed.
The final chapter discusses how concepts which were developed by Kelvin, but only recently understood, can be utilised to determine the symmetry class and orientation of an elastic medium.

Patrick Dennis, not Nabakov, but never a dull moment. All of his books have cruel depictions of all those types of people we love to hate, and watching the train-wrecks of their ambitious lives are never unraveled with more hilarity. Even the children are evil and wonderful, except little Patrick, of course.

I'm sure like most of us, you loved the Rosaline Russell film adaptation of Auntie Mame. This book does you one better, and has more stories, more scandal and more laughs then the movie (although I must say, that Rosalind Russell did a superb job, and I saw her face the entire time I was reading this book!).
Told in flashbacks while Patrick Dennis compares Mame to a character in a magazine article he was reading, each chapter is it's own little story, which makes it great for the beach or bedtime. Although quite tame by today's standards, the scandelous stories that never made it into the movie version, add a little more spice to Mame, and will have you chuckling for hours (Mame's seduction of one of Patrick's college friends is a particular favorite).
Definitely a must read, even if you have never seen the movie. The pacing and the characters will make you want to get the movie that everyone reviewing this book is talking about (do NOT get the Lucille Ball version - no matter how big of a fan you are. You'll thank me later).

and so is this gem. Although later incarnations remain basically true to the original plot, the original book has several other incidents which are as hilarious and charming as anything filmed or played in the perhaps-more-famous stage and movie versions.
The book reads like a loosely-connected group of related short stories. Though considered risque in its time, it now seems more nicely naughty. This is a fun book where pomposity never wins and the people with good hearts come out on top at the end. In several passages I positively guffawed. If you are easily embarrassed, don't read this at Starbuck's. If you need your heart lightened, put your hands on a copy of this as soon as possible.
Permanence At Rest And Motion .......2005-11-16
Auntie Mame is proteus but within the whirling kaleidoscope of changes is an essential core. She is as sophisticated as Paris and as simple as the fields of Nebraska. She'd be an infuriating goddess to worship because she would laugh at the worship. Her energy is neither creative or destructive. It's a matter of the kind of motion that illuminates by charm. Her love would be disastrous if she was one of Shakespeare's characters but she isn't. She's an American original, a note of real Americana; a flashing off of the spark of the True America denied and fear by heavy fundamentalists in religion, politics, and art. She is wit itself because she knows how to retire. She might have committed enough sins to damn any other human being but she wont ever be damned because of her invincible ignorance - a facet of her compassionate id. Auntie Mame is like Bugs Bunny - that other creature too anarchical to be an anarchist. Auntie Mame knows no super-ego. She does not quest for freedom because she already is free.
