Customer Reviews:
Very Easy to Read.......2004-12-16
I am a first year PA student. I find Current a much better reference than Cecils Textbook of Medicine. It has quick easy to read sections on many diseases. The disease passages are well labelled with a few "Essentials of Diagnosis" at the top. Then the passage describes etiology, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings and treatment. Overall, a great reference.
Another must have for the primary provider.......2004-06-05
As a military medical provider that moves all the time, I have to be discriminate about what amount of books I carry with me. This book, along with Habif's Dermatology, is always on the top of the packing list. From ENT complaints to infectious diseases, this book is an excellent reference. It is easy to read, regularly updated, and comprehensive.
Terrific.......2004-01-28
I was a chief resident at one of the top internal medicine programs and widely recommended this book to both students and residents. This is a clear, concise and up to date text on the fundamentals of internal medicine.

Book Description
A leading economic journalist explains why Washington's responses to globalization have created a global worker surplus that undermines both American workers and those in developing nations.
As evidenced by the WTO riots in Seattle in December 1999, there is a volatile debate among Americans over how the new world economy affects our standards of living and our country's chances for future prosperity. With giant multinational companies based in the U.S. and other wealthy countries transferring ever more factories and labs to poorer countries, the fear is that slave-wage workers overseas are undermining the bargaining power of labor in the industrialized world.
In this book Alan Tonelson explains how a competition has emerged in which countries with the weakest workplace safety laws, the lowest taxes, and the toughest unionization laws win investment from American and European countries. Tonelson argues that this "race to the bottom" of labor standards has been the driving force behind the decline of American living standards for the past quarter century, and, as we have already begun to see, will cause even bigger problems for the worldwide economy as it continues.
Tonelson analyzes how the entry of such population giants as China, India, and Brazil into the global market have added fuel to the eroding labor standards. He reveals how an ever larger share of the foreign competition faced by American laborers is hitting not just fields such as apparel and toys, but many of America's highest wage industries such as aerospace and software. And he describes how the reeducation and retraining programs that political leaders say is the remedy to the problem will do nothing to help most Americans cope with competition from the global workforce.
A lively, provocative guide to the new global economy, The Race to the Bottom fills the gap of hard evidence in readable form in the globalization debate, providing the guidebook that American workers have been waiting for, and the indictment that our economic and policy establishments have been dreading.
Customer Reviews:
Dated would like to see a new updated edition.......2007-01-02
I'd like to see this book be updated so that it addresses current conditions, as it is now quite dated. Many of the premises have not come to pass, although some have. The global economy is booming, but how is the U.S. economy really doing considering the savings rate in the U.S. was below 0 last year and the trade deficit is so large? Unemployment in the U.S. is down, but what is the nature of the jobs workers in the U.S. are doing now, in comparison to the nature of those jobs when the book was first written? What predictions have come to pass and which ones have not come to pass?
Real free trade is based on comparative advantage, not absolute advantage and offsets.......2006-01-17
Tonelson has done an excellent job of empirically demonstrating the irreparable harm being done to the American industrial manufacturing sector, resulting from the pseudo-free trade argument that currently masquerades by the name of globalization. The entire globalization argument rests on an appeal to absolute advantage(for example,American firms should locate their factories and production facilities where labor costs are the lowest).Free trade is based on comparative advantage, not absolute advantage.American firms are free to locate production facilities in foreign countries as long as the output produced from these facilities is used to supply the foreign market. The output can't be shipped back to the home market without violating the basic rules of comparative advantage.Any requirement by a foreign country that ,in order for American firms to locate production facilities in that country, the American firms must hand over or share their technological breakthroughs, inventions, patents,or innovations involves a direct violation of the theory of trade between counties based on the existing comparative advantages that exist in both countries industries.Unfortunately,Tonelson does not spell this out clearly, although his discussions on pp.97-98 demonstate that the correct definition of comparatve advantage has been replaced by one that has no connection to the meaning of the term as used by Adam Smith or David Ricardo.I have deducted one star for this omission.
Kaleem needs and education!.......2005-12-04
Kaleem 9984....LOL....THIS dudes a hypocrit! First of all...a foreigner (who's probably an Indian programmer) is not a impartial reviewer. I am a programmer and work with numerous foreigners...BTW they are not as talented as rumor has it. They frequently lie on their resumes to get into positions and...as evidenced by the exporation of NUMEROUS PROGRAMMING jobs back to India...they are not loyal to this country or any corporation that hired them on the H1b visa (a political bill that was fronted by american corporations). This book however...is right on target.
Kaleem should speak in terms of the substance of the book..and not of other reviewers who may differ from his opinion. I believe, as many americans, that we should no longer import items from other countries...we don't need them.
Whats wrong with amazon.......2005-11-11
Whats wrong with Amazon how could they put review by this person - " John W. Runyan III "Too much time on my hands " in spotlight. It's clearly evident he is one of those people who have some small town mentality, come with a preconceived opinion which will never change and probably didnt read the book and wrote a review.
By the way talking of indian programmers, I am a development manager and work with lots of them. They are helping our economy in many ways. I seen that most americans do not go to school, do not have strong mathematical background, do not have strong analytical skills, this is where the indians are useful. Most of them I see have their Master's degree and often have strong engineering backgrounds. If you are a programmer you would know how useful these skills can be. In my experience americans are generally good with the quality-assurance, management level or business side of work. Leave the hard-core intense programming to the foreigners, they seem to do it better.
No better book for understanding the truth about "free trade.......2004-08-05
I have ready many books about globalization and its effects, but Alan Tonelson's "The Race to the Bottom: Why a Worldwide Worker Surplus and Uncontrolled Free Trade are Sinking American Living Standards" is the ONLY book to explain the truth behind globalization. If the US public understood just simple facts, like the difference between producer goods and consumer goods, it would be clear why the US has the most massive trade deficit in history; and the US public would demand that congress act to stop the fast track legislation given to the president. (This is being carried out now by Bush, but was negotiated under Clinton. In other words, both parties are complicit in the destruction of the US middle class.)
As Tonelson says, "Current globalization policies have plunged the great majority of U.S. workers into a great worldwide race to the bottom, into a no-win scramble for work and livelihoods with hundreds of millions of their already impoverished counterparts across the globe. In addition, by sapping the earnings power of U.S. consumers, who are almost single-handedly propping up the world economy despite their sagging earnings, continuing this race could all too easily bring the global financial house of cards tumbling down."
Tonelson doesn't merely make a statement like this, he proves it with expert economic analysis that he explains clearly to the lay public.
Read this book and act on it, before the U.S. middle-class is further eroded.

Book Description
In this age of globalization, countries and corporations are under increasing pressure to adopt and follow international labor standards. This book provides the most thorough empirical assessment to date of the impact of international regulation on labor standards and conditions, and critically analyzes the common race-to-the-bottom view that globalization and international competition can only further degrade labor standards.
The authors examine current standards and regulations, along with recent proposals to compel developing countries to adopt labor standards. They also consider other mechanisms for advancing labor conditions, such as lowering barriers to migration, increasing foreign aid, and encouraging more rapid economic growth. In addition, the book presents a complete description and appraisal of current voluntary corporate codes of conduct, and concludes with a detailed evaluation of the change in labor conditions in Mexico since the adoption of more open trade policies in 1986.

I first time I read this book was 5 years ago. I still use phrases and words from this book that others find hillarious. If you are in sales, management, or just a person who needs a new twist on everyday phrases this is the book for you. I also recommend this book for all those who are moving to Texas, it will help you to understand the people and the culture better.

This book has it all!.......2006-09-20
This a good book for hardcore Beach Boys fans only. So much variety from SMiLE to the Brian Wilson/Andy Paley sessions to Holland to Good Surfing, Hello God! and unknown insights in the different areas of the group's career. Happy reading!
a treasure trove.......2004-06-15
Even having read several books and anthologies on the Beach Boys before, there are pieces in here that I had never even heard of. For fans only, of course, but fans should treaasure it.
Comprehensive & Insightful.......2000-01-01
Solid chapters on all aspects of the group, its troubles, controversies, triumphs, from the most noted Beach Boys scholars (Nick Kent, David Felton, David Leaf, Timothy White, Dominic Priore, Tom Nolan, Jules Siegal, Kingsley Abbott), of the last 30 years. A bit detailed but also designed to be a fun read. Diehard fans and new recruits will both dig it.
Lots of behind the scenes scoop from every era of the band........1998-12-13
A superbly edited collection of a few dozen features, interviews and editorials that serve as an excellent primer to the Smile-era Beach Boys, as well insights into the early years and Brian's solo daze as well. With reviews. Very good value; 4/5.
Book Description
An unscrupulous Englishman had the notion for a company that would establish a lucrative trade in silver and spices between England and the Americas. What the investors didn't know was that the South Sea Company barely owned a ship. In this gripping account, Malcolm Balen reveals the true story of how a simple stock-share scheme became a Dickensian web of political and financial intrigue that threatened to overturn two monarchies and topple the British government. Set in the mazy back alleys of the newly inaugurated financial districts of 1720s London and Paris, The King, the Crook, and the Gambler is a lively, fast-paced, and surprisingly epic history of how the South Sea Bubble escalated into a catastrophe that made the fortunes of few and the ruin of many -- and has proved the model for every financial bubble since.
Customer Reviews:
lots left out.......2005-01-21
This book takes a seldom covered but interesting period of history and provides both an excellent and inadequate coverage of events. In some aspects, such as John Law and the Mississipi Company, the formation of the South Sea Company and in particular the political machinations following the burst, the book exceeds expectations. Unfortunately in other areas such as the demise of the company and how the government handled the financial reprecusions on the national debt, which was the entire basis of the project, on is left wanting more.

Book Description
For the "conspiracy theorist" in all of us--an eye-opening survey of conspiracies from biblical times to today.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2005-01-27
Mr. Jeffers has written a fascinating book that captures 100 conspiracies stretching from the beginning of time (Adam & Eve) all the way up to more recent ones (Enron, the snipers in DC, etc.) Each encapsulated vignette is highly readable and gives details of the background of each conspiracy, not too much, but enough to whet your appetite to investigate the story further.
Although Jeffers political viewpoint edges his way into the mix (he's obviously a conservative, given his preclusion to disparage Communists, but to either tone down or even dismiss anything that might reflect badly on conservatives and Repubicans), but this does not generally detract from the overall stories much.
It doesn't cover every thing, of course, or the volume would most likely be unmanageable to even pick up, much less read. The author doesn't spend much time with the more esoteric theories that abound among the counterculture (only one piece deals with aliens ["Aliens Among Us"]). given this, its probably not the ideal book for the conspiracy theorists, but for just general knowledge it is worth the price.

Hilary Spurling's masterful biography The Unknown Matisse mentioned the little-known story of Thérèse Humbert, the woman who brought financial disgrace on the great artist's family. In La Grande Thérèse, she devotes an entire book--slim though it is--to this fascinating subject. A hundred years ago the fabulously wealthy Thérèse Humbert and her husband lived like royalty on a fashionable street in Paris, where they employed Matisse's parents-in-law as servants. Thérèse let it be known that she had had an even wealthier American lover, and she paid for her extravagant lifestyle by borrowing money against the legacy he'd left her. But his children disputed the will, she claimed, and the subsequent lawsuits dragged on for years. Meanwhile the Humberts lived it up, socializing with the great and the good and running up debts all the while. In this wittily piquant morality tale, Spurling describes the spectacular rise and fall of a cunning French peasant girl with a wicked imagination and irresistible powers of persuasion. Thérèse died in disgrace and without a penny, but her hoax had fooled an entire society. As told by Spurling, her story is as rich and entertaining as anything by Dickens or Zola. --Lilian Pizzichini
Book Description
La Grande Thérèse is the true story of a scandal that nearly destroyed the French Third Republic.
A hundred years ago Thérèse Humbert was one of the most powerful women in France; her salon was the center of Parisian life, and her wealth--as the assumed illegitimate daughter of an American billionaire--was fabled. She lived life on a grand scale and was the toast of Paris. But Thérèse was not who she claimed to be. Her lifestyle, her history, and, most important, her fortune--all were an elaborate hoax. When her con was finally exposed, thousands of small investors and creditors, including the in-laws of the artist Henri Matisse, were completely ruined. Thérèse was tried and sentenced to five years' hard labor. When she was released from prison, she vanished, and the fantastic story of her life was mostly hushed up, because it has disgraced so many wealthy and important people.
Hilary Spurling has done meticulous research into the life of Thérèse Humbert. La Grand Thérèse is the remarkable story of the spectacular rise and fall of a French peasant girl with an extraordinary imagination and irresistible powers of persuasion.
Customer Reviews:
A Short Fast Very Interesting Read.......2006-11-19
The story of a lady living far beyond her traditional means but with the extraordinary capacity to persuade people to give her money. The surprising thing is how long her scam lasted until she was finally caught, investigated, and sentenced to five years hard labour.
This is a short fast read, but tells a little known story with insight and humor. Ms. Spurling seems to write like a journalist withgreat attention to detail but keeping the story moving right along.
Great Story, Mediocre Writing.......2003-06-04
Who was Thérèse Humbert? She was part Heidi Fleiss, part Frank Abagnale, part Don Juan, part politician, part Nelson Rockefeller, part Jackie O, part social Niccolo Machiavelli and part dumb lucky.
The tale of Thérèse Humbert's ability to build a career of fame and fortune out of completely nothing is better than Spurling's ability to tell it. A better writer would taken this intriguing story and made it into a great book.
To credit Spurling, she did her research well, but she writes with the method of a common feature journalist. The story is strong enough and compelling enough to keep any reader interested.
The story, in the end of it all, is a historic tragedy -- a sad docudrama put to print. Quickly read, it totals roughly 150 pages with ample leading and margins.

Another scandal of the Third Republic........2002-08-04
I am interested in the Third Republic period of France, and this book detailed another scandal from that period. The book details the life of Therese Daurignac who married a son of the founder of the Republic. It details how Humbert, his son Theodore, and his wife committed a fraud on the French nation by pretending to be rich when in fact they were peasants with no money. Eventually, their scheme of borrowing money to pay other creditors collasped, and Therese and her husband were sent to prison.
If there is a criticism of this book, it is the brevity of it. 132 pages cannot bring to life how thousands of people were cheated out of their money, so that Therese could live the good life. For other books about scandals in the Third Republic, read Prisoners of Honor, The Dreyfus Affair by David Levering Lewis and The Panama Affair by Maron J. Simon.
Short and disappointing.......2001-03-20
The book doesn't take long to read, but I found it inadequate to tell what is an intriguing story. Its chronolgy leaves something to be desired, and I at least would have appreciated more footnotes, more explanation of the importance of the historical figures who are involved in the swindle, and a more documentary-like account. In my (1958) edition of the Encyclopedia American there is a one-paragraph account of The Humbert Swindle, but in my (1940) edition of the Brittanica I find no mention of the affair. Is this because it involved people who were Dreyfusards rather than anti-Dresfusards? I really think this swindle deserves a better book, tho I suppose Hilary Spurling will say that she has told us all she could find on it. But in view of the extensive press coverage I find that hard to believe.
Read the reviews instead - the book's not much longer.......2001-02-27
Having looked forward to reading this book, I was rather disappointed. There's not much more to Spurling's brief story than what you'll gather from reading the editorial and/or customer reviews. In my opinion, it could all have been covered in her Matisse book, if not in a footnote, then in a two or three page appendix. If you continue to be curious, I'd recommend trying the public library before spending your money here.

Perfect for Paranoid Cocktail Party Conversation.......1997-10-19
An ideal primer for those who don't have the time to read the vast volume of conspiracy literature. This book will not only introduce you to perennial conspiracy favorites involving JFK, the CIA, UFOs, Marilyn Monroe, and Jim Morrison but also more obscure conspiracies. There's that dead reporter in the bathtub. He was working on something called the Octopus file involving stolen software and arms smuggling. And what about those machines in the polling booth? Are they really counting your vote? There's the "Fighting Quaker" who stopped a cabal of American fascists from overthrowing FDR. Who really did the killings at Jonestown? Is fluoride not a plot to steal our precious bodily fluids but to sell us more candy?
You get a briefing on 50 conspiracies and suggestions for further reading, so, the next time someone at a party begins to go on about their favorite conspiracy (and doesn't everyone have at least one?), you'll be able to look them square in the eye and say, "Well, I have a theory

Great refresher.......2004-05-07
I love that the author was able to fit so much into so few pages. If I had to carry my old math books from college, I would have to hire a chiropractor.
It's important to point out that this isn't really the text to learn math from; however, it's a great little refresher that's to the point. So if you're rusty, get this book... if this is all new to you, I'd look into more indepth books.
Terrific Book!.......2003-08-13
This book is terrific. The word "fast" in the title hints that you are only going to get a superficial overview of various topics, but this is not the case: you actually come away with an UNDERSTANDING of the topics. The chapter on interpolation is a case in point... I came away being able to derive cubic interpolants, which means that I UNDERSTOOD cubic interpolants. The discussion on quaternions paved the way for me to be able to use them, and the chapter on Bezier curves and patches also gave me an excellent foundation on which to begin using them in OpenGL. In short, I guess this is just one of those magical books in which the author knows how to explain complex subjects in a simple, direct manner. This book is excellent, and I heartily recommend it.
Concise, tight mathematics reference........2001-11-30
First off, here is what you should expect when buying this book: it's a mathematical quick-reference book, and as such, it contains absolutely no code. What it does contain is background information and formulas for a bunch of the most common situations you'll encounter in computer graphics.
This book covers a lot of ground in relatively few pages, making it a tight read. It moves through Algebra, Trig, and Geometry, along the way covering such topics as 2D and 3D transforms, perspective, and Beziers. Most of the topics in the book are explained in sufficient detail in a small amount of space. The author makes great and liberal use of diagrams and pictures, which I find particularly helpful to understanding the material since math isn't one of my strong points.
There are also straightforward examples that demonstrate the mathematical principles, although there is usually only one or two examples per topic. This can be difficult if, like me, you have problems "getting it" without lots of examples to chew on.
As a software engineer, I enjoy figuring out how things work. And in that respect, this book is great. I have some experience dabbling in OpenGL, and I've read several other computer graphics texts that were laden with code examples but lacking in adequate explanations of the math being used. I have also read basic math books that were not geared towards computer programming topics, which made application and transfer of the mathematical threory difficult. This book filled the gap for me, taking me from thinking things like "Hey, look what I can do with OpenGL" to "Hey, I know how OpenGL is doing that!!" Well, maybe I don't know *exactly* how OpenGL works behind the scenes, but because of this book I have a much better understanding of basic computer graphics.
Highly recommended, especially if you don't have a strong math or computer science background.
