Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment.
Mind you, Dexter's the good guy in this story.
Adopted at the age of four after an unnamed tragedy left him orphaned, Dexter's learned, with help from his pragmatic policeman father, to channel his "gift," killing only those who deal in death themselves. But when a new serial killer starts working in Miami, staging elaborately grisly scenes that are, to Dexter, an obvious attempt at communication from one monster to another, the eponymous protagonist finds himself at a loss. Should he help his policewoman sister Deborah earn a promotion to the Homicide desk by finding the fiend? Or should he locate this new killer himself, so he can express his admiration for the other's "art?" Or is it possible that psycho Dexter himself, admittedly not the most balanced of fellows, is finally going completely insane and committing these messy crimes himself?
Despite his penchant for vivisection, it's hard not to like Dexter as his coldly logical personality struggles to emulate emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring, unremarkable human being. Breakout author Jeff Lindsay's plot is tense and absorbing, but it's the voice of Dexter and his reactions to the other characters that will keep readers glued to Darkly Dreaming Dexter, as well as making it one of the most original and highly recommended serial killer stories in a long time. --Benjamin Reese
Book Description
Meet Dexter, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing . . . a monster who cringes at the site of blood . . . a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likable: he only kills bad people.
Dexter Morgan isn’t exactly the kind of man you’d bring home to Mom. Though he’s playful and has a wonderfully ironic sense of humor, Dexter’s one character flaw (his proclivity for murder) can be off-putting. But at heart Dexter is the perfect gentleman, supportive of his sister, Deb, a Miami cop, and interested only in doing away with people who really deserve his special visit. Dex is quite good-looking but totally indifferent to (and, frankly, a bit puzzled by) the attentions paid to him by women. Despite the fact that he can’t stand the sight of blood, he works as a blood-spatter analyst for the Miami police department, a job that allows him to keep tabs on the latest crimes and keep an eye open for his next quarry.
Dexter’s well-organized life is suddenly disrupted when a second, much more visible serial killer appears in Miami. Dex is intrigued, even delighted, by the fact that the other killer appears to have a style reminiscent of his own. Yet he can’t help but feel that the mysterious new arrival is not merely invading his turf, but reaching out to him as well. This new killer seems to be doing more than copying Dexter—he seems to be saying, “Come out and play.” Dexter’s secret life makes for a lonely existence . . . even a lovable monster can be intrigued by the prospect of finding a friend.
Introducing one of the most witty and original narrators in years, Jeff Lindsay’s Darkly Dreaming Dexter is a fresh, surprising, and brilliantly executed novel that is sure to receive wide acclaim.

A fast but engaging read.......2007-10-15
I discovered "Dexter" through word of mouth about the Showtime series based on the title character. I watched the whole first season (12 hours) in two days. I ordered the book shortly thereafter.
"Darkly Dreaming Dexter" is fairly short and a fast read, but it is well written and an interesting glimpse into the soul of a psychopath. A psychopath with a code, but a psychopath nonetheless.
Overall the TV show is better, in my opinion, due to the development of multiple story lines (the main plot diverges somewhat, as well) and periphery characters, but the book provides a far more detailed look at the inner workings of Dexter himself. Thus, the show is made even better after reading the book. Even if you don't watch the show, though, the book is a very worthwhile read.
Excellent quick read!.......2007-10-04
Love Jeff Lindsay! He's my new favorite...used to be David Wiltse & Thomas Harris...no more! (But try David Wiltse if you haven't - I recommend starting with Close to the Bone) :) "Dexter" books are a very quick read, but that's okay...with this being a new show on Showtime I'm sure he's gonna be cranking these out @ warp speed, but the quality will not suffer, no doubt. Like Wiltse, he's one of those authors that grab you with the first paragraph and you can't put it down until your finished! AAAAA+++++ Catch DEXTER on Showtime if you haven't already!
Darkly Dreaming Dexter.......2007-10-01
The book arrived in perfect condition in a timely manner, but just wasn't for me. It was interesting but I was expecting something a little different. However, if you like dry, macabre humor, this is the book for you!
A good friend without human feelings.......2007-09-24
Dexter is a sympathetic character who happens not to have normal human feelings. Moreover, he harbors the Dark Passenger deep in his psyche, and his other persona is a viciouse, libidinal killer. Despite all of this, Dexter is an engaging and interesting person who you will want to get to know.. as long as he's only in a book. Excellent writing, humorous and dark.
DEXTER IS DELIRIOUSLY DELIGHTFUL!.......2007-09-23
Darkly Dreaming Dexter is the first in the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. The series is a firsthand account of America's first "likable" serial killer. Dexter only kills bad people...and his point of view is so original that it's impossible to not have a fun read.
The story focuses around the mysterious Ice Truck Killer who kills people by disassembling them piece-by-piece. At the same time he's engaged Dexter in a clever game of serial-killing one-ups-manship. Will Dexter save the day before someone close to him dies...by his own hand?
The Dexter character has also translated well to the Showtime series which is a great example of black comedy done to perfection. The novel and the series do share many similarities and some important differences (character deaths, unexplored plotlines). Thus you can read Dexter and watch Dexter and still get the maximum amount of entertainment value. This is a great character who hopefully will have a very long shelf life.

Book Description
During World War II, factories across America retooled for wartime production, and unprecedented labor opportunities opened up for women and minorities. In We, Too, Are Americans, Megan Taylor Shockley examines the experiences of the African American women who worked in two capitols of industry--Detroit, Michigan, and Richmond, Virginia--during the war and the decade that followed it, making a compelling case for viewing World War II as the crucible of the civil rights movement.
As demands on them intensified, the women working to provide American troops with clothing, medical supplies, and other services became increasingly aware of their key role in the war effort. A considerable number of the African Americans among them began to use their indispensability to leverage demands for equal employment, welfare and citizenship benefits, fair treatment, good working conditions, and other considerations previously denied them.
Shockley shows that as these women strove to redefine citizenship, backing up their claims to equality with lawsuits, sit-ins, and other forms of activism, they were forging tools that civil rights activists would continue to use in the years to come.

Book Description
3 of Mozart’s most brilliant piano concertos in authoritative two-piano playing editions.
Book Description
This guide to Mozart's two most popular piano concertos--the D minor, K. 466, and the C major, K. 467 (the so-called "Elvira Madigan")--presents the historical background of the works, placing them within the context of Mozart's compositional and performance activities at a time when his reputation as both composer and pianist was at its peak. The special nature of the concerto, as both a form and genre, is explored through a selective survey of some of the approaches that various critics have taken in discussing Mozart's concertos. The concluding chapter discusses a wide range of issues of interest to modern performers.

Relevant in its day, but "is now quite dated". .......2007-01-29
"Is now quite dated" is how these Mork & Mindy generation authors refer to most of the series that pre-date their viewing era. At the time this book was published there probably wasn't anything else available with this information, but now just about all the contents of this book can be easily found on the internet (on websites that most likely took their info from this book.) If you can find a copy for a few bucks, go for it. Otherwise save your money.
Leaves much to be desired.......2003-08-10
While this may be an useful quick reference book for TV fans or researchers, the information it provides is far from complete. Episode synopsis are too brief (often just a couple of lines), helpful only if you already know and remember very well the plot of the episodes you've seen and want to identify them by title. Directors and writers of each episode are in most cases not listed. The lists of guest actors are usually incomplete, and the names of the characters played by each actor are not listed. No airing dates are given, and the episodes are not even separated by season -- you just can't tell what season each episode belongs to! In many cases it is very easy, today, to gather all that information from fan sites in the internet. Considering, however, that this book was written in the 80's, when there was no internet, some credit must be given to its authors for what must have been a painstaking research. But now it is badly in need of revising and enlarging.

A FOUNTAIN OF CLASSIC COMEDY TV INFORMATION.......2001-02-08
This is a must have for anyone who enjoys those oldie but goodie tv comedies. My one disappointment was that it did not contain an episode guide for one of my favorite TV sitcoms, "I Married Joan". It's almost impossible to find out anything about that show and it would have been great if it had been included in this somewhat exhaustive work. My request to the writers is to include this info in the next edition (if there is one and I hope there is). There were others I would have like to have seen included too, but Joan was the really missed one.
This volume is a must for TV writers and avid TV comedy fans.......1997-08-08
As a TV Sitcom writer/producer I was particularly enthralled by this labor-intensive work. It has excellent "TV-Guide-style" synopses of the most popular syndicated shows, and even some cult favorites we may never see again. Not only is it an excellent record, often reflecting "the signs of the times", and superior single-volume reference work, going through the various story lines is a great springboard for ideas for new sitcom stories. My only wish is if they were a) more thorough with the credits for writers of episodes in particular, and b)they churned out a new edition. It's been over 10 years, boys
