Book Description

Featuring more than 250 photographs and 50 anatomical drawings, Deep Tissue Massage is the standard guide to the essentials of touch, biomechanics, and positioning options for a multitude of strategies to treat all major conditions encountered in a bodywork practice.

The book is divided into three sections. “Fundamentals” covers basic skills of palpation, explaining the deeper layers of the body and presenting detailed instruction on working with these layers to release tension. This section gives clear information on the proper use of knuckles, fist, forearms, and elbows in preventing injury to the therapist. “Strategies” offers more precise protocols and treatment plans for the entire body with emphasis on client positioning options to stretch muscles rather than just kneading tissues. “Caveats” details areas in which the practitioner needs to exercise caution.

Deep Tissue Massage presents a wealth of information in a way the therapist can immediately utilize. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a preface to the new edition, a foreword, an index, a Suggested Reading list, and extended sections on integrating deep-tissue massage into bodywork practice and the psychology of treating injuries.

5 out of 5 stars A must have..................2007-09-05

Anyone interested in therapeutic massage can benifit heavily from this manual, written with experience, wisdom and love. Not only is the anatomy information great, there are excellent practical techniques, as well as some of the best "Deep Tissue Philosophy" on applying it to a successfull practice. I have been a practicing massage therapist for over a dozen years, as well as teaching Progressive Deep Tissue classes across Southern California, and recommend this book to my students as the best book on the subject they could invest in. Art is the man!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Improved.......2007-06-10

While the text hasn't changed much, this new edition is a significant improvement. The photos and drawings are much clearer, the layout and design is livelier, even the paper is brighter. And this new edition includes an index and is key referenced to the DVD. While the book is written by a practitioner for practitioners, its descriptions are so clear that anyone interested in the subject can learn a lot about deep tissue massage.

5 out of 5 stars New edition is due June 5.......2007-04-30

You may want to wait for the new edition.

4 out of 5 stars Good book!.......2007-03-25

If you are a professional MT, I would recommend this book to get some deep tissue pointers and ways to save your body. Think I might get the DVD series too!

4 out of 5 stars Good refresher for recent massage graduates.......2007-03-09

I recently became a Certified Massage Therapist. I had great classes in Deep Tissue technique, but did not receive a visual guide as a text. Although it may not be the most practical guide for those of us who work in salons (a lot of the work is shown in a side-lying position), it is an excellent review for those who are going to work in a clinical setting.

        Book Description

The Politics of Whiteness presents the first sustained analysis of white racial identity among workers in what was the South's largest industry for much of the twentieth century: textiles. Michelle Brattain, who grounds her work in a study of Rome, Georgia, from the Great Depression to the 1970s, adds a significant new dimension to a field that before had focused primarily on antiunionism, paternalism, or mill village culture. Many scholars have argued that racial tensions kept black and white workers from seeing their shared interests. While that may be so, says Brattain, Jim Crow and southern industry also functioned to give white workers very different and racially specific interests. Most importantly, Brattain uncovers considerable white working-class political influence and activism, which, by re-creating and defending southern institutions grounded in the idea of racial difference, helped pave the way for resistance to the civil rights movement.

5 out of 5 stars Truthfull, Enlightning, and full of Informative Statements........2007-08-10

Sheila Anderson's book, How To Grow As A Musician, focuses on many questions that younger artists have the moment they step on the scene. There are great answers, given by revered musicians, that have lived every statement made about the rough road of show business. Sheila allows the reader to hear from those who live the life of an artist. Not those who give commentary or opinions of something they do not know first hand. It is a book that should be in any classroom or library of those who like to follow a plan to personal achievement.

                    Book Description

The war-on-drugs assumes all casual users are corrupted equally. It separates family, love, loyalty, and all positive social structures into protectionist policies, while ignoring the fact that casual users likewise demonstrate all of these qualities. It keeps the testimonial as its logo, and ignores the fact that experience holds no secrets. It calls casual use bad and sobriety good. And ignores that in all practical terms the two are simply different.

This book is structured as a debate between two opponents, one pro drug-choice, the other against. Using a point-counterpoint style the two present their best and worse case experiences. Though there is a logical structure to the presentation of ideas, I have labored to make the debate seem as natural as possible.

The intent of the book may seem to build a case for the legalization of certain drugs, however, my greater intent is this: to present the ideas and voices of those too long dismissed in this debate. Most people believe there are only two sides to an argument. This is a false assumption, for there is right, wrong, and neutral. This oft overlooked third alternative I have relegated to the footnotes.

I would encourage you to not just read passively, but rather engage the conversation with your own arguments. My best hope is this, you will come to see the world in ways you have, till now, overlooked.

He leaped from his chair, ripped off his microphone, and lunged at his ex-wife. Security guards rushed to intercept him. The audience screamed, then cheered. Were producers concerned? Not at all. They were getting what they wanted: the money shot.

From "classy" shows like Oprah to "trashy" shows like Jerry Springer, the key to a talk show's success is what Laura Grindstaff calls the money shot—moments when guests lose control and express joy, sorrow, rage, or remorse on camera. In this new work, Grindstaff takes us behind the scenes of daytime television talk shows, a genre focused on "real" stories told by "ordinary" people. Drawing on extensive interviews with producers and guests, her own attendance of dozens of live tapings around the country, and more than a year's experience working on two nationally televised shows, Grindstaff shows us how producers elicit dramatic performances from guests, why guests agree to participate, and the supporting roles played by studio audiences and experts.

Grindstaff traces the career of the money shot, examining how producers make stars and experts out of ordinary people, in the process reproducing old forms of cultural hierarchy and class inequality even while seeming to challenge them. She argues that the daytime talk show does give voice to people normally excluded from the media spotlight, but it lets them speak only in certain ways and under certain rules and conditions. Working to understand the genre from the inside rather than pass judgment on it from the outside, Grindstaff asks not just what talk shows can tell us about mass media, but also what they reveal about American culture more generally.

I found this book very informative, and it answered my many questions about the truth behind talk shows. The author presents the industry from all angles, from studio audience to home audience to guests to producers. The only drawback is that I found some parts of the book overloaded with "big words" that are not necessary, and are distracting from the substance of the book. For example: "Such practices do not guarantee fireworks and drama, but they help because they locate the potential for dramatic interaction in the strategic juxtaposition of participants rather than (or in addition to) individual performative competence." I consider myself to be fairly skilled when it comes to vocabulary, but I found myself having to reread paragraphs on many occasions. If you're genuinely interested in the topic of talk shows, as I was, it will probably be worth your while to read. It will probably answer all of your questions, if you're willing to pluck the answers out from behind the excess wording.

I am, unabashedly, a talk show junkie. At some level my interest is undeniably scatalogical. Still, as a sociologist, my real fascination is with the culture of such programming and its impact upon American culture. Grindstaff's ethnographic exploration of two American talk shows answers many of my questions about how such programs are produced (the mechanics), the people involved ('ordinary' guests, 'expert' guests, those working behind the scenes, and the hosts), and offers insight into why we are hooked on this type of spectacle. Her treatment of the subject and those involved is even handed and avoids the obvious pitfalls of stereotyping and villifying.

For those interested in popular culture, American ethnography, issues of authenticity, and cultural studies, Grindstaff's text should find its way to your bookshelf ASAP.

Grindstaff has produced an excellent book exposing the underbelly of daytime talk show production. Her profuse detail gathered through extensive ethnographic fieldwork pays off in an effective account explaining the production process associated with the talk show. We see how the offbeat topics are formulated, guests recruited, and production secured on numerous talk show episodes. We are taken behind the scenes and understand that it is a small miracle that the television format manages to survive on a daily basis. The writing is precise and the volume is well annotated.
A fan of these talk shows will gain greater appreciation of how the process is structured and the impact upon producers, talk show guests, and studio audience members. This is a magnificent analysis that should be read by everyone curious about the talk show phenomenon.

                    Book Description

"Bernard Timberg's work on talk shows reminds us all of how intimately we have been connected to this delightfully complicated form of television. It is difficult to imagine America in the twenty-first century without the talk show, and now it is difficult to imagine the talk show without Timberg's rich historical perspective."

—Horace Newcomb, editor of Encyclopedia of Television

Flip through the channels at any hour of the day or night, and a television talk show is almost certainly on. Whether it offers late-night entertainment with David Letterman, share-your-pain empathy with Oprah Winfrey, trash talk with Jerry Springer, or intellectual give-and-take with Bill Moyers, the talk show is one of television's most popular and enduring formats, with a history as old as the medium itself.

Bernard Timberg here offers a comprehensive history of the first fifty years of television talk, replete with memorable moments from a wide range of classic talk shows, as well as many of today's most popular programs. Dividing the history into five eras, he shows how the evolution of the television talk show is connected to both broad patterns in American culture and the economic, regulatory, technological, and social history of the broadcasting industry. Robert Erler's "A Guide to Television Talk" complements the text with an extensive "who's who" listing of important people and programs in the history of television talk.

2 out of 5 stars Academic Book Misses True Talk Television.......2003-02-28

"Television Talk" is the product of another research-oriented academic who obviously read up on many of the talk shows but did not convey the feel behind talk television. The writer may have done some quick research on the subjects but fails to communicate what these shows are really about. There is also an incredible final section (mentioned in more detail below) that claims that "talk television" includes The Miss America Pageant, game shows like Hollywood Squares, and even sporting events like wrestling! Namely, this author doesn't know his subject area.

The author uses a decade-by-decade approach to the subject, meaning that the reader has to string together two or three pages in each chapter about Johnny Carson, a few pages on Letterman in one chapter then hunt down more Letterman information in another chapter. It's terribly distracting and doesn't give a true flavor or feel for what these talk shows were all about. It merely is a historical timeline of what happened during different talk show periods.

The book is NOT for the person who is looking for current insight into the shows. The book has a dated feel and many of the examples and stories are two or three decades old. Has this author even watched any of the more recent episodes of the show?

Overall, there are better books out there on the subject. This book comes across as an extended class research paper, using references and web sites to collect minor bits of information but failing to pick up on some major points. There are big gaps missing regarding the how and why of certain influential shows.

The book ends with an unbelievable "Guide to Television Talk" that groups Oral Roberts, Hollywood Squares, and Oprah Winfrey in the same category. HELLO! Roberts' program is NOT a talk show, it's a religious broadcast in which most of the show over the years has been sermon preaching, and Hollywood Squares is a game show with less than a minute of unscripted talk in each episode (as are many of the other shows listed in this section). It is an incredibly misguided attempt to group together different genres under the title "talk" and it just doesn't work. Pro wrestling commentary by a sports announcer is "talk television?" Get your definition straight before publishing a book on the subject.

The book is purely for this professor's classroom and students wanting a shortcut to research the subject. Otherwise it is an incomplete and ineffective discussion of the subject.

Television Talk was fun to read. Good vignettes, interesting background history on how talk-show hosts started, took the reader behind the scenes ofthe talk shows. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on Letterman and Carson. A good book--serious but at the same time fun.

"Television Talk: . . ." guides one through our most popular television talk shows in the United States, beginning in the 50's with Edward R. Murrow and Jack Paar. It delivers a critical, objective, comprehensive and increasingly insightful view of the evolution of "talk shows" with respect to content and tone. And it reveals the significant influence host personalities from Dick Cavett to Donahue to David Letterman to Oprah (and so many more) have exercised in shaping this increasingly controversial form of mass "entertainment".
