Book Description
From Dr. Phil's Letter to Parents:
I want to talk to you about family: yours and mine. I know and feel that as parents, you and I share some very important priorities. Just like you, I love my family more than anything in this world and I want us all to be safe, healthy, happy and prosperous in everything we do both within our family and as we go out into the world. Cynics will tell you that in our fast-paced society "family" is becoming obsolete, that it is just an old-fashioned, lost concept, getting buried in a busy world of "enlightened" people. I'm here to tell you that that is not right, not even close. Family is even more important today than in generations past, and its erosion is unacceptable. This is a fight we can and must win. This is a fight we will win if we just do our homework and plug in. What I intend to do in Family First is tell you with great precision what you need to stop doing and what you need to start doing to lead your family with such a pure purpose and power that the competing messages and influences are drowned out. I plan to help you define success and then take the steps to create and claim it for you and yours. Your children are the stars in your crown and it is time for them to shine; it is okay for them to shine and, if you do your job, shine they will. -- Dr. Phil

Tools to help put your family first........2007-09-18
This book is on my mind because I recommended it yesterday while talking with a single mother. She clearly loved her kids but was at her wit's end with them not listening, not helping out at home and constantly arguing with her and each other. She said she had "tried everything" (which she later acknowledged she hadn't once she saw how she eventually gave in because the disciplinary tactics she used "weren't working"). This book immediately came to mind as one that is easy to read and will give her guidance on setting boundaries, sticking with them, being consistent and doing "what it takes" to get her family back on track.
This book offers an assessment for parents to identify their parenting style and their child's personality style and provides strategies to best adapt their parenting accordingly. Make sure to measure each of your children separately - amazing how kids in the same family can be so different!
This book is especially recommended for those who are (or quickly heading toward) parenting teens. Even if you feel like you've lost control of your teenage kids, this book's message that it's never too late to turn things around is reassuring and empowering. Some parents might need additional professional help but this book provides a solid start for all.

Great Book, Great Book..........2007-07-25
Dr Phil is inspiring as always. I really enjoyed this book and I think Dr. Phil is powerful and innovative. I also think his work is similar to the encouraging words of another doctor, Dr. Joan. Dr. Joan is just as good in my opinion. I would recommend her for more inspiration and positive words.

Book Description
The public sector seems to be in the early stages of a profound transition, similar in scale to the transformation of private sector industrial relations in the 1970s and 1980s. This volume analyzes elements in what is variously described as reinventing government, re-engineering the public sector, and instituting performance-based government. The contributors suggest the new system will be shaped by two main strategies now being followed. One emphasizes improving the efficiency of government through innovative practices and a movement away from the bureaucratic, civil service model. The other stresses cost cutting as an end in itself. While the first strategy offers improved services and a more involved workforce, the implicit goals of the second are often service reduction, downsizing government, privatization of service provision, and reductions in real compensation. This volume deals with the full scope of public employment relations, including issues of labor adjustment, workplace practices and human resource management policies, as well as alternative dispute resolution procedures and labor-management cooperation in the collective bargaining arena.

Book Description
That's Fit to Print""All the NewsOn June 21, 1950, the front page slogan appeared like this. By the time the error was noticed, it was too late to correct it that day. But it was corrected, in a manner of speaking, the next day and every day thereafter.Even Homer nods. Some mistakes are careless oversights while others are genuine howlers. This irresistible collection of notable errors from the pages of The New York Times includes everything from gross historical inaccuracies, glaring misidentifications, and disastrous recipes to a wide range of inexplicable, unsupportable boners. Kill Duck Before Serving is a quirky selection of all the corrections fit to print by one of our most esteemed newspapers.March 11, 1975In yesterday's issue, The New York Times did not report on riots in Milan and the subsequent murder of the lay religious reformer Erlembald. These events took place in 1075, the year given in the dateline under the nameplate on Page 1. The Times regrets both incidents.April 7, 1995Because of a transcription error, an article about Senator Alfonse M. D'Amato's remarks about Judge Lance A. Ito misquoted the Senator at one point. In his conversation with the radio host Don Imus, he said: "I mean, this is a disgrace. Judge Ito will be well known." He did not say, "Judge Ito with the wet nose."October 22, 2000An article about Ivana Trump and her spending habits misstated the number of bras she buys. It is two dozen black, two dozen beige and two dozen white, not two thousand of each.July 14, 1985A report misidentified the document on which John Hancock put his famous prominent signature. It was the Declaration of Independence, not the Constitution.
Customer Reviews:
Some gems, but neither humorous nor useful.......2007-04-21
There are two ways in which a book such as "Kill Duck Before Serving" can succeed: as a comedy or as a warning. "Kill Duck Before Serving" does neither.
Yes, there are some funny errors in this book (most of which are mentioned in one of the editorial reviews published on this page), but most of the errors are as boring as any corrections page. Consider this one from page 90: "Page 52 of some copies on Saturday was blank." Is that something most people are interested in? Is that funny? It didn't seem so to me.
The book also fails as an exercise in journalistic transparency. No information is given as to why these specific mistakes were chosen to appear in the book. There's no commentary explaining why the errors happened in the first place, or discussion of how errors (such as the erroneous report that Bill Clinton tied up an airport to get his hair cut - I'm sure most Americans still believe this to be the gospel truth) can cause serious damage to an individual's or a corporation's image.
I did enjoy Tom Bloom's drawings, which livened up some of the duller corrections.
I don't particularly recommend this book.
Mediocre bathroom book.......2005-12-05
Occasionally humorous, often obtuse, frequently pointless, this correction collection is only good for one thing I can think of: To briefly take one's mind off one's business while in the necessary room. It's certainly not worth the $13.95 cover price, but for this one purposes it passes the time with an occasional chuckle. Odd premise for a book.
Hubris leads to continued Red Faces @ Grand Old Lady.......2004-11-18
"Red Faces at The New York Times" is "[a] collection of the newspaper's most interesting, embarrassing[,] and off-beat corrections".
Some would say that this NYT publication is an amazing display of collective hubris, and they would be right. It is an amazing example of dangling pr[o]positions, which is something of which they would not be put.
Others would be amazed at the examples of NYT writers, and copyeditors, fact checkers, editors, et al, failing to get it correct in repeated tries, e.g. referring to Dickens' Xmas bird as a goose instead of a turkey. Which establishes beyond a doubt that, at Christmas, not all of the NYT turkeys are on the table. And these other observers would be most correct.
Which leads to this reviewer's glee at finding two uncorrected faux pas on the same page of this delightful source for Letterman's 10 Most lists. I refer to page 21, where in two successive paragraphs, Fermat's conjecture is displayed incorrectly.
Fermat's conjecture, not a theorem, concerned an equation: "x[superscript]n + y[superscript]n = z[superscript]n" which Fermat suggest would have no solution where x, y, and z are positive whole numbers and [superscript]n is a whole number [power] more than 2. Unfortunately, in this tome of contrition, the equation is given as "xn +yn = zn" [no superscript "n"] which of course has an unlimited number of solutions.
This book was also compiled prior to the wholesale invention and plagarism embroglio which terminated two arrogant editors.
Non tu scis, quom et alto puteo sursum ad summum escenderis, maximum periclum inde esse ab summo ne rursum cadas. [Plautus, Miles Gloriosus, 1150-1151]
Ho-hum.......2003-12-06
Wish I'd read the customer reviews before I bought it. A bit of humor, but mostly tedious. Disappointing.
Amusing? Sometimes. Hilarious? Not Really........2003-05-19
Be sure you buy this book with the right expectations. It's not a collection of uniformly hilarious bungles like the "Anguished English" series. As an earlier reviewer noted, there are a few genuinely funny bloopers mixed with many, many dry errors of fact, number, or spelling. There's an irritating undertone of "Look how we at the great New York Times can laugh at ourselves" here, and it doen't make for entertaining reading.

Customer Reviews:
More interesting than I thought it would be.......2006-10-24
I got this book through the library. I thought it would be a very quick read, but I was pleasantly surprised. I remember Howdy Doody as a kid, but forget the exact years when I watched it. When HD first came on the air in NY television was in its infancy and added affililates as the years progressed. HD's demise was ultimately due to the Mickey Mouse show.
To read about the characters protrayed in the show was very interesting especially Buffalo Bob, Clarabell, and Princess Summerfall Winterspring. The author had a crush on the Princess. The Princess wasn't a choir girl by any means and had a mouth that would make a sailor blush. I vaguely remember the Princess and was of course way too young to appreciate her aesthetic values. She died at just 23 three days after completing the movie Jailhouse Rock with Elvis.
It was interesting to read about the Buffalo (as the author calls him). He was quite talented. The Buffalo had a severe heart attack at age 36 due to the stress of working three shows. He was most probably an alcoholic, as he owned a liquor store in Winchester County after he retired from the show. Later in his post Doody years the Buffalo split time between the sticks in upstate Maine near New Brunswick and Ft. Lauderdale, where he owned an apartment building.
If you watched the show as a kid, it is well worth your time to read the book.
Memories of Howdy Doody days............2005-12-22
I would suggest anyone that watched the Howdy Doody show on tv purchase this book. The book brought back fond memories of the times of watching the show on particular saturday mornings. Couldn't put down the book once opened it up. It held my interest that I read the book completely through the first night.
This is THE book for Doodyville fans.......2002-11-22
It's THE definitive, honest look at the operation. A thorough trip through the show's run and the personalities involved. My only criticism, which pales in insignifcance, is that I would have liked a lot more photos.
One even less important event the author missed was the day the Princess Summerfallwinterspring puppet changed *poof* into a real person and was introduced to the whole Doodyville cast, including the cameramen.
Buffalo Bob had that rare ability to look through the camera, past the picture tube and right into your eyes. When I buy toothpaste, it's still Colgate. I think that ability comes through in this book.
I'm still ticked off that the Buffalo backtimed the show so well that we didn't know until Monday what he unveiled in front of the Peanut Gallery on Friday: There was a new circus. I complained to my mother about that and I'm still right. But in my later years as a broadcaster, I still marvel at how he timed it out right to the second. Bob Keeshan makes reference to that ability near the back of the book.
Everything that (and MORE than) you wanted to know!.......2001-09-05
Fun, factual and no-holds-barred. Not only does this book trace the history, creation, long run and bittersweet ending of the Howdy Doody Show but it goes into behind the scenes politics, personality problems, and sometimes adult-oriented rehearsals. There are lots of valentine-like books about this wonderful baby-boomer show (which still is FUNNY on videotape if you can get the right episodes!). But those usually gloss over the time the show fired most of its cast, the frustrations of some cast members, and the extent to which the show became a corporate money-machine for NBC. In the end it's demise had little to do with ratings or show quality but production costs. If you liked Howdy Doody, are interested in the show from a nostalgic standpoint, a show biz standpoint, a puppetry standpoint, or are simply interested in solid show biz history this is a CRUCIAL book since you won't find a lot of this info elswhere. Yes, it's lovingly written in parts...but it doesn't cover the warts. And it's a GREAT read!
Well worth the money!.......1998-08-15
Everything you ever wanted to know about the back stage activities of the Howdy Doody show.
Well written, entertaining and authoritative. This book is a MUST if you want to know about the program.

Joy Says, Don't Overdo with Video Games.......2005-05-01
This is one of Joy Berry's "Survival Series for Kids" books and I have to confess that my son Devon and I like them all. I've had them in storage for years, way before Devon was a twinkle in my eye, or my gal Sara's, and I'm glad I saved them.
In this one Ms. Berry, with excellent illustrations by Bartholomew, demonstrates to your toddler, or a child just a bit older, that overdoing it with video games is a bad thing. However, that doesn't mean video games are bad, only if you spend all your time playing them, ignoring family, friends and real life. She points out that video games should not take the place of your child doing creative things or learning. Video games, she says, are just games.
Though this book was written over twenty years ago, it still stands up. The excellent comic book type illustrations will keep your child interested as you read along with him or her. And for the life of me I don't know why these books are not easier to get. Joy Berry is good for children, that's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. If you can get a hold of her books and share them with your child, you'll both be better for it.

Review, SolidWorks Tutorial and MultiMedia CD.......2004-09-04
I highly recommend this book. The book contains useful information that details exactly how to use SolidWorks correctly.
Great Tutorial: Better than the 2003.......2004-08-09
This was the easiest and best tutorial book I've ever read. I bought the 2003 tutorial and through it was good. The 2004 is great with it's CD. Every book should have a CD that aids the reader. I am fairly proficient with computers, but I had limited knowledge of drafting principles and design concepts. The 2003 and 2004 tutorial provided me with the needed basics and tools required to use SolidWork to develop simple extruded drawings. There are no foreign terms left unexplained, and diagrams are on every page to enforce the command sequence, which is a step by step procedure.
Do not expect to learn everything about drafting or to become an advance expert with this book, it is a basic tutorial. This is the perfect book for learning the ins and outs of SolidWorks 2004 for the beginner. I recommend this book to anyone with no or little knowledge of the industry that may suddenly require the skill to comfortably maneuver in SolidWorks 2004. PS: The layout of the books is very clear and readable.
It's definitely worth a look.......2004-07-24
After making a few parts and assemblies in SW, I found myself trying to understand more about using SW documents in parallel versus in series. This easy to use book walks you through SW in no time by combining parts you create with sub-assemblies from a library of models. The aluminum and stainless steel extrusions -links, plates, collars, start out simple. Look at the illustrations and follow the steps. At the end of each project, more parts and sub-assemblies built my confidence as I worked back and forth.
The book spends a great deal of time stressing sketch relationships. This is time well spent. Coming from AUTOCAD, I used arrays and osnaps, but in SW there are differences that can really save time in the part and later in the assembly.
The drawing chapter takes you through setting up a sheet format, detailing drawings, part numbers in a Bill and inserting design tables for the collar part and link assembly. I made one link with a design table with three holes, then created longer links with more holes and collars. The assemblies in the last project use mirror component and component pattern. There is an emphasis on reusing parts and part geometry.
You do have to keep track of your templates, parts and assemblies. They all come together in the final project. I found myself watching the movies on the book's CD towards the end as the mating techniques and number of components became more challenging at my beginner level. It's definitely worth a look.
