Veteran crime writer Ann Rule is uniquely qualified to chronicle the grisly career of Gary Ridgeway, the man convicted of being the "Green River Killer," the most prolific serial killer in American history. Not only is she one of the more successful true-crime authors, but for nearly 20 years, Rule was exceptionally close to the case, reporting on it for a Seattle newspaper, preparing a long-delayed book on the subject, and living within a few blocks of the strip of highway where most of Ridgeway's victims were abducted. In Green River, Running Red, Rule lends unique humanity to the string of murders that haunted the Seattle area throughout the '80s and '90s by exploring the lives of the dozens of young women who fell into prostitution and were ultimately murdered. Similarly, she catalogues Ridgeway's troubled and bizarre life in such a way that the reader becomes uncomfortably familiar with Ridgeway, although it's never truly clear what drove him to commit such heinous crimes. Along the way, she traces the decades-long struggle of the law enforcement officials assigned to the case as they tracked down countless leads, questioned innumerable suspects, and explored multiple theories that came up empty before finally cracking the case through a series of technological advancements and a little luck. But the most disturbing aspect of the Green River killings (named for where the first victims were found) is how they occurred in relatively plain sight, with Ridgeway, seemingly living an unremarkable life, dwelling and working within a few miles of where his lengthy killing spree took place and evading capture for years. Rule skillfully weaves herself into her account, relating the psychic and cultural impact of the case as it evolved, but she never takes the spotlight off Ridgeway, his eventual captors, and the women who died at his hands.--John Moe

Book Description

In her most personal and provocative book to date, the #1 bestselling master of true crime presents "her long-awaited definitive narrative of the brutal and senseless crimes that haunted the Seattle area for decades" (Publishers Weekly). This is the extraordinary true story of the most prolific serial killer the nation had ever seen -- a case involving more than forty-nine female victims, two decades of intense investigative work...and one unrelenting killer who not only attended Ann Rule's book signings but lived less than a mile away from her home.

Download Description

"In the most extraordinary book Ann Rule has ever undertaken, America's master of true crime has spent more than two decades researching the story of the Green River Killer, who murdered more than forty-nine young women. The quest to discover the most prolific serial killer in American history has been an intimate part of Ann Rule's life, with some of the corpses found only a mile or so from where she lived and raised her own daughters. She did not know the killer, but he apparently knew her and attended many of her book signings. For twenty-one years, the killer carried out his self-described ""career"" as a killing machine, ridding the world of women he considered evil. His eerie ability to lure his victims to their deaths and hide their bodies made him far more dangerous than any infamous multiple murderer in the annals of crime. A few men -- including a law student, a truck painter, and a taxi driver -- eventually emerged as the prime suspects among an unprecedented forty thousand scrutinized by the Green River Task Force. Still, there was no physical evidence linking any of them to the murders until 2001, when investigators used a new DNA process on a saliva sample they had preserved since 1987, with stunning results. Ann Rule has followed the case since July 1982, when the first body -- that of teenager Wendy Lee Coffield -- was found in the Green River, snagged on pilings under a bridge. Rule has compiled voluminous files, working through an incredible 95,000 pages of official police records, transcripts, photographs, and maps, winnowing out the chaff and identifying what is truly important. Over the years, she gained unparalleled access to all the key players -- from King County Sheriff Dave Reichert to those close to the killer and his victims. When finally apprehended and convicted, the killer made a detailed confession -- of his twisted sexual obsessions -- that will shock even the most jaded reader. Green River, Running Red is a harrowing account of a modern monster, a killer who walked among us undetected. It is also the story of his quarry -- of who these young girls were, and who they might have become. A chilling look at the darkest side of human nature, this is the most important and most personal book of Ann Rule's long career. "

4 out of 5 stars In the River.......2007-08-02

Given that she had twenty years to compile her research, Ann Rule had an opportunity to produce the definitive book about the Green River Killer. While other books on the topic preceded this book in print, Rule waited for the Green River Killer to be identified and convicted before publishing. Rule wanted to be thorough, and perhaps she was too thorough.

With a crime spree that began in the early 1980's, it was not until 2001 and major breakthroughs in DNA technology that they were able to arrest Gary Ridgway. A very plain man, he did not fit the image of a monster that most people expected of the killer. Having a bizzare childhood and poor social relationships with others would seem to send signals that there was a problem. Yet Gary Ridgway always seemed to be flying under the radar.

In the early stages of writing this book, Rule decided to recognize each victim as a person individually. While I think this was the right thing to do, a few paragraphs about each of the 48 victims seemed out of place. Not only did it slow the pace of the book, but the brevity or the short passages made them lack any genuine insight into the lives of the victims. Short of making the book 900 pages, I am not sure how Rule could have avoided this quandry.

While many of Rule's books have never solicited my interest, I have enjoyed some of the more focused books that she has written such as "Small Sacrifices" and "I-5 Killer". This does not rank among Rule's better works as it seems to be lacking in vision and occasionally Rule's placing herself in the story seems to scream for self-importance. In reality, the book is about the Green River Killer, Gary Ridgway. That is what the description of the book says, not the short biographies of the Green River Killer's victims or Ann Rule's biography.

2 out of 5 stars not the best book on the subject.......2007-06-15

although this book is fairly comprehensive, it comes off as quite self-serving at times. rule never passes up an opportunity to make herself seem like an insider in the case, or to point out what a caring, sensitive, thoughtful person she is in the midst of so much tragedy and horror.

if you're really interested in the story of the green river killer, i'd recommend starting with smith & guillen's "the search for the green river killer" for a detailed account of what happened, followed by mark prothero's (with carlton smith) "defending gary" for further insight into the killer's mind and crimes.

5 out of 5 stars Ann Rule does it Again.......2007-05-22

If anyone wants "gore" or full focus on the killer then maybe this book is not for them. Probably this was one Ms Rules most difficult books to write & I read somewhere that it maybe some time before she returns full focus on serial killers. Finally here we see more focus on the victims rather than on the killer, who they were, their hopes & dreams, the families that were left behind. This killer has already had the spotlight focused on him for too long & thank goodness someone has thought to remember his victims were real life people and does not focus only on their pain & terror (and by reading some other reviews people bought the book only for that). A great read from start to finish and I would reccomend it to anyone

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2007-03-11

This novel about the green river serial killer was both informative and an interesting read. Ann Rule is a master at writing crime novels and this book is no exception. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in crime or is considering going into some sort of law enforcement profession. =]

5 out of 5 stars A Book Worth Waiting For..........2007-01-14

Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I found this book to be both interesting and engaging. If you have followed Ann Rule's work over the years, you know she has been waiting for (and working on) this book but was unable to do so because the killer had not yet been caught. I've read other books on the GRK and found this one to be the perfect book 'end' to the story.
I find it refreshing that she focused on the victims, who were for the most part, faceless "hookers" to much of the population while these crimes were happening. I also liked the way the narrative went from crime to killer; weaving time together for the reader. I wanted to read this book precisely because Ms Rule was so involved. I enjoyed the fact that she'd been to the scenes and met the key players. As a true crime reader, I put this near the top of my list.

        Book Description

This pioneering volume addresses the key issue of the relationship between politics and economics, with special reference to Egypt in the 1990s. Drawing on the expertise of both political scientists and economists, it assembles an impressive array of data, including detailed opinion surveys, to demonstrate conclusively that political and economic reform need to proceed in tandem.

In an insightful analysis of the Egyptian legislature, the authors draw attention to a fundamental aspect of institutional reform, namely the informational and knowledge base of legislation as well as the organizational infrastructure of policy formulation. As regards Egypt's economic performance since the early 1990s, they focus in particular on impediments to improved export performance and offer solid recommendations as to how such obstacles might be overcome.

This stimulating study makes a timely contribution to political economic analysis, which may at the same time prove helpful in the formulation of new policies.

5 out of 5 stars Institutional Reform & Economic Development in Egypt.......2002-12-08

This valuable study of institutional aspects of liberalisation and reform exemplifies, as Robert Springborg writes in the Forward to this book, `how cross-disciplinary social science research can assist decision-makers in better understanding the relationship between political and economic reform, as well as in formulating specific policies to expedite these processes.' The volume represents not only a fine marriage of theory, empirical analysis, and policy prescription; it also makes a solid contribution to political economy. By analysing political and economic reforms as integrally related, it helps to brings clarity to issues which, in recent decades, have been clouded by the analytic convention of treating politics and economics as separate spheres of social activity.

I have always loved the music from Pippin. For a long time the full score was not available for purchase, so it is nice to have it in print. My reason for giving 4 stars is that the score is published in manuscript form. In this age of computer generated musical scores that look perfect, we shouldn't have to try and decipher notes due to a handwritten manuscript score.

            Book Description

"The strength and uniqueness of his approach lies in his experience as a producer and engineer, which gives him a familiarity with the recording studio and process that enlivens the material in this book. . . . Rock Formation also includes a clear and concise history of sound recording from the phonograph to digital recording and the CD. . . . The book explores the intricacies of the music technology industry and gives an insightful account of the implications for designing and marketing equipment for the dominant rock music market. A chapter on the dilemmas and legal complications surrounding copyright law and the copying of sounds is very informative, including a discussion of the production method of 'sampling,' the process whereby artists recontextualize 'snatches of sound' from other recordings." --Popular Music and Society "The book provides good historical background and lucid accounts of the arguments. . . . It can be warmly recommended, both as an introduction and a stimulus to further work in these areas." --IPM Newsletter "Similar to the volumes which precede it in the series, it is written with sufficient clarity to serve nicely as an upper-level undergraduate textbook. At the same time, as a book that consolidates a good deal of historical research and offers some fresh arguments, it adds up to the growing body of literature on popular music written from a communications perspective. . . . As a musician who has worked on both sides of the control room window, Jones is attentive to minor shifts in the importance and creative input of various occupational or creative roles. . . . As a point in the development of popular music studies where the pendulum has swung towards studies of consumption and reception, a book that skillfully maps out long-term changes in the material circumstances of musical production is a welcome change." --Canadian Journal of Communication "Jones says that technology 'organizes our experience of popular music,' and supports this in the third book in Sage's series, with a concise and clear text." --Communication Booknotes "This well-researched study on popular music production goes far beyond any previous work on the subject. . . . The strengths of this book include extensive quotes from primary sources and an excellent reference section. Rock Formation adds an important dimension to the study of rock and its impact on popular culture. Recommended for graduate and undergraduate communication and music students." --Choice From Elvis, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones, to the heavy metal and punk movements of the last 10 years, rock music has often been praised for its joyful spontaneity and dogged rebelliousness. However, argues industry veteran Steve Jones, contrary to popular perception, rock music is in fact biased toward control, particularly by means of the technology employed in the recording process. Rock Formation examines the history and influence of recording technology on popular music and develops a critical analysis of the interplay between technology, sound, and creativity. It explains the connections between popular music, technology, and mass communication and questions how values--social, cultural, and musical--are transmitted through the process of recording. While there have been many studies of popular music's content and audience in the past 20 years, Rock Formation fills an important gap by exploring the mediation of the most pervasive form of cultural expression--popular music. For both music scholars and committed rock buffs, Rock Formation is an ideal introduction to the subject of popular music production. Jones' work is a study in culture production suitable for courses in popular culture, cultural studies, American studies, sociology, music and communication studies.

Fields of Vision offers a conclusive study of the international phenomenon of television sports coverage. Garry Whannel considers the historical development of sport on television, the growth of sponsorship and the way that television and sponsorship have reshaped sport in the context of the enterprise culture.

Drawing on archival research, Whannel charts the development of the BBC Outside Broadcast department and the growing battle for dominance between the BBC and ITV, showing how sponsorship and the rising power of sports agents began, in the 1960s, to transform sport--not only in the UK but around the world. He examines the implications of this vast and escalating global network during the 1980s, analyzing the central role that stars and narratives began to play in television sport. Presenting case studies of major challenges in sport such as Coe versus Ovett, Decker versus Budd. His study also takes into account one of the more indirect, but no less significant results of international televised sport--the rise of aerobics, fitness chic, and the workout boom of the 1980s.

Fields In Vision explains the development of television sport by linking its economic transformation with the cultural forms through which it is represented, offering a study encompassing not simply the sports world, but our relationship with television and media industries.

5 out of 5 stars enables programmatic verification of a design.......2006-02-05

If you are a programmer [and why else would you be reading this?], then you have experience in debugging conventional code, running on single CPU machines. But what about software running concurrently on several machines? There is an inherent non-determinacy that can cause debugging to be very awful.

In answer, Holzmann and others came up with the SPIN model. He is the main proponent and, fittingly, authored this standard text on it. The basic idea is to represent code by a logic model. Where the code might be already written, or, more usefully, not yet. That is to say, you are doing a top-down approach and working on a design.

The model is written in a special language. Then, the SPIN model checker can programmatically test this model for bugs. Especially in concurrent mode. En route, the book teaches you of the usefulness of finite state machines in modelling.

This programmatic testing is far more robust than manual inspection of the code. The book shows in detail how to use SPIN. The end result is an automated testing of your model. To be sure, you still have to map from your model to the actual code. But this can now be done in confidence that your design was correct.

5 out of 5 stars Essential reference for SPIN users.......2003-11-26

If you are serious about using SPIN, this is the book that should be
              on your desk. Highly recommended.

Model checking is all about finding bugs in software.
Whether you need to find bugs in the initial design of your software,
or want to find errors in your code automatically, model checking tools
can help you out. And among the many model checking tools available,
SPIN is arguably one the most powerful ones. And the good thing is:
SPIN is freely available and open source.

Powerful tools should be handled with care. And SPIN is not any
different. This book, by the principal designer of SPIN, however,
explains everything you need to know to use SPIN in the most
              efficient way.

The book of course explains SPIN's modelling language Promela and the
many ways to specify properties to be checked with SPIN. The usage of
SPIN and its graphical interface Xspin are discussed in depth as well.
The book also shows you what's under the hood of SPIN. The basic

verification algorithms are explained and all optimization algorithms
which make SPIN such a cutting-edge tool. For advanced use of SPIN
(to squeeze out those last megabytes), it is important to have an
              idea how the tool works.
Abstraction is the key activity in composing efficient models that
can be checked with SPIN. The book offers guidelines in how to make
abstractions of system designs, but also shows how to generate
              Promela models from ANSI-C code.

The book is nicely structured into four parts: Intro, Foundation,
Practice, and Reference Material. This makes it easy to find the
              information you are looking for.
Another nice thing about the book is that each chapter is concluded
with bibliographic notes which list the pointers to literature that
go even deeper into the subject of the particular chapter. The
chapters themselves are illustrated with many (real world) examples
and the book is very well written. And be sure to check out
Appendix B "The Great Debates" which discusses several "religious"
              topics concerning concurrency theory.

A substantial part of the book (Reference Material, nearly 200 pages)
is devoted to a reference to all Promela statements and the various
SPIN options. Using the UNIX man-page style, the details of all features
are carefully explained. Especially for this part, I keep the book
within reach on my desk. Even after more than five years of experience
with SPIN, I occasionally need to know the exact semantics of some
Promela construct. And the book explains it well.

Although the book includes some introductionary chapters to SPIN, the
book shines as a reference to SPIN. People completely new to SPIN might
better start their journey at the SPIN's website: http://spinroot.com,
which - among other goodies - hosts some more gentle introductions
on SPIN. But for intermediate and advanced users of SPIN the book
              is a must.
