2 out of 5 stars Better planning books availble.......2005-01-14

I recently purchased this book along with a few others for my upcoming trip to Disney. It will be our first trip there as a family ( I have a 9 and a 2 year old). I found this book to be my least favorite by far. The information is generally vague and is repetitive (eg. "avoid carrying to much stuff......don't forget to bring your camera......wear a raincoat") by the time you read this 4-5 times you kind of get the point. My favorite book to date is The Unofficial Guide to WDW 2005 and also ranking in my top picks is Fodor's WDW & Universal Orlando with Kids 2005. These books get down to the specifics, if you want to eat breakfast with Cinderella in the Castle, the Unofficial Guide has the details to give you the best chance at securing a priority seating (I was able to get priority seating for two different days).
Some people might find that this book is enough, but for me I needed more.

5 out of 5 stars An ideal book for those planning an Orlando trip. Great buy!.......2003-07-05

I purchased this book while planning my family trip to Orlando. I found it to be extremely helpful and is one of the few books available that covers Walt Disney World, Orlando and Seaworld at the same time. This book is ideal for first time visitors to the Orlando area, repeat visitors who have not been to Orlando in awhile and/or those who want to do a good bit of planning before their trip.

When my family first started planning our trip, we knew that there was no way for us to be able to see everything we wanted to in this visit. We wanted to make the most of our travel dollars and visit only places that the whole family can enjoy. This book was extremely useful in giving us information on accommodations, restaurants, parks and their must-see attractions. For each ride/attraction/show within the major theme parks, for instance, the author provides a star rating system based on the individual's age (e.g. 2-4 years, 5-10 years, and so on, including Senior Citizens) as well as information on the attraction itself. There are also "Helpful Hints" sprinkled throughout the book as well as "Travel Tips," "Hot Spots" and "Fast Facts." I found this extremely useful in helping us determine which theme parks would provide the optimum enjoyment for our family.

To give you an idea of how much this book covers, I have listed the chapters below:

    1. Preparing for your Vacation
    2. Choosing your Accommodations
    3. Admission to the Disney Theme Parks
    4. Orlando-Area Dining

    5. Introduction to the Magic Kingdom
    6. Exploring the Magic Kingdom
    7. Kid-Oriented Areas of the Magic Kingdom
    8. All About Epcot
    9. The Disney-MGM Studios
    10. Disney's Animal Kingdom
    11. Disney's Water Parks
    12. Disney Nightlife
    13. A High Seas Adventure (Disney Cruise Lines)
    14. The Universal Orlando Resort
    15. The Universal Studios Florida Theme Park
    16. Universal Escape's Islands of Adventure
    17. Universal City Walk
    18. SeaWorld and Discovery Cove
    19. Exploring Greater Orlando
    20. Planning Your Trip

In addition to this extensive list are maps, important phone numbers, an attraction selection worksheet and daily itinerary. In short, I would have to say that this book gives a lot of bang for the buck. It would recommend it to those with families who are planning to visit the Orlando area and plan to enjoy Walt Disney World as well as the other non-Disney theme parks.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad--But Needs Updated.......2006-08-19

My family and I just returned from our first trip to Disney World. (It was as blast!) Because it was our first time and we were essentially clueless to the Disney experience, we bought several guides.

The 2004 version of The Everything Family Guide was one of five guides that we bought, but after the initial perusal, I didn't even look at it. Instead, I find myself drawn to the Birnbaum guide with its colorful, glossy pages and The Unofficial Guide to Disney World 2006 which is a critical, analytical treatment of just about everything.

Don't get me wrong: author Jason Rich is pretty thorough. It's just that nothing gets any critical remarks (although there's a star system rating likely appropriateness of attractions to age groups), and it's hard to tell what's really "not to be missed" (even though he makes recommendations).

Not only that, even though it's a 2004 edition, it already needs updating. Expedition Everest, the Lights, Motors, Actions! Stunt Show, and other newer attractions are mentioned as "upcoming", but hadn't yet debuted before publication. I get the feeling that the Stitch's Great Escape (which replaced the Alien one) hadn't debuted yet, either, yet he ranked this ride "not to be missed". (Everyone I talked to--and every review of this attraction I've read on the internet--describe this as an AWFUL attraction. No one likes it!)

Also, he mentions attractions that are no longer there--like Tarzan Rocks. There is no mention of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (MGM), Mickey's PhilHarmagic (the best 3D show in all the parks), Test Track (Epcot- The Land) or Crush's Turtle Talk (Epcot-The Seas)--further showing that this book should be updated YEARLY in order to be relevant for visitors.

So if you'd like an overview of Walt Disney World in a gentle, upbeat tone--including restaurant and hotel overviews--this is not a bad guide. Yet, I only consulted it once, preferring the other guides over this one.

Wise and Chisholm's book is a must-have for the scores of Canadians who make the pilgrimage down to Florida each year. For all those tired of fast food mega-chains whose inexorable advertising campaigns litter the sides of US interstate highways, this book is for you. Driving to Florida does not mean 2 days of indigestion anymore. There is good cuisine for everybody if you just know where to look.

This book is a total waste of money. There are so many other good books (AAA guide, Fodor's, Frommer's) which offer guidance about Florida travel. Do not waste your time or money on this one. I don't usually review books, but this one was such a stinker, that I made a special effort...

                Book Description

December 1999 marks the 100th anniversary of Noel Coward's birth: this attractively-designed book tells the story of his life in his own words - and Noel Coward used words in a way that only Oscar Wilde can rival. The witticisms and truthful insights cascaded from him throughout his life, in his plays, musicals, and his own diaries and speeches. Barry Day, with the full co-operation of the Noel Coward estate, has gathered together the best of Coward's wit and wisdom, and linked them together to tell the story of his life. The book is illustrated with cartoons and caricatures of Coward.

                3 out of 5 stars A JUMPING-OFF PLACE.......2001-04-17

I am all in favor of more Americans who don't happen to have lives in the Theatre, familiarizing themselves with the works of Noel Coward. And if this charming, funny, little sampler (chock full of rhymes and quotes and line drawings) will help, then I'm all for it.

But, most of Coward's quotes in Day's book are taken out of context from plays and films. And what usually makes most of them laugh-out-loud funny or just smilingly clever is that very context: what and how and why Coward's characters say what they say.

Also alot of his references are very, very British and relatively antique like this short speech from "Private Lives," one of his best and most frequently revived plays: (Amanda): "And India, the burning Ghars, or Ghats, or whatever they are, and the Taj Mahal. How was the Taj Mahal?...And it didn't look like a biscuit box, did it? I've always felt that it might." That passage (quoted in its entirety from this volume) is simply not really funny, unless the reader knows the play and the character of 'Amanda' or is watching the play and hears the actress playing 'Amanda' speak the lines.

But then there are always his wonderful, romantic lyrics, usually tinged with sadness when they are not downright playful: "I'll see you again,/Whenever spring breaks through again;/Time may lie heavy between,/But what has been/Is past forgetting."

And wonderful, pithy lines that have to do as much with today (think: American politics) as they do with the period in which they were written: "It's discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit."

If this book is a jumping-off place for people to really dig in and investigate Coward more thoroughly, then I recommend it. Better yet, read his plays like the above mentioned "Private Lives" and "Hay Fever" and "Blithe Spirit" to begin with, and then some of his short stories and his vastly under-rated Diaries.

                    Book Description

Can You Sing a HIGH `C' Without Straining? was the first book ever written that explains why anyone with a healthy voice can develop an extended vocal range. The book shows how to sing high notes in full voice without going into falsetto, and without straining.

For the first time ever in a book about singing, a thorough explanation about what causes a "break" in between the lower and upper registers of the voice is presented. You'll learn why break points occur in your voice and how to eliminate them through vocal exercises.

Jeffrey Black, who starred in the role of Paul McCartney in the hit musical Beatlemania says, "My voice often felt tired and hoarse after a show. But after buying Can You Sing a HIGH `C' Without Straining? I learned how to approach high notes without having to work as hard. I've read the book and listened to the CDs over and over again, and I can't believe the difference it's made. Thomas, this is a milestone you've created."

Sonny Joseph, M/D., P.H.D. says, "Being a medical doctor addicted to music. I was delighted to find that after learning the vocal method presented in Can You Sing a HIGH `C' Without Straining? I was able to safely and effectively extend the range of my voice by 9 notes. Rather than experiencing any hoarseness, my voice has become much stronger and more pleasing."

Having good vocal technique is wonderful, but not enough. With this proven training system you'll learn how to develop your own personal style and how to emulate the stylish tricks used by your favorite singers. You'll also learn why the development of an extended vocal range is the key to eliminating hoarseness and protecting your speaking and singing voice.

Included in this special package are three audio CDs jamm-packed with over two hours of vocal examples and exercises plus 60 minute video training exercises on DVD for male and female singers.

Have you wondered why a young voice changes while going through puberty? Do you know how your speaking voice affects your singing voice? Would you like to know how to develop vibrato in your voice? Would you like to know why your voice flips into falsetto when you try to sing a note that is too high for your natural voice? Would you like to know how to control the tone of your voice? Find the answers to all of these questions as you read the easy-to-understand book, listen to the three audio CDs and watch the videos.

If you are truly interested in finding out all that you can about singing, you will enjoy gathering the many nuggets of wisdom found in this vocal training system about what many consider to be the most beautiful and least understood instrument - the voice.

4 out of 5 stars A comparitive review to Speech Level Singing.......2007-03-29

A lot of the self-study vocal instruction material out there is based on Seth Rigg's SLS (Speech Level Singing), this includes Roger Love's books, Brett Manning's Singing Success package, the IdolsAdvantage course, etc... If you're looking for self-study material you've probably found all of these and more inspired by or copying SLS

I have tried a good number of the self-study programs and I've taken private SLS instruction from a level 3 instructor. So when I purchased "Can You Sing A High 'C'..." I had about eight months of background in SLS. For someone just starting out in vocal instruction or anyone who is new to singing and has pitch problems or problems with breath control (I've been told the later includes most people seeking vocal help), I highly recommend starting out with SLS. It appears to be the most proven approach to training the voice and its technique has been applied by some of the most successful vocalist across genres; from Ozzy Osborne to Keith Urban. Name a popular genre and SLS is going to have a slew of top selling vocalist who have been clients.

Of all the SLS inspired material, I believe the most approachable Roger Love's book "Set Your Voice Free". This isn't a detailed SLS course and it's missing some of the finer details. Instead of providing a formal course it hits on the most important parts of the SLS techniques through Roger Love's approach. I've already written a review for Roger's book (a very good book), so if you want to know more about it, go check out my review and what others have to say. It's the most bang for your buck and a great way to work out pitch and breathing problems and working through your break....

Now having endorsed SLS, here are some differences between SLS and what Mr. Appell presents in his book Can You Sing a High 'C' without straining?

                    * In SLS the larynx stays low all the time! This is a key part of that technique. Appell teaches you to use low and high larynx positions and explains when you might want to go one way or the other.

                    * SLS teaches everyone has a chest, middle and head voice and one of it's primary goals is helping students bridge the gap (i.e. vocal break) between the chest and head and develop middle voice. Appell teaches you that not everyone has three registers. He explains how our use of spoken English effects this and provides scales to overcome vocal "breaks" in the similar way SLS does. Using his system you will probably have more than one break as you strengthen the muscles around your chords and are able to adduct the chords to go extremely high.

                    * SLS frowns on using lemon juice, honey concoction. Appell recommends this.

                    * SLS has one approach to teaching vibrato (pulsing) and basically says the others approaches to vibrato are unnatural and should be avoided. Appell teaches three different approaches, including pulsing.

                    * SLS teaches that when singing properly the voice never gets tired, Appell implies you should push your self to the limit, strain until (after weeks) you no longer have to. He teaches you how to strain in a way he believes is the proper way to slowly increase range and for many his approach seems to work. I suspect this scares many a vocalist and is why a lot of people decide to work privately with Appell to apply his technique under supervision. I can not commit on how well his range extended techniques work because I'm not sure yet how far I want to "push it" without his one-on-one instruction.

                    * SLS focuses primarily on full voice, falsetto is studied as well, however one of the problem students of SLS find is that as they transition from the warm ups/workouts to songs their voice still cracks in areas. Appell reveals the reason behind this through his explanation of how the cords adduct (you need to train your voice at different intensity levels ranging from falsetto to full voice on every note to truly work out all your breaks, since popular music require a lot of dynamics and you will not be singing in full voice all the time). Appell provides a crescendo exercise to work out these problems.

While Appell's client roster is no where near that of Seth Riggs has. I believe his approach is at least as important. Look at his website and you can hear samples of his students success. No other vocal coach is doing that for potential clients. Appell goes to great lengths to provide the science behind his approach. Appell is part Scientist and part Musician.... Seth Riggs is part Marketing genius and part Musician. Don't discredit Appell's technique just because he doesn't have the big names behind him.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle of The Right Info!!!!.......2006-07-16

I was never really the greatest singer in the world. I could stay on key and I could hold harmonies but really strong and high singing was not in my arsenal. So I went to voice lessons for 2 months and my range increased a little. I went from a top note of G to B (sometimes). I couldn't seem to get past that B no matter what.

Then a friend lent me "Can You Sing a High 'C' Without Straining?" I read the book and the info sounded very scientific and logical so I tried the exercises for a couple weeks. Now I had already proven to myself that no matter how often u do things the wrong way u won't get the desired result, but I could never have imagined how amazing my results would be from doing this the right way!! I can say without apology that these methods in Thomas Appell's course work!! I am the proof!! This is THE RIGHT WAY!!

The reviewer who called it unrealistic apparently only read the book and didn't try the exercises. The theory is sound and the results prove it. Oh and these 'results' I'm talking about can be seen in a couple of weeks. I'm sorry if I sound a bit overenthusiastic but I'm a true believer in this product (and no I don't know Mr. Appell-- I'm just a VERY satisfied customer!)

I have since toured the world singing songs I never would have been able to had it not been for this course (I eventually bought my own copy). So by all means get a copy and treat it like the precious gift it is

5 out of 5 stars Singing better than than I ever would have imagined.......2006-03-12

I've been using the techniques in Can You Sing a HIGH C Without Straining? for about two years now. My range increased tremendously. The book helped me to really get to know my voice, especially in the area of tone and control. It gives you the tools to take your voice to the next level safely. The book teaches that you don't have to strain or feel uncomfortable when singing higher notes, and I can say that's exactly what I now experience because of this teaching method. The vocal examples on the DVD and CDs that come with the set were very helpful. I'd highly recommend for any singer interested in improving their voice to buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Can you sing high C, I can Now.......2006-02-21

Can you sing a High C without straining is literaly an incredile way to increase your vocal performance. I have bought other vocal videos from the music store and such and nothing quite explains how to actually use your vocals like this book. It goes over vocal excersises needed to increase full voice so that when you hit that high C there is no straining, as well as ways to make your pitch dead on, which if you want to showcase your voice is most important. I know the negative reviews might say certain things about reality, sure but I think those of you know if you talk like James Earl Jones you should buy the book to improve pitch and it shuold also and most importantly increase your range as well. I recomend this to anyone who is willing to make thier voice a true instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Increased My Range By 7 Notes! Andrea Lynem, L. A. Clippers Cheerleader.......2006-01-04

Being a Los Angeles Clippers cheerleader has given me lots of opportunities to showcase my skills as a singer. I've sung the national anthem twice for Clippers games at the Staples center and I'm working on my career as a recording artist. You can't miss in front of a crowd of 18,000 people, and the vocal technique Thomas presents in this book has given me the ability to consistantly hit very high notes with ease and no strain. I increased my range by seven notes using this technique. If you want to increase your range without straining, buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

                      Book Description

A careful analysis of the mixed results for the U.S. of the growing population of these highly-trained, foreign-born, mostly U.S. educated scientists and engineers. On one hand, they are a hard working, skilled population, likely to stay in the U.S. and become citizens after receiving their graduate degrees. On the other, they are more likely to receive U.S. funds for their education than U.S.-born graduate students in these fields, and their presence (as the title suggests) eases pressures on government, corporations and academe to spend more energy encouraging women and minorities to seek careers in these fields. The foreign-born scientists and engineers tend, incidentally, to be paid a little better than their native-born peers, when such factors as age, year of degree, area of specialization, etc. are held constant. The book includes descriptions of the systems through which the foreign-born scientists and engineers flow, including the major gatekeeping roles played by graduate schools, the Educational Testing Service, and by U.S. corporations, and the minor ones played by the U.S. Government. Immigration, educational attainment, occupational and economic data are also presented. àBContents: An Overview; A Specialized American Vacuum; The Numbers of Foreign-Born Scientists and Engineers; Characteristics of Foreign-Born Scientists and Engineers; Motivations; Americans' Graduate School Choices; Graduate School Choices of Foreign Students; The Different Levels of Interest in the Life Sciences; The Gatekeepers; The Educational Testing Service; Graduate School Admissions; Getting a Job in the U.S.; The Immigration Process; Roles of Foreign-Born Scientists and Engineers; Overview; The Foreign-Born in Academe; The Foreign Born in Industry: The Older, Larger Pattern; The Foreign Born in Industry: The Newer, More Controversial Pattern; Impacts of Foreign-Born Scientists and Engineers; The Impact on Education; The Impact on Industry; The Impact on U.S. Populations; The Impact of the Foreign Born on Science and Engineering; U.S. Reactions to the Impacts of Foreign-Born Scientists and Engineers; The Mainstream Reactions; Eddies; Conclusions and Recommendations.

                        Book Description

While the 2000 presidential election had a number of unique features, including the decisive role of the Supreme Court, it actually was quite similar to three earlier television-age campaigns. For the fourth time since 1960, an incumbent president retired and his party nominated the vice president as a potential successor. The nomination of the vice president has become so commonplace that we now expect it. Unfortunately, we lack theoretical explanations of why vice presidents win nominations while often losing the general election. Dover seeks to advance this needed theory. Dover looks at the recurring features of television-age "elections with surrogate incumbents" and applies them to a description of the leading events of Election 2000. The emphasis is on mediated incumbency, a phenomenon that occurs when mass media, particularly television, exert enormous influence in defining the context and meaning of politics for most voters. The first topics considered are the growth of the modern vice presidency and the nature of surrogate incumbent elections. The outcome of such elections often turns on how effectively the vice president and his opponent overcome dilemmas unique to their strategic positions as incumbent or challenger. Dover then describes the campaign from January 1999 through December 2000, from the perspective of television news media, and shows how Gore failed to overcome his dilemma during a time marked by peace and prosperity. The text is an important resource for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with American elections, political communication, and the American presidency.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide to Cubase........2006-11-21

I find this a facinating book that helps to quickly knock down the learning curve of Cubase SX. To me it's easier to digest than the manual supplied with Cubase. I have Cubase 1.0 and Cubase Studio 4, it seems to be adequate for this and in between. From setting up your first audio or midi recording, to editing, to mastering, it seems to cover all aspects in a reasonable sized book. I can't think of much that could be done to improve it. I highly recommend this for anyone who has a desire to dive into computer based recording. It even give brand name mic and interface hardware recommendations. I sat down at a local national bookstore and combed over 3 different guides to Cubase and this one clearly excelled, prompting me to purchase it. This is one I never lend out!
