If you're up to medical school, you will already have surmounted substantial scholastic challenges and accomplished considerable scholastic success; you're no stranger to concepts such as hard work, study, and competition. It's not a matter of whether to review for the MCATs, but rather how to study and with which materials.

Kaplan has created the top MCAT course. They know which material needs to be reviewed, and they know the strategies that help you take the Medical College Admission Test most effectively. The MCAT requires that you be well versed in biology and basic chemistry, and, toward that end, Kaplan's review includes refresher chapters in embryology, homeostasis, and molecular genetics, as well as thermochemistry, atomic structure, and the gas phase. The organic chemistry chapter goes over everything from nomenclature to spectroscopy, while the chapter on physics covers magnetism, Newtonian mechanics, and nuclear phenomena.

The MCAT tests more, however, than your knowledge base. Medical schools can look at your transcripts if they want to know how you did in organic chemistry. The schools want to know how well you have integrated what you learned, and how well you can apply that knowledge. The MCAT tests cognitive skills such as reading comprehension, data analysis, critical reasoning, and writing ability, so Kaplan's chapters on verbal reasoning and essay writing are every bit as important as your comprehension of the endocrine system.

With answers and explanations in each science review chapter, a full-length practice MCAT with answers and explanations, and a CD-ROM that provides a timed practice test, detailed scoring analysis, and a personalized performance prep, Kaplan's MCAT review text will help you perform well, demonstrate what you've learned effectively, and continue on toward your goal. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Bad Choice for MCAT.......2005-11-13

This book looks very thorough and perfect for MCAT studies but do not be fooled by the looks. If you want to get higher scores, do use Kaplan material or classes. There are many reasons for this.

I am taking my MCAT in April 2006 and I bought this book. I compared it with the 1997 edition and surprisingly everything is same except the questions after each chapter. The material in this book is just recycled and not updated.

The material is too vague and too easy compared to the actual test. MCAT tests your critical thinking about the subjects and its applications but the examples and problems in the book are very primitive. The material is insufficient and not thorough.

The classes do not help a lot. My friend, Sandip, took this Kaplan MCAT prep class last year and he regretted it. He told me the practice exam are not comparable to the real test. The real test is much harder. They also do not have enough classes.

You should enquire about the class and the book you are using for MCAT with your professors, your classmates, friends and colleagues. You should take Princeton Review class for organized studying and practice exams similar to real MCAT. I also recommend the Exam-crackers. Practice as many sample tests as you can.

Good Luck for you MCATs!

4 out of 5 stars Great review, don't get discouraged with the practice tests.......2005-05-23

I did very well on the MCATs, and I attribute a large degree of my success to this review book. While it's important to have a solid base from your classes already, this book will make sure you know every topic covered on the MCATs, including areas my classes had left out (e.g. optics in the physical science section). It covers all sections well, includes test strategies and practice problems/essays, and if you take the time to thoroughly study the book, it will pay off. My only warning is that the practice tests and problems are deliberately more difficult than the MCAT so Kaplan can claim to have improved your score by a vast number of points. For example, they make the math deliberately time-consuming to slow you down (there was no long division on the real MCAT!). I scored a full 7 points higher on the actual MCAT than on the Kaplan test, so don't stress if you're not scoring how you'd like.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be ripped off please!!.......2005-02-19

The best advice i can give any future pre-meds is to listen to this review. Kaplan is the worst mcat prep out there. First, they recyle their materials every year so it's the same thing never updated despite what they say. Their science is just all thrown in there without telling you what is imperative knowledge. Their verbal practice is horrible and not accurate of the real thing. Also, stay away from their class and if you really need to pick a prep course go with Princeton Review they give you 3x as many classes. Also i would recoomend Examkrackers to anyone studying for the MCAT. It really is the best and you will not be sorry. Stay away from kaplan please . i just luckily got Examkrackers and it made all the difference 11 P, 11 V, 11 B. Trust me go with examkrackers and if you have to take a course cause your like that go with Princeton Review. You won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars You need more than just this book!.......2004-06-25

I recommend that you buy a used copy of this book, even if it an older edition, I've heard they don't change that much from one year to the next (but don't go too old). The reason being because you should determine your weak area(s) and purchase the Examcrackers book specific for that subject. Whatever you do STUDY!!! Don't do what I did and just go take it, it ripped me up one side and down the other! I'm taking it again in August. I got the Examcrackers Verbal Reasoning to go along with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Proceed with Caution.......2004-04-30

Kaplan is like a rapist in a bar looking for a naive girl who needs a ride home. They will tell you that they help people improve their MCAT score by an average of 8 points by enrolling in their program. A little thought can help one realize however, that this is far from the truth. In fact they have no ideal about how writting is graded on the MCAT or what sophisticated biology material looks like because they know that they can sell the old stuff and make the same ammount of money. They forget to tell you that an added pressure of 1200 spent dollars sits on your shoulders as you are taking an exam where PRESSURE AND STRESS DETERMINE ALL. Needless to say, real statistics show that Kaplan hinders more than it helps. About 85% of currently enrolled medical student's IQ was reflected in their choice to have not used Kaplan. Try this out for your self. Ask around. It is true. Proceed with caution before purchasing anything from this company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                        2 out of 5 stars Academic Pretentiousness at its Most Nauseating .......2006-11-09

                        I'm sorry to rain on Gary Saul Morson's parade of academic pretentiousness, but I found the book misleading and troubling on many levels. It is a classic example of what has gone terribly wrong with Slavic Studies in our country. Morson, a distinguished teacher and scholar of Russian literature, has a brilliant mind, a fierce wit, and a tin ear for Russian art and history. That is why all of his books--including And Quiet Flows the Vodka (a cliched parody of Mikhail Sholokhov's classic novel, And Quiet Flows the Dawn)--tend to be extremely clever on an intellectual level, yet insensitive to the human concerns of Russian literature and the tragic spirit of Russian history. Professor Morson loves Russian literature because it has provided him with a career worth of material to teach us what Professor Morson thinks about the world; he does not seem to love Russian literature on its own terms, for what it tries to illuminate about Russian history or the human condition.

                        For his convictions Fyodor Dostoevsky spent 5 years in a Siberian prison camp. Leo Tolstoy was excommunicated from the Russian Orthodox Church. Alexander Solzhenitsyn spent eight years as a political prisoner in the Gulag, and he was eventually exiled from his homeland by the Soviet government. The poet Nikolai Gumilev was executed before a firing squad for his anti-Soviet beliefs. Professor Morson, who is comfortably ensconced as a tenured professor at Northwestern University, has not, to my knowledge, put his professorship (or his life) on the line for his convictions. He probably cannot quite relate to the kind of spiritual courage demonstrated by the Russian artists he mocks. Still, his sense of decency and integrity might have compelled him at least to pay some tribute, however small, to this important dimension of the subject he "covers." Pushkin, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov all had an ear for the ironic and comedic aspects in Russian life, no less than Professor Morson. But they were also great humanists, who tried to tell the whole truth about the world they described, and who courageously fought for what they believed to be right and just.

                        It is well-known fact that Professor Morson speaks Russian very poorly, and he relies almost exclusively on English translations for his books and articles about Russian literature. How deeply can he possibly feel the spirit of Russian literature, and how sincerely are his efforts to truly know Russia on its own terms, if he cannot be bothered, after nearly fifty years, to learn the language of his specialty? And now, at the pinnacle of his illustrious career, his first and only book for a general audience is a sly, derisive, self-aggrandizing romp through the painful wounds of Russian history, rather than a sincere effort to try to help Americans discover what is worth knowing about the country and the culture to which he has dedicated his life. Is this what a distinguished career as a professor of Russian Literature at a top American University amounts to?

                        I hope that Professor Morson will find time to learn Russian, to make his way to the country he claims to know, and to observe with his heart as well as his head what Russian history is all about. Until he does, he will remain a mediocre humorist and a source of continued misunderstanding about one of the world's most fascinating and important cultures.

                        5 out of 5 stars From Russia: "Wear gloves!".......2001-11-27

                        A scalding repast of Cyrillo-Slavic virtues and vices; a true academecian triumph. This discourse on the ambiguities rages against Tsarist constipation just as poignantly as it does against the unconscious Soviet collectives (or is that Soviet collective unconscious?). A must for all scholars, travellers, and seekers of selfless debasement.

                        2 out of 5 stars Can You Say "Vanity Press"?.......2001-07-28

                        This book (whose actual author is the distinguished Slavist Gary Saul Morson) has a few very funny segments, but there's an awful lot of dross; the more I read, the less I liked it. It makes me sad to think that someone's real book was probably passed over in order to publish this hodgepodge of professorial doodlings.

                        5 out of 5 stars A vicious attack on academia and Russia's place in it.......2000-10-28

                        I too am shocked and outraged that such a book was allowed to appear. Haven't we staffed all our Slavic Departments with ardent Russophiles, elbowing out everybody who babbled something about changing times? I thought we have wiped out once and for all the pernicious critics of things Russian, all those de Custines who, you know, were all homosexuals and probably worse. If I knew who the coward hiding under the pen name of Professor Chudo was, I would have denounced him to the FSK!

                        The long-suffering Russia received a slap in the face through this book. Invaded so many times, betrayed by her friends, this kind and gentle nation never fought a war (unless invaded), never hurt anyone, and it has always treated old people with respect. Moreover, the book fails to mention that in the eighteenth century, Russia already had great writers and more. Elena Petukhova

                        5 out of 5 stars Nauseating, blasphemous, Russophobic!.......2000-10-16

                        I give this book five stars because it is so nauseating as to achieve a repulsive excellence of its own. At least it is never boring, and I would not show my marginal glosses to minors (or majors). Everything about this collection of parodies and travesties of Russia and American academia is disgraceful. Chudo has "discovered" part of a Dostoevsky novel - the title is variously given as "Torture" or "Torture: A Comedy" - that utterly fails to do justice to the author's piety and love of humanity. I can tell you that in her discussion of Russian intellectual history, her portraits of The League of Beefy Vegetarians, the Society of Organized Anarchists, and the Union of Militant Pacifists are greatly exaggerated. She mocks Pushkin's Tatyana! She dares to offer her own scene from a Chekhov "play, "The Dodo," which makes the great lover of humanity descend to the lowest forms of comedy. Worst of all, she fails to show respect to the most saintly figure in Russian history - I mean, of course, St. Pstislav of Perm, whose eighteenth-century treatise, "Heaven in the Balance" influenced Isaac Newton, Ludwig Weigh, and Patricia Scales; Albert Schweitzer and Mother Teresa; and, of course, Al Gore. She is more of a Russophobe than Joseph Conrad; but not content with this, the second part of her book, "The Devil's Dictionary of Received Ideas," also travesties American universities. I notice that she is the author of a scholarly study, "Children of Menippus: Despisers of Humanity from Antiquity to the Present" and founded the "new discipline" of misanthropology. She also fails to mention my study of Isaac Babel. -- Martin Steerforth

                            Book Description

                            Cultures and nations remember themselves with select bodily images, evocative rituals and texts. This volume illustrates how sport is used in the creation, maintenance and now global dissemination of a nation's cherished values. Carefully drawn cases of sport in North America - American baseball and football, figure skating and gymnastics, Canadian hockey and track and field, for example - show the potency of sport's "cultural work". The book captures uplifting images which are stressed in the public performance and national and international broadcasting of sport, but also notes the omissions and distortions of social reality that persist in sport performance and mass marketing in North America.

                            The St. Louis Arena Memories is the history of the Arena - told through memories. The Arena, originally built in 1929 to host the National Dairy Show, became the major exhibition building in the St. Louis, Missouri, area. The story of the Arena is told in chronological order and is supplemented with pictures from conception to implosion. The book also contains remembrances from people who lived near the building, who worked in the building, who owned the building, who performed in the building and, most of all, from people who were entertained in the building. The St. Louis Arena Memories tells the history of the Arena and a part of the social history of the city of St. Louis from 1929 to 1999.

                            5 out of 5 stars The Arena - The Memories Live On!.......2002-04-15

                            In the 1940s I can recall walking from our house on Cates, down DeBaliviere, through Forest Park and seeing that magnificant structure, The Arena. It featured a sign, "The Arena - Where the Big Events are held" along with the BAA Basketball sign for the Bombers and the AHL sign for the Flyers. Patti Smith Jackson's book, resplendith with photographs, allows those affectionados of this marvelous structure to keep memories such as this by putting her work in your hands whilst the building itself is now gone. Being over 65 I would have enjoyed more information about the earlier tennents of the building such as the Flyers of the American Hockey Association from 1928 to 1942 and then in the American Hockey League from 1944 to 1953. I can remember Neil Norman announcing the last period of the games starting at 9:45 PM on WIL in the 40s and Harry Caray doing same in the 50s. I would have liked more info on Tom Pack's wrestling matches at the Arena. I would have liked more information on the Bombers basketball team that started in the Basketball Association of America in 1946 and were one of the teams in the first season of the National Basketball Association in the 1949-50 season before folding. What I found missing in the Arena book was any mention of the Wirtz's moving some of the Chicago Blackhawks games to the Arena in 1953/54 to test the St. Louis market. It allowed a lot of us to see the greats, Gordie Howe, Maurice "Rocket" Richard, terrible Ted Lindsay. Also they had little coverage about the Bombers BAA/NBA team. Attendance was so bad that last season and I remember going to basketball doubleheaders with my Dad in the 49-50 season where he paid $1.25 for general admission and I got a ticket for a penny (on penny nights). Also after the Bombers folded after their first season, 49-50, the New York Knickerbockers wanted ex-St. Louis University star Easy Ed Macauley so badly that they offered to purchase the entire Bombers team but the NBA put the nix to that and Easy Ed went to the Boston Celtics instead. Harry broadcast the last half of the Bombers games on WIL also. But then it is really interesting how the folks responsible for the Big Events kept it all together with scotch tape and glue. This book is a MUST for anyone who loved the Arena and certainly will help the memories live on!

                            4 out of 5 stars Great memory book, but lacking on real information.......2000-11-17

                            This book is a great coffee table item...I have been a Blues fan since 1986, that's right, the Monday Night Miracle. I loved the building. I played an inline hockey game with friends before a Vipers game as a promotion for the rink we played at locally. Just being behind the scenes in a "locker room" was amazing. I received this book for Christmas and read it before noon Christmas Day. I found the pictures and stories great, but it certainly lacked real information. I was very interested in the design of the building, the architechure, and stories about the tunnels and hidden walkways that this book hints at, but never dives into telling you. How about a volume two???

                            3 out of 5 stars Oh , the memories.......2000-06-22

                            The Arena was built in 1929 for dairy cows, and it was in that building that the first power play in the history of the NHL happened in 1934.My grandmother could tell you about my cousin,Larry Finch, who played against mighty UCLA in 1973,for Memphis State. It was also where Penny Hardaway hit one of the most dramatic shots in Memphis State history in 1992. I cried when the place was imploded, because my friend , Kevin Holowchik, is a Blues fan and he was born there in St.Louis. You can tear the building down,but you cannot tear down the memories.

                            5 out of 5 stars That building is beautiful -- LETS GO BLUES!.......2000-05-12

                            Well, being a season ticket holder for 28 years for the Blues, all's I have to say is that is the most colorful, bold, outstanding, lifelike, most entertaining structure on the planet!

                            4 out of 5 stars Lots of pictures, short on info........2000-01-01

                            I loved this book, but I wish it had more details about the Arena itself. For example the book twice mentions the basement in the Arena, but nowhere does it describe this basement. I would have liked to see more details. Overall the best (and only) book dedicated to the great St. Louis Arena that is near to many hearts.

                            Of all the books I had to purchase for Graduate classes, this is really the only book I've found I really do use. A great reference, even if slightly out of date.

                                Well I managed to wade through the muddle at the beginning about different compilers how fast etc and came to the nitty grits of using the IDE and compiler. What a shambles. AS a retired Raytheon Engineer in computer memories this was nonsense to me. In his own mind Mike I am sure knows his stuff but the way he goes about it is not planned. He should have been more explicit on the family tree when setting up the IDE and the Hi-Lite compiler. Start with a simple program let us all know what each line means. Also in one sentence tell us all that the Tristate register is programmed to either transmit or receive data and the ordinary port can be programmed to send or receive all or selected bits.A better buy is the CD one can buy from the UK which has on the CD the IDE , Compiler and excellent tutorial down to the nitties. I tried to contact Mike but Nada reply.

                                It would greatly help this book if it had tabs or some other way to help you index into the book. For example, if I want to look up an instruction, I open the book somewhere near the front 1/4 and spin the pages until I see the tables for the instruction set. Ah, but then I have to make sure I'm looking at the correct instruction set (low, mid, 17xx, 18xx) by going to the first page of the table to see its heading (the editor should emphasize on each page to which instruction set we are looking at. I have had to add mini Post-It(TM) notes to each section to help me index faster.

                                Coverage of the instruction sets are lacking (one page should be dedicated to each instruction and examples for the use of that instruction should be given). Don't make me turn the book side-ways. Put separation lines between each instruction if you can't put each instruction on a separate page.

                                I think the author should think more about what kind of information people would reference most. My feeling is that they would reference the instruction set and details about the instruction set the most. So that is where he should spend the most time getting a good format.

                                Where would I go to look for IC pin identification? The data sheet of course; not this book. Where would I go to see examples of how to hook up an LCD. Perhaps to the Programming and Customizing" book, but not in a reference book.

                                One last comment about the size and shape. I would rather see a book that's 6"x4" and 1/4" deep rather than 3"x2" and 1" deep. The current size and shape require multiple pages to cover topics, make indexing into the book harder because there are more pages to spin through, and the book doesn't stay open unless you turn it over. (how can I refer to the text and type on my PC at the same time if the book is face down?)

                                I, personally, am going to look on the web for a better reference document that is easier to use. I wish one could get their money back for books that don't meet your expectations. I usually get books through inter-library loan and check it out to see it's good enough to purchase. I guess I should have done that with this book.

                                3 out of 5 stars Necessary Book? - You Be the Judge........2002-11-18

                                I am a professional consultant doing software for embedded processors. I have no affiliation with Myke Predko, the publisher, Microchip, or anyone else. Also, I am not getting paid for this. I got this book because I thought it would be handy to have a reference that had the assembly instructions for the PIC processor that I was using in one small book.

                                I have already purchased and reviewed Myke's other book "Programming & Customizing PICmicro Microcontrollers."

                                Here's what I learned:

                                1. I found the portable and fold-up type instructions sheet (yes, one sheet) that came with Microchip's MPLAB-ICD to be easier to use than Myke's book for the purposes of writing code. I could find the instruction faster in this sheet than I could in Myke's book. Searching for an item on one sheet is faster than paging through a book. Also, I can make the same comments about the data-sheets. It was easier to print these out and reference them than it was to look through the book.

                                2. When I did use Myke's book, I found myself checking it against the Microchip data sheet for confirmation. I found spelling errors with some of the assembly instructions listed in the book (the 2nd bcf command on page 32 and the btfsc command on page 33 are prime examples.)

                                3. Each instruction is explained in great detail. He included how the status bits are affected for commands that affect these bits. This is good because you don't have to search for this information in the data sheets. However, when I am in the midst of writing a code, I don't want to think anymore than I have to. I don't want to go think through complex boolean expressions that I'll forget in a few seconds right after I understand them. The example below illustrates this by comparing Myke's approach with Microchip's approach.

                                For the addwf f,d command,

                                Microchip says in their instruction set summary "Add the contents of the W register with register f. If d is 0, the result is stored in the W register. if d is 1, the result is stored back in the register f." It also tells me which flags are affected. If I want to know how the flags are affected, I just look up the status register info. in the data sheet - simple.

                                In his book, Myke writes:

                                if (d==1)
                                Reg = Reg + w
                                else
                                w = Reg + w
                                endif
                                c = (Reg+w)
                                > 0x0FF
                                Z = ((Reg + w)&
                                0x0FF) == 0
                                DC = ((Reg & 0x0F)
                                + (w& 0x0F)
                                > 0x0F

                                The size of the book limits how this command is presented.
                                Still, the status bits could have been explained separately as the explanation is applicable to all instructions that affect the C, Z, and DC bits of the status register. Doing this would make the command easier to read.

                                4. I found myself using this book less and less when searching for specific assembly commands. For the purposes of programming, all the information I need is in the Microchip data sheets.

                                5. Chapters 11 (Useful Code Snippets,) 12 (16 Bit Numbers,) and
                                chapter 14 (Application Debugging Checklist.) are very useful - especially the first two.

                                Myke's "Programming & Customizing PICmicro Microcontrollers" book is worth buying. However, I am uncertain about recomending this book. Most of the information it contains can be found in the Microchip data sheets. If you like having the handy code snippets, the 16 bit numbers code, the debugging checklist, and other miscellaneous information handy then I recommend it.

                                1 out of 5 stars It's the accuracy, stupid. This is a reference book........2001-11-16

                                There's a lot of great information in this companion to Myke's "Programming and Customizing PICmicro Microcontrollers".

                                But it's inexcusable to repeat the poor organization, spelling, and accuracy of that book. That book began, "Though may (sic) name is on the cover of this book...". Okay, it's a typo and we all know what he meant. But in this "reference work", errors still abound. To cite just one example, some of the pin-out diagrams on page 12 are wrong. "Hey Myke, we're using this information to solder circuits here. Can someone check this stuff before it gets printed!"

                                Much of the content originates with the source book, but the choice of what is included is odd. For example, using the index, one can easily find wiring diagrams and code to connect LCD panels. But looking up some common programming commands requires going to broad information categories, rather than indexing all of the reserved words.

                                This book is still extremely useful and the Author is VERY knowledgeable. But he also frustrates his readers. For the same reasons that carpenters say "Measure twice, cut once" this book could have benefited from more careful planning and proofing.

                                4 out of 5 stars Packed with stuff.......2001-09-27

                                This is a good book with a dabble of info on just about everything. I have only begun to make use of its potential. Keep in mind it is a pocket reference, so it's geared toward people who are already along their way knowing PICs fairly well. If you fall into that category this book is worth its cost without a doubt.
