              Book Description

On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend is the critically acclaimed collection of regional travel guides that offer detailed reviews of the best bed and breakfasts, inns, hotels, and resorts that welcome dogs, as well as fun things to do with them once you arrive.

The Habgoods ask a number of questions and perform extensive research before even considering a lodging for inclusion. They then head out on the road to visit one. Their insiders perspective on each establishment is unmatched, as is their ability to accurately assess the attitude of the staff toward people who travel with their dogs. As a result, readers learn about the best rooms and amenities, the cuisine (for both canines and people), and any intriguing activities on the premises or in the area.

The Habgoods dont depend on paw, diamond, or star ratings. Instead, travelers form their own opinions after reading the detailed two-page descriptions. The Habgoods never accept fees for inclusion into their books, ensuring their assessments remain independent and based on merit.

Their reviews are so personal and detailed that the Los Angeles Times commented that "these aren't just books for dog owners, but any traveler." Moreover, Pamela Brandt of the New York Daily News feels that, "the authors have a far more appealing approach than other animal-friendly accommodation guides: full and very inviting descriptions instead of the usual name/address lists."

5 out of 5 stars 4 Paws Up...Travel With Your Buddy Made Easy.......2006-06-14

A friend of mine, was recently telling me how, he just likes to pick up and get away for a few days, but as much as he loves his dog, just didn't want to take the time to search out lodgings that were pet friendly. I then remembered this book, that was a big help to me, "On the Road Again With Man's Best Friend(West Coast edition) by Dawn and Robert Habgood. It is like a dog owner's bible for traveling with your favorite friend.

The book is well researched and has an excellent and plentiful selection of lodgings that will welcome you and your dog. There are tips for the traveling dog, reservations services for Bed and Breakfasts, phone numbers for the various inns, rates(and if there are any extra fees for your pet), addresses, and a good summary of the accommodations and things to do and see in the area. You will also find a key to abbreviations, and other helpful hints.

This West Coast and British Columbia Edition covers the area from San Diego on up. There is also an edition that covers the West Coast just up to Seattle as well. It is sectioned by state(Calif, Oregon, Washington), with a map of the areas, pinpointing the lodging. There are also lists and phone numbers for many other places to call, that did not get a write up.

There are other editions of this book, you may want to check out for other areas. East Coast, New England, British Columbia, Southwest, Southeast, North West and North America. This edition is nearly 10 years old, so I imagine that some of the prices and policies may have changed, and it is probably a good idea to call ahead of time to check these things out.

Looks like there are some great deals on some used editions by the outside sellers. The book is a great time saver, worth every penny for those of us that can't bear to leave our babies at home, and may keep poor old Rover from winding up in a kennel.

4 paws up for this great book....Laurie

5 out of 5 stars Great Accommodations all along the West Coast.......1999-09-10

I've used the West Coast version of On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend for many years and have found many gems all along the West Coast. We've stayed with our dogs on house boats in Washington and British Columbia, a dude ranch in southern Washington, and in many of the neat waterside accommodations along the Oregon coast. We not only rely on the Habgoods' excellent descriptions, but also on their extensive appendix where there are hundreds of other dog-friendly places to stay that cover the entire West Coast. We live in the Seattle area and have yet to use it for our adventures in California, but look forward to doing so soon!

3 out of 5 stars Great information, if you're traveling in California.......1999-07-26

The book had excellent information on each B&B, Resort, etc.. However, it was very disappointing that most of the book was about lodging in California. The title indicates that it's for the "West Coast". I expected more information on each state, not just California. The listings for WA, OR and BC are limited.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for man's best friend's friends.......1998-12-01

We've found the Habgood's "On the Road Again..." books invaluable on our travels with our wonderful Golden Retriever, Murphy. Each location is given a complete review with tips about sights of interest nearby. We have stayed in many quaint B & B's, up-scale hotel/spas, beachside resorts, and charming inns, all found through these books. Murphy has enjoyed all of our visits and gives the Habgood's books a "tails up".

5 out of 5 stars Great book that covers large area.......1997-10-14

This is a wonderful resource. I used it to find a B&B in Seattle for $45/night when the cheapest dog-accepting Motel 6 was $70 (*without* breakfast). I wish there were more entries, but it would be a much larger book! :) For California specifically, I would go with "The California Dog Lover's Companion" by Maria Goodavage; it has info on places to visit as well as places to stay. But for B&B's and hotels specifically, "On The Road Again With Man's Best Friend-West Coast Edition" is an excellent one to have. I would not hesitate to recommend it for your Dogs & Traveling bookshelf.

Each year, like a herd of lemmings racing over the proverbial cliff, thousands of adolescents pass through the gate of Parris Island, United States Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Their reasons for joining the Marines vary as widely as their chances for success, but they all share an ignorance of what the next three months hold in store. Upon graduation from high school, Phillip Spiegel decides that joining the Marine Corps is the best way to break the stifling yoke that his parents have placed about his neck, without taking the horrifying step of getting a real job. With the assistance of less-than-candid recruiters, Phillip makes his escape from parental bonds to the open and welcoming arms of Uncle Sam. Growing up isn't easy for anybody, especially for those who do their best to avoid it.

This is a great read for former Marines, current Marines and Marine wanna-bes. In fact, just about everyone will enjoy this book! Funny, sometimes poignant, story of young men coming of age and finding a sense of pride. The stories reminded me of Sgt Bilco, Stripes, and other military comedies - this would be a good movie! Share this with your friends and family.

Can't wait to read what Sherman Mayle has on tap - wonder what Phillie will be up to in the next book?!!

                        Book Description

Prominent media scholars such as Herbert Schiller have long noted the implications of Western--especially American--cultural influence on peoples of the developing Third World. Media, Sex, Violence, and Drugs in the Global Village provides a multicultural analysis of the impact of globalized Western media, including movies, syndicated radio programs, the Internet, and satellite and cable television programs. Looking specifically at themes of sex, violence, and drugs, an international cast of media scholars offers case studies of countries grappling with the influences of both Western cultural imports and similar local productions.

                          Book Description

The 1980s saw the rise of Ronald Reagan and the New Right in American politics, the popularity of programs such as thirtysomething and Dynasty on network television, and the increasingly widespread use of VCRs, cable TV, and remote control in American living rooms. In Seeing Through the Eighties, Jane Feuer critically examines this most aesthetically complex and politically significant period in the history of American television in the context of the prevailing conservative ideological climate. With wit, humor, and an undisguised appreciation of TV, she demonstrates the richness of this often-slighted medium as a source of significance for cultural criticism and delivers a compelling decade-defining analysis of our most recent past.
With a cast of characters including Michael, Hope, Elliot, Nancy, Melissa, and Gary; Alexis, Krystle, Blake, and all the other Carringtons; not to mention Maddie and David; even Crockett and Tubbs, Feuer smoothly blends close readings of well-known programs and analysis of television’s commercial apparatus with a thorough-going theoretical perspective engaged with the work of Baudrillard, Fiske, and others. Her comparative look at Yuppie TV, Prime Time Soaps, and made-for-TV-movie Trauma Dramas reveals the contradictions and tensions at work in much prime-time programming and in the frustrations of the American popular consciousness. Seeing Through the Eighties also addresses the increased commodification of both the producers and consumers of television as a result of technological innovations and the introduction of new marketing techniques. Claiming a close relationship between television and the cultures that create and view it, Jane Feuer sees the eighties through televison while seeing through television in every sense of the word.

5 out of 5 stars An insightful look at 1980s TV and American culture.......2001-03-06

Seeing Through the Eighties is an important work in the study of television and American cultural history. In it, Feuer examines specifics of shows from one of America's Golden Ages of TV - shows like Miami Vice, Moonlighting and thirtysomething (and others!) to reveal their modernist and postmodernist tendencies. She pits her examples from these shows against American happenings such as the rise of yuppie culture. Proving that taping commercials can sometimes actually help rather than hinder the viewing experience, Feuer also looks at the ads that were run alongside these shows (where possible) to draw out more insights about the era.

Feuer is wonderfully smart, and she's great fun, too - her book doesn't shy away from using the first person occasionally, and it keeps the read from becoming overly scholarly and dry.

Some of the concepts discussed here aren't the easiest to grasp, but once everything clicks, you'll notice your heart start beating a little faster when you stumble upon a rerun of Miami Vice.

                          5 out of 5 stars Feuer is a Genius.......2000-01-07

The previous reviewer obviously did not understand the complex theories presented in the book. Feuer is presenting a "post-modern" theory of drama series in the 1980's. She describes 1980's to be the golden age of the TV Drama and a postmodern view from the other grand age of TV Drama of the 1950's. Feuer not only presents a unique way of critiquing TV Drama, but presents theories that can be argued to other genres both in the TV spectrum and the film world. I would also like to point out that Feuer also wrote a book entitled "The Hollywood Muscial" and was quoted as being brilliant by the New York Times. I would like to recommend both books by Feuer and encourage other readers to try to understand the views presented in both books. I hope everyone else will enjoy them as much as I have...

                          1 out of 5 stars liberal gas-passing.......1999-12-30

there is no limit to the extent that most (communist)knee jerk liberals will utilize to tear down the r.reagan legacy. this man did rescue us from the carter malaise and also saved us from the carter mishandling of foreign policy. all thinking people do understand that r.r was our national savior. this book is just another example of an author attempting to pander to what the media is attempting to feed the ignorant few, there would be no other option for her to be published. do not buy this book.(remember pravda).

                          Book Description

Design, configure, and manage MPLS TE to optimize network performance

Almost every busy network backbone has some congested links while others remain underutilized. That's because shortest-path routing protocols send traffic down the path that is shortest without considering other network parameters, such as utilization and traffic demands. Using Traffic Engineering (TE), network operators can redistribute packet flows to attain more uniform distribution across all links. Forcing traffic onto specific pathways allows you to get the most out of your existing network capacity while making it easier to deliver consistent service levels to customers at the same time.

Cisco(r) Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) lends efficiency to very large networks, and is the most effective way to implement TE. MPLS TE routes traffic flows across the network by aligning resources required by a given flow with actual backbone capacity and topology. This constraint-based routing approach feeds the network route traffic down one or more pathways, preventing unexpected congestion and enabling recovery from link or node failures.

Traffic Engineering with MPLS provides you with information on how to use MPLS TE and associated features to maximize network bandwidth. This book focuses on real-world applications, from design scenarios to feature configurations to tools that can be used in managing and troubleshooting MPLS TE. Assuming some familiarity with basic label operations, this guide focuses mainly on the operational aspects of MPLS TE-how the various pieces work and how to configure and troubleshoot them. Additionally, this book addresses design and scalability issues along with extensive deployment tips to help you roll out MPLS TE on your own network.

"Eric and Ajay work in the development group at Cisco that built Traffic Engineering. They are among those with the greatest hands-on experience with this application. This book is the product of their experience."

                          Eric Osborne, Ajay Simha

As most CCIE's do, I ventured out in search of my next technical mastery. After reading the MPLS and VPN Architectures book from Cisco Press, I decided to venture onward into the Traffic Engineering aspect of MPLS. WoW! There sure is a lot of information out there and this book does a good job on covering the in depth details of the topic. I would however not recommend this book if you haven't read the first book mentioned as a primer/base for your MPLS knowledge because this one dives in deep very quickly.

I work for a large service provider and we are designing a new MPLS based network to support several very large customers global networks therefore I need to be on top of the MPLS game. Not only does this book cover the MPLS TE concepts very well but also gets in to the tough areas of QOS such as RSVP, Diffserv and even into SPF!

The chapters that I found the most rewarding were chapters 9 and 10 because not only are the diagrams easy to follow and apply to the topic at hand but they discuss the "knobs" that's be tweaked to make MPLS do exactly as you want it to which is the goal of this book.

This book also covers topics such as IS-IS, Multicast routing, LDP-TDP, and the innards of MPLS as well as TE.

                          I'm up to P.274.

Two reasons I bought this book
                          - I needed to know about MPLS TE
                          - I don't think there are any other MPLS TE books around.

I've worked in a SP for 3 years on MPLS/VPN so I'm familiar with labelly things.

On the whole it's good but not great. It is NOT in the same class as Jeff Doyle for clarity.

The book has no Glossary - incredible!

P.48 Fig. 2-10, text box on top right needs English fixed.
P.49 Does VC merge use AAL5 'last cell' bit in ATM header? If so, say so.
P.62 Hellos & Keepalives 'explanation' is confused.
P.93 I found the explanation on Affinity very confusing and had to read it many time to comprehend it. I expect to have to read this a

few times but not many. Eg. I gather Attribute is what is configured on link and Affinity is what is configured on Headend and is

therefore carried in protocol (which protocol: CSPT or RSVP-TE?)
P.96 "Tunnel affinities and link attributes can be confusing" then rework the explanation so it's clear.
P.115 Table 4-1 called "Class Map Matches". Is this right?
P.143 to 158 All the packet contents should have been put in an appendix.
P.146 "Yes, this is confusing", for something which is quite simple.
P.160 *** Excellent idea putting line numbers in so they can be refered to in explanation. ***
P.172 Paragraph starts "This can be confusing to most people". What a negative way to start the explanation! This is code for 'we

didn't work long enough at the explanation long enough to make it clear'.
P.177 "top link to gsr8" and there is only one link.
                          P.185 "Example 4-32" should be "Example 4-34".
P.186 "Example 4-0" in 3 places should be "Example 4-35", "Example 4-36", "Example 4-37" respecively.
P.236 Needs clarification & correction to,
"Figure 5-11 shows an *abnormal* scenario in which changing the metric *before* SPF, rather than *after* makes a difference. Note that

text on Table 5-17 correctly says *before*.

P.242 In table 5-21 and just after it should emphasise which is unexpected behaviour and why.
P.242 Last paragraph "Router F" should be "Router G". "B->D->E->F" should be "B->D->E->G". "C->E->F" should be
P.270 2nd bullet point "In both the ip2mpls ans mpls2mpls pop cases.." is confused since 'ip2mpls' is not label popping but label

imposition. However this is in sync with paragraph which follows it "...if you set a packet's EXP values differently from the

underlying IP packet (which is ip2mpls), or if change the EXP values in the top of a label stack (which is mpls2mpls).
P.274, Fig. 6-8. There is no explanation for why ip2mpls and mpls2mpls don't follow the rules of P.273 Table 6-5. Presumably it's so

that at mpls2ip, the EXP overwriting it's equivalent DSCP can be seen. Same comment for Figs. 6-9 and 6-10.

Cisco Press had no errata for this book 3nov03.

I'm sure there were other reviews of this book when I looked here a few weeks ago ?!?!?!

                          5 out of 5 stars Information overload.......2003-12-17

Information Overload! The authors Eric Osborne and co-author Ajay Simha are definitely traffic engineering gurus! I don't know where to start on this book. Ok first things first. If you haven't read MPLS and VPN Architectures or don't have a firm understanding of MPLS and MPLS VPN's this is not the book for you. It is however a great , great book it you actually know what you are reading!

I work for an ISP that is currently rolling out MPLS in the network, and my department will be doing customer support once implemented. I was hoping to get a vague understanding of traffic engineering concepts before the product was rolled out. Man was I wrong! I definitely think this book gives you a FIRM understanding of everything that is MPLS TE. I would say that it has definitely bought me up to speed on implementing tunnels and how IGP's and VPN's interact with TE. This is definitely going to be desktop reference for me for years to come.

My favorite chapters in the book definitely have to be Chapter 9 (Network Design with MPLS TE) and Chapter 10 (MPLS TE deployment tips). There were some pretty good diagrams there that really put the whole thing together for me. As well as case studies and issues that you may run into when implementing MPLS TE.

As with all Cisco books the reading is a little dry, but very technical. The second chapter that went over LDP was a little too in depth for my taste. I find it fascinating on how complex LDP actually is (chapter 2 is about 50 pages if I'm correct).

5 out of 5 stars The Premier Reference on MPLS and TE.......2002-08-28

For Internet backbone engineers, and those who wish to be, Traffic Engineering, or TE is a key skill. From my experience there is no greater expert in this area than Eric Osborne. This book is a great way for MPLS novice's to learn and add to their skills, and an essential "bookshelf" reference for any experienced network engineers. With an easy style, and a clear and concise manner, Eric and his co-author, Ajay Simha, provide a realistic guide to MPLS TE, including RSVP, SNMP, and troubleshooting. Unlike many similar works, it is clearly grounded in the reality of large networks, rather than theoretical vendor simulations. Eric and Ajay are right up there with Khalid Raza, Bruce Caslow, and Jeff Doyle, in terms of the "essential" authors. Highly recommended!
