Book Description

Finally—A Pregnancy Book That Won't Put Men to Sleep
My Boys Can Swim! tells real men everything they really want to know about pregnancy, such as: How much is it going to cost? Why does your wife primp before seeing her doctor when she hasn't put a stitch of make-up on for you in months? And, most important, what's it going to do to your sex life?
This rollicking, laugh-out-loud book is for expectant dads in search of bottom-line pregnancy information, without all that boring touchy-feely stuff you find in those books written for women. Inside you'll discover helpful—and hilarious—information and insights on such topics as:
The Maternity Wardrobe: "A key part of the maternity wardrobe is maternity underwear—parachute-like undies big enough to fit an NFL defensive lineman."
Baby Names: "Don't give your kids mockable names like Thaddeus, which is Greek for 'I'm a dork and should be beaten up.'"
The Birth: "No one told me it's normal that babies' heads can be misshapen at birth. I was convinced that my wife gave birth to Veldar, the conehead."

5 out of 5 stars First time parents...........2007-10-19

My husband and I just found our we were expecting our first child, so being super excited I found myself online buying tons of books. I realized I was looking for tons of super detailed information, which would go righ over my husbands head, because he doesn't need to know ALL the details in the begining... So I started looking at it from a mans perspective, and after receiving this book I knew I made the right choice. It is written by a man and takes pregnancy from a differant direction, great book, great laughs... I highly recommend this book, enjoy....

4 out of 5 stars Perfect book for dads-to-be.......2007-09-24

My husband used to read books all the time. But now only has time for things about the length of a newspaper or magazine article. This book is really short and funny. So it keeps his attention enough to actually be informed as to what is going on. He reads a little at a time while things progress. And has laughed out-loud on a couple of occasions.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for new dads!.......2007-09-18

My husband LOVED this book. It's written from a husband's point of view which is hilarious. While it doesn't provide tons of medical info, it gives just enough for my husband to understand some of what I'm going through. Each night he read some of it outloud so we could both enjoy it. The humor in the book was great and it has helped him realize that neither of us is going crazy...all of this is normal. I definitely recommend this book to any dad. They will certainly enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Great for the father to be.......2007-09-16

My husband enjoyed this book and learning about what to expect. The humor in it is great and the topics are right on target in each trimester. My husband kept telling me what he learned from the book.

1 out of 5 stars For dumb dads.......2007-09-13

This was a totally dumbed down book. My husband actually likes being a father and was insulted by this book. This is for a dad who likes to sit on the couch, drink beers, and not do stuff with his kids. Sorry book.

      Book Description

Vitally linked to the Caribbean and southern Europe as well as to the Confederacy, the Cigar City of Tampa, Florida, never fit comfortably into the biracial mold of the New South. In Southern Discomfort, the esteemed historian Nancy A. Hewitt explores the interactions among distinct groups of women--native-born white, African American, and Cuban and Italian immigrant women--that shaped women's activism in this vibrant, multiethnic city.

Around the turn of the twentieth century, several historical currents converged in Tampa. The city was subject to the state's newly imposed forms of legal segregation from 1885 on, and it served as a center for exiles organizing on behalf of the Cuban War of Independence and as the disembarkation point for U.S. troops heading to Cuba in 1898. The city was the entrept for thousands of Cuban and Italian immigrants seeking work in the booming cigar trade, and it attracted dozens of itinerant radicals eager to address locally based revolutionary clubs, mutual aid societies, and labor unions.

Tampa was also home to an astonishing array of voluntary and reform organizations among Black and white native-born women. Hewitt shows how women's interests were transformed by Jim Crow, progressive reform, and homegrown and imported radicalism, and how the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain dramatically reshaped Tampa women's activism, inspiring large numbers of Latin women to enter the public sphere.

Southern Discomfort emphasizes the process by which women forged and reformulated their activist identities from Reconstruction through the U.S. declaration of war against Spain in April 1898, the industrywide cigar strike of 1901, and the emergence of progressive reform and labor militancy. This masterful volume also recasts our understanding of southern history by demonstrating how Tampa's triracial networks alternately challenged and reinscribed the South's biracial social and political order.

        Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Funny in Every Way.......2001-10-23

Bill Hoest is one of the best funny men around. And Leroy and Loretta (the Lockhorns) are his champions. These two blast one another in every possible way, and their marriage counselors as well, while delivering tons of laughs.

If you want to have a really good time, lift the cares of the world off your shoulders for awhile, and enjoy a tremendous laugh or two along the way, turn to the Lockhorns. It is a book I have read more than once, and I laugh outloud every time.

I highly recommend this book and any book by Bill Hoest about the Lockhorns.

        5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2001-10-23

I love the Lockhorns. Larry and Loretta fight their way through married life like two champions who just will not go down with a punch. Bill Hoest has a really good look at life in all its inexactness and irony. And we can laugh. There is a lot of Larry and Loretta in every relationship and it helps to see the real pros going at one another and still managing to stay together. If Larry and Loretta can stick it out, so can we.

There is real fun here, and that is the main reason to visit with Larry and Loretta. Fun. You will laugh with each turn of the page, and be truely sorry for the end of the book.

I highly recommend the Lockhorns by Bill Hoest.

Everyone's battling couple are at it again. These strips from the 1970's are from creator Bill Hoest, not his wife who currently writes the strip. Not appearing in enough newspapers, this is perfect for anyone who needs their Lockhorn fix.

Leroy drips venom and Loretta is perfect as his long suffering wife. Leroy always criticizes his wife's cooking and once he told her he wanted to use it for exhibit A. In this mood, my favorite strip in the book is where they are eating out and Leroy says to the waitress, right in front of Loretta, "What do you mean home cooking? Why this is delicious!!"

Have a hard day at work? This is the perfect antidote to make you forget your day. Buy it right away.

                                  Book Description

How do goals of education and entertainment conflict in popularizations of science? In schools? Robot World explores these questions through a case study of a hands-on science museum/theme park in a tourist center in the upper Midwestern United States. Mixing ethnography, autobiography, and science fiction, this book examines science's public cultures. In unraveling this dual interest of education and entertainment, it looks at how the association of wonder and science works ideologically. It explores how the technologies in the museum become props in specific racial and gender identity formations, and it examines the experiences of the body in the hands-on museum as the ultimate science lesson.

Staging the Real traces the evolution of the various categories of "reality" programs which have come to dominate our screens over the last decade. The book focuses on issues such as the changes in the broadcasting environment which have given rise to such programs, the relationship they have to other popular TV genres and the huge appeal that shows such as Big Brother have for contemporary audiences. The book also seeks to measure the cultural significance of these new formats. Do they reflect a more general cultural malaise or should we measure their popularity more in terms of the changing expectations which modern audiences bring to TV entertainment?

According to Macromedia, there are few more qualified or capable to teach the ins and outs of Dreamweaver than author James Lowery. This high praise is well earned with the Dreamweaver 3 Bible, a comprehensive manual that covers everything from basic site creation to working with Fireworks, as well as using CSS, DHTML, XML, and multimedia.

Beginners and intermediate users will appreciate the solid foundation provided in the opening 12 chapters. Readers are given a quick tour of the work environment, shown how a sample site is built up from scratch, and introduced to all the features of Dreamweaver. Here and throughout Dreamweaver 3 Bible, the text is augmented by frequent screenshots (from the Windows platform, although the text includes Macintosh instructions and commands) and applicable generated HTML code. More importantly, the book provides ample reasons for why things work the way they do and examples of how a feature might be put to use.

Other sections of the book cover frames, tables, forms, objects, behaviors, integrating Shockwave and Flash, working with layers, creating templates, using the Library, and many more topics. The appendices cover the companion text editors (Homesite 4.5 for Windows users, BBedit 5 for Mac users) and CourseBuilder for creating instructional Web pages. The companion CD-ROM includes 30-day trials of Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, and CourseBuilder, plus lots of extensions and sample files mentioned in the text.

Changes since the last edition include all the new features of Dreamweaver 3: the History palette, Design Notes, and the enhanced interrelationship with Fireworks, for example. Many processes are now automated in the latest version, like creating a command out of a group of steps from the History palette. Within Dreamweaver 3 Bible, new features like these are set in a different font and marked by an icon in the margin, making it easy for those already familiar with Dreamweaver to quickly access what's new.

One great benefit of a well-written book such as this is the confidence one gains with the application--confidence to look beyond the text and explore on one's own. This is especially fulfilling given Dreamweaver's expandability. By helping readers customize Dreamweaver, the text saves hours and hours of work time. --Angelynn Grant

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets........2001-05-12

Beginners and advanced users of Dreamweaver 3 should find that this book covers pretty much all they need to know, anything else being down to how they wish to implement the options available in order to execute a web site that is speedy and efficient in operation: a challenge in itself, and not something that can be laid at the door of Dreamweaver or any other web design package. What I'm saying is that this book is comprehensive with respect to the operation of Dreamweaver, but that doesn't make the reader into a web site designer. It's how you use those tools that matter, and you don't need a lot of them. But Dreamweaver makes it a lot simpler to try out various schemes.

The only criticisms of this book are that a beginner will get the impression that they have to read a huge amount of stuff before even making a start, so they'll have to be patient. And a more advanced user will be familiar with a fair chunk of the content. Nevertheless, its clear and simple writing style, and modest cost, make up for these minor shortcomings.

A good companion to this book would be Sybex's `Complete HTML' to add an overview of what works consistently with IE, Netscape, and their variations.

5 out of 5 stars It is a really great book for both beginners and pros!.......2001-02-17

This has been indeed been a great book! Its instructions were clear and sufficient as well as covering all the important possibilities ad variants. Each time I had a question in my head, I can be sure to find a paragraph that seems to address my question directly! What I also liked was the writing style, there were none too many "corny" jokes or "trying too hard to be funny" kind of prose and it got to the point in a straight and gentle manner. In fact, as a result of this book, I decided that I will only buy the "Bible" series of books!!! Which, I unfortunately found out, were not as good as Lowery's work. The Dreamweaver 3 Bible is a prize today because of Lowery's true deep understanding of his material! This book allowed me to learn the basic stuff at an advanced level (things I already thought I knew all about but....) as well as learn new advanced stuff! What I liked most about the CD that came with it was the pdf version of the book! Now I can carry the book with me in my laptop without having to lug the book around. That means when I am the move, I can still learn Dreamweaver or use it as a reference - thanks!

This book is an excellent resource for any developer that uses Dreamweaver. Even if you don't have the time to sit and go through the book in detail, it is so well organised that whenever you want to find out about a particular topic, it is always easily found... I consider myself pretty fussy when it comes to computer books. It is rare that I will take the time to review a book here on Amazon. If I do it is because I either loved the book or I want to warn others from wasting money on it. Well fear not with this book my friends! The authors go to great lengths to reveal the many secrets of this wonderful program. For the novice reader there are explanations about those basic topics of HTML, forms, the program interface, Javascript, imagemaps, frames, etc. Then the book moves on into the tougher stuff like CGI, ActiveX Components, Objects, Behaviors, Events, Actions, using Dreamweaver with Fireworks, incorporating multimedia, style sheets, layers, timelines, XML...get the idea? It is a BIG book (over 1,000 pages!) Jam packed with tons of information. It is both a tutorial and a reference book. I have already warned others they face death if mine disappears! (Just kidding...I would only inflict a little torture like maybe a paper cut or steal their copy of this book!) I urge users of all levels to get this book! You won't be sorry!! Thanks go out to Joseph and Paul for their fantastic effort!! Much appreciated!

I am relatively new to the world of web design and had never seen Dreamweaver before, let alone known how to use it. I am only halfway through the book right now but I feel safe saying that it is an excellent book. It is well laid out and full of information including notes, tips, warnings, and other tidbits to keep you wanting more. I really enjoy this book and am already looking into getting other "Bible" books if they are near as good as this one. The only reason I gave the book 4 stars is that I haven't read any other books on Dreamweaver and I am new to the program. But if you are anything like me, it's definately deserving of 5 stars! Hope you enjoy it.

If your paperback copy of Dreamweaver 3 Bible is dog-eared or you're delving into the more advanced realms of Web site production, this hardcover Gold version might be just the thing for you. It contains all of the material that the "non-Gold" edition has, and it sets a good foundation for beginners and intermediates by clearly explaining the work environment, tools, and features: frames, tables, forms, objects, behaviors, how to integrate Shockwave and Flash, how to work with layers, how to create templates, how to use the Library, and more.

The new material in this version shows how to integrate and access databases from within your Dreamweaver documents by using different methods--UltraDev, ColdFusion, Lasso Studio, and Tango. A new chapter introduces the latest frontier in Web design--the wireless platform--and shows how to use the Nokia WML Studio extension for Dreamweaver. Another chapter introduces Andromedia Aria, and shows how to tailor tracking and site analysis.

The new 32-page color section not only provides more detailed screen shots for different features that are covered in the text, but also shows off several sites that were created by using Dreamweaver. Whereas the paperback edition came with one CD-ROM that was full of goodies, this Gold version has two--offering trial versions of many of the applications that are referenced in the book; all of the code examples that are used; and a bounty of extensions, including behaviors, objects, commands, and browser profiles.

Weighing in at around five pounds, this hefty tome might strain your wrist, but it'll bring you up to speed on the latest in Web production and Dreamweaver. --Angelynn Grant

5 out of 5 stars Finally an excellent book for Dreamweaver 3.......2000-10-23

Dreamweaver has quickly become one of the more popular web design toold available. Its concept of web design with minimal coding appeals to many new designers. This is also a downfall, especially with more experienced designers who like to type all their code themselves.

Most of the books available for Dreamweaver have focused on how to use the basic functions of Dreamweaver, ignoring things like database connectivity with ColdFusion.

This book not only covers the basics of HTML, but it goes into some more advanced topics like CF. I would reccomend this book to anyone who is serious about web design with Dreamweaver.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing book for an amazing program........2000-09-13

It is very apparent that Joseph Lowery has not only a complete understanding of the many Internet technologies available to developers but also has an understanding for the way in which we most efficiently learn them. This book is not only 100% comprehensive but it also presents the material in an easy-to-understand bottoms-up approach that would give novices and professions alike an excellent understanding for web developement and Dreamweaver's role in that development. This book also provides numerous examples for both simple and advanced ways to enhance sites with Dreamweaver's many built-in behaviors.
