Book Description

Interest in our nation's weather patterns is rising -- as witnessed in the popularity of the Weather Channel -- and this guide is the most popular reference to every type of weather system, cloud formation, and atmospheric phenomenon common to North America. The 378 dramatic photographs capture cloud types, precipitation, storms, twisters, and optical phenomena such as the Northern Lights. Essays with accompanying maps and illustrations discuss the earth's atmosphere, weather systems, cloud formation, and development of tornadoes and many other weather events.

5 out of 5 stars definitive guide to weather.......2007-10-21

I believe this book was previously known as the Field Guide to Clouds, not sure exactly when the change took place but I'm glad to have finally re-found this book. What first allured me to this series when I was a child were the amazing photographs in the middle. Some very rare species of clouds all beautifully captured. The information contained within this book is very well organised, and as said in the title it fully lives up to its field guide reputation. By identifying the clouds you see in the sky via the photographs you can then follow the page number to the description of the formation and what weather you can expect from it. Alternatively, there are essays in the beginning describing several weather phenomenon and their life cycles, where they can be expected in North America and much much more.

This is a fantastic book for anyone interested in weather and particularly clouds. While made with North America in mind, anyone could enjoy this book especially the brilliant photography included with it.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading For All Pilots.......2005-10-04

What I find very valuable about this book is the fact that it is loaded with illustrations of different kinds of meteorological phenomena. For a pilot, it is important to understand what sort of weather you are going to be flying into. If you don't spend a lot of time studying meteorology, it can be difficult to conceptualize what kind of cloud formation is ahead of you. Some of the pilots' literature have rather weak illustrations.

This book is an excellent supplement to any pilot's training manual in providing visual aids for learning about spotting weather phenomnena.

Also, in general, it is very enjoyable to page through the book, as the quality of photography is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Guide.......2005-02-05

At first, I didn't think this book would be very good. After perusing it, I changed my mind and bought a copy for myself. It has a lot of weather stuff and a good amount of different clouds and material on lightning. It is the traditional Audubon format (plates in the middle and text in the first and last sections of the book). Good enough for my dough.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning photography and detail........2004-07-09

The Audubon Guide to weather is a one and only purchase for meteorologists. The photographs are simply spectacular, particularly the cumulonimbus and cumulus congestus, which are mysterious and somewhat intimidating at a distance. Since I reside in the desert, this guides causes me to long for cumulonimbus towers or even an occasional cirrocumulus formation. The content and system are convenient, as referring to the right back of the book for photo explanation is great organization. The photographs of impending thunderstorms are stunning. A very frightening and important warning cloud is the mesocyclone. This formation indicates a tornado later in the day. The guide could also assist in creating a Tornado Warning issue in a specific area. The whole Audubon series should be put into your private collection, as they are known for extremely helpful guides and environment contribution.
There a two editions which do not differ in very many respects. Economy Press, which edition is long out of print, lacks a few photos compared to the contemporary edition. The new press is superior anyway, and has very clean transfers. The very old Economy Press is not as detailed as the new edition. Since only one edition of this sensation guide is available, it should easily be purchased with an impressive price. The older version used to be hardback, and had a different illustration on the front cover, still mentioning the authors however. The new print is leatherback, which is easy to carry and not bulky. The Economy Press may last a bit longer, but the new edition is more helpful in cloud identification.
Many Audubon field guides are recommended, including their guides to butterflies, insects, and birds. Along with the Petersons, these guides should be sought out.

5 out of 5 stars Very good, even if you live outside the US.......2002-08-04

I ordered this book after reading other peoples reviews. Something in particular I was looking for was information about clouds (types/formations, significance).

This book has exactly the information I was looking for (and more); detailed information about clouds - including hunderds of pictures - allow me to identify and name the different cloud types. It also explains very well how this all relates to the overall weather situation.

Although the book is targetted towards North American weather, I did not find this a major disadvantage. Weather situations in the US and Canada are mostly used as examples, and knowing the general European situation, information is easily put into context.

When ordering I was a little bit worried this was one more popular weather book with the standard stuff. No sir! This book definitely also serves the more serious weather observer.

Most of us take weather for granted--except when it gets extreme. But there are fascinating weather effects happening all the time, and a patient observer can see some very interesting things, like waterspouts, golfball-sized hail, and lenticular (saucer-shaped) clouds. This guide is your key to identifying and understanding weather phenomena. The first part of the book explains what weather is, how it is measured, and how you can build your own observation devices at home. The next section is a thorough guide to cloud types, storms, and precipitation that will have you thinking like a meteorologist in no time. Lastly, there's a well-organized reference section with a glossary and more weather resources. Like all the guides in this series (Wildflowers, Insects, Birds, Rocks and Minerals, and Mammals), this First Field Guide to weather is a great family resource, perfect for kids and adults. (Ages 8 and up) --Therese Littleton

Book Description

This colorful, pocket-size field guide brings youngsters face-to-face with all kinds of amazing atmospheric weather phenomena. An introduction shows children how to use the book, while the glossary and index add to the reference value.

4 out of 5 stars Fine first guide........2004-07-13

The Audubon First Guide to Weather is one of the best in the series of Audubon First Guides. The book has a decent number of weather formation listings, including: cumulus congestus, cumulonimbus, cirrus, mesocyclones and quite a few others. Stating that the book is kiddish is quite strange, as this book and its content does not seem geared toward kids particularly at all. It is a fine guide for everyone to use in the field.
There is only one, less recent edition of this guide sold on the market. It is leatherback like the advanced Audubon Guides, so it will come in as a useful reference.

      Book Description

Economist Gerald Friedman, in an astute comparative study of the evolution of labor movements in the United States and France in the period from 1876 to 1914, illuminates not only the distinctive turns to syndicalism in France and craft unionism in the United States, but also the unique impact each form of unionization had on the shaping of the French and the U.S. states. He analyzes an enormous amount of data--extending estimates of union membership back to 1884 for France and 1880 for the United States--to present a lucid picture of the growth and outcome of both movements.

The historic weakness of radical political movements in the United States has perplexed scholars of American labor for over a century. Friedman reevaluates the problem of American "exceptionalism" through his examination of the labor movement, exploring the constraints placed on radicalism by employers and state officials. He shows that a one-sided approach focused exclusively on the role of the working class has rendered labor history static: historical change is something that also happens to workers when circumstances change for workers. Friedman's perspective brings new dynamism to labor history by incorporating the impact of other social actors and the conflicts between them.

If not for Mencken's absurd racial theories (sadly common at that time)hovering in the background, this would get five stars. Conversely, there are many witty, incisive aspects to his criticism on display in Smart Set, which is also richly represented in the more comprehensive Mencken Chrestomathy. Smart Set is an interesting historical document. Unfortunately, many of his political criticisms remain applicable to today's buncombe peddlers. He was not afraid to challenge the establishment of his time. Availability of an unabridged dictionary, along with a sense of humor, adds to the enrichment.

            Book Description

Thomas Quinn Curtiss has reunited George Jean Nathan with his cohort, H.L. Mencken together with the rest of their set: Theodore Dreiser, Sherwood Anderson, Edmund Wilson, Sean O'Casey, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Alfred Knopf, Jack London and Somerset Maugham. The magnificent abandon of their enterprise and the hard drinking Bohemian wisdom of their writing propelled them and fueled generations of readers with their wit and philosophy. This is a biography of an era of men whose stories could only be written by an eyewitness.

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Names dropped with a thud.......2007-05-01

The term `public intellectual' was not used early in the 20th century, and it is a poor phrase now, but it does describe the position of George Jean Nathan and Henry Mencken in the period from about 1908 to 1926, when they stopped collaborating.

They were two lucky young men, the last to be able to make a living as boulevardiers before radio and film ruined that profession; and because the early 20th century offered plenty to jeer at. They were good at it, but, as Thomas Quinn Curtiss makes painfully clear, they were not very discerning critics.

Their problem was they hardly knew when to stop jeering, although they did from time to time, for example Nathan's promotion of Eugene O'Neill. (In an amusing publisher's advertisement at the back of the book -- how very 1915ish -- O'Neill is credited with making Nathan, while Curtiss avers, but hardly demonstrates, that it was the other way round.)

Mencken is still read but Nathan, who was rather higher style, is known as a name from the '20s, like Djuna Barnes, but his 50 books are forgotten. Excerpts in 'The Smart Set' show why. He kept his boyish looks into his 40s, and his boyish and collegiate humor as well. Looking back, it seems odd that such a callow fellow could have gained the reputation of the suavest American. Though, it's true, the competition was thin.

Curtiss knew both men, though it is not clear how well, and with a lifetime of his own around the theater (as a critic at the International Herald Tribune), he was in a position to have written a well-informed, stylish memoir of two men who were all about style. He did not do so. Perhaps he began too late. `The Smart Set' was published in 1998, when Curtiss was about 83.

It is a confusing mishmash, held together neither by chronology nor theme. Much of it is a listing of names, most of which anybody living in the 21st century has never heard of. The book is replete with anecdotes, which will be of interest to those who are interested by literary and, especially, theatrical anecdotes; but there is little else to recommend them.

A memoir of Mencken and Nathan demands, at least, panache. `The Smart Set' is written with all the verve of an encyclopedia article, and wretchedly edited. Names are misspelled (along with much else), errors of fact are common (Provincetown is not in Rhode Island) and episodes are introduced then never concluded. A wretched production.

                  Book Description

Radio Goes to War is the first comprehensive and in-depth look at the role of domestic radio in the United States during the Second World War. As this study convincingly demonstrates, radio broadcasting played a crucial role both in government propaganda and within the context of the broader cultural and political transformations of wartime America. Gerd Horten's absorbing narrative argues that no medium merged entertainment, propaganda, and advertising more effectively than radio. As a result, America's wartime radio propaganda emphasized an increasingly corporate and privatized vision of America's future, with important repercussions for the war years and the postwar era. Examining radio news programs, government propaganda shows, advertising, soap operas, and comedy programs, Horten situates radio wartime propaganda in the key shift from a Depression-era resentment of big business to the consumer and corporate culture of the postwar period.

4 out of 5 stars Radio Goes To War.......2003-09-03

(excerpted from The Independent Review, Summer 2002)

Horten's slim but rich study of broadcasting in the United States during World War II is a welcome addition to the literatures on radio, propaganda, advertising, and the war. It is a juggling act as well, at times a conventional historical account and at times something closer to cultural studies. It is an impressive performance, and only at the end does Horten drop one of the juggling pins to the floor.

With war propaganda embedded in ads and advertisements embedded in war propaganda - and both embedded in listeners' favorite programs - domestic public relations began to take a new turn. Horten writes sensitively about the interplay between different genres of programming and about the officially sponsored messages they now incorporated. Nor does he neglect the times when programs managed to undermine the official messages. The result is an excellent and multifaceted study that breaks new ground in radio history.

The book's epilogue, unfortunately, moves into a new territory, plunging suddenly into the much larger topic of America's "privatized" postwar culture. In this book, the meaning of privitization is shaky; it seems to refer more to the private sphere than to the private sector, though at times even that distinction gets blurred.

Why does Horten conclude an otherwise well-focused study with a broad new topic that he lacks adequate room to explore? Because one of the themes of the book is that this cultural shift, however you choose to define it, began during World War II, not afterward, and that it can be seen in the wartime alignment of private advertising and public propaganda. It is a substantial and defensible point, and I am glad he makes it, but I wish he had left it at that, reserving the larger social speculations for his next book.

                    4 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2005-08-16

I would highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to get into Visual Basic programming. The section on ADO was excellent, and the examples are very clear. Overall very good.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginner.......2004-05-04

This book is very good for u if don't have any knowledge about vb6. By reading only 45 pages of this book I, was able to make my first programmme. He has put everything in a very neat manner which makes it interestin to read. The examples r also very good.
If u want to learn VB6 this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent learning book.......2002-08-18

I have been programming with access for over 10 years and found the transition to Visual Basic a difficult one. I purchased several books to try to teach myself VB to no avail. When I discovered this book (having been away without my reference book), I thought it was very easy to understand. When I got back home, I literally read 13 of 15 chapters in 4 days and accomplished all of the exercises. The following day I began programming a professional database for one of my clients. I am confident and attribute my success to this book.

I also agree with the review that states if you are a total beginner with no experience at all, it probably isn't the book for you. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to understand the world of VB.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the raw beginner- updated.......2001-12-19

In 1983 I learned BASIC programming for the VAX. It was my best subject in college. I figured it would be easy to learn Visual Basic 6. It probably is but this book teaches more about the Microsoft Programming Environment than it does about writing computer programs.
The easiest way for me to learn is by studying examples. It uses the same example through several chapters.
Information in this book is often presented in non-linear form. Step F is sometimes presented between Steps A and C. I find this annoying.
I "ground" through this book page by page for Six chapters. I feel I learned the material but it wasn't easy. When it got to database programming I lost interest although I would like to learn it.
In all fairness to Murach I should metion I haven't used a computer in almost twenty years. I was learing Windows 98 in conjunction with VB6.
I plan to try another beginner book and return to Murach's to finish it.
UPDATE: After taking a few VB6 and SQL classes, I have a new appreciation for this book. I frequently return to Murach's VB6 to quickly see how something is done. It's a great reference. I still don't think it's for someone with no programming experience but I'm upping my rating from two to four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners & Intermediate Level VB programmer.......2001-10-22

This is the only VB book I found that provided a "complete" database solution for ADO. I bought several in my search. It steps you through both a bound and unbound solution (program). Each chapter of this book challenges you with a practical program to develop that reinforces the topics discussed. I did have to change the name of a file to match the actual database that I downloaded. Not a big deal! The 1st four chapters present the basics for a new VB programmer, including an excellent tour through MS Visual Studio for VB. Beginning in chapter 5, you work with databases, ActiveX, SQL, Classes, DHTML, and IIS. You get 15 chapters that pretty much cover the gammit, bringing you up to a VB intermediate level. It gives you a good flavor of what VB can do. There is a lot more to VB, though. You just have to continue to read more about VB or seak out more coding examples. I had a question about one of the programming examples, and received an answer right away. Murach is committed to providing solid computer books and welcomes your suggestions towards improving their products. You won't be disappointed with this book. It will encourage you to learn more about VB. This would be an excellent text for a VB course.
