For the untrained observer, it can be quite a challenge to sort out the many trees that make up a stand of older forest in, say, New England or the Ozarks. This well-illustrated guidebook, covering 364 species, comes to the rescue with photographs organized in several ways: by, for example, the shape of the leaf or needle, by the fruit, by the flower or cone, and by autumn coloration. Following one visible characteristic or another, the reader can narrow the range of possibilities, then turn to an informative text that describes a tree's physical characteristics, habitat, and range. Many of the species covered are relatively rare, such as the "stinking cedar" of the Georgia-Florida border; others are locally abundant, such as the paper birch of the boreal forest, used to make ice-cream sticks; still others, such as the smooth sumac, are widespread. The guidebook also covers ornamentals introduced from other continents, such as the Chinese privet and Mahaleb cherry. --Gregory McNamee

Note: the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains, while the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it.

5 out of 5 stars Great homeschool material.......2007-10-17

My age 14 grandson's biology text book had a few pages of information about trees, which were enough to whet his appetite to know more. We gave him the Audubon Field Guide to North American Trees - Eastern - which was perfect for the NE Tennessee - North Carolina area where he lives. This book greatly increased his knowledge of trees and his environment.

4 out of 5 stars Great Guide that is ALMOST Perfect.......2007-08-18

I have always liked the Audubon Society Field Guides. This particular guide is great in the amount of color photos for sometimes easily identifying species in all seasons, whether from the fall leaves, bark, summer leaves, and the fruit it produces. Also the organization of the guide is very good. My cons below are NOT enough to prevent me from recommending this guide. Compared to other guides it's still the best.

CONS: The amount of information in the back is not always consistent. Also there still isn't always an easy way to differentiate some of the similar species (e.g. Oaks). In other words the pictures and/or the descriptions are not enough to distinguish like species.

Very much help for figuring out what trees we have and we have a lot. Pictures are very nice and cross reference if you aren't totally sure of what you are looking at. Very handy size too

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-06-27

Every tree and every leaf that you can think of is in this book. Great clear pictures and the information is great. So glad I purchased this book for my husband. The equivalant to bird watching. Tree watching.

4 out of 5 stars Information Packed.......2007-05-17

My new hobby is woodturning bowls so I bought this book to help me identify trees that supply my wood. Once I learned how to search the material, this book has been great fun and very useful. I take it with me when I walk my dog around the neighborhood to identify trees.

This compact guidebook, produced to the National Audubon Society's high standards of quality, gives full descriptions of more than 650 species found east of the Rocky Mountains, along with notes on several hundred more. The eminently sensible organization relies on first-impression visible characteristics rather than the elaborate keys of some older texts--a format well suited to beginning wildflower enthusiasts. If, for instance, you wanted to identify a long-stemmed, tubular red flower that you found in a grove of loblolly pines, you would first turn to the color plates, find the section devoted to red flowers, find a likely match from the 30-odd choices, and then turn to the text to see that the flower's habitat and range made a good fit, ruling out those species that do not. After a few minutes' looking, you'll have identified a trumpet honeysuckle. Well written and richly illustrated, this peerless guide makes the ideal companion for an expedition to eastern wood or prairie. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

Nothing is as colorful as a field of wildflowers in full-bloom so what could be more appropriate than a magnificent field guide with beautiful full-color photographs? More than 1,000 species are covered in full detail, with notes on more than 400 others. The 700 identification photographs show wildflowers-including grasses and sedges, and many flowering vines and shrubs-in their natural habitats.

Note: the Eastern Edition generally covers states east of the Rocky Mountains, while the Western Edition covers the Rocky Mountain range and all the states to the west of it.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Test.......2007-07-07

Each of our five kids had to collect wildflower specimens and identify them with some general information for their eighth grade project. We used these books with each one and they are still in great shape after more than 10 years usage. I recently purchased the updated versions and was very pleased with the photos. I didn't really think they could get better but they did!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Wildflowers.......2007-04-20

I bought this book to help me identify the flowers I encountered both in my backyard and in a local state park. Happily, I can report that I was able to identify almost all of them that I came across (one Violet variant, the Confederate Violet, was not mentioned anywhere I could see in the book, but a North Carolina State wildflower website helped me identify it). The color photographs are top notch, many showing both a closeup of the flower, and the plant as a whole. Detailed information on each plant is also available, including the common flowering periods, a location range, dimensions of the flower as well as the entire plant, and much more. If you purchase this book, be sure to read this detailed information when identifying a flower; a number of variants are mentioned in the text that are not shown in the photographs. Overall, I am greatly pleased with this book (though it was the only one I could find that covered plants in the south-eastern part of the United States). Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Rugged Field Guide.......2006-08-27

Something should be said about the ruggedness and durability of this excellent field guide. Mine was purchased about 10 years ago and it has not been lightly used. I dropped it in a creek once and it became as saturated as a sponge, yet after drying out it has never had print or page damage or loose binding. My little boy is always paging through its nearly 900 pages and kids can be very tough on books but this one has held up. Read the other positive reviews of the books content, I can not add much to them. This is the best field guide I have ever had.

              Book Description

Who Killed Diana? poses tough questions about suspicious behavior and activities and conflicting testimonies. It challenges the widely held assumption that the blood of Mercedes driver Henri Paul contained alcohol at over three times the legal limit–and even the presumption that Paul was merely a Ritz security employee. It names and probes diverse and shadowy parties—both British and foreign—who had motives for wanting the famous couple eliminated as well as the means for achieving this goal and disguising it as an accident.

Renowned investigative journalists Peter Hounam and Derek McAdam take the reader on a breathtaking, page-turning journey through a land of unofficial branches of secret services, professional assassins, international hitmen, “wet affairs,” Psy-Ops, the Clinic, “Feather Men,” remote-controlled cars, and ancient clandestine societies protecting the British establishment.

                  5 out of 5 stars Hey ho, let's go..........2004-03-20

As an American, it hurts to admit that Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the quintessential expression of American cheekiness and derring-do, has been best chronicled by a Britisher. Of course, I'm teasing a bit. But there is no question that Keith Topping seems to have a better grasp of what is important in the Buffyverse than many of his contemporaries on this side of the ocean.

What Topping does not do is write one agonizing reprise after another of all the episodes of Season Six of the show. As viewers will no doubt remember, Season Six was quite agonizing itself without that point being hammered home all over again. Instead, Topping provides very short synopses, followed by myriad details of things that are unique, funny, or perplexing about each episode.

You will be treated to paragraphs on 'A little learning is a dangerous thing' (the power of misinformation), 'Denial they name is...' (Self-delusion in Sunnydale), 'It's a designer label..' (clothes, of course), valley-speak, geek-speak, logic errors, and ever more items that bring to light the aspects of the production which the viewer, caught up in the story, is likely to miss. All of this is done in a style that is an enjoyable mix of tongue-in-cheek and respectfully serious.

Topping is an excellent researcher. His ability to find countless relationships, both intentional and accidental, to other atavars of popular culture is uncanny. Nor does he hesitate to introduce the reader to the more analytic writings on Buffy and the Scooby gang. Despite the spottiness of Season Six, Topping manages to ferret out all the good parts - to the point where I have to admit that the book is better than the season.

If you are a fan then you will want this book. And you will want to track down Topping's other efforts on the show that nearly ate South California.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent Slayer volume.......2003-07-16

This book covers the sixth season of Buffy and is the next volume in Keith Topping's 'Slayer' episode guides (the previous 5 seasons are covered in a single volume, also available from Amazon). Keith does his usual thorough job covering each episode in detail. Even if you disagree with his views, you can't dispute that he has a deep love for the show and a healthy respect for all those involved in its production.

As I have stated in other reviews, Keith Topping's Buffy and Angel books are the best unauthorised episode guides on the market. If you are a serious fan of Buffy and Angel, you only need the official guides and these books.

5 out of 5 stars The author of 'Slayer' provides a 6th season update.......2003-07-06

For those who liked Keith Topping's British perspective in his earlier 'Slayer' volume, here is an update. This book covers only the 6th season - Buffy's resurrection, the Trioka, the musical, Willow-as-evil, etc. Each episode receives 5-to-8 pages of coverage, organized under various thematic headings: Plot summary, music, memorable quotes, comments on the women's clothing, continuity errors, logic flaws, pop culture references, etc. Topping seems to have caught everything, down to the tiniest continuity error.

There are also separate essays on (1) series creator Joss Whedon, (2) the network switch to UPN, (3) an update on BtVS novels (about a paragraph on each), (4) an update on BtVS and the internet, and (5) predictions for the 7th season, which was the last season of this underappreciated series that never gained the viewership it deserved.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the best Buffy season.......2003-04-30

Season six is in my opinon the best Buffy season ever.
If you don't like it read this book. It will change your mind.
If it doesn't, then go back to watching Bewitched or Buffy season one. I guess the true spirit of the Slayer is lost on you.

5 out of 5 stars This is good--for fans of season 6.......2003-03-24

I have the edition of Slayer for seasons 1 through 5, and it is really a good guide of the series. This book continues with the same fun observations, facts, and quotes. I know some people hate season 6, but for those of us that love it--this book is worth it. If you don't like season 6, maybe this book can help you see the good things about the season.

                  4 out of 5 stars Good IDS|Snort book.......2003-08-14

This book is an effective introduction to Intruder Detection, demonstrating how popular open-source tools can be used. I found the code samples, table, diagrams and screenshots to be clear and useful. I learned what I'd hoped to learn and feel empowered to set up an IDS myself. Plenty of links and resources when I want to learn more.

I read a few of the other reviews here after I read the book... especially Richard B's. I noticed some of the same techinical mistakes, but don't feel that they are a big deal. As a sr. software engineer and techinical editor, I always read critically, just mentally note them and continue. They aren't the kind of mistakes that make the code useless, or would confuse/mislead any level of reader. Another editing pass would help most books, and I none of the grammar mistakes annoy me - I read to learn what I can and move on, not to nitpick or get annoyed.

As far as 1.9 vs. 2.0, I've looked at the snort site and agree that the release is signficant, but it doesn't break backwards compatibility, so it doesn't make this book any less revelant. 2.0 seems to mostly change the backend implementation - *the application is used identically* so I suspect the vast majority of this book is unaffected. The Syngress book covers 2.0, yet so does the website, which hypes this two-times-more-expensive book. That book too will no doubt soon be superceded, so read whatever you buy immediately ;-)

5 out of 5 stars Great hands-on coverage of snort.......2003-08-02

I really like books that are to the point and filled with examples. This is such a book. It enables the reader to get up and going quickly. The reader is guided through installation and each component of SNORT. Once the basics are covered, the author moves to more advanced topics and integrating other tools like Apache, MySQL, and ACID. All told, it presents an excellent approach to building an IDS.

3 out of 5 stars Weakest of the Snort books published thus far.......2003-07-16

"Intrusion Detection with Snort: Advanced IDS, etc." (IDWS) was the second of this year's intrusion detection books I've reviewed. The first was Tim Crothers' "Implementing Intrusion Detection Systems" (4 stars). I was disappointed by IDWS, since I have a high opinion of Prentice Hall and the new "Bruce Perens' Open Source Series." (I'm looking forward to the book on CIFS, for example.) IDWS read poorly and doesn't deliver as much useful content as the competing Syngress book "Snort 2.0."

The most difficult aspect of reading IDWS is the author's grammar, particularly his avoidance of using definitive articles like "the", and other important words. For instance, p. 3 says "Apache web server takes help from ACID, etc." p. 133 claims "However, if you are using HTTP decode preprocessor, this attempt can detected." Beyond grammar, the author demonstrates weak knowledge of the IDS field, stating on p. 1 "Intrusion detection methods starting appearing in the last few years." James Anderson led the way in 1980, followed by Denning and Neumann in 1983 and Todd Heberlein in 1990! The author also repeatedly compares IDS to anti-virus signatures, which is simplistic and incorrect.

Technical errors further hamper IDWS. p. 89 makes the mistake of saying TCP sequence numbers count packets; they really count bytes of application data. p. 96-97 confuses the use of standard Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) with their use in Snort, which is different. (SF+ means SYN and FIN and zero or more other flags, not SYN AND FIN alone.) The fuzzy diagrams don't appear professional, and acronyms like "PHP" are defined incorrectly as "Pretty Home Page" (rather than the self-referencing "PHP Hypertext Processor.")

Coverage of important topics is lacking or outdated. First, Snort 1.9 is the basis for the text. However, 2.0 is available and covered by the Syngress book. The output system Barnyard and unified logging receive a total of one page. No meaningful mention is made of the effects of collecting traffic via hub, SPAN port, or tap. The port list on pp. 87-88 shows "well known ports," but doesn't say if they are TCP or UDP. The author makes odd claims about Snort "not [being] able to analyze application layer protocols," which is misleading. Snort rules aren't designed specifically for HTTP, for example, but they can be used to inspect HTTP requests and responses.

My favorite part of IDWS was the coverage of using the MySQL database. Appendix B provides helpful supplemental material on this subject also. Bottom line: I would pass on IDWS but keep an eye on the other titles in the PHPTR "Open Source Series."

2 out of 5 stars Not enough detail, and not up to date.......2003-05-28

This is the first book that I read on Snort, and I wish I had gone with something else. This book really reads like more of an overview of intrusion detection and Snort, rather than a useful reference for actually using Snort. This would be fine if the title did NOT include the words "Advanced" or "Techniques," because there is not a lot of either in this book. It also doesn't help that it's not written to the latest release. If you want to understand intrusion detection a little better and you are considering to try Snort, then this books is fine. If you want or need more, this just isn't the book.

                  2 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2003-05-23

I got this book and read through it (didn't take me long. It's pretty short and actually has less than 200 pages really covering Snort). I was disappointed that it did not come with a CD with all the software. Also, this book covers Snort 1.9.0, but 2.0 just came out. I'm not sure why they didn't update everything to the latest version, which would have made it much more usefel. I guess it's not bad if you really just want a quick introduction to IDSs and Snort, but look elsewhere if you really want an in depth book on Snort.
