Book Description

The horse- and rider-training handbook of an internationally renowned master horseman.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Effective Horse Communication.......2007-08-21

Author writes in an easy to read conversational format. He emphasises the importance of horse and rider spending time together to get to know each other. Building of trust on both the horse and rider. I recommend this book. Also watch RFD TV on satelitte.

5 out of 5 stars This is the only natural horsemanship book you'll ever need.......2007-07-31

This is it. Everything is in this book. One can study this book for years and find something new in it each time. Natural horsemanship is so old, it's new again. Pat Parelli is the only one who has managed to put it all together in one place with one title. Since the Dorrance brothers and Ronnie Willis have graduated to Horseman's Heaven, the next best thing is learning from one of their star pupils. Pat is entertaining and almost always profound. The only question is do you savvy savvy?

2 out of 5 stars Clinton Anderson's Down Under Horsemanship book is better.......2007-06-23

While I liked some aspects of Pat's book I found it confusing, unclear, in some instances, repetitive and in some cases, not useful for me at all. He mentions that horses that bite (my horse) bite because you let them get too close (duh!) yet the 1st lesson to gain respect has you touching the horses muzzle to get him to back up (my horse tried to bite me- so, now what?). One of the next exercises has you touching his chest, you know the part of the body directly under the horses' head.... the head that has the biting teeth in it... my horse tried to bite me again! I am giving up on Pat's book for now. Clinton Anderson's book "Down Under Horsemanship" teaches how to use a stick to keep the horse away (not using it to threaten but as an extension of your arm). Clinton's book has step by step pictures and explanations of what can go wrong (both with the horse and human) and how to fix what went wrong. Both he and Pat have similar philosophies but Clinton's book flows much better, gives better examples, describes problems and solutions and stresses how to progress. I would stick with Clinton's book.

4 out of 5 stars Natural Horse-Man-Ship: Six Keys to a Natural Horse-Human Relationship.......2007-05-12

I bought this book for my daughter she thought it was good but did prefer John Lyons and Pat Parelli's DVD better as it was visual and this book was against some of her own ideas but a great book if you like the techniques that Pat Parelli uses.
He uses phrases a little old fashion for the younger generation and therefore my daughter found his relationship to the horses a little hard to understand as she did not know the people he refered to.
It does teach all about respect for the horse and from the horse and is well described none the less. A lot of important facts about how to teach a horse, use of spurs, trailer loading, tools, yeilding and many basic detailed descriptions of cantering, techniques of he rein, timing, Desensitizing, voice cues and much more. A great all in one book with black and white photos.
Has a different technique to John Lyons which she decided she liked best after reading this book

5 out of 5 stars The hook.......2007-05-12

There are a lot of so called "natural horsemaship" books, dvds etc out there. I was already steered in this direction because my horse is a parelli student, but I usually tend to do my own thing and so, I checked out a few of the other programs out there, and bought this book despite some reviewers opinions about Pat being a great salesman, using terms that didn't need to be used, creating his own language etc. Let me say this.. yes, this book which is relatively inexpensive in the big scheme of how much horse training costs. It is also Pats "hook", or method he uses to spark interest in his program. It works. It is a great overview of the parelli program, but if you are looking for one little book to teach you how to do it, don't waste your money. The books alone, even if you are an experienced horseperson, are not going to give you enough information. If you want to get a feeling for what natural horsemanship is all about, the book will answer the questions you have, and spark some new ones! I have the entire parelli program now, and am going to one of the conferences this year, to see the Pat and his wife Linda in action. The book hooked me! I'm a praelli devotee now, and urge all horse people to give it a try. Its a new way of interacting with horses, that makes it more fun than you can imagine, while stressing safety and savvy around these large, potentially dangerous, but wonderful and beautiful animals. I know.. just drink the cool aid!

    Book Description

Wages for Caring examines policies and programs of compensation for family caregivers of the disabled elderly from a broad analytical perspective, weighing current policies of home care services against principles of access, equity, quality, and funding of long-term care. Linsk, Keigher, Simon-Rusinowitz, and England challenge widely held assumptions that currently hold the family responsible for care, and accept the government's role in deterring or delaying institutionalization. The authors focus on programs and policies that already exist which could be adjusted to include families and to promote support of family caregiving. In assessing the potential of broad implementation of wages for caring, they contend that if implemented appropriately, family compensation may offer benefits not available through any other kind of service system. First, the authors review incentives to family care and services to families providing home care, and include an overview of attendance allowance and caregiver compensation programs in other developed countries. Next, they present several original studies in an integrated format to allow for the analysis of pros and cons of several compensated family care programs. Third, they examine provisions of Medicaid programs at the state level, as well as provisions of the aging network and their potential to complement family care. The focus is largely on poor clients and families, for whom the burden of care has the most relevant costs in terms of potential government liability. Finally, the authors develop consumer centered criteria to evaluate policy and program provisions, with special attention to the special needs of low-income elderly and their families. Wages for Caring will prove particularly useful to public policymakers, social workers, gerontologists, and researchers.

The worldwide expansion of the tourism industry creates many encounters between global agents and local forces, yet the host-guest interaction is rarely considered from the point of view of the experience of work. This study documents and discusses such a global-local encounter, based on fieldwork carried out in hotels in Barbados and Malta. Insight is drawn from a review of such issues as recruitment, promotion, redundancy, discipline, security, communication, expertise, total quality management initiatives, trade unionism and industrial action.

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Isn't this what the internet's for?.......2006-02-03

Completely stupid and worthless book. Basically, it fills up 200 or so pages of actual names of pornstars in bold, big font. I'm sorry but I don't need to buy a pocket manual on pornstar names. The web has plenty of sites (such as the Adult Movie Database) that list every skin flick star that you can dream of - for free. The trivia is crap, and the facts are even worse. Example: The male dragonfly's penis has a scoop to dig out other males' semen. Please, don't even CONSIDER purchasing this book. The CD isn't even a saving grace. You could make a better Mix CD yourself, minus the undesirable tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for adult beginners.......2000-02-12

As an adult beginner, this excellent book provides one with the highlights to the violin's history, construction, repertoire, and pedagogy, among other subjects. This book is also an excellent choice for anyone who enjoys listening to the violin. Being a teacher at a fine arts high school, I have recommended this book to my students who are studying violin.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book; Very informative........1999-05-17

This book is an excellent choice for the serious violinist, or any music lover. It tells the entire history of the violin, and also biographies of composers and violinists. It is a valuable piece of text that I will use constantly.

4 out of 5 stars A little bit of everything about the violin.......1999-01-06

Good book for the price. This book has chapters on making, history, acoustical principles, teaching schools, music types, and famous players. Great for someone interested in the world of violins who doesn't want to spend a lot of money.

            Book Description

Russian youth culture has been a subject of great interest to researchers since 1991, but most studies to date have failed to consider the global context. Looking West? engages theories of cultural globalization to chart how post-Soviet Russia's opening up to the West has been reflected in the cultural practices of its young people.

Visitors to Russia's cities often interpret the presence of designer clothes shops, Internet cafés, and a vibrant club scene as evidence of the "Westernization" of Russian youth. As Looking West? shows, however, the younger generation has adopted a "pick and mix" strategy with regard to Western cultural commodities that reflects a receptiveness to the global alongside a precious guarding of the local. The authors show us how young people perceive Russia to be positioned in current global flows of cultural exchange, what their sense of Russia's place in the new global order is, and how they manage to "live with the West" on a daily basis.

Looking West? represents an important landmark in Russian-Western collaborative research. Hilary Pilkington and Elena Omel'chenko have been at the heart of an eight-year collaboration between the University of Birmingham (U.K.) and Ul'ianovsk State University (Russia). This book was written by Pilkington and Omel'chenko with the team of researchers on the project--Moya Flynn, Ul'iana Bliudina, and Elena Starkova.

            5 out of 5 stars Slay...This!.......2004-04-30

This is a wonderful Buffy the Vampire Slayer resource guide. It really is a shame that it is so hard to find now, because it really does answer a lot of questions.
Unlike the Watcher Guide books it gives great detail about episodes and characters There are also interesting side notes about meanings for some episodes and what the entitle idea for them were.
Characters like Xander, Willow, Giles , and etc... Are also mentioned a lot, and there is no doubt that you will learn something new about the series in this.
Even though this is a very heavy novel I totally recommend it. As a Buffy fan and reader I really think it is worth hunting for.
If you want some other good Buffy references. Then check out the Monster Book by Christopher Golden. This is another really good book about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
However, if you can handle all of the reading in this book. Then you will defiantly enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars The Slayer and Her Scoobies.......2004-04-27

This really is a very good book and it's a shame that it's so hard to find. There is so much covered in this book about Buffy. Ever since Buffy has ended a few years ago. It seems like more people are interested in it then ever.
There are a few resources books out there that really can explain the series well.
            This is one of them.
One of the things I found hard about this one though was that it was rather long and ongoing.
However, if you can get past that I think you'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars For my money, the best Buffy episode guide there is.......2003-10-16

There are a number of Buffy episode guides on the market, but Keith Topping's are my favorite by a considerable margin. Both volumes of THE WATCHER'S GUIDE are very fine, but I find they are more useful for the large number of interviews with cast and crewmembers. Although Topping ends his volume with some interesting essays and reviews of various Buffy-related publications and websites, the vast bulk of his guides are devoted to the episodes themselves. Currently this guide to episodes 1-5 is out of print in the United States (though available from Britain, I believe), and only the guide to Episode 6 in print here. Hopefully, they will bring out a new one-volume edition of seasons 1-7.

Each episode is covered in around 4-6 pages, offering a very brief synopsis of the plot, some of the better quotes, some ravings about the highpoints, a fun section about illogical elements, a general comment section at the end, and a host of other fun things. Oh yeah, those wanting to know about the music in each show can find a list here. I don't agree with his evaluation of each episode (e.g., he hates "Anne," which starts off Season 3, along with many others, but I think it is one of the best episodes ever, with a great deal of super clever writing that many people seem to miss), but he is always fun to argue with, and he is never merely sloppy. Most of all, Topping is clearly a fan of great TV, and there is the spirit of a fellow-fan informing the book as a whole. I also like the fact that each episode is introduced with the publication of the original date in the U.S. and in Great Britain, and also gives the titles in their French and German releases.

Now, I don't want to be misunderstood here, but this is also one of the great bathroom books of all time. It rates right up there with Dave Marsh's THE BOOK OF ROCK LISTS,THE NORTON ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY, and THE ESSENTIAL BIFF. Never underestimate the value of a good bathroom book.

5 out of 5 stars A British perspective on the Buffyverse.......2003-07-21

Each episode, up to and including season 5, gets 3-to-6 pages of coverage, organized under various thematic headings: Plot summary, music, memorable quotes, comments on the women's clothing, continuity errors, logic flaws, pop culture references, etc. Books of this nature are enjoyable because it's fun to compare one's reaction with the author's reaction, and Topping notices every tiny detail.

There are also separate essays: (1) History of the vampire myth, (2) 'The Outsiders' as a series theme, (3) BtVS and real-life school violence, (4) BtVS and the internet, and (5) disputes with the TV networks. As well, each BtVS novel gets about a page of coverage.

This differs from other BtVS books because of Topping's perspective as a Brit. He's a bit thin-skinned about the anti-British jibes, especially Principal Flutie's snide remark about the royal family in the second episode (Flutie was right!). On the other hand, Topping sees connections between BtVS and US culture with an objectivity that US viewers lack. Apart from the vampires, Sunnydale is a bit too perfect to be realistic, and it's certainly bizarre that a southern California town would be so lily-white. It is only in the 7th season (beyond the scope of this book) that we see a recurring black character (Principal Wood) and a recurring hispanic character (Iyari Limon as 'Kennedy'). Topping notes that (white) Americans often see themselves as decent people, perhaps overly trusting, fighting off non-white underclass intruders who seek to ruin their caucasian paradise. See the connection? Does the shoe fit?

5 out of 5 stars Best Buffy reference book.......2003-07-16

Don't bother with any other unauthorised Buffy reference guides as Keith Topping's 'Slayer' books are the only ones you'll ever need. This guide is packed with all sorts of information and Keith doesn't shy away from giving his informed and personal opinions about the series. He also briefly covers the spin-off comics, books and websites.

Keith Topping is a talented writer (check out his Doctor Who novels from BBC Books and Telos) and his episode guides are the best ones on the market. He has also written a companion book that covers Angel called 'Hollywood Vampire' which is well worth purchasing.

This book helps you exploit Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6, a powerful end-user tool that allows you to build small-scale but effective database programs quickly and that ships with Visual Studio 6. The guide assumes little programming or database experience and provides a basic tour of programming and objects, plus database objects like tables and views. (Visual FoxPro 6 is arguably a good place to try out basic object-oriented programming techniques for the very first time.)

Later sections examine how to build user interfaces with forms and controls. The samples aren't fancy, but this capable book gets you up and running with actual database applications. Important topics such as reports, distributing applications (using the Visual FoxPro run-time environment), and the FoxPro API are introduced. Other chapters explore ways to scale up FoxPro applications to SQL Server and Oracle and ways to access external DLLs. --Richard Dragan

5 out of 5 stars Great book Lots of concepts still applies to Visual FoxPro 8.......2003-05-28

I have this book. It's on my desktop on the time. Lots of concepts still applies to Visual FoxPro 8. Every VFP programmer should have it. I doubt Microsoft Press will release a Programmer's Guide for Visual FoxPro 8. Use this book to look up techniques, etc. Not to read cover to cover. You use it once, it pays off.

2 out of 5 stars Not so hot.......2000-06-17

I am currently using this book at my new job. I was previously exposed to FoxPro 2.6 and then Visual FoxPro, but I never learned to program in it. It is very confusing to the average person who may little to no knowledge of basic programming principles. I see why the "Dummies" series is so popular.....definitely not for beginners!

3 out of 5 stars NOT FOR BEGINNERS.......1999-09-19

As we all know, Microsoft does not write books for beginners; therefore, if you were looking to learn a computer language or how to create databases using tools like Visual FoxPro, a Microsoft 'manual' would not be the book for you. The title should be "Microsoft Visual FoxPro 6.0 Intermediate to Advanced Programmer's Guide"

4 out of 5 stars An important Foxpro Manual.......1999-08-13

This is not a book for beginners. It is intermediate to advance level detailing how to perform specific programming tasks, often with examples. In this regard, it is indespensible. I frequently use it to solve specific programming problems, such as "How do I use ActiveX with Foxpro?" It will give you the specific technique to use.

However, if you are new to Foxpro, start with something else.
