Book Description
Perhaps there should be a warning label: "Caution: The more than 3 million registered nurses and the more than 100,000 people entering nursing school each year may experience acute tickling of the funny bone with this calendar." With each page featuring a funny joke, hilarious true story, witty quote, or medical chart blooper, this calendar's humor is aimed at nurses with more accuracy than a hypodermic needle. This is the fourth edition of the Nurses: Jokes, Quotes, and Anecdotes Calendar, and each year the number of Emails and letters from nurses thanking us for making them laugh and providing their own hysterical adventures in nursing increases substantially. The Nurses: Jokes, Quotes, and Anecdotes 2005 Calendar is sure to keep the letters and Emails coming by giving nurses not only a healthy dose of humor each day but also a sense of appreciation for their integral role in keeping us well.

Customer Reviews:
funny and sad.......2002-10-06
The characters in Loving Edith are quirky, funny and sad, but never pitiful or unsympathetic. This is quite an accomplishment considering the snooty world of literary magazines that Tannen is writing about. Has the author ever worked at a literary magazine? I wonder if this novel really IS based on some of the figures from the New Yorker. At any rate, a charming read, one that will stay with you, cliche and all.
a good story.......2000-08-25
_Loving Edith_ has a lot going for it: it's well written, the characters are fully developed, the plot interesting. Interesting enough, in fact, that some of it was copied by the TV show "Felicity" (adopted girl interns in her birth mom's firm, pre-med student not sure she wants to go on studying medicine saves someone's life in an emergency and decides medicine is indeed for her). I recommend the book to anyone with an interest in New York and its culture, especially the Upper East Side and Downtown gallery crowds.
a hilarious page turner.......1999-12-21
I highly recommend this book especially to anyone who enjoys satire about the literary world. The girl works at a New Yorker-ish place that is sent up exquisitely. Her adventures are funny and poignant. And the book makes you laugh and keep turning those pages...

Customer Reviews:
incredibly comprehensive, a Good Read.......2006-01-26
For some time now there's been little published in English on Stockhausen, Maconie's work here makes up for lost time, You can however study with Stockhausen himself if you rather not simply read a book, that real-life, real-time reality fixes seems to be the "buzz" now. You can be a "Survivor" yourself after spending time with Stockhausen and his incredible approach to making music/art/time/space/timbre/mists/clouds/lines/texts; he offers courses each August in Kurten a suburb of Cologne.
Maconie studied with everyone in the European avant-garde,and has been there for premiere performances and knows both sides of the fence, the theoretical/conceptual and performative, and has wonderful insights into not only where certain works are situated within Stockhausen's creative evolution, but the performance problems, and responses to current or latter day reality.
The work here is organized situated around concepts,"polarities","revolution", "aleatory", "Contacts" "Uncertainty" or more functional items as "rhythmic cells",(dealing with early Boulez and Messiaen's concepts) of organizing musical moments(Stockhausen came to abandon this way of thinking in the early Fifties with the first four :klavierstuck: wirtten in Paris),or "Temperaments", as the use in electronic music as "Studie" :Gesange der Juenglinge:.
Chapters come to be like galaxies,"mists" where Stockhausen's music circles revolves around, like layers/swirls of functions, working premises. Maconie traces the breaking off points as well as realms of innovation, which can take odd turns as his ongoing disinterest in strings for example,(violins, cellos)culminated as the subverted "Helikopter Quartet".Strings, here the Arditti Quartet in motion flying away from each other.I wonder if $100,000 instruments were used for this journey?
Also surveyed herein was Stockhausen's early interest in Meyer-Eppler,"how time passes" and communication theory, his concepts of Zeit, densities of Time, and Cycles in music of "particles" of tones, points,"Punkt" "groups", "clusters",each work is given explanation,as for example the coordinated utilization of timbre in the early works, how instrumental color became associated with electronic tones as the sine wave(flute), sawtooth(brass), as in the early "Kontra-Punkte", and later "Kontakte", there was a set of problematics in the interface of electronic sounds with instrumental timbre which was not really resolved interestingly, each realm became unto itself, influence by the other but seldom inhabiting the same conceptual space, "Gruppen for three orchestras" for example was largely influenced by thinking of tones electronically, the complexity of timbral/textural modulations, but the work functions with pure instrumental timbre.
Not until the introduction of LIVE electronics as in the process pieces, as "Plus-Minus", or "Telemusik", "Kurzwellen", the use of short-wave radios", did this get resolved. Improvisation was also the "buzz"in the late Sixties, Seventies that Stockhausen adopted as in these works and "Aus dem Sieben tagen", a set of word pieces as a stimulant for improvisation."Take another's sound and follow it"
Stockhausen was always unrelenting in his search for the next thread of innovation be it any realm even transformations of timbre itself as in his various "klavierstuck", the overwhelming complexity of timbre in the :Tenth klavierstuck: for example, situates a subterranean realm in the extended uses of silences, as like a subverted mirror where the music can only be remembered, the discourse is transgressed; but the piano timbre then is like independent to itself not responsive to anything outside the moment when it occurs and then it is fairly continuous as an organ with the forcefulness, and the directedness of the acoustic piano capabilities,as large size cluster chords, brutal forearm and the cluster glissandi.
Maconie goes straight through the lifeworlds here with talks on the the various pieces from LICHT, all of it, and we get to know the various forms this opera has takened, with "franchises" of works from each of the operas that can be performed as an independently as an excerpt. Maconie writes well with metaphors created from popular culture, Buster Keaton, films to situate Stockhausen's rather austere, cold work at times within a larger context of the here and now. We learn however that deep down Karlheinz is a bit of a conservative, having his own fixed points of "comfort zones" throughout his massive oeuvre yet harboring an aesthetic still for innovation, for the unknown not ever succombing(arguably) to the vagaries of the marketplace with repeatable works and gestures, or throw-away art. He has takened issue for example with American Pop Art as a means of escaping the issues of contemporary expression, and Stockhausen always replaces escape into entertainment(popular forms, tunes, nefarious corrupted minimalism, improvisation copy-cats) with hard-work, the Protestant ethic as Weber has said.
But the operas under LICHT are in fact reponses to the current scene, of feminism, myth and cosmology of the moment "Montag",then childhood somewhat autobiographical in "Donnerstag", or war and violence in "Dienstag",Tuesday, the god of Mars, and the first opera on evil and corruption-darknesses, Lucifer's Dreams as in "Samstag". Each opera is given wonderful discussion, with verbal descriptions of what occurs on stage. Still this is an incredible book. . .

Book Description
This second collection of defective detective stories features some of the best of the period, including Russell Gray’s gimpy hero Ben Bryn, Edith and Ejler Jacobson’s hemophiliac gum-shoe Nat Perry, John Kobler’s glaucomatous troubleshooter Peter Quest, and Leon Byrne’s deaf detective Dan Holden.
Customer Reviews:
I'd Kiss You Sweetheart, But My Lips Are Missing!.......2000-06-23
This is a sequel to "The Defective Detective in the Pulps", published in 1983 and featuring the first outrageous (?) selection of detective stories drawn from weird menace pulp magazines of the '30s and '40s. As in the previous volume, which I'd also recommend, the focus is on handicapped detectives, people who can miss bits of their bodies, but certainly none of their wits! You will meet, among other things, a dead hand, a detective who's so strong that he can tear human beings apart (and is now regretfully accused of homicide), another who's called "The Bleeder" because of his rare affliction, and Peter Quest, whose unfulfilled quest is one for death. Authors include Russell Gray, John Kobler, and Edith & Ejler Jacobson, while the book itself is a facsimile reproduction of the old magazines -not crumbling under your fingers this time! Illustrations and ads are kept in the book, while the thoroughly satisfying Editors' preface provides you with all the facts you want to know. Not certainly for all tastes, but a must for pulp fiction collectors, crime enthusiasts and readers of Americana.

Book Description
British Youth Television examines the phenomenon of 'yoof' television - programmes such as Network 7, The Word, The Big Breakfast, Snub TV and Gamesmaster. Between 1987 and 1995 these and other related programmes formed part of a high profile genre that in terms of both the personnel involved and in terms of their visual style continue to be influential in British television today. Examining these programmes the author reflects on the way in which the contemporary youth audience - Generation X - were being addressed. Karen Lury identifies an ambivalent viewing sensibility - 'cynicism and enchantment' - which encapsulates the attitude expressed by both the programmes and the audience. The distinctive aspect of the book is the way in which Lury is concerned to concentrate on the spatial and visual aspects of television. In particular her concern is to re-evaluate television as a specific experience, and one which has a central importance in young people's formation of identity and their sense of being in the world. Her central thesis also suggests that while television must necessarily be related to other visual media, it should be understood as having distinct aesthetic and phenomenological qualities of its own.

Book Description
As a Java developer, you're always looking for tools to help in your web and application development. Maybe you've heard of the Jakarta Commons open source Java tools. The Jakarta Commons is an open source Jakarta subproject where developers create and maintain a collection of twenty-plus independent Java components and utilities that serve useful purposes. Jakarta Commons packages include utilities for web, XML, networking, building and testing applications, and some that help other packages work better together. Jakarta Commons packages are designed to be reusable. Each one is a time saver by itself, and when used in combination the results can be very powerful. But in searching for information on the Jakarta Commons tools, you find it hard to locate documentation relevant to your needs. You don't have lots of time to spend searching for information on a specific Jakarta Commons tool to determine what it does and how to incorporate it in your code. If you are looking for a single source for clear information and samples on how to use the Jakarta Commons tools, then the Jakarta Commons Cookbook is for you. The Jakarta Commons Cookbook summarizes each of the available Jakarta Commons packages and contains practical and efficient recipes for making the most out of the Jakarta Commons open source Java tools. You don't have to be an expert, since the book explains how and why to use a utility, pitfalls to avoid, and where to look for additional information on Jakarta Commons utilities. It introduces design possibilities and explores combining Jakarta Commons utilities in novel assemblies to create complex applications. The book offers detailed code samples and insider tips--making it a valuable resource whether you are an expert Java developer or a novice. If you want to quickly learn how to use Jakarta Commons timing-saving utilities or have an invaluable resource for Jakarta Commons questions and techniques, then the Jakarta Commons Cookbook is for you.
Customer Reviews:
Good introductory book to commons.......2007-03-30
This book serves as a good introduction to commons project. It gave me a brief overview and applicability of the projects. Though the Cookbook doesn't serve as a exhaustive reference in itself, it starts the ground work .
Good but still lacks some features.......2005-09-19
It is a very good book, but there is some stuff that's missing and it's important, like Commons Validator
A pretty specific cookbook.......2005-05-03
This book does provide a good overview of some of the most popular libraries in the Commons project. Although I have read and enjoyed several other Cookbook style books on more general topics, I did not find this one as useful. This is because the Jakarata Commons recipies are very speicific, and cover a wide array of unrelated topics. If you have a specific need that is covered, you will likely find the book helpful. Otherwise, it may be like some of the real cookbooks in my kitchen that are interesting, but rarely used.
a review of Jakarta Commons Cookbook.......2005-04-14
The Jakarta Commons Cookbook provides an excellent resource into the many useful features and functions in the Apache Jakarta Commons libraries. In addition to the nice cookbook style, there are large numbers of examples in one single volume. This is an indispensable book for the Java developers who want to understand the Jakarta Commons libraries.
Well documented tools for Java developers to common problems.......2005-03-04
How many times do you find a solution written for your last project to be equally applicable to your current problem but too closely coupled to reuse without adapting code in copy-and-paste style? Even worse, when bug is found you have to patch the same solution differently amongst relevant projects. While open source and Java mean free, community support, and options, Jakarta Commons bring the next level of productivity and ease of maintenance. Being one of the contributors, the author introduces the audience components refactored from more elaborated projects in an easily referenced form of tips and cautions.
How many times do you end up disappointed when a primitive function is expected from the language with its Javadoc being searched through? Even though you find it from the latest release, sometimes upgrading the runtime environment is not an option. Language supplements are described like Jakarta Commons being the lead of the direction the language should be steered towards. Text manipulation is so universal where handy utilities are illustrated. JavaBeans, a simple yet versatile convention, deserve a helper library that eases your life. Feature rich collections, command line interface, properties configuration, logging, and networking I/O are clearly mentioned. By practical to conceptual ideas, the math library is employed to estimate the amount of time left in long running processes. Arbitrary complexity of comparison and sorting is managed by means of functors.
The author intends to be neither comprehensive nor surveying options to a problem. Nonetheless, it is inconvenient to have no source available for download. With the book in its first edition, there exists missing cross reference and code inaccuracy sometimes is obvious. By including instructions for the use with Maven, those new to the framework may be confused. Coverage of advanced topics like XML, web development with templating, WebDAV, and indexing are not sufficient. After the book is glanced through, it is really desirable to see how the author can deploy the same way of presentation to areas where no thorough documentation of good quality ever exists.
