Customer Reviews:
Best of the Internet by PC MAGAZINE.......2007-02-07
The list of websites dates back to 2004 which is a generation ago in Internet time. Half of these websites are already closed down or at least out of touch or simply outdated. The book is a waste of money and should no longer be offered for sale as anything as an antique
Long-winded and too close to the straight and narrow .......2005-05-05
Many of us have the sinking feeling that the Internet is starting to resemble television. As the saying goes, "There are 500 television stations, but nothing's on." Estimates vary about the number of Web sites on the Internet. By some estimates, there are 300 million. Which means there are 300 million Web sites and nothing's on. Most of the Web sites aren't worth visiting.
The author of "Best of the Internet" wants to direct you to the Web sites that are worth going to. To that end, he has assembled some 1,000 Web site names and descriptions into 19 categories -- reference, communicating, computing, entertainment, news, sports, hobbies, family, education, health, lifestyles, religion, finance, careers, shopping, travel, government, and the weird.
If you are willing to trudge through this book's 420 pages, you will find more than a few good Web sites. I found a number of good online stores, for example. But the problem with this book is that the author mostly presents the tried and true. He doesn't stray from the beaten track. You discover Web sites that you could probably find on your own or already know about.
I thought the book book presented far too many corporate Web sites. Do I need to know that Disney.com is a good family-oriented Web site? The author could have searched a little farther for eccentric Web sites that are of interest to families. I find corporate Web sites dull and uninspiring, but many are listed in this book.
Another thing: The Web site descriptions are long-winded. By the time you read some of these descriptions, you could have visited the Web site on your own and decided for yourself whether it is worth visiting.
I hope if the author revises this book that he cuts back on the Web site descriptions and gives us more Web sites instead. How about 2,000 Web sites next time instead of 1,000, with fewer words to describe each Web site?
Thorough and Engaging.......2004-10-15
I expected this book to be comprehensive, and that it is. What's more, Willmott serves as a useful filter for all the clutter and nonsense that litters the Internet. What surprised me was the level of humor throughout. Willmott's expertise and engaging writing make this book worth returning to again and again.
Ignores gambling.......2004-08-20
It is an apparent paradox that with the Internet and search engines so accessible, why would you need a book that lists over 1000 useful websites? Google and yahoo can point you to millions. But this very plentitude breeds its own problems. Whose opinions about a website can you deem reliable? Which leaves an important role for PC Magazine (and others). Hence the value of what Willmott gives us. He's one of the editors of this well regarded magazine.
The book has a top-down arrangement based on broad topics like sports, hobbies and computing. Within each are the websites he considers most popular or authoritative.
The biggest flaw in this book is its omission of gambling. Massively popular, and the top websites generate considerable revenue. They can actually charge for usage! How many other websites are as fortunate? Some gambling websites are also changing the real life dynamics of their games. For example, the last 2 world poker championship winners trained via online poker games. Granted, in the US there may be regulatory constraints on offshore betting. But this publisher (Wiley), and surely too the author, sell to a global audience. Non-Americans, in general, do not face such constraints.
lots of good ideas.......2004-02-17
There are so many interesting sites listed and suggestions for ways to save money in here that I think it'll keep me busy exploring for months. Even if you think you know your way around the Web you'll find something new. I'd also suggest it for people who are new to the Web and don't appreciate all that's out there beyond the usual sites that everyone knows. And the "weird" section cracked me up.
Book Description
Chinas financial markets represent about $2 trillion and are expected to grow to about $10 trillion by 2008. As these markets continue to open to outside investment, a thorough understanding of how they operate will be essential for success. In this book, Salih Neftci, an expert in finance whose teaching and research span North America, Europe and Asia, and Michelle Menager-Xu, a Chinese finance professional currently working in Geneva, bring together an unprecedented collection of Chinese insiders who are experts in their respective industries. These experts provide a detailed description of the banking system, the money, equity, futures, FX, and bond markets, the insurance sector, the mortgage market and mortgage instruments, and the regulators. Readers will learn how each of these financial sectors operates, how the government, regulators, and the central bank are involved, each sectors history, size and projected growth, an analysis of its current situation and discussion of future trends, the major players, and how the game is played. This is a must-read book for financial success in this emerging market.
*Experts within China working in each sector provide detailed, completely up-to-date descriptions and analysis
*CDROM contains English translations of relevant Chinese regulations not available elsewhere
*Describes how the major regulators work and the key influence factors in each industry
Customer Reviews:
Good book on the basics.......2007-05-10
I very much enjoyed this book discussing China's financial markets. There are very few books available in English which cover this information. This book does not have the same political commentary as Bloomberg Press' China's Stockmarket.
I'd love to have more detail in each chapter, but this book is designed to provide a general overview of various financial markets in the People's Republic of China and contrasts China's markets with US and European markets.
The language in the book isn't very technical and anyone with a basic knowledge of the markets should be able to understand.
Excellent and exciting reading. Delta = opportunity.......2007-04-16
What is famous professor of Financial Engineering Salih N. Neftci doing writing about China's financial markets? What could this possibly have to do with his excellent work demonstrating equivalent cash flows and creating synthetic instruments?
Well "omnia et nihilos" (everything and nothing). Neftci's welcome clarity is once again evident here (this time with an edditor's hand), and his efficiency in breaking down topics into digestible bites is also very much in evidence. But Neftci must have picked up his interest in China's growing financial markets from the (now a whole generation) of the excellent Chinese students he has trained. Undoubtedly his students are well placed on Wall Street, China, and globally and this book will bridge their financial engineering skills with this essential study of this important emerging market's microstructure.
This is an excellent reference tool for those interested in the development of financial markets in China and would make a wonderful gift from CLSA for those who attend its annual Shanghai-Hong Kong two-week conference on Asian investments. The CLSA conference is justifiably famous for having the best speakers, firms, institutional investors, and discussions.
Hong Kong-based shareholder activist David Webb has long pointed to the dangers of minority shareholding and security holding in the Hong Kong market (and Taiwan). In Neftci's "China's Financial Markets: An Insider's Guide to How the Markets Work" Webb's concerns are amplified for the mainland China markets as well.
The Shanghai and other mainland Chinese markets are rapidly evolving, and such concepts as a limited liability non-natural person owner (a corporation), the ability to short stock (possible for floor traders, not possible for investors), and the repatriazation of profits are among the challenges that need to be faced as Chinese regulators and a global investor class seek to deploy capital efficiently. The contributions of expert Chinese insiders provide descriptions of the banking system, the mortgage, money, equity, futures, FX, and bond markets, and the all-important capital formation arms of the insurance sector. The baffling roles of government, regulators, and the now globally-powerful Chinese central bank are also covered.
Size alone won't cure poor regulatory environment or respect for property rights and repatriazation of profits. Nevertheless China's financial markets currently represent about $3 trillion and are expected to grow to "about $10 trillion by 2008." In ths face of such rapid change (delta = opportunity) it is no wonder that the master of the greeks Salih Neftci wrote this wonderful book. An excellent thoughtful work that provided first-class information and could easily have been double the size.
inside on china financial market.......2007-02-23
This book has great details on current status, issues on china finanial markets include equity, fixed income, mortgage. most important , it discusses the future trends with deep inside.
I also like Neftci's book "principal of financial engineer" with precise description on important conception.

Book Description
This volume includes selected chapters from the annual proceedings of the Fordham Corporate Law Institute. The general subject is the reform of EC competition law enforcement. This has been the subject of many Fordham conferences over the years. Indeed, EC Commission officials have stated that the modern reform proposals presently being considered had their roots at Fordham.
The present volume includes seminal articles and critiques of the EC competition law regime as well as very recent discussions of the Commission's proposal for reform. Because much of the literature on EC competition law reform is scattered, the present volume should be useful in including in one place a broad selection of articles and roundtable discussions.
The chapters cover not only institutional and jurisdictional issues like decentralization and sharing of powers between the Commission and the EC member states, but also substantive issues like the scope of Article 81 and the rule(s) of reason. These and other issues are examined from both an analytical and historical perspective which greatly facilitates understanding of the future implications of the reform measures presently being debated.
In sum, the chapters are not merely of historical interest: problems and questions of ongoing importance are discussed.

Book Description
Tiki bar mixology is a lost art--but the Grog Log rescues it. A twenty-page introduction traces the history of Polynesian Pop, then teaches you everything you need to know about how to make the Grog Log's eighty tropical drink recipies. Many of these recipies have never before been published anywhere--including vintage "lost" recipies by Don the Beachcomber, Trader Vic, and long-gone Polynesian restaurants from the island of Manhattan to the islands of Hawaii. Profusely illustrated with vintage tiki menu graphics from the '50 and '60s, with cover art by famed Exotica artist Bosko.

At this price? UN-BEE-LIEVE-ABLY good.......2007-08-28
I am a cocktail snob and emmersed in tiki culture and the Atomic Age. Get this fantastic tome, a bottle of Falernum and Orgeat and your bar stuff, plus my Grogalizer found on my Swank Pad site and you are making the best cocktails on earth. No one should be without this book!
The ONLY Tiki Recipe book you'll ever need.......2005-04-18
Joe Bob Briggs from UPI called this "the best bartender's guide for tropical and rum drinks ever published". That, my friends, is an understatement. Forget those fancy and useless trendy tiki books that have to be gussied up with Shag illustrations and glossy printing, if you've already bought those: use 'em as coasters for the wonderfully entertaining and informative "Grog Log". From a pair who can navigate the tikiphyte through the Singapore Slings and arrows of the sugary crap that give tropical drinks a bad name. Easily worth 5 times the cover price, "The Grog Log" and the follow-up "Intoxica!" are the only Tiki drink books you'll ever need or want.
The Bible.......2004-02-07
Alright, I'm going to keep it short and to the point. I'm a Tiki geek, I've got every book related to the subject and, along with The Book of Tiki, this book and it's sequal Intoxica are the Holy Trinity of the Tiki Religion. There is no better book on Tropical Drinks anywhere, ever. Buy it. Now.
One of a pair: Tropical immortality........2004-01-31
I essentially have the same review for both this book and Berry's follow-up book, Intoxica: Jeff (Beachbum) Berry is, without question, the most learnéd authority on "tiki" beverages alive today. The cheap production characteristics of the book in no way detract from that fact, and it will be evident to both drink historians and harkeners after the tiki experience alike. Well-considered recipes, delicious and examined minutely=buy this book.
WARNING: Self Serving Review ..........2002-04-24
Aloha! I am the editor of this fine publication (and the owner of more than one completely stained, well worn copy) and wanted to throw in a quick pitch about the Grog Log's place amidst the bevy of "Trendy Tiki Drink Books of Questionable Quality".
If you are a Tiki Freak / Cocktail Enthusiast who legitimately wants to experience these classic recipes in their original, robust forms, the Grog Log is the only way to go. I sought out Jeff Berry after seeing his original self-published Grog Log five or six years ago. I was intensely facinated by these old restaurants and all of the amazingly complex creations they served. No matter how many modern (or vintage) drink books I came across none captured the true nature of these original (mostly) rum drinks (with the possible exception of some of the classics in Trader Vic's own line or the Hawaii Kai Cookbook). Jeff's self-published, xeroxed zine was the only authentic source.
We decided to team up to do an expanded mass produced version of the book to make it available to a wider (although niche) audience. Since that time (1998) the Tiki craze has exploded and more Tiki-focused drink books have been released. Don't get me wrong ... I own each of them myself ... for the most part the art, design, and production make them interesting ... but for actual recipe content they are sadly lacking. If you really want to dial up the way back machine and sip with the Masters (Trader Vic, Donn Beach, etc.) the Grog Log is for you.
NEWSFLASH: Jeff and I are just about done with a sequel to the Grog Log titled "Intoxica!" to be released in the Summer of '02. Check back often to Amazon.com as they'll be selling it once it's available. Mahalo!

Book Description
New Orleans natives Rickey and G-man are lifetime friends and down-and-out line cooks desperate to make a quick buck. When Rickey concocts the idea of opening a restaurant in their alcohol-loving hometown where every dish packs a spirited punch, they know they’re on their way to the bank. With some wheeling and dealing, a slew of great recipes, and a few lucky breaks, Rickey and G-man are soon on their way to opening Liquor, their very own restaurant. But ?rst they need to pacify a local crank who doesn’t want to see his neighborhood disturbed, sidestep Rickey’s deranged ex-boss, rein in their big-mouth silent partner before he runs amok, and stay afloat in a stew of corruption in a town well known for its bottom feeders.
A manic, spicy romp through the kitchens, back alleys, dive bars, and drug deals of the country’s most sublimely ridiculous city, author Poppy Z. Brite masterfully shakes equal parts ambition, scandal, ?lé powder, cocaine, and murder, and serves
Liquor straight up, with a twist.
Customer Reviews:
Food Porn.......2007-09-27
I really enjoyed Liquor, and look forward to purchasing some more writings about Rickey and G-Man, and their fabulous themed restaurant Liquor.
I first started reading Poppy's works when I began working at The Hellfire Club in Sydney. Her darker themes delighted me, and I found them page-turners.
Funnily enough, as she has moved on to food related stuff, so have I, becoming a dining reviewer. So it seems only appropriate that I continue my journey with her works reminding me of the behind-the-scenes story of the places I review - to take care, and to realise it is the passion, heart and soul of many chefs.
Thank you Poppy... I only wish I could eat at Liquor!
Why did I wait so long to read this?.......2007-09-07
I have been reading Brite's blog for ages and for some reason I just kept putting off reading the Liquor books (at that time only Liquor and Prime). I have no idea why, I did like her early work, but like her I've outgrown that genre as well so it's not like I wanted to keep reading that kind of book from her.
I finally got over it and bought the dang book, and you know what, from that first page it was like I was home. I used to live in New Orleans (no I'm not from there, there is a difference) and I love and miss it. The minute I started reading Liquor it was like I was back there, Ricky and G-man were like old friends, probably because I had many friends who worked in kitchens across the city. It hooked me, and I'm still hooked by the characters, New Orleans, and most definitely the food.
I sincerely hope that Brite gives us more of these characters, but I definitely won't hold it against her if she doesn't because I'm happy to have been able to visit them at all.
I loved this book........2007-01-29
This was a fantastic read. I devoured it after a 10-hour drive; that should tell you what I thought about its readability.
The food writing is as enthusiastic as anything Ruth Reichl has written. The plot, though not the book's most memorable element, moves along and contains enough "special moments" - be they tender, exciting, or delicious - to make the novel a real success. It is fitting that the book contains a dedication to John Kennedy Toole (author of A Confederacy of Dunces), as Liquor also pays loving homage to New Orleans.
Although characters could have been more carefully drawn in places, Liquor was just too darned enjoyable for anything but five stars. I'm anxious to see how the characters grow in later books.
I really enjoyed this book.......2006-10-03
I picked up this book because I didn't have anything else to read and it was on sale. Although it doesn't follow Brites' normal horror direction, I found myself loving this book. It's a quick read, which I am not always a fan of, but the book is simply too good to hold that against it.
The characters are well developed and you find yourself wanting to warn them about what's to come. Although I know little about restaurants except hanging out in whatever bar my father worked at when I was young and a brief stint in the food court in high school; I wanted to be in these kitchens.
Give it a shot, I bet you'd love it.
This book made me want to stick my face in a bread pudding with whiskey sauce.......2006-08-17
I don't know how I missed this series. A native of New Orleans, I have been a fan of Poppy Z. Brite since reading "Lost Souls" years ago while living in New York. Brite gives her readers the real dish on the New Orleans restaurant scene with characters not unlike my own friends and family, but with a universal appeal. You don't have to be a native of New Orleans to love these guys. I couldn't put this book down. I did, however, tend to eat a lot more while reading this.

Awesome Book.......2005-01-19
Liquor house Music is a wondeful book to have. It is very deep and whether we know it these situations that the characters go through do happen to in our everyday society. I can't wait for Katrina's next book because once you read the first couple inserts you will want this book.
"MMMMMMMMM NO SHE DIDN'T!".......2004-10-28
Liquor House Music is a must read book. It is not a typical predictable book. The book was funny, serious, shocking and sad. I actually laughed out loud and shedded some tears. I remember saying "mmmmmmmmm NO she didn't". I can hardly wait for the author's next book!
