3 out of 5 stars Definately Needs Improvement.......2007-10-25

A lot of more qualified voices have voiced their opinions on the APA manual so I won't try to cover everything. I do teach a class that covers experimental approaches, however, and this class is basically bathed in the light of the APA manual. Because of that I have found some really serious flaws in the manual's presentation and want to cover the most glaring problem I have seen in he APA manual to date because it bothered me even as a student.
The example paper - what a bad joke.

Instead of giving you a paper done in correct APA format, the example provided in the book is one that is marked and remarked with all types of errors. It is a basic attempt to show you what is what in the word of errors and, to a point, it helps. The problem with it is that there isn't a paper that shows how to do a correct paper in APA. This can create all kinds of quandaries because it doesn't help you when you are trying to make sure you did everything correctly. Sure, you can flip through the manual and make sure everything is right and this wonderfully time-consuming method does work ONCE YOU'VE MASTERED the manual. When you've just begun - that's a different matter.

Because of that, I would suggest getting a book with something that shows how to do things correctly just in case. Otherwise, you could accidentally make a mistake because you looked at the manual that is supposed to be your pilot. I would also suggest a guide if you are new for other reasons, namely the little things that escape lectures. Comma rules that aren't really the best type of rules, the number counts allowed in specific areas like an abstract, the way a Running head has to be presented, and the drove of rules concerning tables and graphs that people normally miss.
It never hurts to be over-prepared, and especially so when the guidebook reads like a technical manual written in its own tongue.

3 out of 5 stars APA Manual.......2007-10-24

I purchased this book because it is a requirement for my program at school. I purchased the spiral bound copy because I'll be using it often and wanted something that I can keep open on the page that I'm using. I'm glad that I did. Amazon delivered as promised in time for my first class, however the first copy I received had many of its pages out of order, and I had to wait for a replacement copy. Now for the text itself, I find it inadequate, and I am glad that my college provided a class to supplement the text. It is not at all complete in its explanations and I made profuse notes in the margins with information gleaned from the class. Since the APA style writing is so much a part of my program, this book is very necessary yet challenging to me and I am finding it not to be very user friendly. Hopefully it will seem better as I become more proficient in the APA style of writing. But for now I have little option but to get used to it since this is the manual of the APA. They could have done a better job in putting it together.

1 out of 5 stars Badly Organized Manual.......2007-10-23

This book jumps all over the place and is very confusing. For example, detailed instructions for how to include various forms of electronic media in the reference section should be RIGHT NEXT TO how they are cited within the text. But instead the instructions for citing within the text are in some completely different universe within the book. This is not so much a manual as a melting pot of random information. Occasionally it appears to be working well, delivering information logically, and then suddenly the next obvious step is missing. Very, very strange for a field that studies what drives people crazy.

3 out of 5 stars APA Publication Manual.......2007-10-17

This book has a lot of info included in it. Sometimes takes a bit to find what you are looking for, but when you do it is all spelled out for you. A must have if you are writing in APA format.

3 out of 5 stars Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (Fifth Edition.......2007-10-05

This book is o.k. but has way too much information for the average college student who just wants the bare basic facts to get through a writing assignment. It took longer to find the information I needed than it did to write the paper.
I am glad that I chose the spiral format in that it is extremely easy to work with as opposed to the traditional bounded style book.
For someone who plans on writing a lot of papers this book is a must.

1 out of 5 stars What in the world?.......2004-05-31

I have always had a profound interest in the history of American labor and particularly, the struggles that have taken place over time in labor. However, this book did absolutely nothing to add to my knowledge on the subject or even inspire me to read more about the themes within the book itself. I was extremely disappointed with the editor and his lack of understanding and attention to true detail. Perhaps the better title of this book would be, "Myths and Legends of U.S. Labor in the 20th Century." This is certainly not a history text of any kind. If I wanted to read radical fiction, I could have read a "Star Trek" book or something like that.

2 out of 5 stars Vaguely Intertesting book, horrible editing.......2001-08-10

I am a historian and find this topic to be extremly fascinating and important in US history. However, this book came up EXTREMELY short. The topic was poorly covered and the book was an extremly boreing read, even for a nonfiction history study. Also John Hinshaws editing left a lot to be desired. This could be one of the worst jobs of editing I have seen in my 40 years as a professor of history.

5 out of 5 stars Brief explanation and Table of Contents.......2001-01-31

I'm one of the editors, so of course, this is a great book. It's probably most useful for historians, labor educators, and those interested in US labor radicalism. The book has some classic articles by radical scholars and activists (Harry Braverman, James Matles of the UE), combined with some recent scholarly work by radical historians and activists (Joe Trotter, General Baker). I've included the table of contents for you to examine. JH

5 out of 5 stars Laugh out Loud Funny.......2002-02-07

This book made me laugh when I wanted to cry and kept my perspective on the crazy world of relationships. Anna and Elliot are a riot and if you're looking for a book that offers great insights about the sexes in a sharp, humorous fashion--GET THIS BOOK! I highly recommend it! (It makes a fabulous affordable gift too!)

1 out of 5 stars Not so good..........2001-09-25

Just didn't find it all that funny.
At the very least, the first chapter was balanced in terms of equal parts cloyingly sacchrine cuteness and actual humor.
The rest of the book attempts to be funny by heavy-handed dependence on the broadest and most outdated of gender generalizations. I felt lucky(and toward the end, amazed) if I came across one line per remaining chapter capable of even making me smile and there were definitely not any laugh out loud moments within the entire book. But the multiple positive reviews printed on the covers did make me laugh at least, since they were so far off the mark.
I have a friend who thrives on defining his world strictly by generalizations and so I will be passing it on to him for the final litmus test. He's also going thru a divorce and lives in the suburbs, so perhaps he is closer to the actual target audience.
More than anything, I found the book to be kind of sad because it reminded me that this is really how alot of people think. And just to provide more insight on me, I'm a 35 year old female who recently got out of a relationship with sticky communication issues.
I found the majority of the book to be obnoxious, overdone and obvious as opposed to subtle and clever. Who knows? Perhaps I'm just not mainstream enough to "get" this kind of humor.

4 out of 5 stars Like looking into the fun-house mirror.......2001-04-03

I almost didn't buy this book because of the title. I'm not too fond of parodies. I actually own the other "serious" version of this book & found it much harder to read than this humorous but no less true version. I'd love to see these SuC in person :)

This book helped me keep my kewl during the end of a nasty relationship, helped me laugh when I was tired of crying, and helped me see my part in a humorous, easy-to-swallow format. My relationship is still ending, but now I feel much better about it, having regianed my ability to laugh at humanity thanks to this book. I highly recommend it as a gift to newlyweds, singles & long-marrieds alike--in essence, to anyone who has ever been in a relationship with the opposite sex!

5 out of 5 stars Funny and Oh sooooo true.......2000-07-13

This book is hysterical. The humorous advice sometimes is better than the real thing. I have given it as a gift to many people and they really enjoyed it. The pictures are funny and add to the book. A must to lightening up any relationship. I also enjoy Anna Collins work in The Estrogen Files.Net.

          5 out of 5 stars I loved its irreverlance........1999-04-07

I enjoyed its satire and wit. Not since Madam Wong's Guide To Men and Other Difficulites, have I gotten such a laugh.

            Book Description

Playing on the Periphery is an innovative exploration along the edges of the modern sports experience. Using unusual case studies and covering a range of issues, it examines how the cultural content of sports that were once the epitome of Englishness - football, cricket and rugby - has moved away from the traditional mainstream, reinterpreted by the distant cultures of a former Empire, and fragmented by the new media and economics of the modern world.
From a unique perspective and with a distinctive voice, Tara Brabazon considers sport as it relates to tourism, colonialism and popular culture. She shows how, through the media's filter - through photographs and film, stadiums, shops and exhibition spaces - sport can acquire multiple and diverse meanings. Though it may appear peripheral, as a focus for collective emotion sport is at the center of society.
For all those interested in sport, media and popular culture, this is a stimulating new text.

The DocBook SGML specification allows publishers to mark up text content to be used in traditional print as well as on the Web. DocBook: The Definitive Guide examines and catalogs the entirety of the DocBook specification and will be useful to anyone who uses SGML to publish documents.

DocBook uses SGML to structure the contents of a book, identifying such elements as authors, chapters, headings, and so on. The heart of DocBook: The Definitive Guide lies in its full reference of over 300 DocBook elements, organized alphabetically (from "Abbrev" to "Year"). The syntax of each element is described, along with sample SGML code illustrating its proper usage.

This book assumes a working knowledge of SGML, though basic concepts are described during the introduction. Later reference sections present a wide range of DocBook "entities." (These are values that can be used to describe custom content within a DocBook document.) Character entities, codes used to describe diacritics and mathematical symbols, are also listed.

Later sections address DocBook customization, including removal of unused elements. As you might expect, no single publishing scheme employs every SGML element available; however, like any good reference, it includes a discussion of each element that could conceivably be used. Another useful section discusses the relationship between DocBook and XML, including the fairly simple conversion possibilities for cross-translating these markup types.

DocBook is a powerful way to distribute books, both in traditional print and online. Provided you have some knowledge of SGML, anyone who makes use of the DocBook specification will benefit from this worthy reference. --Richard Dragan

                Book Description

DocBook: The Definitive Guide is the complete and official documentation of the DocBook Document Type Definition (DTD) and many of its associated tools. DocBook is a system for writing structured documents using SGML and XML. It provides all the elements you'll need for technical documents of all kinds. A number of computer companies use DocBook for their documentation, as do several Open Source documentation groups, including the Linux Documentation Project (LDP). With the consistent use of DocBook, these groups can readily share and exchange information. With an XML-enabled browser, DocBook documents are as accessible on the Web as in print. DocBook: The Definitive Guide was written by Norman Walsh, the author of the XML implementation of the DocBook DTD; and Leonard Muellner, the manager of O'Reilly & Associates' Production Tools Group. In this book, you'll find: In addition, the CDROM contains: Oasis, the organization that is the official maintainer of the DocBook DTD, has identified DocBook: the Definitive Guide as the official documentation for the DocBook DTD.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference to help you build your DTD..........2003-12-02

If you are (like I am) in a situation where you need to serve two masters with a DTD you're trying to build (the online and the print world), after your first or second rough passes at putting it together yourself (there's a great many tools out there to help you in this, of which I personally recommend XMLSpy from Altova), then is when O'Reilly's DocBook will come in handy. The matter of the fact is that, no matter how much brain you put into the creation of a multi-purpose DTD: these guys thought it over several times a while before you, but granted that you might not have a use for a vast majority of the elements presented in DocBook, it will help get your feet out of the mud when in trouble and you don't know how to deal with a very particular situation.

The only "negative" part about it is that, with its print date of 1999, it is clearly outdated, but who cares, when even an outdated version of the standard will be considerably better than what you can come up with on your own!

4 out of 5 stars Nice, but not really required.......2002-12-09

The problem with this book is never up to date with the latest and gratest DocBook stuff. You can download a copy of the reference guide for free, so why would you need a hard copy?

I think the main reason for buying this book is to say thank you to Norman Walsh, we has been the DocBook lead for ages, and we all know he does a great job. From that perspective, this book is definitely a must.

                5 out of 5 stars Definitive Guide.......2002-04-13

I recommend this book to anyone starting on the road to DocBook. Not only is it useful for the new user, like I was, it has a comprehensive reference section for all the elements of the DocBook SGML.

                4 out of 5 stars A Useful Book for SGML/DocBook Authors.......2001-06-01

This book presents full detail on the use of the DocBook "DTD," documenting the various sorts of elements that can be used to structure a sophisticated technical document.

DocBook supports all the sorts of titles, subtitles, paragraphs, tables, itemized environments, and such that are likely to be needed to produce something like a book, and this book documents in goodly detail the hundreds of such "document elements," and how they are put together.

There is an introductory section which swiftly runs through an overview of SGML/XML, and describes how DocBook may be customized. The book contains more documentation about the DSSSL rendering language than seems to be available anywhere else, although if there is to be disappointment in the book, it is in that "more than anywhere else" still isn't quite enough.

The body of the book then goes into detail on each and every document element. This is necessarily dry material, fortunately combined with often-humorous examples of how to use the elements.

What may NOT be obvious from the book is what tools should be used to edit DocBook documents, and what the production process should be like. Briefly, the more sophisticated the text editor, the better (in a word, Emacs!), and production usually to involve some sort of "batch" process that transforms DocBook into HTML, RTF, or TeX output.

The most visible users of DocBook are the many "Open Source" and "Free Software" projects that often surround Linux. Perhaps most well-known is the Linux Documentation Project, though DocBook is used for MANY other things. I prepare my own web pages using DocBook, for instance.

The existing tools for DocBook have the strength (over, say, using raw HTML) that they can automatically generate internal crossreferences, tables of contents, and the likes. A weakness is that other sorts of references (indexes, bibliographies) likely need programmed intervention. [Be prepared to write code...]

If you're planning to write technical documentation using DocBook, this is an excellent reference that you will likely greatly appreciate having. Personally, I prefer having a "dead trees" edition to page through to mousing through the online versions.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference with a couple of flaws.......2001-05-13

The DocBook standard is a way of marking up a document so it can be printed in multiple ways. The benefit is that the document you create contains only the content -- if you want to generate web pages, or a printable file, the same source text file will do both for you. This can save you a lot of time in maintaining parallel print and web versions.

I used this book to create an employee handbook for my company in both print and web formats, and found it very handy, though it does have a couple of problems. Good things first: it contains a complete reference to every element in the DocBook standard, so you can look up Note or SimpleList or Article or RevHistory and find everything you need to know. This is the bulk of the book, in fact, and is what it is mostly useful for.

However, even these entries have one big flaw: they don't give you much of an indication of where they can be used. For example, if you want to add a Note to your text, can you do it from the section level, or do you have to be inside a para tag? The book won't give you this information if you look up Note--you have to look up all the different things it might be inside to find it. In practice this isn't too bad since you tend to settle down into a default set of tags you know well; it's more of a problem when you run into an exception.

The first five chapters give you an overview of SGML and XML, and then take you straight into the basics of creating DocBook documents. This section is good explanatory material and will definitely help orient you if you're not sure what DocBook can do for you. There's also a section on how to interpret OpenJade errors, which are among the least comprehensible error messages I've ever seen. This section is well-intentioned but not much use--the error messages are just too poorly written to be useful. They do give you the line number though, so that's usually where you have to start.

Installation and setup is another matter. There's an appendix which is helpful but there are a lot of pieces to get right and you should be prepared to take some time over this. Get help from someone who's done it before, if possible.

I would have liked to see a diagram of how all the pieces fit together--SGML, the parser, transformation, the DSSSL files, and the output formats. I had to draw my own to understand it.

Overall, recommended, for the explanatory material and the reference section; but it could be improved.
