Book Description

YES! You have the right book!!

For thirty (30!) years the world's best seller (printed in 28 languages), RAPID INTERPRETATION OF EKG's is the most popular and most referenced of all EKG (ECG) texts. But beware... success breeds imitations.

Competitors, aware of its longstanding success, imitate this classic by using synonyms for RAPID or INTERPRETATION or by substituting "ECG's" for EKG's. Don't be deceived by the numerous look-alikes with enticing titles. There is only one RAPID INTERPRETATION OF EKG's.

Now it is the most current text of its kind, since it is updated yearly. Extensively illustrated and simplified to assure rapid comprehension, an entire chapter is easily consumed and mastered in a sitting. In the process of learning EKG interpretation, the reader gains a deeper understanding of cardiac physiology. Emphasis is on UNDERSTANDING rather than memorizing, so readers quickly acquire a lifetime of practical knowledge.

    Book Description

This book analyses the rhetorical background and strategies of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) and those of Ronald Reagan in reference to the 1981 strike. Was firing 11,000 federal employees the only option, or the best option available? The work examines the applicable federal statute, which provided and encouraged more leeway than the administration exercised; the stormy relations between the controllers and the Federal Aviation Administration; and the development of the rhetorical persona of Ronald Reagan, a persona favoring epideictic over deliberative rhetoric.

            Book Description

Carl Hileman's fine art photography exhibits have drawn enthusiastic viewers from around the country, mostly because his views of man's second-best friend are quirky, loving, and unique. In Cows: A Rumination, sixty of his photos are collected for the first time in book form. Using infrared, black-and-white film, his works give a glow to the cows that highlight their natural dignity and power. Words of bovine wisdom from a herd of notables — all of them, like their subjects, outstanding in their fields — pay homage to the cow in song, poetry, and humor. Contemporary contributors include renowned artist George Rodrigue, Nobel-prize winner Vernon L. Smith, and country music greats "Whisperin'" Bill Anderson, Larry Gatlin, Doug Kershaw, and Tanya Tucker. The book also includes classic ruminations from the likes of Robert Frost, Groucho Marx, and even Mrs. O'Leary, whose cow was mistakenly blamed for the great Chicago fire. By turns witty, bittersweet, and enlightening, Cows: A Rumination is a love poem to an often overlooked — but essential — member of our society.

            5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Cows.......2006-02-17

I've waited monthes for this book to come out and it sure was fantastic. The stories inside were interesting to learn about the things that I never knew about cows. I am a cow fan and animal lover. This book will be placed next to my other cow merchandise. Great book for any one who loves cows. I recommend this item.

5 out of 5 stars Really Nice Infrared Photography.......2004-12-16

I am an amateur photographer, and I know how hard it is to take pictures using infrared film. You have to load and unload the film in complete darkness, and the film can never be exposed to any light whatsoever. So I appreciate these beautiful pictures of cows very much, as I imagine they were very difficult to take. And the pictures are beautiful! And the passages of text and stories are fun to read. I will buy this for everyone on my Christmas list, kids and adults. Everyone likes cows.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow! This book is beautiful!.......2004-12-16

Rarely does a book with half-and-half photography and text succeed, as this one does. The photographs are gorgeous and speak for themselves. The book would have been lovely if kept to that. But the text passages add further depth to the experience, rounding out the images with engrossing stories, observations, and lyrical passages on these lovely creatures. One comes away with profound appreciation for the common pasture cow, and keen anticipation for Mr. Hileman's next photographic foray.

            5 out of 5 stars Understanding writing..........2005-02-26

This is a fabulous book for understanding the fundamentals of song writing. The author does a great job of explaining meter, assonance, etc. But, the business part of the book is superfluous. Though, the book does manage to list subjects areas that one should research more in depth in order to gain an insight into their true importance.

2 out of 5 stars Peekin into Nashville.......2000-04-26

Pierce provides a nice overview of two distantly related subjects - writing a good country song and the business of country music. Neither topic is developed completely, though the songwriting portion of the book is definitely more insightful and informative than the business analysis. The author briefly describes the roles played by writers, managers, publishers, labels, etc. in the country music business, but doesn't really provide the detailed information a prospective writer or artist would want or need. Royalty splits and the like are barely mentioned while the radio side of the business gets a lot of airplay. An inordinate amount of space is devoted to definitions straight out of the dictionary - yawn. The songwriting analysis of Buffet and Croce tunes is very well done, if not fascinating. The insights from various industry professionals range from useless one-paragraph postcards to very interesting multi-page interviews. All in all, a good book if you know absolutely nothing about the business of Nashville. If you want to improve your songwriting or obtain some insight on getting into the business, try some of the other titles listed above.

This is not so much an autobiography on Jerry, but more on the Seinfeld show. Everyone from Jerry, Larry David as well as the other cast member's backgrounds are included as well as how the show was pitched to NBC and the hurdles that had to be overcome before it was a success.

There are a few colour photographs in the middle as well as an index at the back. Each year of the show has a commentary of what happened both on the show and behind the scenes and how the fans reacted. Also what was going on in the star's lives at the time. A summary of each episode, who was in it, directed it and so on is also in the back of the book. Also talks about his previous book Sein Language and CD Telling You for the Last Time.

This is a must for anyone who enjoyed one of the funniest and best shows ever made.

5 out of 5 stars The book that finally explains it!.......2001-08-29

Books about the show Seinfeld and Jerry Seinfeld have become something of a major industry in the United States since the show leap-frogged from it's cult status into a bigtime ratings hit. A lot of these books recounted episodes, offered bios of the actors and had lots of information about Seinfeld's private life. What was MISSING? A book that had a lot of this information but also put it into a comedic context -- into the context of who Jerry Seinfeld was, who he is and how and why his series had such innovative humor...humor that would define a generation. This book truly explains it. It's clear that Seinfeld and his collaborator Larry David had a concept for the anti-sitcom sitcom. They were willing for it never to be aired, rather than compromise on it. They did add cast members if the network wanted...but there was no "hugging" and topics were unusual and even the comic payoffs were different than on other shows. They weren't trying to be cutting edge, they were trying to execute their creative idea with integrity. They truly didn't compromise and that's why the series remains so unusual and consistently funny to this day. Stylistically, this is a good sized book but a very quick read due to the easy writing style. Quotes are used very skillully throughout. Of all the books I've read on Jerry Seinfeld and the show, this is the best...because it explains why this show is among television comedy's best.

              4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for a Seinfeld fan.......2000-10-08

This book allocated sufficient chapters to cover issues that we needed & wanted to know about Seinfeld, the person & Seinfeld, the show. It's interesting to read about the backgrounds & humble beginnings of the 'family' members of Seinfeld mainly Larry David, Michael Richards, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis Dreyfus. I was most interested to read how the team came up with the storylines for a show about nothing, of how they came out with characters such as George, Kramer, & Elaine (life imitated art, literally). We also read about how desperate NBC was to retain the Seinfeld team for more seasons towards the end, the pay rise negotations which sparked other actors & actresses from other NBC projects to follow suits, Jerry's romance with Shosanna, & so forth. The ending of the book stated that whilst Jerry was the king of his domain, his life remained a void...which would stay corrected considering that he has since married. Not to be missed. An exciting & user friendly read.

4 out of 5 stars A must buy for a devoted Seinfeld Fan like myself.......1999-10-27

David Wild did an excelent job on this book. He gives a review of every single episode of Seinfeld up to Feb. 26, the episode where elaine thinks she is dating an African man, making it an interacial relationship. The book also has alot of trivia on the cast of characters. The book is covered with hillarious pictures of the episodes. It also has quotes from other comedians on Seinfeld like Dr. Katz and Jeff Foxworth. Excelent, excelent book.

4 out of 5 stars One of the better books about Seinfeld.......1998-12-04

Jerry Seinfeld: the Entire Domain (1998 Birch Lane Press, written by Kathleen Tracy) Perhaps the best biography to date, if in part because it's the most recent and even covers some post-TV show stuff. More oriented towards Jerry's professional life than his personal history, it almost seems at times to be a biography of the career, not the person. But there is plenty of info on Jerry's private life, his loves, his ambitions, etc. But the TV show is the reason to read this book. Tracy takes us through the entire 9 year run from conception to Finale, with lots of FAQworthy tidbits and includes an episode guide at the end. There's also a 12-page color photo section included as an added bonus.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect beginners book! Choose this and not the "dummies" book........2006-08-28

Photoshop is a complex program. Theres no doubt about it, if you're a total PS newb it can be very daunting prospect indeed. There are literally hundreds of books about Photoshop but most are aimed at the experianced, or at the very least someone who has some knowledge already of at some graphics software or other.

So then landed in my lap this book. After struggling with "Photoshop for Dummies" and others of it's ilk this book was a godsend. Whats the point of talking about text masking techniques and CMYK versus RGB when all you really want to know is what is this brush and what does it do exactly? And this book is aimed squarely at this hapless audience, i.e. me. It has a series of logical steps that lead you steadily and carefully by the arm through all PS's set of labyrinthine and amazing (and you will be amazed) menus, tools, and functions. And it does it all very well apart from the occasional hiccup when something doesn't quite make sense, which leads me on the final chapters, or hours, of the lessons in this book, which is where it starts to come apart unfortunately.

The problem comes when it finally comes to the knotty task of original composition, and here it's as clear as mud. For instance in hour 18 it asks you to create a background using the gradient tool.. but it hasn't taught you about how to use that yet, that doesn't come until later in hour 20. Oops. Whats worse is the rest of the task is simply too advanced for the reader at this level of tuition to be able to grasp. Later in hour 20 it asks again for a original composition and reason goes completely awol, totally out the window here too. For instance: "Make a selection of the upper third of the sky... add clouds... and then do the same with the lower half". Right, so is that half the remaining two thirds of the sky or half the rest of the picture or what?!? Then: "I just create a brush that looks like a boat and add them to the picture..." uh, how do I do that then? Nowhere does it explain in the book how to do this. Theres some poor editing in the in the final chapters and it's a shame because it really lets the side down and it drops my review from a 5 to a 4 star.

However if you can ignore the hapless attempts at tuition at original art and when it sticks to what it's good at, namely teaching you the basics of what the various tools are and how they work, and fortunately thats 95% of this book, then it's very good indeed. This is simply the only Photoshop book thats aimed at newbies that I've come across that actually does what it says on the label. Highly recommended.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Intrigued by the title's promise, I recently checked out a book called "Sam's Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop CS2 in 24 Hours" written by Carla Rose. I design newspaper and magazine ads, brochures, fliers, posters, web pages and newsletters for an art museum. I've learned to use most of my software programs by the seat of my pants with only a handful of one-day workshop training programs. The trouble with 8 hour workshops is they are only effective, for me, if I can return to work and immediately apply the new knowledge to my daily tasks.

I've been using Adobe Photoshop for about two years, to crop and resize photos and to change them from color to grey scale. Most of the other skills I brought back from my workshops were quickly forgotten. Trying to retrieve this information, months later, for a special application was extremely frustrating and usually resulted in me altering my designs to accommodate my limited skills.

I don't know how long it would actually take for me to find twenty-four free hours in my busy job. But, what I did find in this book is a very clear and concise primer on "How to do just about anything you'd ever need to do with Adobe Photoshop." Even if you don't have time to actually "do" the chapter lessons, this format makes it easy to access information and directions on how to do anything you want to do in Adobe Photoshop CS2.

The book is divided into 24 "hour" chapters that start with a bulleted list of what you'll learn in the hour along with "Did You Know" and "By the Way" tips presented as sidebars which are easy to ignore or access depending on your skill level. The chapters end with a summary along with a short Q&A workshop, a quiz and applicable exercises. Again, making it easy to skip information if you don't need it or don't have the desire, or time to become an expert. The lessons are loaded with illustrations, conveniently placed near the explanatory text, making it unnecessary to flip through pages. It also includes a "Color Gallery", a group of plates that clearly illustrate some of the important color applications.

The book starts with the basics of learning how to create a new image, finding out what's in your toolbox, along with an excellent shortcut chart, and what all the menu options are. The book ends with an appendix of illustrations for each of the 17 program palettes.

I would recommend "Sam's Teach Yourself Adobe Photoshop CS2 in 24 Hours" to anyone who uses Adobe Photoshop. Even if you don't have the latest version of Photoshop, you can still find clear directions for how to select areas, transform images, adjust colors, use layers, create paths, work with text, apply masks and filters, repair and enhance photographs and prepare your documents for printing or the web. For serious Photoshop users there are 2 chapters devoted to special effects, plug-ins and add-ons.

Compared to my New Rider's thousand page tome, "Adobe Photoshop: Limited Edition" written by Gary and Barbara Bouton, accessing information in this book felt like a walk in the park. I especially appreciated the author's straight forward style with none of the cutesy, made-up characters and scenarios that I find so tedious in the popular "for dummies" books.

2 out of 5 stars Forget Sams Teach Yourself Photoshop CS2!.......2005-10-06

This book is a great disappointment. I learnt more about removing 'red eye' from photographs from the Adobe Help files than from this expensive book. A chatty approach, not very practical. I am now going to buy a copy of Classroom in a Book (Photoshop CS2) as it has been recommended by friends and has many stars in the Amazon reviews.

              2 out of 5 stars boring..........2005-08-27

Well, maybe this is not the worst PS CS2 book, since I haven't read all books available on this subject. But I have to say it is a pretty boring one. The authors throw out lots of conceptual stuff before really going into each topic covered, maybe good for pros, but definitely a disaster for beginners. I am not sure what kind of readers the authors had in their minds when wrote the book. Beginners? then the book is sometimes very confusing for a novice without much experience on PS; pros? the whole book talks about very basic stuff not interesting to anyone who has used PS for a while.

Overall, the book is very boring and somewhat difficult to follow. If you check out the earlier editions in this series (teach yourself PS in 24 hrs), you'll find out they didn't get a decent feedback except for some comments from the so called Adobe Certified Experts saying 'this is really good'. Well, being Certified Experts only means you have good skills in using PS. When it comes to judging a book, I'd rather trust readers like myself. Actually, I have gone through reviews of most PS (7, CS and CS2) books I could find on Amazon. You know what? This series is probably the only one which got bad reviews consistently. So, think again before you pull out your credit card.

By the way, I give the bad rating not because I spent money on the book. Fortunately I borrowed it after I got the software. Instead, I bought books by Martin Evening, Deke McClelland (the Bible) and Jack Davis (wow book). I am also waiting for the Real World PS CS2 coming out. I think all those are much better than this one.
