Believe it or not, Robert Ripley enjoyed being called a liar. "I don't blame anyone for thinking me one, because there's nothing stranger than the truth." And in this special edition of seemingly unbelievable stories, the king of oddities lives on with contemporary and classic lore. Ready for this? In New Mexico, when an election race is too close to call, the candidates play poker to determine the winner. This happened as recently as 1999. You'll also read about a real-life Tarzan--a boy who lived from age 2 to 6 with a family of monkeys; discover the bizarre coincidences that linked U.S. presidents Lincoln and Kennedy; and marvel at the flight attendant who survived being thrown 33,000 feet to the ground after the plane she was in exploded. Trivia hounds and curious readers of all ages will be mesmerized by this collection of more than 700 weird nuggets, organized under such chapter headings as "The Sporting Life," "Out of the Odd-inary," "Home, Hearth & Peculiar Places," and "Downright Spooky." Biographical information about the folksy Ripley is also included. (Ages 8 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Customer Reviews:
Come on, Ripley's; you can do better than this!.......2005-05-23
A long time reader and buyer of Ripley,in fact ever since his first book;but I must say I was not impressed with this effort.I got the impression it was just pumped out from a stack of old files and maybe items that didn't make the grade before.Ripley, himself, was what made Believe It or Not what it was.He was a bigger than life personality and today there is nobody taking his place at Ripley's.This book reminds me of the numerous others that did take-offs of Ripley, and never came close to the master.Maybe if the resources were spent on creating a world reknown traveller, explorer of the unbeaten track;who could put the imagination back into the cartoons ,rather than trying to get by on marketing and graphics;we would get the quality product that made Believe It or Not what it was. This book appears to be something cranked out with minimal effort and imagination for the kids market. When Ripley was around his cartoons had appeal for all ages.
I really believe a replacement for Ripley himself, who is a character himself, with widespread recognition, often appearing as a guest on talk shows,is what is needed to put new life and personality back into the cartoons.File, research, marketing, art and graphics departments just don't do the job.
The daily cartoons in some newspapers and on the web site drawn by a John Graziano are an attempt to produce the cartoons;but who is he? One never had to ask who Ripley was, every knew who he was and he was as recognizable as Babe Ruth or the President of the United States.A long time tradion of Ripley was to show the name and town of people who submitted items. It seems he was much more involved personally with his fans than the unrecognizable "staff" we have today.I believe Ripley would have considered it only a common courtesy to recognize his contributors.Any long time fan knows how much people, mail and fans meant to him.
See my other reviews on Believe It or Not books dated 13 Jan 2004 and 19 Jan 2005.
There are SO many strange things inside this book! .......2005-01-02
You got it folks. The RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT 2005 SPECIAL EDITION book. That's right. There's nothing stranger than the truth when you read this. It's all real. Just like any other "Ripley's" book, there are animals doing amazing things, people with nothing better to do then to decorate of their possessions in a wacky way, people doing things to themselves, and from everything from entertainment to fun to just plain weird, this is a wonderful piece of literature. Also visit the museums! They're not bad at all.
As good as the museum in Myrtle Beach.......2004-08-10
I LOVE THE MUSEUMS AND THE BOOK. I'M WAITING TO SEE IF THERE'LL BE A 2005 BOOK.MUCH OF THIS BOOK IS PRETTY CREEPY AND COOL AT THE SAME TIME.FOR SOME STUFF, I DON'T SEE HOW THEY COULD DO IT. I'VE ALSO HEARD THERE'S A MUSEUM IN TENNESSEE, TOO. IF YOU HAVEN'T BEEN TO ANY, GO TO ONE. YOU WILL, WITHOUT A DOUBT, BE AMAZED.
Review By X S C.......2004-01-21
I am a fifth grader from P.S. 42. Many people in our class have read Ripley's Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004. Some say this book is very cool and some say it is not. Well, I say its very interesting because of the pictures and the descriptions. Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004 tells the weird facts that all people are interested in reading. Someone fell 20-stories from Liberty Bank Building in Buffalo, New York and he survived! Most people would be flat from a 20-story fall but this guy didn't. Even people survived in extreme cold by burning their money! I think most boys in my class wanted to read it because of the pictures or because it's a new book. Is there somebody with a magnetic body? Or is there a reptile man? You'll know when you read "Ripley's Believe It or Not Special Edition 2004!" You'll be amazed by the stories they tell you!!
I really enjoyed this book for a few reasons. This book tells the truth. Most people always hide their ugly side. But in this book, a person with three legs tell other people he has three legs. Isn't he embarrassed? Well, maybe he is embarrassed. Probably not.
I think children below 6 shouldn't read this ( 7 and above could). When children under 6 read this book, they might get nightmares about the disgusting pictures in the book. If they really wanted to read this book, they could but if they read it and get nightmares, it's their fault.
In this book, there are too many facts so I'll just ask a few question: Did the man with a metal pole in his chest live after the pole went in? How about the dolphin who spoke? How did the camper know he had a snake in his body?
People in our class, mostly girls think that some of the pictures are disgusting. On page 29 of the book, there are skulls. Skulls are disgusting to look at. Also when you look at the skulls, it looks like its smiling at you. Anyway, I really liked this book and it should be for children who are disgusting. I have one of the Ripley's Believe It or Not books and their facts are really cool for boys. So go to a book store and see if you can get your hands on this fabulous book! But if you don't like this book, you could go to Amazon.com and tell them your opinion about the book.
The Amazing, Unbelievable Ripley's.......2002-05-14
Ripley's Believe It or Not is a great bok. It contains many interesting facts, which will leave you in shock and disbelief. I thought Ripley's Believe It or Not was awesome. I had a lot of fun reading the book and I learned many amazing facts. Based on the T.V hit show, Ripley's Believe It or Not is mind-boggeling. Many people think that it is the same as Guiness Book of Records, but it is not. Ripley's Believe It or Not tells you amazing facts and you decide whether it is true or not. None of the facts in Ripley's are in the Guiness Book of Records.

Book Description
In recent years, the earnings of young blacks have risen substantially relative to those of young whites, but their rates of joblessness have also risen to crisis levels. The papers in this volume, drawing on the results of a groundbreaking survey conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research, analyze the history, causes, and features of this crisis. The findings they report and conclusions they reach revise accepted explanations of black youth unemployment.
The contributors identify primary determinants on both the demand and supply sides of the market and provide new information on important aspects of the problem, such as drug use, crime, economic incentives, and attitudes among the unemployed. Their studies reveal that, contrary to popular assumptions, no single factor is the predominant cause of black youth employment problems. They show, among other significant factors, that where female employment is high, black youth employment is low; that even in areas where there are many jobs, black youths get relatively few of them; that the perceived risks and rewards of crime affect decisions to work or to engage in illegal activity; and that churchgoing and aspirations affect the success of black youths in finding employment.
Altogether, these papers illuminate a broad range of economic and social factors which must be understood by policymakers before the black youth employment crisis can be successfully addressed.

The Queen
ASIN: 0931340810 |
Book Description
Impeccably researched and written with a novelist's narrative mastery, this biography of the great conductor is a modern tragedy. Mitropoulos was a passionate advocate of difficult modern music and an early champion of Mahler; his emotionally charged performances brought the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra into the first rank of American orchestras. Generous and self-effacing, he was an innocent in the game of musical politics, unprepared for the intrigues and treachery in store when he became music director of the New York Philharmonic, "the orchestra that took no prisoners."
Customer Reviews:
A fine job.......2000-02-05
Mitropoulos's career, method of working, extraordinarymusicianship are described in detail. Also described is his sweetnessand naiveté. Aside from some special pleading when he bashes other conductors in defense of Mitropoulos, Trotter does a fine job of pulling together the research of Oliver Daniel who died before he could write the biography.
Wonderful biography of a forgotten giant.......1999-05-27
I stumbled on the name Dimitri Mitropoulos quite by accident, as one never hears him mentioned much in the same way Karajan, Bernstein, and others are. Neither have I heard any of his recordings. This book helped me delve into this great man's life - what a singular purpose of mind he had - total dedication to his craft. William Trotter succeeds in giving us not just the details of his life (which, by themselves, are not exactly mundane), but also in bringing the reader the imagery, the depth of feeling of Mitropoulos' work. One can feel and see him conducting in his full glory. Having had this marvellous biography brought to me, I am now eagerly buying whatever recordings conducted by Mitropoulos that I can find. I agree with the other reader who commented - a discography would be most welcome.
A superb biography of a great musician.......1997-11-06
At the time of Dimitri Mitropoulos' death in 1960, he was regarded as one of the greatest conductors of the century. His spellbinding performances in Minneapolis and with the New York Philharmonic were legendary. Then he handed (or was forced to hand over) the baton to Leonard Bernstein, Mitropoulos turned to opera. Virtually all of those performances are legendary. Even when let down by poor casts (such as a Met broadcast of DIE WALKURE) his conducting leaves the listener breathless. Yet the irony is that with a decade of his death, he was virtually forgotten. William Trotter's well-written, well-paced biography reminds us of Mitropoulos' great musicianship and encouraged me, for one, to pull the maestro's recordings off the shelf and become reacquainted. My only quibble is the lack of a discography. Maybe Amadeus will remedy that in future editions or maybe they'll give us a separate volume (as with their excellent Bjoerling discography). Highly recommended to all music lovers.

Book Description
In a series of stories drawn from his own experience coming of age during the 1950s, Richard B. Schwartz revisits his boyhood in southern Ohio. His memories of adolescence bring back the birth of rock and roll, the rigors and absurdities of religion and parochial schools, trials of little league baseball, grueling summer construction work and caddying jobs, the thin pleasures of 3.2% beer, drag racing lore, and, of course, the youthful discovery of sex.
By turns hilarious and poignant, satiric and nostalgic, the book focuses on a period and place through a perspective somehow both engaged and withdrawn-engaged through its feeling of innocent immediacy, and distanced because of the awareness developed in the intervening decades. If the memoir expresses a sense of loss at the passing of good times, it also exhibits a sense of relief at the end of those awkward years.
Richard B. Schwartz has written a book that will appeal to many readers, whatever their age, but perhaps especially to those who remember the fifties as they were and as they might have been, when we grew up yearning for slow dances and fast cars, and every little town seemed like the biggest city in America.
Book Description
"Rock 'n' roll was loud, brash, and impudent; TV was soothing and polite. Rock 'n' roll was sex; TV was violins. Rock 'n' roll was Elvis Presley; TV was Robert Young."
-- from Station to Station
Television and rock 'n' roll: a combative yet profitable marriage of convenience that shapes fashion, attitude, talk, and music itself. In Station to Station, the first book to fully chronicle the evolution of televised rock, renowned music journalist Marc Weingarten brings to life all the defining moments in its history, from Elvis and The Ed Sullivan Show to Madonna and MTV.
Covering six decades of culturally significant performances, personalities, and shows, and drawing on dozens of in-depth interviews with key players at every level, Weingarten reveals how rock on television synthesized the burgeoning youth culture and transformed the face of middle-class America. He explores American Bandstand's stranglehold on the pop-radio charts in the 1950's, the rise and demise of artists via Soul Train and Saturday Night Live, and the impact of radio programmer Bob Pittman's idea for an "all music video" channel. Whether discussing players (Dick Clark, Don Kirshner, Don Cornelius), prefab teen idols (Fabian, The Monkees, The Partridge Family), or showstoppers (The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Run-DMC) Station to Station is a thouroughly engaging and coprehensive look at the intersecting realms of popular culture's two most influential artforms.
Customer Reviews:
A Neutral Review.......2002-12-09
For a Gen-X (or younger) pop-culture fan, there is much that will be new and worth a perusal here. For instance: there is a good chapter on the mid-sixties equivalents of MTV, which were shows like Shindig, Hullabaloo, and Where the Action Is, and a chapter, also good, on the machinations behind the Beatles appearances on Ed Sullivan.
Weingarten is at times very good writer (or has a very good editor, although see my comments below about editorial fact checking)--take this passage, for example: "In 1969 singer Tom Jones was every mother's secret sex fantasy, a darkly handsome Welsh testosterone bomb who had a knack for squeezing every last ounce of raw emotion from a lyric until it grew knuckle hair" (I'll forgive the mixed metaphor of squeezing ounces out lyrics like juice from oranges and then having the lyrics grow knuckle hair).
On the down-side, a good bit of this book seems to be broad summaries of trends reported in other, more detailed treatements of the chapters' topics. At times, Weingarten's writing sounds like VH-1-styled pablum history, and at times its just lazy with the facts--for example: "The harmonic convergence between pop music and animation lasted until the mid-1970s, when bubblegum pop fizzled out and kids turned their attention to Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Asteroids" (Pac-Man? In the mid-1970s?), or "Weird Al Yankovic, an accordianist from Lynwood, California, who father was a polka star" (10 seconds on AllMusic.com would have revealed that Yankovic "was born October 23, 1959 in Lynwood, California. An only child, he began playing the accordion at age seven, following in the tradition of polka star Frank Yankovic (no relation)..." I don't really care about Weird Al and Frank, I just think one should do a little fact-checking before one sells a manuscript to Simon and Schuster.
My favorite story comes in the chapter on 1960s TV Rock Shows. It's the mid-sixties, and Shindig producer Jack Good is trying to persuade Col. Parker to let Elvis (who is rapidly becoming a joke due to his film career and the resultant schlocky soundtrack albums) appear on the show for a reasonable fee, and fellow producer (and former Eddie Cochran girlfriend) Sharon Sheeley reports that "Jack went into his spiel and told Parker, 'I'll make Elvis look better than he's ever looked in his career.' When he was done, Parker told him 'I don't care if you put him on his knees and make him sing "Mammy," I want a million dollars.' So Jack didn't get Elvis. It was Elvis's favorite show, though--we used to go to his house and watch it with him."
So, do check this book out of your library if you have a casual-to-semi-serious interest in pop-culture history and save your dollars for another work to add to your library. There's so many good books out there, and this one doesn't warrant revisiting over and over.
Wonderfull Perpective On History Of Rock 'n' Roll.......2001-07-05
The story of Rock and Roll is the story of Television, and the author knows it. He shows every major development in rock and roll through how it appeared on Television. It starts off in the most logical place, Elvis on Ed Sullivan, and ends with MTV. Any major development is in here. My personal favorite was the chapter titled, "Couch time with the Counterculture". This chapter had, Mamas and the Papas on Ed Sullivan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Mike Douglas, as well as The Smother's Brothers. It also covers the variety shows, Ricky Nelson, the Monkees, Schoolhouse Rock and the Partridge Family. I recomend this book to any fan of rock music, regardless of what decade interests you
The Secret is Released.......2001-03-24
Station to Station was incredible. Reading this book was like being back stage at a concert. The insight that Marc Weingarten has about the music industry is remarkable. This is a must read for everyone who is interested in the past, present, and future of Rock-n-Roll.
Weingarten is brilliant.......2000-12-01
I haven't cracked the cover yet, but he played in my band in the late-Seventies and he knows absolutely everything about music. I learned it all from him. He's brilliant. (His father paid me to write this stuff).

An Absolute Must-Read for AS/400 Programmers.......2006-02-22
I found this book to be very comprehensive, easy to read and understand, and very useful. I used it to replace reports that are generated by the iSeries with CSV files (Comma-Separated Value) that are transferred to our network where they can be opened with Excel. Once opened with Excel, they can be sorted any way the User wants, columns can be totaled on-the-fly, filters can be applied to the data, etc...
I also used the information in the book to link files on the iSeries to tables in MS Access. I was able to take a file on the iSeries and find duplicate records without writing a program. I was also able to take two files on the iSeries and find records in one file that were missing from the second file, again, without writing any programs. Likewise, I was able to find records that were in both files.
Talk about cool, you can even create data entry screens in Access that add/update data in the files on the iSeries. The screens in Access are GUI as opposed to the "Green Screens" on the iSeries.
I've only begun to scratch the surface of this book. I'm looking forward to trying out some of the other techniques that are layed out by Chris and Brian.
