5 out of 5 stars Superb Overview for both Novice Games, and Non-Gamer Sponsors of Games.......2007-02-26

This book is exactly what I hoped for when I ordered it from Amazon. In fact, it is much more. The first part, in three chapters, talks about new opportunities for game developers, defines serious games, and talks about design and development issues.

Then the book surprises. It has entire chapters on EACH of the following: Military Games, Government Games, Educational Games, Corporate Games, Healthcare Games, and a chapter on Political, Religious, and Art Games.

Following final thoughts, the book surprises again. The appendices are world-class. Appendix A is a tremendous listing of Conferences (13 in all), and Organizations (6), Contests (1, Hidden Agenda, $25K prize--we need MORE); web sites (6, less impressive than I hoped), and publications (5). Appendix B is a survey with results, and Appendix C is a very fine bibliography as well as a very helpful Glossary of terms in the field, and an index.

Ever since I saw the US Army sponsor the Serious Games summit, and then saw the emergent success of Games for Change, I realized that we were at the beginning of a major explosion of innovation that could change the world.

In my view, Serious Games need to become the new hub for life-long education, for inter-cultural understanding, and for simulating belief systems, including evil belief systems, at both the macro and micro neuroscience levels. The Earth Intelligence Network was just created this year in order to feed free real-world public intelligence to all Serious Gamers as well as to Transpartisan policy and budget developers.

In my humble opinion, Serious Games is the next big leap in the global Internet, especially when integrated with the Way of the Wiki such that open source software standards can allow games on every threat, every policy, every budget, every location, to interact and to empower the public with tools for sense-making and consensus-building that were once limited to a small elite.

This book was everything I hoped for, and much more. I am not now and never intend to be a game developer. I want to see Serious Games expand from isolated toy-like games that focus on one small issue in isolation, to a vibrant "Co-Evolution" Sphere that in an increasingly accurate representation of the Earth, past, present, and future. This book is my ground zero in observing this field, and I have very high hopes for the future of Serious Games.

4 out of 5 stars A good start but wants a bit more.........2006-07-23

The book provides a good overview but stays on a quite overall level without really getting deep into the important problems in the serious games space. It seems a bit US-centric. But definitely a good companion for anyone wanting to do serious games.

5 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for anyone interested in Serious Games.......2006-04-17

As a Serious Game Developer, I am keenly aware of the state of our industry, of our movement. We have in a few years achieved a meteoric rise in exposure and progress but this is not enough. There are a multitude of new ideas and projects that don't know what is out there, that don't know we are out there. There is much still to be learned and only by knowing what is out there here and now can new (and old) projects hope to succeed in this nascent field.

Enter this book.

David Michael (author of "indie game developers survival guide") and Sande Chen have provided an indispensable review of this area in their book "Serious Games: Games that Educate, Train, and Inform". Touching upon all the major areas, they provide a blanket survey of the past and present efforts in this arena, introducing us along the way to the people and the companies that are changing the landscape of video games into something that transcends entertainment. The reading is light and the pace is brisk. The content is clearly broken up so that a person can skip straight to their area of interest or read it front to back and take it all in. The coverage is complete and I feel that no area of the Serious Games space was missed.

I wish I would have had this book three years ago when I started my projects. I would have had a much better idea of where I'm coming from and where I'm going. I am thankful to David and Sande for putting this book together in hopes that future developers will not have to struggle as much as I have.

Book Description

Written by the first woman director of the Gillette Company, this is an exciting first-hand account of Gillette's successful fight against four hostile takeover efforts during the late 1980s. After a brief, insightful history of the company and the growth of its world-famous products--Gillette razors and blades; Braun coffee machines and electric razors; Oral-B toothbrushes; Paper Mate, Waterman, and Parker pens; and cosmetics--the author tells the inside story of Ronald Perelman's three attempts and the Coniston Partners' one attempt to take over Gillette. Ricardo-Campbell, who chaired Gillette's Finance Committee during this period, provides a fascinating look at the ensuing proxy battles and other intricate financial maneuvers. Combining academic theory and first-hand experience in its discussion of topics such as greenmail and poison pills, this work also features such world-renowned corporate figures as Warren Buffett, Joe Flom, and Eric Gleacher.

4 out of 5 stars worth reading.......2003-12-26

I believe Resisting Hostile Takeovers is worth reading though I don't completely agree with Ms.Ricardo-Campbell's writing style. This book discusses two events Gillette had experiened through 1986 and 1988: hostile hakeover attempt and proxy battle. The author, as economist, very concisely details the major issues arising in the takeover battle such as business decision rule, antigreenmail, proxy battle, anti-takeover legislation etc. Caution is required, however, since this book is written from a board member's viewpoint and there are relatively not much about how managements and other legal and financial advisors reacted to the threats.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent , detailed account.......1999-09-25

This excellent thesis has great credibility because it was written by someone who was actually in the game and not on the sidelines looking in. The detail is such that it could also serve as a text on the subject of takeovers. This book serves as a testament that even the some of the best managers(Gillette) should and will be constantly challenged ( if need be by outsiders like Perelman, etc) to increase shareholder value.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the outsider in.......1997-12-12

Well, perhaps not many students find takeover sories interesting. Perhaps,... But for an insight into real business problems, the Gillettte story is one of the very best. It shows that women may be better managers (even in a razor company), provides a fresh written perspective, and should be considered as a wounderful learing example for further geneations.

                Book Description

Multi-modal representations, the lack of complete and consistent domain theories, rapid evolution of domain knowledge, high dimensionality, and large amounts of missing information - these are challenges inherent in modern proteomics. As our understanding of protein structure and function becomes ever more complicated, we have reached a point where the actual management of data is a major stumbling block to the interpretation of results from proteomic platforms, to knowledge discovery. Knowledge Discovery in Proteomics presents timely, authoritative discussions on some of the key issues in high-throughput proteomics, exploring examples that represent some of the major challenges of knowledge discovery in the field. The authors focus on five specific domains: · Mass spectrometry-based protein analysis · Protein-protein interaction network analysis · Systematic high-throughput protein crystallization · Systematic, integrated analysis of multiple data repositories · Systems biology In each area, the authors describe the challenges created by the type of data produced and present potential solutions to the problem of data mining within the domain. They take a systems approach, covering individual data and integrating its computational aspects, from data preprocessing, storage, and access to analysis, visualization, and interpretation. With clear exposition, practical examples, and rich illustrations, this book presents an outstanding overview of this emerging field, and builds the background needed for the fruitful exchange of ideas between computational and biological scientists.

David Brendan Hopes, a literary scholar and painter based in North Carolina, does not value the natural world for its beauty, beautiful though it surely is. He prizes it instead, he writes in this engaging book of essays, "because it bears witness," because understanding its operating principles affords us humans something approaching wisdom.

Hopes writes of having learned a few hard lessons on his travels into the wild. One alternately humorous and sobering essay, for instance, describes his encounter on a mountain trail with a grumpy mother bear, who left him with an eight-inch-long laceration as a souvenir. ("She had meant nothing by it," Hopes writes, forgivingly. "She used my leg to steady herself as she would have the limb of a tree, and with the same consequence.") He also ponders the play of improbability and self-discovery that nature seems to delight in, writing of an encounter along the Gulf of Mexico with the exceedingly rare, possibly extinct Eskimo curlew, a bird that wasn't supposed to be there at that time of year. His sighting may have been mistaken, Hopes suggests. But, he writes, he may also have seen a ghost, a creature that had "pulled a vanishing act so complete and so subtle we cannot yet process the reality of it."

Quiet and humane, Hopes's essays speak to the pleasures and occasional pains of a life spent in nature, bearing witness along with the world. --Gregory McNamee

                Book Description

In this book, David Brendan Hopes fuses the spiritual and the mystical with the natural, invoking the possibility of grace. Writing about hiking, camping, and particularly about birds, he invites readers to mark the moment when flower, bird, and mountain announce themselves to the soul, bristling and wondrous.

                5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful.......2000-12-09

David Hopes, in this sensitive and breathtaking book, reaches the highest goal of any good writing--to touch the spirit and raise it up. These essays are about nature, yes, and about its beauty--but more than that: they are about the interfaces between the human world and the natural world. Or, more even than that, they are about how the human and natural world are one, fabric of the same universe. The nature that is our nature. And, it is this knowledge that has the power to save us. I urge you to read this book and treasure it-- for its beauty and its spiritual searching and its wisdom.

                5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking........1999-09-29

There are no words to express the magnificence of Mr. Hopes' prose. I came upon a copy accidently and have read and enjoyed it more than any other book in my vast library. This is a book that truly should be re-issued. David Brendan Hopes is a literary gift to be treasured.

                  Book Description

Given the widespread interest in macroscopic phenomena in liquid crystals, stemming from their applications in displays and devices. The need has arisen for a rigorous yet accessible text suitable for graduate students, whatever their scientific background. This book satisfies that need. The approach taken in this text, is to introduce the basic continuum theory for nematic liquid crystals in equilibria, then it proceeds to simple application of this theory- in particular, there is a discussion of electrical and magnetic field effects which give rise to Freedericksz transitions, which are important in devices. This is followed by an account of dynamic theory and elementary viscometry of nemantics Discussions of backflow and flow-induced instabilities are also included. Smetic theory is also briefly introduced and summarised with some examples of equilibrium solutions as well as those with dynamic effects. A number of mathematical techniques, such as Cartesian tensors and some variational calculus, are presented in the appendices.

                  Book Description

Not since Moby-Dick...No, not since Treasure Island...Actually, not since Jonah and the Whale has there been a sea saga to rival The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists, featuring the greatest sea-faring hero of all time, the immortal Pirate Captain, who, although he lives for months at a time at sea, somehow manages to keep his beard silky and in good condition.

Worried that his pirates are growing bored with a life of winking at pretty native ladies and trying to stick enough jellyfish together to make a bouncy castle, the Pirate Captain decides it's high time to spearhead an adventure.

While searching for some major pirate booty, he mistakenly attacks the young Charles Darwin's Beagle and then leads his ragtag crew from the exotic Galapagos Islands to the fog-filled streets of Victorian London. There they encounter grisly murder, vanishing ladies, radioactive elephants, and the Holy Ghost himself. And that's not even the half of it.

Belay your search for a salty tale and batten on to this slender tome! Creationists may want to avoid this book, as Charles Darwin is a central character. The Pirate Captain takes his descriptively named crew on a rousing adventure around the world and back to London, employing clever disguises and foiling the dastardly plans of the Bishop along the way. Black Bellamy confounds the Pirate Captain yet again, but as usual the dashing Pirate Captain has the word. Written in the best homage to Gilbert & Sullivan's "The Pirates of Penzance", this series continues to delight and titillate the salty senses of the sea-faring soul. Practice reading in an authentic pirate voice, and have some cured ham handy for snacking.

If you love Monty Python - you'll love the Pirates! series. Get ready to howl with laughter - you won't be disappointed (Though, if this is your first, I'd start with An Adventure with Ahab - still - you'll be entertained either way)

This is one of the few books that I finished really fast. It may be because it is a relatively short novel, but it is also because it is never boring and it makes you want to read more. It makes you really hungry for an actual adventure! Well, at least that's how I felt as I was reading. It was easy to understand as it will not require much thinking for other possible meanings of the text, and usually I don't like that (because I like texts that have a lot of metaphors), but here I just have to love the text for providing me with pure entertainment during my free time.

Of course, I have other good reasons for liking The Pirates this much. Not only is it very funny, it is also intellectual. The author provides information on things that readers would probably be interested in, like why our fingers wrinkle every time we stay in the bath too long, and it was really clever of him to do so. The characters of this book have some personality that would make you like them a lot, especially the Pirate Captain. I also like his favorite comrade, the pirate with a scarf. It was also enjoybale to have Charles Darwin, Robert Fitzroy, and the Bishop of Oxford as characters, because in this novel I saw them in another light; the not so serious kind of light... and it was really entertaining because in textbooks all there is to them are their importance to science and religion. At least here, even if it's fiction, you would get to see that maybe after all they had a comedic side.

And of course, it was always easy to picture the scenarios playing in your head. Along with it, you'll smile and laugh for sure!

I would have to praise the author, Mr. Defoe for having a really imaginative mind. I'm sure, if Charles Darwin and Robert Fitzroy were alive now, they would have liked this really nice novel as much as I did.

Surreal and hilarious. I'm a fan of Monty Python and other such UK silliness and this is right up there. Highly recommended!
