I can't express how important this book has been in our family. I still return to it every now and then - it's great to re-group and re-learn its lessons. This book gave my husband and I the power to deal with our strong-willed child, and even our more compliant child - together, consistently, fairly, and sanely.
Better books out there.......2007-09-13
This book is based on the ideas in Positive Discipline. There is practically nothing new, except the idea that a spirited child will test your limits again and again, so you have to be even more consistent. There! Now that you know that, just get the Positive Discipline, which is excellent. It describes the background of the method, specific approaches, gives you ideas for all ages. "Setting Limits", btw, is much harder to adapt to a toddler. The writing is leaves something to be desired as well.

Dr. MacKenzie is a God-send! The techniques in this book are helping to complete transform my relationship with my strong-willed 7 year old (who also has ADHD!). After all the years of being worn down by power struggles and tantrums, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my back. This book is well-written, a quick read, and TOTALLY PRACTICAL. If you have a challenging strong-willed child, there is no other book or advice that will help you more. You will QUICKLY begin to have a calm, cooperative, tension-free home!!

I found this book to be disappointing - it didn't live up to the hype of the other three reviews. The chapters about summer camps, the Hockaday private school, sororities, and Junior League were interesting but the rest was disappointing. I guess maybe you need to be from Texas to appreciate the rest, but as a northerner I was looking for more along the lines of the four chapters I mentioned above.
Just as I Imagined.......2000-05-14
Picking up this book was a trip into my Texas past. A glimpse of a rariified style of life that I pined for as a girl growing up in Grand Prairie....I don't think we had a Junior League. "Just As We Were" actually proves again, that no matter the side of the tracks you came from, Texas women are a singular breed, smart, strong, and comitted.

Prudence has an unofficial fan club in El Paso, Texas. It started with her first book, Thundering Sneakers, and when the second one came out, Retreads, we were all thrilled. Now, with this treasure, Just as We Were, well, it's just too much! Prudence writes with such wit and wisdom about the things many women do in their lives. I never realized how funny some of the stuff is that we do until I read about it from her view point. The Junior League stories are enough to make your sides split, I actually read parts of it at our own Junior League meeting one time! Don't get me wrong, you DO NOT have to be a member of the Junior League or anything else to enjoy this book. She writes about things from two sides and it is a great experience. Sad things, like aging parents and the painful parts of child rearing can be funny and ultimatly less painful from Prudence' perspective. I highly recommend this book!

Junior Leaguers finally have a voice!!! Prudence Mackintosh
has captured a part Texas womanhood in a series of
hilarious essays just published in book form. I laughed
hard but wait, this is more than just personal and funny
stories. Mackintosh acts like a social anthropologist,
commenting upon all the things that make Texas women's lives
unique.So if you want a delightful read and if you want to
understand Texas (or Southern) women, read this book.
Actually, if you want to understand women at all read this
book because she really touches on issues like growing up,
children, college, domestic help, and aging parents which
are experiences most middle class women have had.

This is a good book and gets the points across very well. The content is very good however the cost of the book doesn't seem right. If this book was cheaper i would have given it 4 stars...so if you can get it cheaper used then do that. Its a good book with great content and covers the material well. If you have to buy it..then BUY IT USED

Completely abstract without concrete examples. Full of verbiage. Impossible to grasp.
I hated this book from day 1 and it was a waste of time. I wouldn't even know what to suggest for alternatives.

Have you ever asked your geek buddy to explain to you how to do a maths problem and then he spent more than 3 hours to tell you the history of modern mathematic theories, how the heck did they discover the pi number? What are the properties of a circle?
If your answer is yes, then that's exactly what I felt after reading this book. I was shocked at how much time did I waste on all of the irrelevant information in this book. The ironic thing is as a college student, I came into this Database Management class hoping to learn something "real". What I found were a bunch of theories and introductions that I already forget while writing this review. And, no I still have the remotest idea of how to create a database in MS Access as well as Oracle. I really like my teacher; but I think I would have been better off reading a "How to do stuff with MS Access" textbook
Awesome book -- Great information.......2006-07-14
This being my first book about databases, I find that it explains the topic at hand very well, and concisely. While database design can be daunting of a task, the book guides the reader through it step by step, explaining exactly why something is like it is. The first chapters discuss the different models that were in use and what is becoming mainstream right now. Very easy to read, but some technological insight is suggested when starting this.
