Joe Leaphorn, former Navajo tribal police lieutenant, is not a happy retiree. So when his successor asks him to look into how a young Hopi named Billy Tuve came by a valuable diamond the boy tried to pawn for a fraction of its worth, Joe finds himself involved in a five decade old mystery. It dates back to a plane crash in the Grand Canyon, one that took the life of a man whose putative daughter also has an interest in the diamond; it could lead her to her father's remains, from which she hopes to extract enough DNA to establish her birthright. For good measure, Hillerman adds a couple of villains determined to beat her to the site of the crash, a cache of other diamonds long since given up for lost in the Canyon's watery depths, and a Hopi ritual that's kept the site secret for years. It's a good yarn, well but twice told; Hillerman sets it up in a chronologically confusing opening chapter, in which Joe spins the story for a couple of former law-enforcement colleagues--not just to entertain or enlighten them but to demonstrate what he calls his "Navajo belief in universal connections. The cause leads to inevitable effect. The entire cosmos being an infinitely complicated machine all working together."
Hillerman is a name-brand writer with a huge and well deserved following. His evocation of the landscape of the Southwest is as compelling as it ever was, and many familiar characters from the other 18 novels in this prize-winning series appear here, notably Sergeant Jim Chee and border patrol officer Bernie Manuelito, the woman Chee hopes to marry. Joe Leaphorn remains his most fully-realized protagonist; his perspective on life, destiny, and the sometimes uneasy truce between Native Americans and whites gives this series a unique place in the genre. But as evidenced by his latest, Hillerman's hero needs more than a retired duffer's memories to keep him vital and alive, even for his most dedicated fans. --Jane Adams

Joe Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. A simple-minded kid nailed for the crime is the cousin of an old colleague of Sergeant Jim Chee who, with his fianceé, decides to help.

Hailed as ""a wonderful storyteller"" by the New York Times, and a ""national and literary cultural sensation"" by the Los Angeles Times, bestselling author Tony Hillerman is back with another blockbuster novel featuring the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Sergeant Jim Chee.
Former Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. A simple-minded kid nailed for the crime is the cousin of an old colleague of Sergeant Jim Chee. He needs help and Chee, and his fiancée Bernie Manuelito, decide to provide it.
Proving the kid's innocence requires finding the remains of one of 172 people whose bodies were scattered among the cliffs of the Grand Canyon in an epic airline disaster 50 years in the past. That passenger had handcuffed to his wrist an attaché case filled with a fortune in -- one of which seems to have turned up in the robbery.
But with Hillerman, it can't be that simple. The daughter of the long-dead diamond dealer is also seeking his body. So is a most unpleasant fellow willing to kill to make sure she doesn't succeed. These two tense tales collide deep in the canyon at the place where an old man died trying to build a cult reviving reverence for the Hopi guardian of the Underworld. It's a race to the finish in a thunderous monsoon storm to see who will survive, who will be brought to justice, and who will finally unearth the Skeleton Man. "
Customer Reviews:
A disapointing book.......2007-06-25
I've read all the previous Chee-Leaphorn books and I've thoroughly enjoyed them. Up until now. Hillerman's previous books were sometimes a bit clumsy but the story and Navajo culture kept me involved. This time, the story simply became too tedious and the errors in the text became too irritating. A little over halfway through this book, I stopped reading it and I never returned.
Not since reading "Finding Moon" by Hillerman have I been so disappointed. In "Finding Moon", it appeared Hillerman lost interest in the story and ended the book abruptly. In "Skeleton Man", Hillerman began the book with a confusing first chapter and continued to confuse. For instance, the character Tuve said he traded a military entrenching tool (a type of shovel) for his diamond and, in the story told by the old storekeeper, the cowboy traded a knife. Later in the book, however, Tuve was referred to as trading a "fancy jackknife" for the diamond. I think Hillerman confused himself. Also, the basis of the book seems to be flawed--I, like a previous reviewer, thought DNA could be traced through generations rather than just from parent to child. And, worst of all for me as a Hillerman fan, the Chee and Leaphorn characters simply bored me to tears in this book.
As stated, I did not finish the book. At some point I decided my time was worth more than "Skeleton Man" had to offer. Very disappointing.
A Grand Escape.......2007-05-17
We all pass around the Hillerman mysteries in my family. I read this one the other day--and I couldn't put it down, as usual. Having just driven through the Southwest, I found myself absorbed by his descriptions of the Grand Canyon's geology, plants and animals, as well as his insight into the Navajo and Hopi philosophies. I agree with some of the critics, however, that the repetition of some of the diamond storyline was overkill, and that it was surprising that the heiress would get away with attempted murder after he had portrayed her as unhinged. A thought just occurred to me: While Hillerman explains much about the sacred, secret journey one of the Hopi protagonists takes down into the Grand Canyon, there's little exploration of the meaning of bones and DNA in the American Indian mindset. That could have been an interesting discussion for the book, too.
In the end, it was gripping and satisfying diversion, as always. And I'm glad Chee's getting hitched. It's about time.
Western lore 10, suspense 5. mystery 0.......2007-03-06
As always, I did enjoy reading this Hillerman, but it was disappointing in several respects:
1. Length. When you have to print the book in Bookman Old Style to make it adequately bulky for the newsstand, it's a novella, not a novel.
2. Mystery. None. Back in the day, there was always a mystery to be solved. Sometimes it was somewhat baffling, sometimes quite transparent, but there was always something. No mystery at all in this book.
3. Suspense. Not up to Hillerman's usual chilling standard.
4. Characters. Not enough Joe Leaphorn. Cardboard villain. Female semi-villain a nut case and allowed to skate on a major misdeed. A little too much pre-wedding rumination by Bernie Manuelito. But Jim Chee and Cowboy Dashee were excellent as usual.
5. Plot. Somewhat contrived and, as another reviewer has pointed out, also a bit repetitive because of having to keep all the players up to date on the state of play. Some clues are laid out but never lead anywhere, not even to dead ends. But:
6. Indian and Western lore and Grand Canyon geology and geography. Superb, as always, and worth the read for that alone.
Summary: Tony, as a huge fan, can we please, please go back to the Good Old Days and have a mystery worthy of the Grand Master you are? Thanks, Dave
Skeleton Man.......2007-01-10
Love anything by Tony Hillerman. Great suspense, great character development; great action, obvious respect and love for the Hopi and Navajo peoples. Collecting these as well.
Jim Chee and Bernie Manuelito marry, among other things.......2006-12-17
Joe Leaphorn believes in universal connections. He also seeks to restore harmony to his existence as a retired man. He is pleased to be called by his successor in the police force to help solve a mystery. It seems he knew the owner of a trading post who, suffering burglary of his establishment, added to his insurance claim the loss of a diamond. The question is, was there really a diamond, and where had the man obtained such a stone?
In 1956 planes crashed above the Grand Canyon. It was a disaster of considerable dimension. John Clarke, carrying diamonds for the family business, was one of the deaths. His posthumous child, Joanna Craig, seeks to establish through DNA testing her relationship to him. Bradford Chandler, a skip tracer, has been hired to oppose the claim of Joanna Craig and to find the diamonds and the bones of Clarke.
Jim Chee, Bernie Manuelito and Cowboy Dashee want to discover the truth of the matter on behalf of Dashee's cousin, Billy Tuve, who is being held for his alleged involvement in a robbery-murder of a jewelry store. His involvement is posited on his possession of a diamond. Both the diamond of the trading post owner and that of Billy Tuve seem to orginate from the same place and may be two of those held by John Clarke, passenger of one of the airliners in the 1956 crash.
The story shows considerable ingenuity in the weaving of the Indian lore into the plot amidst the brilliant collection of characters the author has developed for his books about the Navajo Police Force.

Sammy Keyes and the Skeleton Man.......2006-04-05
In this exotic story a girl named Sammy Keyes and her friends must solve the mystery of who tried to kill Chauncy LeBard and who stole his 500,000 dollar books!!!!!! Along the way Sammy pulls a prank on her worst enemy Heather Acosta. With the help of Officer Borsch and "Muscles", Sammy finds out who the almost - murderer is!!!!!!!! But if I told you who, it wouldn't be much of a mystery, now would it ???????
Sammy soon discovers that revenge isn't always so sweet, for once she pulls her prank on Heather she ends up with 20 hours of detention!!!!!!! In this particular book it's rather hard to spot the themes and messages, but sometimes that's what makes a mystery so well, mysterious!!! You may think that this book is scary because there is an attempted murder but it's not, it's an awesome book with a couple of funny bits here and there.
This book is an exciting mystery that will take you into it's pages so your standing right there next to Sammy as she unravels the mystery just like a mini Nancy Drew. So since this is such a good book I recommend it to you immensely. Put it on your "Books to read" list or something. I'm serious, read it.
PLEASE??????
Sammy Keyes.......2006-03-22

Sammy and a skeleton man.......2004-01-08
I read a pretty cool book called Sammy Keys and the Skeleton Man. The book is about a girl who finds out that a guy dressed up like a skeleton stole stuff from a person named Mr. Frankenstein. The reason why they call him Mr. Frankenstin is because he where's a mask that helps him breath. The skeleton man who stole from his house then sold it to the market. She tries to stop the skeleton man from doing it again, so when she finds out where the skeleton man stole, she goes to his house and talks to Mr. Frankenstein and sees if he remembers anything that happened. When she talks to him he barley remembers anything so she tries to trace the clues to see who did it. It brings her to a store when she finds who did it. She gets him trapped then calls the police. Then the skeleton man goes to jail, and then Mr. Frankenstein gets his stuff back and everything is over.
I think the book's message is when you're trying to look for something and you cant find it you should always try to find clues. I also think that when you're about to give up, don't, because there will be always another way to solve it. Sometimes it will be good to ask someone for advice to help you in some ways. The last thing is you should never steal from anyone or a friend you know might tell on you.
I recommend this book to you because it's a pretty cool book. You will always want to see what happens next. I liked it because it was always brings a questions to the book. I also liked how they always add clues to the book and how they put more characters in the book that's why I like this book.
She wasn't tring to get in trouble!.......2002-11-09
7th grader Sammy Keys has got a lot of troubles on her hands. It all started on Halloween at the bush house with her friends. At the bush house no one answered and Sammy saw a fire. After Sammy put it out with a sweater they found Chancey Lebard (the owner of the house, who they call the bush man)tied to a chair. It turns out he was robbed, and sammy was interested an started investigating. The sweater she put the fire out withturned out to be [expensive]. If it got all burn't up, she'd be in trouble.
those are not the only problems Sammy beholds. Her worst enemy Heather wasmaking a fool of her but every one thinks it is really Sammy. as far as Sammy is concerend it is payback time for Heather.
I like every thing about this book. I really like howit has a lot of problems at one time, it makes it more interesting. It also usesgood detail and description. Sammy Keys and the Skeleton Man is full of suspenceand i couldn't put it down. I can't think of anything ididn't like about this book except it had to end.
Sammy Keyes, A Winner!.......2002-10-22
Sammy doesn't look for trouble, but it usually finds her. In this case, it's on Halloween, when she gets run over by a skeleton with a bag of stolen goodies, who sets a fire in a spooky house. And that's just the beginning. Sammy is right-on, as are her friends, Marissa and Dot. But she doesn't sound nearly as convincing with her adult voices, especially Grams, who sounds like she's 30, rather than 55-plus. Overall, a good mystery, in a great series. This book is Awsome!
Book Description
In the minds of most people, the home has stood apart from the world of work. Bringing the factory or office into the home challenges this division. From the 1870s, when New York cigarmakers attempted to end tenement competition, to New Deal prohibitions in the 1930s, gender ideologies shaped the battle over homework. But by the 1980s, the middle-class mother at the keyboard replaced the victimized immigrant as the symbol of homework. Home to Work restores the voices of homeworking women to the century-long debate over their labor. The book also provides a historical context to the Reaganite lifting of New Deal bans. Where once men's right to contract precluded regulation, now women's right to employment undermined prohibition. Whether empowerment comes from rights to homework or rights as workers depends on whether homeworkers become visible as workers who happen to mother.

Must read for all Americans.......2005-04-01
This is an important book as it graphically points out the inadequacy of our preparations for a WMD attack on our soil. The second half of the book lists in detail how civilian households can protect themselves from such a catastrophe, filling a void left by the government's failure to provide such info. The first half is an exciting scenario which dramatically depicts what realistically could well occur if our homeland security at all levels is not soon enlightened to the facts of the threat faced by our nation. It provides a needed wake-up call to the citizens as to the true state of our unpreparedness for such an emergency. This book serves as a vital reference to keep readily at hand.

A fascinating read and a very important book for government officials, military leaders, medical personnel, law enforcement officials, and the general public. While a frightening and spell-binding page-turner, it is very much a current events story, combined with a reference for preparation, defense, and treatment of illness and injury related to WMD attacks. It is a call to our nation's leaders to prepare to protect the USA and our people from possible WMD events."

Possible scenariio with defenses.......2007-08-29
The author has studied the issue for many years. He writes this in fiction, but with the fact in mind IT CAN HAPPEN.
He then tells of survival measures and methods
WMD hits the Mark.......2006-10-18
I have read WMD Attacks on America. The author writes from a deep background of knowledge and he uses a solid story line to communicate the problems and self help that everyday Americans can put to good use.A needed book to the average American. And I might add, a good read.
The terror situation we face.......2005-11-30
With the terrorist situation we face today this book is a must read. Not only is the story an exciting and revealing one, but the self-help section is invaluable. What would you do if a chemical, biological or even nuclear event occurred in your city, community, or even in your neighborhood? How would you protect your loved ones? One of the first things you will need is good information; and if you were lucky enough to have read this book before any WMD catastrophe you will have what you need, and you will know what to do!

Self Help or How To Sell Music?.......2007-05-03
This book assumes one knows a lot and nothing at the same time. It assumes one knows how to write and compose music but has no idea about recording it or what an mp3 file is. If that's the case, get a book on recording. This book tries to cover everything. I was expecting a section on how to caulk the kitchen sink. I was quickly set back by all the self help direction in this book as well... talk of keeping one's work area clean and that one needs to have guts and discipline to do this business. This is not bad stuff, but way off topic. I'll get The Art of Happiness by the Dalai Lama for that. Respectfully, I want to know how to sell my music. I want to know who to contact, how publishing works, do's and dont's about the industry, how I might approach music supervisors and so on. This book covers these things but there is SO MUCH fluff to read through, I find myself skimming to get to the point. It has some valuable stuff for sure, but I wish there was a way to sift this thing out... it could easily lose 100 pages and still hold all the content directly related to SELLING ONES ORIGINAL MUSIC. I got more out of Richard Jay's book "How To Get Your Music in Film & TV"... 86 pages.
Not trying to be negative, just trying to shed some light on this book versus others. Get it I suppose, but get ready practice patience. Maybe this book is actually a lesson in tolerance. ;-)

It's probably illegal how much i love this book..........2006-01-23
"Cash Tracks..." in an indepensable guide about how to get on with the business side of being creative within the music scoring world (a side which is sorely overlooked).
It presents no end of ideas, tried and tested successfully, which can imrove your music business strategy and start you making MONEY from music. Please don't be put off by the "life is great!!!" american-ness of it all, this guy-heck, this book-is a full on money making machine. Practical, down-to-earth.
Invaluable.
Notice from the Publisher!.......2005-12-15
Just letting you know that all reviews posted before October 10, 2005 refer to a previous (now out of print) edition of this title. The new edition is completely new and updated!
Disappointing and generic.......2003-02-27
I'm pretty disappointed with this book.
It is a very good practical approach to business and marketing, but you could easily replace every instance of "music" or "jingle" with "widget," and have essentially the same book!
The author makes the assumption that every musician who can compose music already knows the construction of a jingle. He assumes that we all write jingles, we just need to know how to sell them. He in no way addresses the format, form, or content of advertising jingles.
These were the reasons I purchased this book, so I ended up getting nothing but a meandering discussion of how to promote myself.
Excellent value, well worth the money.......1999-06-21
A great introduction and simple step by step guide to working the music production business. Good solid guidelines applicable to even international readers. I have applied these techniques in New Zealand and they work very well over here! Some real gold in the setting your fee chapter. Also the focus on marketing throughout keeps you focussed on the job of selling. I highly urge anybody who is looking for an overall guide to music production business to get this book.

Book Description
This innovative book looks at representations of ethnic and racial identities in relation to the development of urban culture in postindustrialised American cities. The concept of "urban space" organizes a series of themes that structure chapters on white paranoia and urban decline; memories of urban passage; the racialized underclass; urban crime and justice; and globalisation and citizenship. The book focuses on a range of literary and visual forms including novels, journalism, films (narrative and documentary), and photography to examine the relationship between race and representation in the production of urban space. Texts analyzed include writings by Tom Wolfe (The Bonfire of the Vanities), Toni Morrison (Jazz), John Edgar Wildeman (Philadelphia Fire), and Walter Mosely (Devil in a Blue Dress). Films covered include Falling Down, Strange Days, Hoop Dreams and Clockers. Provocative and absorbing, this interdisciplinary treatment of urban representations engages contemporary theoretical and sociological debates about race and the city.

Dr. Who: The Handbook is back again, and its about time........2002-08-06
The second Doctor handbook is invaluable to Dr. Who fans. It continues with the way the other volumes in the Dr. Who handbooks have always been. But this one is ever more so different than the others. It's production details of how the second Doctor was concieved is very interesting, because such a thing had never been done before on changing the lead actor in a TV series with a completely different actor, but yet as the same character (with a new persona than the previous Doctor), was completely unheard of. A huge risk at the time for the BBC, unsure if the regular viewers of the show would accept this change. Reading about this is very unique to know. The usual handbook format is here, and this book's story production focus is on the sixth season story "The Mind Robber" (1968).
The one aspect that is very much priceless is the episode story summaries. These are very good, as I could almost imagine that they were on TV again. Also, the fact that almost all of the Patrick Troughton era of Dr. Who episodes was virtually wiped out from the BBC archives, makes these story summaries ever more so good to read about.
Another great book in the Dr. Who handbook series. The author trio of David J. Howe, Mark Stammers, and Stephen James Walker continue with their reputation as the definitive research team on Doctor Who's history. This was the sixth volume in the series, published in 1997.
Another good effort.......1998-07-19
These authors are well-established as the premier non-fiction authors of "Doctor Who". Here, we are presented with another familiar book in a familiar format, which works without being outstanding.
Howe/Stammers/Walker continue excellence in series.......1998-07-05
The pentultimate volume in the Doctor Who Handbook series contains exhaustive detail about all of the adventures of the Doctor as portrayed by Patrick Troughton. Since so many of this era's episodes are lost, the detailed summaries are invaluable to modern day lovers of sixties' Doctor Who. As with previous Handbooks behind the scenes and production information is presented along with the often diverse opinions of the three authors on each of the stories as televised.

Right on the money!.......2003-06-11
Unlike alot of other books out there, the title of this book is right on the money when it comes to the content of the book. This book IS an essential guide to wireless communications. Like many other people out there, I often read the online articles and technical editorials of Mr. Dornan (do a web search, they are great reading too!). So I thought I could not go wrong with his book. I was right. Starting with a bit of a history lesson, the author takes you through current 2/2.5G cellular and then hits the ground running. He doesn't stop until he has covered 3G, wireless LANs, messaging, WAP, wireless e-commerce, security, fixed wireless (WLL) and satellite technology. Mr. Dornan has a great writing style and throughly knows his material. So, no matter what your knowledge level, the read always has a light and easy feel to it and is still able to communicate a ton of relivant information to you. If you need a good starting place on wireless communications or a refresher course, you won't find too many books better than this one.
Educational explanation of wireless.......2002-12-24
I really got tired of not understanding wireless tech talk: G3 networks etc. I also wanted to understand why my cell phone kept fading in and out and dropping calls as I drove certain routes. So I bought this book and read it. The book does a good job of explaining in easy to understand terms the technology. The big revelation or understanding point to me was that EVERYTHING wireless is analogous to the radio, with broadcast points (cell towers) and receivers (cell phones). The difference is one of frequency. I finally got the analog vs. digital concept that eluded me for so long for some reason. While attempting to do justice to all major wireless regions of the world, US, Asia (Japan) and Europe I found the British author biased to his home turf. Which is expected and fine but I wanted something slightly more balanced. Towards the end I became a very selective skimmer and did not really finish the book, but I got out of it what I wanted.
Excellent introduction to wireless.......2002-08-17
If you are a marketing, business development, sales, or finance professional transitioning to the wireless field, this is the book for you. Mr. Dornan covers the topics in sufficient depth to make you knowledgeable without burying you in technical detail and equations. I've bought many books about technology and most are too technical so I lose interest. I am nearly finished with this book and it has be very valuable in the work I do. I would recommend it very highly.
As a Wireless Guru, this book is one of the best.......2002-06-27
I started reading it on Saturday and couldn't put it down, I was done by Tuesday. Sure the book has some spelling and gramatical errors (My Theory is that the editiors were put to sleep by it) but it talks about everything from the phones themselves, to wireless infrasturcuture, the building of a cell site, and commerence on Mobile Phones. It is really great for any techie that wants to know about phones, and even some who don't consider themselves techies. I enjoyed it quite a bit A+!
Health fears explained and exposed.......2002-05-16
This is a good book. It's the only book about wireless technology I've seen that actually takes the health effects of cellphones seriously. In addition to how mobile technology works and what it can do, the author devotes an entire chapter to the health problems, and comes down firmly "on the fence". He definitely thinks there's something to the fears (even though he's enthusiastic about the technology, as is clear from the rest of the book) and I agree with him.

Wireless applications may (or may not) be the next big thing in communications. The Essential Guide to Wireless Communications Applications surveys the universe of wireless telephony and data-communications technologies with an eye to mobile commerce and information services. For the most part, this guide isn't well suited to engineers or technicians, but rather to managers, salespeople, corporate decision-makers, and investors, who need the big picture without too many details. When they finish this book, readers will understand competing wireless telephony technologies, as well as the latest developments in short-range wireless networking (Bluetooth especially) and the promise of satellite-based global-roaming services. As the title implies, the book also emphasizes ways of putting telecommunications to work--distributing information and bringing in revenue.
You can read this book straight through if you like, but many readers probably will prefer to use it as a sort of encyclopedia. You can locate the section that interests you, and absorb its essentials (mostly in the text format) in a short time. As with a traditional encyclopedia, you can expect to back up your research with further reading on the Web and in more focused publications. --David Wall

Customer Reviews:
excellent book for the staff!.......2002-09-25
This book gives an excellent, clear picture of the state of things. I work for a small agresive company in the Telecommunications field and I give copies to the sales staff so they know what we are selling and also to development staff so they have some context of what they are trying to build. If you are at all interested in this area and don't have any knowledge of the area, START HERE!
An excellent introduction into wireless world.......2001-07-08
Mr. Dornan explains in a very easy -to-understand way all the wireless technologies. This is an excellent introduction book and, at the same time, a complete reference guide.
Clear and Useful Introduction to Wireless.......2001-06-13
This book is a clear and useful, very useful, introduction to the wireless space. I found that this book introduced me to technical terms, standards, and business concepts I had sometimes heard about before, but the author lays out the details in a very clear and detailed manner. For example, this book helped me to understand 3G much better. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a much better overview of the wireless space.
Insightful and balanced perspectives on wireless technology.......2001-05-23
The writing of such a book inevitably involves balancing between the amount of detail provided and the level of accessibility for the average layman; in my opinion, the author manages this remarkably well. Almost everything that spans the gamut of wireless technology is covered, apart from technically involved topics, yet the conciseness of the text allows the reader to have a good grasp of the relevant issues within a short time. What makes this book stand out though is the refreshing insight into various aspects of the technology offered by the author; the preface says that "it is designed to look beyond the hype", and from what is written you can tell that the author knows what he is talking about.
I will definitely be looking out for a second edition and other works by Andy Dornan.
Wireless is the way.......2001-03-26
Soon we will be able to access our email from our cell phones and surf the Net from your watch. The Europeans and Japanese already can. America is catching up. But do we really want the phone company to know where we are all the time?
