Book Description
There is nothing quite like the look and feel of embellished books. Unique, tactile and so very pleasing to the eye. Over-the-top embellishment combined with the look of a journal that has been lovingly used for at least a century. Not only does this book have a magnetic wrap but added is a classic red ribbon marker and a memento pouch to store the treasures of a life well lived.
Customer Reviews:
A treasure.......2007-08-23
This is absolutely gorgeous! And it was made without killing a cow, which is a bonus for me. It's the sort of journal that inspires you to write about magical things. And that pocket in the back is great for holding mementos from your adventures... even if the only trips you've been taking are through your mind.
I really enjoy writing in this journal.......2007-06-08
It holds the ink really well, and I like the magnetic flap that holds all my thoughts securely inside the hard covers. I have had journals in the past but not as good as this one. If you like to write like I do: poetry, short stories, or you just want to jot down your thoughts; you will enjoy writing them down in this. It has an old antique feel to it with the design covers and the crisp, smooth, ivory white pages are guaranteed to hold any ink that suites you. You will enjoy it as much as I do.
Journaling.......2007-05-12
I love it. Very classy looking, wish it cam in a bigger size but realy no complaints. Good size for your purse, to journal when waiting to get in somewhere.
Absolutely beautiful!.......2007-05-05
I was not in the least disappointed in the quality of this journal. It may not be real leather but you certainly couldn't tell by just looking at it. Heavy in the hand and the quality of the paper is perfect! This was purchased as a Christmas gift for our soon to be daughter-in-law, she loves it and uses it often.
Very pretty! .......2007-04-06
I saw these journals a while back but lately decided to purchase one at least and see. I was very pleased when it arrived, beautiful, hard cover and so precious!!
A great buy for yourself or as a gift!
Book Description
From Tom Joad to Norma Rae to Spike Lee's Mookie in Do the Right Thing, Hollywood has regularly dramatized the lives and struggles of working people in America. Ranging from idealistic to hopeless, from sympathetic to condescending, these portrayals confronted audiences with the vital economic, social, and political issues of their times while providing a diversion -- sometimes entertaining, sometimes provocative -- from the realities of their own lives.
In Blue-Collar Hollywood, John Bodnar examines the ways in which popular American films made between the 1930s and the 1980s depicted working-class characters, comparing these cinematic representations with the aspirations of ordinary Americans and the promises made to them by the country's political elites. Based on close and imaginative viewings of dozens of films from every genre -- among them Public Enemy, Black Fury, Baby Face, The Grapes of Wrath, It's a Wonderful Life, I Married a Communist, A Streetcar Named Desire, Peyton Place, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Coal Miner's Daughter, and Boyz N the Hood -- this book explores such topics as the role of censorship, attitudes toward labor unions and worker militancy, racism, the place of women in the workforce and society, communism and the Hollywood blacklist, and faith in liberal democracy.
Whether made during the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, or the Vietnam era, the majority of films about ordinary working Americans, Bodnar finds, avoided endorsing specific political programs, radical economic reform, or overtly reactionary positions. Instead, these movies were infused with the same current of liberalism and popular notion of democracy that flow through the American imagination.
Book Description
In The Miraculous Day of Amalia Gomez, Amalia Gomez thinks she sees a large silver cross in the sky. A miraculous sign, perhaps, but one the down-to-earth Amalia does not trust. Through Amalia, we take a vivid and moving tour of the "other Hollywood," populated by working-class Mexican Americans, as John Rechy blends tough realism with religious and cultural fables to take us into the life of a Chicano family in L.A. Epic in scope and vision, The Miraculous Day of Amalia Gomez is classic Rechy.

Hauntingly Powerful.......2004-02-24
Gorgeous prose graces every page of this book! The ending is one of the truly all-time greats -- the work of a master at his peak. The story will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered about the meaning of faith. Don't be put off by the book's small size -- this novel packs a punch, well after you've put it down!
Book Description
This path-breaking book reveals how Hollywood became "Hollywood" and what that meant for the politics of America and American film. Working-Class Hollywood tells the story of filmmaking in the first three decades of the twentieth century, a time when going to the movies could transform lives and when the cinema was a battleground for control of American consciousness. Steven Ross documents the rise of a working-class film movement that challenged the dominant political ideas of the day. Between 1907 and 1930, worker filmmakers repeatedly clashed with censors, movie industry leaders, and federal agencies over the kinds of images and subjects audiences would be allowed to see. The outcome of these battles was critical to our own times, for the victors got to shape the meaning of class in twentieth- century America.
Surveying several hundred movies made by or about working men and women, Ross shows how filmmakers were far more concerned with class conflict during the silent era than at any subsequent time. Directors like Charlie Chaplin, D. W. Griffith, and William de Mille made movies that defended working people and chastised their enemies. Worker filmmakers went a step further and produced movies from A Martyr to His Cause (1911) to The Gastonia Textile Strike (1929) that depicted a unified working class using strikes, unions, and socialism to transform a nation. J. Edgar Hoover considered these class-conscious productions so dangerous that he assigned secret agents to spy on worker filmmakers.
Liberal and radical films declined in the 1920s as an emerging Hollywood studio system, pressured by censors and Wall Street investors, pushed American film in increasingly conservative directions. Appealing to people's dreams of luxury and upward mobility, studios produced lavish fantasy films that shifted popular attention away from the problems of the workplace and toward the pleasures of the new consumer society. While worker filmmakers were trying to heighten class consciousness, Hollywood producers were suggesting that class no longer mattered. Working-Class Hollywood shows how silent films helped shape the modern belief that we are a classless nation.
Customer Reviews:
Little Known Labour History.......2001-02-24
Steven J. Ross shines a light on a little known and rarely examined period of cinema and labour history. In Working-Class Hollywood (Silent Film and the Shaping of class in America), he looks at the movies created by, for or against the labour movement and its emerging class identity. It is so interesting as it is a time of growth and struggle for both the cinema and the labour movements and the author shows how these two forces bumped and grinded with each other in a way movies never would again. Movies helped create a certain image of class and by the thirties this was pretty much set in stone so it is the period of the silent film where the struggle to shape that identity ensued. This book is amazingly well researched and accessible for the reader of either cinema, labour, or American history. Sometimes the author stretches his point and the reader will be frustrated that many of the films discussed are unavailable for viewing but these are small caveats to an impressive work.
Walking the picket line in silent films.......1999-01-22
Anyone interested in films dealing with social issues will love this book. In the 1910's the movie studios made many films that dealt with the relationship between management and workers. In the 1920's, a combination of lack of funds, censors and powerful movie studios combined to restrict stories of class conflict from the screen. This book explores one-reel melodramas by D.W. Griffith, comedies by Charlie Chaplin that ridicule people in authority, the "Red Scare" films from after World War I, and the films produced by labor activists themselves. It shows how many films used stereotypes of violent strikers that were not realistic. By necessity, this book is sympathetic to labor unions, but that does not interfere with the author's analysis of his subject.

Book Description
While the myth of a classless America endures in the American Dream, the very stratification that it denies unfairly affects the majority of Americans. Study after study shows that it's increasingly difficult for working class people to achieve upward mobility in the US - so how does the American Dream continue to thrive?
J. Emmett Winn shows us that the American Dream's continued glorification in contemporary Hollywood cinema should not be ignored. Through his thoughtful analysis of films as diverse as Working Girl, Titanic, Pretty Woman, Flashdance, The Firm, Good Will Hunting, Saturday Night Fever, Wall Street and many others, Winn shows that contemporary Hollywood is very much in the business of keeping the Dream alive.

Fun reading!.......2001-10-09
Great stories by a great storyteller. Reading each chapter is like eating a bowl of peanuts, before you know it you're done and really enjoyed!
Excellent resource book........1998-10-07
Author, historian, Larry Brown, has written a well researched book on the house's of illrepute popular on the western frontier.
Fun reading. Great stories of frontier Wyoming........1998-03-20
Great snapshot of stories of Wyoming's early days and the "entertainment" available to the cowboys and the trouble they got into when they were entertaining. It appears that a lot of research had to be done to find out the details and stories to put into this writing. Fun reading..

Customer Reviews:
My "Flight Instructor" .......2007-01-18
William Kershner's Student Pilot Guide was my flight guide when learning to sit in the left front seat of an airplane. His text was straightforward, lucid and most helpful (I am still alive and kicking, if not flying). "Logging Flight Time" adds a great sense of humor to his ability to impart knowledge and tell a story. A very worthwhile and funny read.
Like Sitting Around The FBO.......2002-11-12
Other than flying, the next best thing for a pilot is talking to others who fly, listening to their stories, telling some of your own and sharing the thought that we all think of at the end of a flight, "cheated death again." Bill Kershner has pretty much done it all from ragwing taildraggers to flying jets off an aircraft carrier. All of his yarns are interesting, some are humorous, many are instructional, gleaned from 50 years of flying. Reading this reminds me of many days when weather or some other matter outside of our control found us sitting around the FBO telling our stories and listening to others. Bill's stories are well worth listening to.
Getting over the clouds..........2001-06-30
William Kershner is a technical author with a flair for humor that is reminiscent of Samuel Clements. His writings are clear, instructional, and pure reading enjoyment. Bill's latest work, "Logging Flight Time" is a core book for the libraries of true pilots everywhere. It also is a MUST for non-fliers who might like insight into those individuals who lived during an era when aviators were heroes.
Kershner's crisp collection of events from his career will appeal to all who have any fascination for the sheer fun and wonder of flight.
Logging Flight Time.......2001-05-20
I was lucky enough to meet Bill Kershner some years ago at his Ace Flying Academy in Sewanee TN. Having read his articles in the AOPA magazine it was no surprise to find a very readable book. So much so that I sat awake all night on the flight back to the UK reading it! I hope that he has more stories to tell and will publish them soon
Enjoyable Reading.......2001-05-11
Mr. Kershner has a way of expressing his thoughts in print which I can understand. His instructional books are some of the best so I was interested to see how his pilot autobiography would read. He didn't disappoint me. This is an enjoyable book which will keep you awake when you should be sleeping late at night. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter every time I finished the one I was reading. It is always good for me to read how these knowledgeable pilots such as Mr. Kershner started their careers and I know there may still be hope for me.

Guitar and sound quality perfectionist.......2004-01-19
A guitarist as good as Joe Satriani is often overlooked by the critics, case in point the Grammy Nominations. Fans however, recognize the talent and fluidity of a well crafted artist.
This is probably Joe's farthest reaching CD covering a wide variety of musical types.
SLEEPWALK a 40's or 50's sounding tune that flows smoothly and quietly with resonance.
CHORDS OF LIFE which is an enhancement to what All Along The Watchtower probably should've sounded like had it evolved.
Sometimes referred to as the "gymnast of guitarists" his work is not simply visual as it is eclectic. Joe's ability to pour out "perfect" tone over and over again is evident in this book of work which is a must have for any guitarist of any style.
The variety in this book will help any guitarist to further polish there chops and help to increase there sensitivity to the appreciation of tonal quality.

For the very first time, all of the captains from every Star Trek series will be featured in one calendar. Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, and Archer are included. This calendar has all the adventures Star Trek fans love.
Customer Reviews:
A great Trek calender!.......2003-02-04
I got mine from a 99cent Store (they had a whole box of 'em) and I thought this was just some cheap calender, but when I opened it up, I was really amazed at how nice it is. Great graphics, nice large blocks for writing in, even a nifty sweet poster of all the ships from Trek (from the NX-01 to Voyager) and thier size comparisons.
This is definately a keeper even at the full price. I think any Trek fan would love this calender.
For once in a great while ...better calenders!!!.......2002-12-28
The Star Trek calender series has gotten stale with each year having their Voyager,Deep Space Nine and Next Generation editions. This one has great photography and enough space to actually write appointments and important events. I wish that the multiple photos on one page idea the original series had this year was part of this edition. I wish that more factoids and trivia were part of the calenders also. It's worth the price.
A High Quality and Good Images........2002-12-23
As with all the past calendars, this 2003 calendar with the featured Captains of all the series. It is very colorful and filled with great images and graphics.
I liked the design and full color - obviously digitally enhanced - to create the real feeling of the performanes in their images. A good calendar for the Star Trek fan. (12-22-02)

Star Trek's "Ships of the Line" Calendar.......2002-12-17
It a very good Calender, the Pictures are all original art work.a great job.
A pretty cool calender!.......2002-11-16
Sure to become a collectable, this calender features some great shots of the favorite ships of Star Trek. Every one from the classic Enterprise to Voyager and even the new Enterprise. The pictures are so nice that you will be proud to hang this on your office wall. Just don't ruin it, you will want to go back and look at it time and time again.
The Debate Continues.......2002-10-17
The issue of to landscape or not to landscape has been argued long and hard since this calendar first came out. Personally, I like the landscape version as I don't write on my calendar, I just use it to reference the date. Perhaps they should release two versions of the calendar and then we can debate "letterbox versus fullscreen" to our little trekkie heart's content. As always it's the artwork that keeps me buying this calendar no matter what the format. The beautifully rendered pictures are so much more fascinating than a calendar filled with frames cut from the TV shows or movies. I would have rated it five stars, but Simon and Schuster has cancelled the book that they have been promising in the last two versions of the calendar, so I'm a little peeved at them.
THE BEST.......2002-10-17
Fantastic! Poster sized pictures of starships from all five trek series! And unlike last years calendar (half page, artificial distortion and art effects like blurring?) this one is not a huge disappointment. Fortunately they've returned to SHIPS OF THE LINE format from the 2001 inaugural edition. Sure they still haven't figured out where to put the holes (or at least offer an optional hanger that helps display it) but lets face it, you're not buying this for the dates, this is traffic stopper and I'd get a calendar frame because each one of these pictures are art. Finally I don't have to spend a month facing Quark's/Worf's/Neelix's/Phlox's/place over prosthetically made up alien face here. Keep it up Pocket, you've got a winner here!
Could be a lot better.......2002-10-16
What distinguishes Adam 'Mojo' Lebowitz and Rob Bonchune are their credentials. Mojo, now a freelancer, was working for the renown CGI vendor Foundation Imaging from the start, producing effects for the original version of Babylon 5's pilot 'The Gathering' along with the company's founder Ron Thornton. Mojo and Rob were instrumental to the first three seasons of the show which proved that computer-generated imagery, if done well, can signficiantly lower the cost and improve the quality of visual effects on television.
This was a big reason why Foundation Imaging was hired to create CG effects for the third and subsequent seasons of 'Star Trek: Voyager' and was, along with Digital Muse (now basically Eden FX), responsible for most of the CGI in that show, the last two seasons of 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' and now 'Enterprise.' Mojo in particular has been tinkering with the Foundation/Eden library of CG models, trying to make it suitable for the photographic medium while commissioning new or improved models from his friends and other talented artists for the purpose of calendars, magazine covers and reference books.
This calendar shows some of them, including a brand-new Defiant by Andrew Bradbury which combines features of the physical miniature and the first Digital Muse model, a TOS Enterprise and shuttle by Daren Dochterman and the Enterprise-E on the front cover. While making this calendar, Mojo also was working on a book called 'Unseen Frontier' which, as we now know, will not be published as planned. It was supposed to depict scenes from Federation history only hinted at in the shows, and a lot of fan input went into making this book as true to Star Trek as possible.
The book might be the reason why two-thirds of the images in this calendar are rather the 'seen' frontier -- recreations by Mojo and other artists of scenes we've seen onscreen, and as such hardly of interest compared to those in the previous calendars. The calendar likewise contains a simple frame-grab, unless ILM contributed an original Veridian III evacuation scene. There is also an unusual amount of blur, which obscures details on some of the scenes. The horizontal book format is a plus for those who want to see the scenes in a two-page 'widescreen' mode, but not for actually hanging the calendar on a wall.
For more of Mojo, Rob, and company's work, check out 'Starship Spotter', the 2001 and 2002 'Ships of the Line' calendars as well as 'Star Trek: The Magazine', where Mojo continues to contribute many original covers. Foundation Imaging also produced special effects for the Director's Edition of 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture,' and is now a CG vendor on 'Enterprise.'

Scraping the barrel.......2003-01-21
The 2003 Star Trek desk calendar features a lot of unremarkable shots of various characters standing or sitting or posing for the unit photographer. Apparently all the "good" pictures have been used in previous years' editions. No ships or planetscapes this time, just dull unit photographs taken during rehearsals (one photo shows Sisko, Nog and a large black boom microphone). Little care was taken in design or in production, many of the photos were printed backwards (a quick flip through and I've found six already). To make matters worse the accompanying captions border on the ridiculous. For example the caption for a shot of Tuvok regarding an origami swan informs us that "The Vulcan Tuvok is often intrigued by challenging puzzles." Another shows an expressionless Sulu standing, stiffly holding a tricorder. The caption reads "Sulu narrowly escapes death while exploring a seemingly uninhabited Class-M planet". The majority of these shots have appeared in magazines, on trading cards, etc. dozens of times over. There is little action or drama in this selection, it's more akin to a collection of snapshots from some discarded family photo album. What do you expect with such exciting scenes as "Seven consults with Kim in a hallway". There is nothing here to indicate that Star Trek is even remotely interesting. In fact, just staring at this dull calendar day in, day out is making me rapidly lose interest as well.
When Good Merchandising Goes Bad !!!.......2003-01-21
I haven't bought one of these for a couple of years but was quite excited to get one when I heard that it would be the first to feature scenes from "Enterprise". Fortunately I got it in a sale for a fraction of the retail price and just as well too !!! Quite frankly this is one of the worst ... pieces of Star Trek merchandise in recent years. Many of the pictures are just ones they have used before and for the most part are quite boring. There is no picture of Captain Archer's Enterprise, in fact the only starship pictured is from the Original series featuring the old NCC-1701 caught in the Tholian Web. While I like this image it has been printed a million times and most Satr Trek fans probably see it in their sleep. However worst of all ... and boy this really bugs an Original series fan like me ... a large portion of the Original series pictures have been printed the wrong way round !!! Sorry but there is no excuse for this, all the printers had to do was look at the insignia on the uniforms to figure out which way round the images should be. With this kind of lousy quality control it is clear that this was just a cheap rush job, and the makers were only concerned with getting it out in the shops to make a quick profit. Shame on Simon & Schuster and shame on Paramount who don't seem to care about the slide in quality of recent Star Trek products. "Warp speed Scotty, I see another cash cow on the horizon to butcher !!!"
The purpose of a calendar is to SEE THE DATE!!!!.......2003-01-02
I have had a "Stardate" calendar on my desk ever since they started issuing them in 1997 and have enjoyed every year...except for this 2003 edition. I myself am a graphic designer and can not understand what... Paramount/Pocket Books has doing their designs but the dates on this version of the calendar are entirely too small! The purpose of a box calendar is for one to quickly be able to read the current date at a glance. This year's calendar has the numbers so small in the lower left corner that by the time you find it, you might as well have just searched for it on a wall calendar.
Also, enough of this centering the entire Star Trek universe around this pethetic excuse for a show called "Enterprise". I buy the Stardate calendars for the Star Trek aspect, not the new "Enterprise" show logo on every page!
Take it from a graphic designer and a 20 year Star Trek fan...don't waste your money on this year's Stardate Calendar.
A new design.........2002-12-04
Quite nice in fact! Star Trek Stardate 2003 calendar
has now daily memo lined space and more text..Ideal
for the work desk!!
The Trek photos get smaller each year.........2002-10-31
What is it with the folks who design these calenders? Each year the pictures get smaller. I understand you need room to write but how about making the calender larger so you can see the picture on your desk? The photos should not be the size of a postage stamp. I used to get three of them for each room in the house. I will be getting the Simpsons block calender this year. At least they have interesting facts and cartoon characters from each season on the page.

This Has Great Qulaity And Color!.......2003-01-01
This calendar gives great honor to the original series. The quality of the imagery and the creative design of each moth make this calendar a must for every Star Trek fan.
They have always said - nothing can replace the original series and these are the images to prove it. Full, deep rich colors!

Rare classic photos of the crew.......2002-10-19
At last someone has designed the calenders the way they should be. With large enough spaces to write appointments and events...this one has more than one photo per month. On the bottom of each monthly pic there is another that explains the details of the episode it was taken. Calenders of the past were not as visually striking as this one. I'd hope that the powers that be use good designs like this one in future editions.
