The coarse was very clear and well organized etc. The problem I had with it is it concentrated on words I never use. example- consolate, pastry shop, railroad station. I wanted to learn how to talk to someone in Spanish. Everywhere I have traveled in Mexico all the airports etc all speak English so I don't need all the travel words, I wanted to have a conversation. Most of this coarse is dedicated to travel.

The value of what you are getting for the price with this set is incredible. There are 11 total discs including the introduction, 8 lessons discs and 2 bonus discs. It includes 3 books (1 for each level) and a case to carry it all in.

The format is good, with English words and phrases followed by a pause then 2 Spanish repetitions each followed by a pause. This gives you a chance to test yourself after the English when you think you've learned and the chance to practice either learning or pronunciation after each of the Spanish.

The books are great, because if you learn like me, they have exactly the same lessons in written format so you can follow along or confirm what you have heard in writing. This has cleared up some pronunciation issues for me.

My only regret with this set, is that the order of the lessons seems to be geared for someone who needs to learn words and phrases a traveler would need first. There are some basics first and then immediately, on the first disc, the lessons go into transportation, hotel, currency, and many other travel related words and phrases. Because you are also being taught some basics and conjugation of verbs at the same time, you really can't skip these sections and come back to them later, or you will miss some of the basics that will be built upon later. So...long story short, as someone who will not be travelling who wants to learn Spanish to help at work and getting along in society, it has frustrated me that I cannot use a lot of what I am learning so far. I can ask where the bus, train, train station, airport and taxi are. I can ask for a one way ticket, how to get a taxi from the airport, and how to get the train from Madrid to Paris, but I can't yet ask for 2 pounds of chicken at the local Mexican grocery store that I frequent.

So...you'll need to be patient. I do like that they alternate a man and woman doing the English and Spanish and then vice versa on the next lesson. This exposes you to different pronunciations and voices and keeps the boredom at bay.

I do recommend this set as a starter, but I will also be buying another to see if I can find something better.

The Good and the Bad Points of Learn In Your Car Spanish?.......2007-05-11

As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review Spanish courses that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker of Argentina and a professional private Spanish instructor.

I will start with the good points of Learn in Your Car Spanish:

1. The course starts with a very thorough overview of how-to-learn-a-language by language-learning guru, Graham E. Fuller. If you are not familiar with Graham E. Fuller he is the author of How to Learn a Foreign Language. To one extent or another, Fuller has studied more than a dozen languages including Latin, Greek, Russian, Arabic, Persian, Turkish and countless European languages. In Learn in Your Car Spanish, Fuller begins by giving the student a roadmap to learning a foreign language. Although he does not hesitate to tell the student that learning a foreign language takes lots and lots of hard work, he does provide the student with a roadmap that has numerous short cuts.

2. Learn in Your Car Spanish puts an emphasis on communication and the author of the course knows that it is not always necessary to use a complete sentence to convey a thought when having a typical conversation.

3. Learn in Your Car Spanish is based upon the premise that the best way to learn a language is the way that a child learns, by learning one-word sentences, two-word sentences, three-word sentences, etc.

4. The course also teaches the most useful vocabulary first instead of having the student memorize vocabulary that she will never use. It also puts an emphasis on survival and Spanish for getting-around.

5. When Spanish grammar is introduced in the course it is done so with the use of examples as opposed to rigid rules.

6. No textbook is required. So just like the name of the course, you can "Learn in Your Car Spanish." But the transcript is included in case you are an auditory-text learner.

7. The course attempts to use literal translations whenever possible to enable the student to understand the structure of Spanish grammar and to understand the definition of Spanish words. I personally use this technique by teaching my own students that "me gusta el carro" does not mean "I like the car," but "to me it's pleasing (the car)."

8. The greatest point of the course is that it covers a tremendous amount of content. I don't know of any auditory Spanish course for just over $30 that covers nearly as much content.

But Learn in Your Car Spanish is not a Spanish course that's devoid of an Anchiles heel or two:

1. There are some mistakes in the audio translations.

2. The teaching method is basically a listen-and-repeat approach. A listen-and-repeat method is probably not the most modern and advanced way for a complete newbie to learn a foreign language because the newbie is not forced to really think in the target language. But a listen-and-repeat method can be helpful for an intermediate or advanced student that is looking to expand her vocabulary. Even though the course has a frailty or two, I still give it 5 stars. Compared to what else is on the market in this price range, you are not going to find a course that covers so much content and that gives you a bonus lesson in language-learning by one of the world's greatest language-learning experts.

This cd set was easy to follow and well paced. On occasion the words were difficult to understand, but that is when the included booklets come in handy. Unfortunately, I had to return the set to library before I could finish it, so I am going to buy it.

The previous reviewer's main complaint seems to be the lack of time given for a response to the dialog, however I must disagree. Although Spanish is my familys first language I never fully acquired the language and have had to resort to self study to supplement what knowledge I allready had. This being said, I feel that though the response time is admittedly breif I have not had any problems producing the repeated word or response once I have listened once or twice to a section. Language learning in this format is built upon repitition which not only trains your ear but programs words and phrases into your mind with little effort. As such, to reap the benefits of this type of "easy" learning you must listen again and again. ( I have found 3-4 times per section usually does the trick of locking it in my mind)

Learn Spanish in Your Car.......2002-03-04

I have the audio cassette version of this course. I enjoy the way that it approaches teaching Spanish by building on words that you already know. I like the way that one is able to answer once and repeat twice after the native speaker replies in Spanish. I would give this course a much higher rating if it only gave you more time to reply. If you have to think at all to translate, then the native speaker is already giving the answer. Often there isn't enough time to repeat what the native speaker says afterwards if you knew perfectly what to say or simple said it back in English. I had a Spanish speaking friend try it and he couldn't reply in time. The pauses aren't long enough.
If one wanted to learn at home where a pause button is an option, then this woud be an excellent course. In the car, however, where a pause button is not an option, it doesn't work that well and is frustrating.

Travel's not easy for the vegetarian voyager--at least the dining aspect isn't. Sure, you know where to go in your own home town for good vegetarian fare, but eating on the road is often fraught with unpleasant surprises (such as the meat stock in an allegedly vegetarian dish) or culinary disappointments (another meal of bread and cheese, how thrilling). The Vegetarian Journal's Guide to Natural Foods Restaurants in the U.S. & Canada is a godsend for vegetarians away from home, listing more than 2,000 restaurants, spas, vacation spots, inns, camps, tours, and travel agencies that cater to herbivores. Alphabetical organization brings order to the listings. It's arranged alphabetically by states for the U.S. and by provinces for Canada, then alphabetically by city within each state or province, and alphabetically again by restaurant within each city. And for each spot, the authors provide the necessary information in a few pithy lines. Not every restaurant is strictly vegetarian, so along with address, phone, hours of operation, price category, and which credit cards are accepted, they list the vegetarian details you need to know, such as how Minga's Mexican Restaurant in Glendale, Arizona, does not use lard in their vegetarian burritos or fajitas, but that the rice may contain chicken, so you need to ask first. Restaurants that are strictly vegetarian or vegan are marked as such, as are the places the authors specifically recommend. As for the rest, it's good just to know in advance that Bongkot Thai Express in San Rafael, California, offers 17 vegetarian dishes; that the China Pavilion in Atlanta, Georgia, uses vegetarian broth for all its vegetarian menu items; and that the No Pop Sandwich Shoppe in Whitehorse, Yukon, makes veggie burgers, pastas, and salads--but eschews soda pop. Outdated.......2002-01-01

I agree with the other reviewers that the material in this book is extremely outdated. Instead of just showing up at the establishment, I called ahead to inquire about hours, etc. I would estimate about 2/5 of the calls I made were disconnected numbers. I hope the VRG decides to revise and create another edition of this book, as the concept is fantastic. My advice is to hold off purchasing this book.

I agree with the last reviewer who found this book out of date. I've had the same experience in my cross-country travels of finding closed/non existent restaurants, and I'm one of the contributors to the book! I've crossed out many of the entries in my copy and know of several new vegetarian restaurants that opened since.

It's not that this is a bad book. On the contrary, it contains the names, addresses, phone numbers, descriptions, prices, etc. of restaurants, plus information on vacation spots. But like an old phone book, this type of information quickly goes out of date and needs frequent updating. There are websites where you can get up-to-date vegetarian restaurant information for free.

Outdated material.......2000-04-16

My family was very disapointed to arrive in several U.S. cities(Sacramento, Los Angeles, Pasadena,and Northridge in California and Portland and Ashland, Oregon), armed with our veggie guide book, only to discover many of the restaurants were out of business. The latest printing says 1998 yet one restaurant in Sacramento, Ca. (Marline's Vegetable Patch), we were told, had been closed for four years. This book needs a serious update. We were let down numerous times and it really messed up our plans. The resource woud be great if it really had been revised in 1998. Also, there are some great Vegan and vegetarian restaurants that are left off the list completely. It makes me wonder who is doing the scouting for Vegetarian Journal.

A tree died to make this book???.......2000-12-30

Looking for a light-hearted gift for my dad as he approached retirement, I thought that this book might fit the bill. Was I wrong! Amazingly, a book covering topics along the line of retirement, this was written as if a teenager were to read it. Don't get me wrong... I'm not one of those types that doesn't appreciate immature humor. This was not humorous... just stupid.

Microsoft Office 2000, masterful.......2001-10-05

After looking at all of the office 2000 books available, I thought this one was the friendliest. Nice typeset, easy on the eyes, a good index. Lots of tips. Great for the beginner and helpful to people who are upgrading from an earlier version. It tells the reader how. Now if you really want to go deeper into the subjects consider getting each of the Mastering books separately.

This book, in my opinion, is really a suitable book for the professional to do complex in a efficient and effective way. Abundant description explain everything in a clear concepts. So it is time for you to get one if you are really be headache in how to deal with the formulas or graphics, or finalise the reporting.
