5 out of 5 stars pharmacopoeia.......2007-07-21

I love this handy pharmacopoeia. It is a great reference and it has dosages for infants which is why I bought it.

5 out of 5 stars Pharmacopoeia.......2005-12-10

I've used these books since medical school and still go back to it when I can't find what I need on my palm pilot. It sorts drugs alphabetically and by class and even gives a relative cost estimate. It has an index and also other little tidbits, like algorithms for ACLS, conversion charts, and skin dermatomes. There is nothing that you will ever buy that will give you the same value. It is available in two sizes; I prefer the pocket sized, and I usually get one for the office and leave one in my clinical jacket. It also lists some drugs that are no longer popular, but still necessary at times, such as IV vasotec dosing.

5 out of 5 stars All you ever need.......2005-11-20

I've used this pocket drug guide as a surgical resident for 5 years in an extremely tough residency program where you never had time to sit down and consult a bigger text or your palm pilot. Let me assure you this is all you'll ever need to get you through the drug management of you patients. Now I'm using it in private practice everyday. The best!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Essential for your carryall.......2005-10-03

A must have for all of us who are out of the academic loop and can't remember all of the doseages and schedules. Well organized and easy to use. Great for the price.

The place of Oliver Wendell Holmes in American legal history has long been assured. Few Supreme Court justices have approached the position occupied by Holmes, his decisions and dissents even passing (albeit often inaccurately) into common discourse: "you can't yell fire in a theatre." His legal decisions and dissents possess a literary tone that sets them apart from other jurists': "Every idea is an incitement.... Eloquence may set fire to reason." (Gitlow v. N.Y.) It should be no surprise then to find Holmes's letters to Felix Frankfurter a pleasure to read. The editors' introduction, annotations, and references make the correspondence of these two great minds accessible to readers and browsers of all sorts.

Book Description

Nearly 400 previously unpublished letters capture the essence of an extraordinary and in some ways unlikely friendship between one of America's preeminent jurists and a younger, reform-minded colleague who would himself one day ascend to the Supreme Court. Oliver Wendell Holmes was 71 when introduced to fiery, effervescent Felix Frankfurter, who'd come to Washington at age 30 to serve President Taft. The two couldn't have had more different backgrounds: Holmes a Civil War hero of Boston Brahmin stock, and Frankfurter a Jewish immigrant whose reformist views would lead him to help found the American Civil Liberties Union and act as key advisor to Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal.

With an introduction providing historical background and annotations that supply context for cases mentioned, this unique collection illuminates a strong and mutually satisfying personal and professional relationship between two men whose exchanges on the meaning of law in general and American law in particular, the editors write, "found expression in their work and influenced legal and political change in their own lifetimes and in ours as well."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply a superb collection of correspondence.......2006-06-06

This book is comprised of 373 letters [243 by Holmes; 130 by Frankfurter] exchanged between 1912 and 1934. This is an extremely significant period in the lives of the two correspondents, and the letters are highly interesting. The editors have written an invaluable introduction of some 22 pages discussing the letters, their authors, the many efforts to develop a OWH biography, and the migration of Holmes' papers after his death. The letters themselves cover a variety of topics: the judicial role; socialism; the philosophy of judging; legal history; and of course discussion of some very important cases. A number of individuals are mentioned; these comments are among the most revealing insights into the authors. Among others, OWH and FF tackle Charles Beard, Laski, Brandeis, Learned Hand, Pollock, Wigmore, Keynes, John Zane, Hohfeld, W.W. Buckland, Cardozo, Roscoe Pound, Lord Bryce, and various Supreme Court Justices. Holmes' talent for the pithy expression is well in evidence. For example, he refers to the Clayton Act as "legislative humbug. And of course, Holmes being Holmes, there is discussion of many important books and ideas he was encountering. Interestingly, the editors also believe it likely [as do Urofsky and Levy in their edited collection of Brandeis/FF letters also reviewed on Amazon] that FF destroyed a number of his letters to Holmes after the Justice's death. OWH himself had suggested that FF destroy Holmes' letters during the correspondence. Fortunately, for all of us, this is one instruction FF did not (at least) fully execute. As always, Holmes demonstrates flair, humor, insight, and great knowledge in his letters--he is one of our finest contributors of important letters. This 278 page book has a helpful bibliography, and has been nicely printed by University Press of New England. A book of lasting importance beyond question.

        Book Description
In October 1985, at age 27, Danny Meyer, with a good idea and scant experience, opened what would become one of New York City's most revered restaurants--Union Square Cafe. Little more than twenty years later, Danny is the CEO of one of the world's most dynamic restaurant organizations, which includes 11 unique dining establishments, each at the top of its game. How has he done it? How has he consistently beaten the odds and set the competitive bar in one of the toughest trades around?

In this landmark book, Danny shares the lessons he's learned while developing the winning recipe for doing the business he calls "enlightened hospitality." This innovative philosophy emphasizes putting the power of hospitality to work in a new and counterintuitive way: The first and most important application of hospitality is to the people who work for you, and then, in descending order of priority, to the guests, the community, the suppliers, and the investors. This way of prioritizing stands the more traditional business models on their heads, but Danny considers it the foundation of every success that he and his restaurants have achieved.

Full of behind-the-scenes history on the creation of Danny's most famous restaurants and the anecdotes, advice, and lessons he has accumulated on his long and ecstatic journey to the top of the American restaurant scene, Setting the Table is a treasure trove of innovative insights that are applicable to any business or organization.

Service with a Smile: Dishing with Danny Meyer
Is the customer always right? According to Danny Meyer, one of America's leading restauranteurs, the answer is no--but "they must always feel heard." Named one of the most influential New Yorkers of 2006 by New York magazine, Meyer, the founder and co-owner of 11 of Manhattan's most influential restaurants, including Union Square Cafe, Gramercy Tavern, Tabla, The Modern, Blue Smoke, and Shake Shack, has penned Setting the Table: The Transforming Power of Hospitality, a business book that reads like food lit and equal part personal memoir. Amazon.com senior editor Brad Thomas Parsons took some time from his daily long-distance day-dreaming of Shake Shack and caught up with the ever-gracious Danny Meyer over e-mail to ask about his new book, the Food Network, his favorite cookbooks, insider tips on dining out, and much more.

5 out of 5 stars Great bathroom reading.......2000-08-27

People are strange, as this collection of personals demonstrates. Car analogies, movie analogies, alliteration, alphabetizing, Elvis fans, desires for strange amalgams (Jim Carrey and Albert Einstein), and many more. Great bathroom reading and very funny at times.

5 out of 5 stars Al Gives Personals Best!.......2000-05-10

OK, we know AL, Girl Reporter, from the 'zine world. She was a pioneer in 'zines. Her "Thrift Score" zine was just great fun, wonderful writing and heads above the other stuff. Al Hoff was into thrift stores, before they became today's thrift bores. Fortunately for us, Al has a compulsive writing habit for which there is no 12-step program, so she just keeps producing. Knowing Al's humor, I thought this book would be a good funny read. Well, excuse me, but this book is riotous. Honest. I roared! Al's picks are just so cool. What truly drives Al is the sense of the absurd, but with a heart, ya know? This would be great book for any cool or not even so cool person. I like the shape, too. It's 5 1/2 inches square. Very toteable. And it has big print for our hip grannies. The book is funny. Al is one of America's best kept secrets. Spread the word. Get the book. It is so funny!

She's lugged back the weirdest, most hilarious ones. She has edited and arrayed same to provide a keen insight into how human beings seek each other out in these late 20th Century United States.

5 out of 5 stars "If You Like Pina Coladas..." is very amusing & enjoyable!.......1999-09-24

Pittsburgh writer Al Hoff has turned her attention to finding the most hilarious (oftentimes unintentionally) personal ads in America! This book celebrates the nuttiest and funniest ads, arranged by Al into amusing subgroups such as people who describe themselves as animals, cars, or meals. There are alliterative ads, oddly described features, and peculiar assets! Anyone who has read Al's work knows that she packs every page with lots of humor! This book is no exception. It's really a lot of fun, You can pick it up and read from any page to enjoy it. Sort of a cultural artifact too! People will want to read some of them aloud! Its amazing that no one thought of doing this before, but I'm glad no one did, because Al's version really highlights the funny-ness of it all. The book is attracrive, square-shaped with vibrant lime-green glossy cover, would make a nice stocking stuffer or gift for dorm-mates or wwork-mates. Fun book for those who like to read in the bathroom! Worth getting.

        Book Description

The product of decades of scholarly investigation, Volume 1 contains 67 musical works by the virtuoso Paraguayan guitarist Agustín Barrios Mangoré (1885-1944). This is the first edition of Barrios' music based on all available sources: manuscripts, phonograph recordings and published editions (pre-1970s). Written in standard notation only, the two volumes of this definitive collection are illustrated with period photographs, concert programs and Barrios' own drawings. The legacy of Barrios is one of the most important and outstanding contributions ever made to the classic guitar, and it is with great pride that Mel Bay Publications offers here for the first time in one edition the collected works of Agustín Barrios Mangoré.

Microsoft Windows 2000 internals have a very logical structure. In Inside Microsoft Windows 2000, David Solomon and Mark Russinovich explain what goes on behind the curtain as Windows 2000 manages memory, regulates access to input and output devices, controls persistent storage, communicates with the network, and does the rest of its duties as a modern operating system. This is a text for programmers, and it's packed with call-by-call documentation of what happens when Windows 2000 is told to perform various operations. There's not as much code in this book as you might expect--mostly, it's text. Once you have the architecture figured out, you should be able to implement your code more easily.

The chapter on memory management exemplifies this careful approach to Windows 2000 internals. What memory management does is discussed (it maps the virtual memory range of threads into registers on physical devices, and handles overflow from volatile memory onto disk). Then, you learn the more obvious ways of observing and tweaking memory performance (the Performance tab in Task Manager and the Registry). Finally, you get detailed information on how Windows 2000 handles mapping, and the use of dozens of memory-related Win32 API calls. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system kernel and its internal operations; the specific behaviors of various subsystems, including memory management, threading, security, caching, and network communications.

                5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-11-11

This book has it all. The most comprehensive overview of Windows you will find anywhere

4 out of 5 stars Is a good book, but not very good.......2003-07-18

I have interest in mechanism of microsoft windows 2000/NT, since windows isn't a free OS, I have to read books instead of source code. The book is a famous one focused on system mechanism of win2k,I read it, sure, I got much knowledge from it,but I find it's a little mussy, and not very clear, it's also not detailed enough to understand microsoft win2k/NT.
The book "Understanding the Linux Kernel" By Daniel P. Bovet, Marco Cesati is much better than this one.

4 out of 5 stars clear and interesting, but some things are left out.......2002-03-02

This book is interesting for people who want to learn about what goes on under the hood of Windows 2000. The authors' style is clear and easy to understand and there is a good wealth of precious, in depth information.
It would have been even better if more details were included: some system mechanisms are mentioned, but the details are left out (particularly on LPCs). Also, the book is not oriented toward experimenting with the system by means of writing kernel mode code: nearly all of the experiments are based on the usage of tools. I think the book could have had room for something more if a number of pages of data structures listing (returned by Kd commands) were left out, particularly since these listings have very few comments and therefore add very little to what everyone can get from the debugger.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for any Windows Develepor.......2001-09-29

This book explains windows 2000 internal workings in reasonable breadth and sufficient depth. This book is MUCH better than the 2nd Edition of Inside Windows NT, perhaps because of Mark's contributions.
The only problem with this book is that, inspite of being huge, it is only one volume. I think Windows 2000 is too extensive to fit in one book, and though the book is great for getting at many of the principles, you need to look at the DDK/SDK documentation to get more details, and actually use them in your work. At this level the book provides a great starting point to delve into OS internals, but perhaps someone needs to write a book for each chapter to do justice.

5 out of 5 stars 2000 Systems Programming at its best!!!.......2001-09-14

As a former systems programmer on Burroughs (Unisys) systems, I was always used to knowing how the OS did things. It is a real treat after working on PCs for so long, to finally get a book that makes it interesting to learn the internals again. This book is full of things that will give you an appreciation of any OS, but the way it cracks into the guts of 2000 is great. The experiments in this book make it really easy to learn how 2000 is organized and apply it to existing programming projects. Learning 2000 from the inside via the debugger is just a great way to do it. No offense to David, but Mark's influence is obvious. If you are a fan of his Internals column, you will like this book even better. The fact that he does it without source code is even more amazing. Wait a minute...why hasn't Microsoft paid these guys whatever they want to build the next version of 2000?
If you appreciate a good OS and an even better manual on it...Buy This Book...
