The title, Baby Owner's Manual, suggests the promise and the problem of this cheeky and comprehensive guide written by a pediatrician and his son. First-time parents who are not offended by the observation that "babies, unlike other appliances, lack instruction manuals," will find a rich resource of facts and advice. The book is divided into seven categories of "operating instructions" including home installation, feeding and power supply, sleep mode, maintenance, development, and safety. Complete with witty schematic drawings and charts, the authors answer hundreds of questions about breastfeeding, bed, bath, and beyond. While most manuals focus on tender loving care, the authors chose to focus on baby as technology. The result is a highly useful--almost too cool--reference book. Because every parent knows that babies are messier and more rewarding than this approach imagines. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Great Shower Gift .......2007-03-08

I've given this book as a gift for the last few baby showers I've gone to. My one friend told me that they used this book more than any other during the first few months. It's a helpful book, small so it can travel around easily. Plus it's funny to read through it as if your baby is a car. Great for the Dad since it's written in terms they are used to.
At first when I bought it I thought, oh what a great gag gift. I'm glad it turned out to be helpful to the parents as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great little hand book!.......2007-02-08

As a first time mom who doesn't like to read pages and pages of information, I found this book to be a great quick-reference, packed with a wealth of information... from breastfeeding positions to things you'll need for the arrival of your baby (there are lots of diagrams). I love the book so much, I have bought copies for friends of mine who are also expecting.
At first appearance, the book seems like a joke on having a baby. Really, it's just a smart, refreshing way of presenting the information. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Tongue-in-cheek book for the technically oriented.......2007-01-13

Some people find babies to be like aliens. Everyone knows they are people, but since they are infants ("infans" from the Latin for "without language/speechless"), they can't tell you what's exactly wrong. Some people are technically oriented like my husband and are great troubleshooters -- this book is for them.

I'm giving this book only four stars because I think Be Prepared (a book for new dads) is a more entertaining and more informative read, and deserves a five-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Dads- Reads like an old car manual.......2007-01-07

This was given to my husband (who is an engineer) and he loves it. Since receiving it we have given it to friends who are expecting and they like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative.......2007-01-05

I've bought this book for the last three friends of mine that have had babies and they all love it. It looks like a joke, sort of like a car or appliance manual, but it actually has a tremendous amount of practical advice for new parents. I even have another friend that's put her request in for the same thing when she gets pregnant.

Book Description

Commercial sex is the occupation of a significant portion of the women of the world, providing economic support for millions of people and their families. Working at the Bar is the first-ever, long-term, longitudinal, in-depth study of a large sex work industry--and Thailand, the most prominent nation in the rapidly growing sex tourism industry, makes for an excellent case study. While previous works have provided brief glimpses of one group of workers studied from a particular point of view, author Thomas Steinfatt examines considerations of health, behavior, economics, morality, religion, and worker safety. The result of data gathered from thousands of workers and customers in Thailand over a period of twelve years, Working at the Bar covers all aspects of an industry that, although it does not conform to various Western ideals, is nevertheless enormously significant. Among the most provocative of Steinfatt's arguments is that sex work is not itself immoral, and that far from being the exploitation industry we might imagine, sex work in Thailand is beneficial to everyone involved--especially given that education in this nation has proven not to be a viable alternative. Providing an opportunity for economic progress unavailable through other means, and providing working conditions far safer than those of the average Thai factory, sex work is ripe for a study that explores all aspects and perceptions associated with it. Working at the Bar is that long overdue study.

5 out of 5 stars Informational.......2007-08-06

I thought the information presented in the book was outstanding. I had no idea what these women endure everyday of their lives. Our society is getting worse then it has been or it has always been this way. Since we can get any kind of information in seconds, then this is an example of what our society really wants.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Coverage of Thai Sexwork with Many Interviews.......2003-10-20

I just finished reading Steinfatt's Working at the Bar. An impressive book. I've spent considerable time in Thailand and what he says rings true. What's impressive is both the breadth and depth of coverage. There are whole chapters on why men do, and do not, go to sex workers, and how pimps and management of these places function, how AIDS does and does not relate to sex work, and sections on why women get into the game, or choose not to, and how they talk to and size up customers. Even the error rates for HIV tests are covered, and I have never seen that in print anywhere. This book is not based on opinion. Several thousand interviews were conducted with prostitutes, pimps, customers of prostitutes, and the great landowners of the prostitution areas. The morality of sex work is covered from both Christian and Buddhist perspectives. The author is quite correct about the way Buddhism functions in sex work. Anyone who understands Buddhism knows that the precept against "sexual immorality" historically meant sex outside of marriage by a woman. This is an excellent book, but do not plan on reading it all at once. There is just too much there. If you want to really understand this topic (and not just read someone's opinions who has only read about Thailand but never been there, or someone's opinions who dumps on other people's books but has not studied enough to write about it on his own) this is the book. Steinfatt has obviously been there and done an amazing amount of scholarly work on the topic. The best I have ever seen on prostitution in Southeast Asia.

2 out of 5 stars many shortcomings, but better than other books on this topic.......2003-06-16

Steinfatt's book is one of several recent volumes on sex work in Thailand. The base for the book was a two-wave cross-sectional questionnaire study he did with sex workers in venues where the customers were foreigners (i.e., non-Thai). The findings are woven through topical chapters, rather than being presented in summary form. As a result, it's difficult to find "take home messages" here. Using this format, Steinfatt attempts to place sex work in Thailand into a broader cultural context. While he has done more homework than others on this topic, much of what he says comes up short. He confuses the lack of obvious sanctions for entering the sex trade with "acceptance". He ignores the fact that one can go a short distance from the villages that regularly send their daughters into the sex trade and find other villages where this practice rarely or never occurs (this phenomenon was the basis for work by the Thai Red Cross & the Population and Development Association). His understanding of Buddhism is similarly flawed and he fails to see how "merit making" has been perverted by local elites to foster sex work. Steinfatt begnis by clearly distinguishing his population from the much larger world of Thai sex workers whose clientele is Thai, however, this distinction blurs as the book proceeds. Unfortunately, the distinction is important because of the differences in how women enter sex work, their financial prospects, etc. Steinfatt also goes into a lengthy and not very useful aside regarding estimates of the sex work sector in Thailand---rehashing outdated data which have limited relevance to his population of interest. The book also relies too much on dated references and provides little consideration of how the HIV epidemic and Thailand's 100% condom campaign have effected sex work in the country. The effort to view sex work in Thailand as less "black & white" than in other countries misses the obvious presence of grey areas of sex work elsewhere (e.g., the phenomenon of "survival sex" among low income women in the US) and the tendency of sex workers in many cultures to decommercialize the description of clients to whom they are more affectively bonded. Erik Cohen's famous statements about open-ended prostitution are mentioned, but not Cohen's observation that this was becoming less common as long ago as the late 80s. There are more similarities with other countries than Steinfatt acknowledges, and the differences are more nuanced and require more depth in the culture.

This book shows more scholarly activity than the many slapdash efforts on Thai sexwork that have been published in recent years. Still, it's clear that Steinfatt's actual understanding is rather superficial. The book also would have benefited from a stronger editorial hand, wherein more effort was taken to integrate findings and other text.

      5 out of 5 stars A deadly serious book........2005-04-17

Some readers may be tempted to view this as a book of humor, intended to "lighten up" the often ponderous tendency of American practictioners of Eastern religions to take themselves too seriously. Such readers would be completely mistaken. This is a very serious book. The laughs it elicits on each page are merely sweet flavoring intended to make the deep truths of Tofu Roshi's teachings more palatable.

Gahan Wilson's gruesome Forward is just a premonition of the deep sea of profundity that awaits the eager seeker after enlightenment in this book

The best joke in the book is the one about the Zen Masters changing light bulbs, how it takes two, one to change it and one not to change it. Hmmm. Did I get that right?

Also, there is a running shoe motif thoughout the book that I didn't quite get.

      Am I really that clueless?

See how Enlightenment spreads from the words of Tofu Roshi! I've already started the daily measurement of the length of my toenails.

      5 out of 5 stars That's some Spicy Tofu.......2000-10-01

The interesting thing about Zen is that a humor book about Zen can be just as enlightening as a normal book about Zen. Zen has a strong tradition of humor and self-parody. Susan Ichi Su Moon has a warm heart which shows through her gentle and hilarious book. I couldn't have said it better myself.

4 out of 5 stars Zen parody hits home.......2000-04-19

Tofu Roshi is the alter ego of Susan Moon, a longtime Zen practitioner and writer living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Tofu Roshi's advice to the lovelorn, instructions on meditation, and overall guidance on life gave me many, many belly laughs. Roshi's words are complimented by photos of his (or is it her? Tofu Roshi's gender is rather questionable!) students hard at work to get enlightened. If you know anything about Buddhism, or are involved in a Buddhist group {sangha), and are prone to taking yourself and the practice too seriously, this book is just the right medicine for you.

      Book Description

It has been over twenty-five years since punk rock transformed the landscape of music and popular culture, but the significance of the era continues to endure. Whether you take your Year Zero from The Stooges in 1969 or the heady bile of The Clash and Sex Pistols, it's impossible to overstate the importance of punk. This book examines the songs that encapsulated punks' message of dissatisfaction, anger, and integrity. From The Stooges, The Clash, and Sex Pistols through The Buzzcocks, The Stranglers, The Undertones, and The Damned to the later, artier punk of Joy Division, Wire, and The Fall, as well as the American front of Ramones, Suicide, Talking Heads, and Blondie, author Steven Wells dissects punk's nihilistic classic tunes. Why were The Clash “So Bored with The USA”? What made Johnny Rotten dismiss the Queen as “a moron”? What were the undertones of The Stranglers' seemingly benign “Golden Brown”? What “Psycho Killer” was the focus of the Talking Heads classic song? Why were the Bad Brains “Banned in D.C.”? And who was the Ramones' Sheena? All of these answers, dozens of photographs and more are provided in detail in Punk: Loud, Young, and Snotty.

My parents take long walks together in the evenings,
and it is clear that theirs is a good and full life.

IÂ'm riding an empty subway car to an engagement with fresh
strangers and pray tonight wonÂ't be like the night beforeÂ…
and the one before and the one before and the one before.

My mother power shops at the supermarket daily.
My father can spend three days with the Sunday paper.

      I envy their satisfaction.
I stand in awe of their pleasure capacity.

TheyÂ've found all they needed in modern living.

      —The Blue Line

Poem by poem, The Man-Child Chronicles captures this small awakening and all the other tiny revelations that lead from youth to maturity. Family, friendships, sex and individuality take on new dimensions. Careers, ethics and character quit being abstract and become real issues of contention. Meanwhile, there is an ongoing struggle to be simultaneously cool, true and responsible. The Man-Child Chronicles illustrates that even today growing up is never easy and never impossible.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars True to Life.......2003-10-24

What a wonderfully delightful and true-to-life work that Newson has composed. I have never been compelled to write a review in this forum before but after reading The Man-Child Chronicles I couldn't help but offer my two cents. Newson covers all the contradicting emotions of a young person growing up in a confusing world. His uncompromising honesty brings the reader back to a time when life was supposedly much simpler yet truly so complex. You feel a young man's uncertainty as you navigate through poems about trust, family and self. The Man-Child Chronicles is great piece of art for anyone wishing to gain a better understanding of all the "troubled" kids around us that we are often so quick to write off.

4 out of 5 stars The Man-Child ChroniclesýComing of Age.......2003-09-10

Rasheed's poetry and sometimes non-poetry is filled with vivid imagery and a captivating mix of feelings of unworthiness, inquisitiveness, failure and triumph. The Man-Child Chronicles is a wonderful dichotomy, a collection of poems that accurately represents the multiple, and oftentimes conflicting, desires within us all. The poetry is irreverent, yet considerate and deferential. It is brash and bold, yet unassuming. Its themes are universal, yet specific. Isn't that who we are, particularly when we're young and haven't quite figured ourselves out altogether? The author sucessfully sheds light on and puts into perspective a boatload of feelings, of what it's like to be male, young, gifted, afraid, daring and evolving.

Rasheed shows ingenuity in his writing style. There is sometimes more than one way to read his poems. The feeling that goes along with discovering other ways to read the text is similar to how a kid feels when he unexpectedly finds five dollars on his way to the candy store. In order to unlock other meanings (and sometimes I think the author's intended meanings), the author invites you to read his texts in nontraditional ways.

Be prepared to laugh, to be entertained, to be made angry, to be challenged, and to fall in and out of love with The Man-Child Chronicles. The author's honesty and passion as conveyed through his words is refreshing. I've found very few weaknesses in the book. Its themes and the experiences it recounts are human and relatable. The author lays himself bare for everyone to see. Some of my favorite poems are "Matuity," "Only A Friend Will," "Damn Him" and "Foreplay." I recommend this book to all poetry lovers who have at one time suffered feeling awkward and who have dared to dream big.

          Book Description

You'll loveThe Robosapien Companion: Tips, Tricks, and Hacks whether you're a robotics expert or beginner. And whether you own a Robosapien or not, or are anticipating the V2 release, you'll learn about the workings and theory of this fun robot. An owner of several Robosapiens himself, author Jamie Samans covers everything from basics like diagnosing and testing your new Robosapien, to advanced topics like hacking and modifications. He thoroughly covers what he calls the "curiosity and creativity" of this famous bot.

The book functions as both a practical user guide and an interesting read about the theory behind the machine: BEAM robotics. (BEAM stands for biology, electronics, aesthetics, and mechanics.) You'll learn about Robo's 67 unique functions, and get the full scoop on the upcoming line of Robosapiens: the Robopet, the Roboraptor, and the bipedal Robosapien V2. By the book's end, you'll come to master your V1 or become fully prepared for the exciting upgrades planned for V2.

4 out of 5 stars ROBOSAPIEN MUST HAVE GUIDE.......2007-06-08

This is a good book to have for ur robot, has a lot of neat ideas and ways to modify your robosapien and make it that much more fun to play with

1 out of 5 stars This book is a dud!!!!.......2007-01-18

I was very upset when I received this book. This book does not help in the least with your robot. It is more the maker of the robot just cursing and telling about how you can add things to the robot. I wanted to know more about the robot and how I could use him not create a new robot.
If you do not mind cursing and you would like to ADD things to the robots than you may like the book.
You must be interested in building robots.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Framework for Exploring.......2006-01-09

Having read a number of robotics books, what struck me first was how well structured Robosapien Companion is. This is not simply a collection of hacks and technical tidbits. Rather, it is a companion in the truest sense. Samans deftly follows the full curve of Robosapien's life, starting with Mark Tildens early BEAM endeavors and Robosapien's development, moving to cracking into the box and getting the most from a virgin 'sapien, and rounding it out with basic and advanced hacking techniques.

Two different but alike audiences will enjoy this book. The first are those looking to get more play from the Robosapien toy. The text offers plenty to do. Though I bought my Robosapien to hack, I found myself keeping it in one piece and trying out the programming lessons and "secret" functions. The second audience are those who admire Mark Tilden's work and want to know how he applied it to Robosapien.

Being a member of this last, I found two chapters of particular interest. First, I appreciated the chapter on the development of Robosapien. Samans discusses some of Mark Tilden's design principles and shows how they culminated in a biped at the Telluride workshop. This was, of course, the first Robosapien. Samans goes on to capture the excitement of Robosapien's early days. Next, I enjoyed Chapter 6 on controlling and walking. This showed where Robosapien falls in the spectrum of passive-dynamic machines. Passive-dynamics is a hot topic in robotics circles and Robosapien Companion hints at the potential of using a 'sapien for exploring these ideas

In fact, finishing Robosapien Companion leaves me with an urge to explore all sorts of things with a Robosapien. Samans provides a good framework for such explorations, weaving in commentary from Mark Tilden, expanding upon the ideas, and rounding out with links to the online community. Companion is a good book and I recommend it.

          5 out of 5 stars What a pleasant surprise.......2006-01-08

I bought a RoboSapien about 8 months ago. I tell people that I got it for my kids, but I just couldn't resist it - it looked so cute. Anyway, I played with it for a few hours and then got bored with it. It has spent the last 8 months collecting dust on a shelf.

Yesterday, I happened across this book at B&N and have been reading it ever since. Way to go Jamie! The shell of this thing totally threw me off and I never thought to crack it open. I like the mods you made - very practical and I am strongly considering adding the camera so I can check on my home when I am on vacation - or maybe spy on my kids.

Very good book - easy to read - really cool subject - I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A must - have book for Robosapiens fans....!!!.......2005-10-23

Honestly I have not finished reading this book, but I have enjoyed every page of it that I decided to give it a well deserved review. Very well written, simple, and enjoyable. This book goes from the very beginning, history and development of the Robosapien, interviews with Mark Tilden (Robosapien creator),from packaging of the robot, tips, tricks, and ways to Hacking it, with lot of black & white pictures of the robot and its internal parts. The book also give a preview of the Robosapien online community with info and resources, and insights for the new Robosapien v2. If you own a Robosapien or going to buy one, you owe this book to yourself.
