Anyone can summarize a collection of cases, but not everyone can make them read well. With a flair for compressed narrative worthy of a good short story writer, Colin Evans entertains and instructs the reader with 100 cases that exemplify the use of 15 different forensic techniques (ballistics, fingerprinting). Some (like the Lindbergh case) are famous, others are barely known, yet each has some unique twist that sets it apart. Many "firsts" are included, such as the first murder conviction without a body, the first use of psychological profiling, and the first use of DNA typing. Evans also brings out the distinct (often flamboyant) personalities of the pioneering experts of forensics and some of their more notable courtroom theatrics. Each case is labeled by name of criminal, forensic technique, date, location, and significant feature(s), making this a useful reference as well as a fun book to read.

Book Description

5 out of 5 stars Makes CSI come to life.......2007-04-12

Good to see that science can be used in the cases and solve them in some cases.

5 out of 5 stars informative.......2006-08-06

I found this book very informative. It covers all the bases with the range of forensic technique discussed. The only draw back ,to me, was it seemed that some areas could have been elaborated on more. Overall this was an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating read.......2006-05-03

Recommended for anyone with more than a slight interest in forensics. The author nicely divides the book into different categories of forensic science and looks at various cases. Fast read.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read........2005-08-12

I originally choose this book because I was looking for a book to supplement the textbook for my high school forensics class this year. After reading the book I decided to ask my principal to order enough books for my entire class. I think this book is on a very high interest subject and it also contains a lot of factual information. I'm confidant that my students will be as interested in reading the book as I was.

In general I was impressed with the short case studies presented in this book. I especially liked the headings for each case study that gave the significance of the case for modern day forensics.

4 out of 5 stars The Casebook of Forensic Detection.......2004-12-28

If you like the hit TV show "CSI", then you're bound to love this casebook of forensic detection. In this exciting volume of logic and suspense, Colin Evans shows "How Science Solved 100 of the World's most Baffling Crimes." You don't have to be a scientist to follow the logic that investigators used to solve these difficult cases. Anyone in high school can pick up this anthology and enjoy learning about some of the world's most baffling felonies.
In this novel, the crimes are broken up into different chapters based on how the crimes were solved. This allows the reader to learn about some more uncommon areas of study like ballistics, the study of firearms and bullets. Early on, ballistic experts learned that bullets fired from different guns have different marks on their surfaces due to how barrels are manufactured. This greatly helped detectives in the case of "Charles Stielow." When the investigators found that the murder weapon produced bullets with different marks then the bullets fired from Stielow's gun, it proved the accused was innocent.
Throughout these cases, many experts in different fields applied their knowledge to solve these difficult cases. Specialists in odontology, (teeth), serology, (blood), and toxicology (poisons), are often not the first people that come to mind when thinking about criminal cases. Yet Colin shows how these specialties have helped to solve the world's more twisted, and interesting, cases.
Famous cases are also revealed in this historic casebook. Have you ever heard of the Hitler diaries? Sacco and Vanzetti? Lindbergh? Evans shows the science of the investigations to find these criminal masterminds. Many "firsts" can also be read, which set the stage for solving the cases in today's world.
Each of the cases in this anthology bring their own twists and turns to this exciting documentation. The easy to read format allows high school readers from all backgrounds to enjoy learning the science behind our world's exciting criminal investigations. This novel teaches a lot about forensics while capturing its reader's attention through all 100 thrilling investigations.

      Book Description

The organization of working time in advanced industrial nations is currently in the midst of a profound shift away from standard hours and toward greater flexibility and diversity of schedules. This shift has major implications for industrial relations systems, the relative power of employers and unions, and the politics of labor markets and gender equity.

This volume explores the broad significance of these developments cross-nationally in Europe, the United States, and Japan. The essays examine technological, and market changes that place a premium on greater flexibility, the successes and limits of trade union campaigns for shorter standard hours as a response to employment crises in the 1970s and 1980s, the impact of reducing standard work hours upon leisure time, the increasing diversity of employee preferences, and the decline in the male norm's influence on working time and working life. Developments in part-time and temporary work, as well as more innovative policies in parental leave, job sharing, and flexible retirement, are analyzed. Placing these developments in broad historical and theoretical perspective, the authors reveal the centrality of time as a contested terrain of workplace and gender politics.

Working Time in Transition elucidates the underlying structural and political conflicts that lead to changes in working time regimes in Western nations and Japan. It will be of interest to employers, union leader, state and federal policy makers, economists, and corporation and union researchers.

        Book Description

The Economics of Knowledge Sharing claims that useful economic knowledge is the most important foundation for the development of a sufficiently strong process of innovation. Within the framework of new institutional economics, the book looks at the institutional conditions required for the interactive sharing and dissemination of knowledge in the development of economies. It outlines in four distinct parts the complex societal process of human interaction by which knowledge is effectively generated and used.

The book first considers knowledge sharing institutions, differentiating between types of interaction and types of actors. Secondly, it examines the economic role of knowledge and cognition, asking how and why human actors gather knowledge. It goes on to revisit historical questions of knowledge and embeds them within the contemporary debate, before finally reflecting on the significant relationship between technology and knowledge sharing in the digital age.

Opening up a new area of research encompassing the institutional framework of the innovation process, this pathbreaking volume will be of enormous interest to a wide-ranging audience including economists in the fields of theory, innovation research, new institutional economics, evolutionary economics, history of economic thought, and education policy. As knowledge sharing interactions are akin to other kinds of competition aside from economic, this book will also be warmly welcomed by social and political scientists specializing in a variety of related topics.

I wonder what people like Truth@Smart.Net, who wrote negative reviews of this book, think NOW, now that "Y2K" has turned into an absolute NON-event? Kudoes to Mr. Hunt for his calm debunking of hysterical myths!

3 out of 5 stars Refutes Y2K hysteria but still believes in the Second Coming.......1999-12-22

When the Y2K problem first became public knowledge computer programmers told of many disasters that would occur on 2000 Jan 1 because computers used two-digit years. Several books with alarmist and even biblically apocalyptic themes came out, and the media took advantage of this. So here we have a book which does a needed service: refute some of this madness. I especially liked when he quotes North as saying that institutions that use 99 to mean end of run will fail on 1998 July 1, which came by without hardly a ripple (p. 228). If he so correctly points out the hazards of alarmism regarding Y2K, then why does he persist in saying that a Second Coming according to the Bible will occur anyway? The book is strewn with Bible quotations that relate little to the Y2K problem. Still, there are a lot of people who believe that the Bible is the truth, despite its many contradictions, and maybe this book will help by getting across to them regarding the Y2K problem.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a double dose of stress relieving facts.......1999-08-02

"Y2K A Reasoned Response to Mass Hysteria" had me dropping the book and running to my computer to verify what I had read. First was a statement released by the Department of Defense stating their Y2K compliance. Second, to investigate the release of the movie "Y2K" starring Chris O'Donnall.

Dave hunt shows off his talent playing devils advocate "Remember these dire warnings come not from a few fanatics but from a host of experts...the stockmarket will crash and the world will sink into a great depression." (29) Hunt vividly displays a world where chaos rules all. In alignment with mayor reporting agencies he paints a picture of cities with no power, no heat, no phones, no vehicles, and no food. Where will we turn to fulfill our basic needs? Then in a great juxtaposition he piles up the evidence to silence the alarmists. Pointing out technology leaders such as Hewlett Packard and National Semiconductor who have been compliant for years Hunt crushes the opposition.

This book has defeated all the rumors from the Christen right wings view of Biblical Armageddon and the coming of the Antichrist to the libral views of an international plot for the New World Order. "Y2K A Reasoned Response to a Mass Hysteria" is a double dose of stress relieving facts.

5 out of 5 stars A truly biblical and common sense response to mass hysteria.......1999-05-21

Dave Hunt tells it like it is! This book is biblically sound and extremely factual. Y2K has been hyped up so much that many people are truly panicking. In this book, Dave explains from Scripture, why the panic and fear is unfounded. Trusting in God's provision, taking necessary precautions--like you would do in a snowstorm, tornado, flood, etc. is the answer to the mass hysteria. Y2K: A Reasoned Response to Mass Hysteria is a must for everyone--especially the people who believe the world will end on January 1,2000! Common sense preparedness is always better than panic. Panic breeds fear. I believe, after reading Dave's book, that most of the panic will be caused by the "alarmists" and not by the Y2K bug itself (which really isn't a bug anyway)! Biblically accurate and Christ-centered with lots of common sense! Highly recommended!

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT let this be the only book you read on Y2K!.......1999-05-19

While I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Hunt's dedication to orthodox Christianity and agree with him on some subjects, I found this book was seriously lacking in-depth research. My copy has pencil marks on virtually every other page. While he makes some valid points, his overall thesis is unsubstantiated by the facts he presents. There are many facts that were not presented in the book that would have served to negate his ultimate conclusions. I am a member of the Washington DC Y2K Group and know personally many of the individuals Mr. Hunt quotes. There is ample evidence to support some level of personal preparedness for Y2K. Each of us should decide what degree of preparation is suitable given our circumstances. Wisdom dictates that this issue be studied thoroughly by reading several books or browsing the internet for Y2K-related information. This issue reminds me of Pascal's wager. In this case we have little to lose by not preparing at least minimally, yet we have potentially everything to lose by not preparing at all. In Mr. Hunt's May issue of The Berean Call newsletter he says that Senator Robert Bennett "now admits that Y2K at worst will be a mere "bump in the road."" While it is true that the Senator used that phraseology, had Mr. Hunt been at the May WDCY2K Group meeting he would have heard Sen. Bennett explain that while he did use the expression, he never said how high that bump would be nor how great a jolt we might receive from it! There was laughter in the room following the Senator's comment, but it was a sobering chuckle at best.

Curt Smith takes a stunningly simple idea and executes it in an obvious format: assemble the Homers of baseball and let them rip. The result is an oral history of the game delivered with the crispness and color of the voices in the broadcast booth whose day--and night--job is to bring us the game. There are giants at work here: Mel Allen, Jack Brickhouse, Curt Gowdy, and Ernie Harwell. There are newer voices, too--Bob Costas, Tim McCarver, and John Miller among them--but The Storytellers truly belongs to the sounds of the past brought into the present. Allen on Mickey Mantle is wonderfully stirring, as is Gowdy on Ted Williams. Funny when it wants to be, and poignant without forcing nostalgia, The Storytellers is a bit like coming home, turning on the radio, and hearing the comfortable and exuberant sounds of childhood passion. The writing is a reminder of why, in an era of cold corporate ownership and player greed, the game survives in the heart and somehow endures.

                        Book Description

4 out of 5 stars Great Stories, Great Storytellers.......2002-04-25

The stories are varied, entertaining, and required reading for anyone that enjoys listening to baseball on the radio while sitting on their porch on a warm summer's evening. I could have done without Curt Smith's introduction to each chapter, as his over-the-top prose didn't seem to fit with the simplicity of the language of the anectdotes.
From coast to coast, this is a winner. New Yorkers will be particularly fond, however, of the pre-California baseball tales.

                        4 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable........1999-07-28

Curt Smith gathers some of the legendary Voices of baseball together to (what else?) tell stories. The anecdotes are invarably interesting, funny, moving, and illuminating, whether or not the reader has actually had the pleasure of listening to any or all of these broadcasters. My only quibble with this book is that author Smith seems to have lifted several passages in toto from his earlier, and even more fascinating, "Voices Of The Game." This seems like unnecessary duplication and can be mildly annoying for those of us who've read both. Still, it's well worth the time of anybody who loves the Summer Game.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for baseball lovers like myself!!.......1999-02-12

I saw this book on amazon.com and knew I had to get it. Great stories inside the game and behing the broadcast booth. Couldn't put it down, just spectacular, wish there was a sequel!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Collection of Great Baseball Stories.......1997-11-08

The Storytellers is a hillarious and moving collection of baseball stories told by the people who have held our ears for decades. The funniest stories (Ernie Harwell explaining to a baseball usher that it wasn't beer he had spilled . . .)had my wife and I laughing out loud. The most moving (Bob Costas boyhood visit to Yankee stadium) still bring a tear to my eye. A must read for fans of baseball, fans of broadcasting, or fans of oral storytelling. This is a wonderful book to read aloud.

Browsers, e-mail programs, or online services turn out even E-MAIL FOR DUMMIES. But they might hit electronic snags: updates might be stored like files so channels missing updates while the computer is disconnected might freeze or lock the screen by updating with the reconnection. There might be online rush hours and waiting lines: conferencing goes faster with the less error-checking ASCII text files and slower with executable and image binary files. Computer glitches might hold up messages between different systems. There might also be a lack of privacy: employers might read messages without employees agreeing or knowing and without breaking any laws. There might even be a lack of security: Active X controls might interact with the Active X support feature in a web browser to locate and upload financial information from a computer. Messages might be intercepted while passing through multiuser and network-connected computers without firewalls and randomly selected private and public keys or pass phrases or words; or while printing to remote laser printers. Messages might not delete because they copy across computers and might end up archived on computer backup tapes.
