Book Description
The capstone of a brilliant scholar's lifelong work to establish the literary identity of the Bible, in an elegant, slipcased hardcover.
Through a distinguished career of critical scholarship and translation, Robert Alter has equipped us to read the Hebrew Bible as a powerful, cohesive work of literature. The culmination of this work, Alter's masterly new translation and probing commentary combine to give contemporary readers the definitive edition of The Five Books.
Alter's majestic translation recovers the mesmerizing effect of these ancient storiesthe profound and haunting enigmas, the ambiguities of motive and image, and the distinctive cadences and lovely precision of the Hebrew text. Other modern translations either recast these features for contemporary clarity, thereby losing the character of the original, or fail to give readers a suitably fluid English as a point of contact. Alter's translation conveys the music and the meaning of the Hebrew text in a lyrical, lucid English. His accompanying commentary illuminates the text with learned insight and reflection on its literary and historical dimensions.
Customer Reviews:
Gross Omissions.......2007-05-31
This is not a comment on the substance of Dr Alter's translation. I opened it today for comparative study; I own three other versions of The Five Books. To my dismay, I find no Parashat-Named Headings, none; merely Chapter Headings, and Bk Chapt.#s at the top of each page. I sought refuge in the index. There is no index! I have read many reviews and comments of this work and none, not one, mentioned this glaring omission. For a layman as myself I find this book too tedius to bother with, other than when I go to another version for the missing information. It is beyond my comprehension how this highly praised book by a masterful author could be published without the norms I have mentioned.
Very Helpful Commentary.......2007-01-10
I've been using this text as part of a Bible Study I conduct. The commentary is primarily a translator's. What I mean by that is that it's not mainly a theological commentary, but one which seeks to understand the Hebrew text and explain how the translator sees the text. I like that insofar as what I'm looking for is an attempt at an accurate translation rather than as someone promoting his own theological agenda. If you're looking for theological interpretations, then this commentary would be of limited interest. The primary goal is to render an accurate literary translation of the Hebrew and to offer some archeological/ancient cultural commentary. I can see this text useful regardless of whether it's used by Jews or Christians.
Pleasant Reading.......2006-11-10
Not a completely new translation. Not a language study. Torah nicely written with recommendable commentary. Hebrew is much more picturesque and alive than any translation I have ever seen. Although MANY liberties are taken, the translation is more picturesque and more accurate to the actual meaning (very opinionated) than others. The translation is easy to like.
wonderful translation.......2006-11-05
This is a wonderful translation of the Pentateuch. Alter's style of translation and the commentary on every verse is just astounding. I will continue using it for study and personal devotions for years to come.
not for me, but certainly has its merits .......2006-10-10
If you want a primarily literary guide to the Torah, this book is certainly well done. And for non-Jews and nonbelievers who want nothing more, this is probably pretty good.
If you want something more historically minded, this book occasionally has some good points- but I think Richard Elliot Friedman's commentary and the Conservative movement's Etz Chaim are better.
If you want a week-by-week guide to the Torah portion, this book does not compare favorably with any of the religiously-oriented Chumashes (the Hertz Chumash, the also-Orthodox Artscroll, or their Reform and Conservative competitors); it simply doesn't tell you very much about the Judaism that evolved from the Torah. But to be fair, it doesn't try to.
Book Description
"No serious Bible reader--whether Jewish, Christian, or secular--can afford to ignore this volume."
--Jon D. Levenson, Harvard Divinity School
This translation is a stunning achievement--to read it is to hear the Bible as if for the first time. While other English translations of the Bible render its language as if it had been written in English, this new translation re-creates the full force of the Bible's original rhetoric and poetry--its rhythms, nuances, and stylistic devices--allowing the English reader to experience the spiritual and aesthetic power of the Bible's own voice while recovering layers of meaning that are missed entirely in conventional translations.
Everett Fox has devoted twenty-five years to this unique approach to Bible translation. Based on principles developed by Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig, this new English translation restores the poetics of the Hebrew original--the echoes, allusions, alliterations, and word-plays that rhetorically underscore its meaning and are intrinsic to a text meant to be read aloud and heard.
Widely praised by Bible scholars and theologians of every denomination, the publication of the first volume of The Schocken Bible is a major religious, scholarly, and literary event. Together with its extensive commentary and illuminating notes, this unique translation draws the reader closer to the authentic living voice of the Bible.

The Five Books of Moses.......2007-09-15
Our Disciple Bible Study used the first version of this book in our Basic Resource Library. When the original book "went missing" we had to reorder, and discovered to our delight that the new book now included The Five Books of Moses. What a wonderful resource for Bible study, or personal use! It has become one of my favorites and I plan to purchase the next volumes as well.
Excellent.......2007-08-21
I used to say that it was pointless to try to study the Bible without Hebrew - that it was impossible to "feel" the text, to get the humor, the irony, the poetry. Not anymore. This is a must for any student of the Bible, as it captures the liveliness and strangeness of the original and expose it as the allusive, alliterative, jabberwocky text that it is.
Hebrew is best, but this is, finally, a good second choice. It would be perfect if it had Hebrew written alongside - a great way to learn for students.
Not your grandfather's translation--but essential.......2007-06-07
This is not the only edition with English translation of the Pentateuch/Chumash that I own, and I don't think it's the only one anyone should own, but it is an essential part of my collection. Fox has combined precision in translation with interpretation and poetry, and the combination makes me run to it very often to see his version, which often makes a challenging and provocative comparison to more traditional translations. The type is large and well-spaced. My only criticism is that the Hebrew is not included; at times I'd like to be able to compare the original words to Fox's renderings, to see how they compare.
A top-notch commentary........2007-01-22
This is the only Torah Commentary that I have bought thus far.
After reading the reviews and finding a great price on the H/C in Amazon Marketplace I bought it.
It is hard for me to imagine a better commentary on the Five Books of Moses.
The print is large enough for easy reading.
Everett Fox uses the Hebrew names throughout the book.
He points out that most English translations convey the idea of the text and translate out the sound.
The Translater's Preface is well done and explains the background of this translation.
I really like the Introductions to each book. Footnotes are plentiful and beneficial to the reader.
Another feature that I appreciate is the Guide to the Pronunciation of Hebrew Names. This is very helpful if you are like me and know little Hebrew.
This book is a refreshing read and I highly recommend it!!
This translation echos the real meaning behind these books.......2006-04-17
I have been studying the various aspects of the "Abrahamic" religions for a few years (Jewish, Christian, Islamic). I am fascinated by the grand debate among them and how it is based on interpretations of millennia old documents translated and retranslated with political intent, gender and social bias.
My first revelation came when I began reading the Schocken Bible, Volume One (The Five Books of Moses), a direct translation from the ancient Hebrew into English using modern language to express our ancestor's thoughts.
It struck me as much more lyrical and poetic than the obtuse words of the King James version. And more importantly, it reads like the documentation of an ancient oral tradition passed to us from the early days of man's civilization.
So these profound words come forth, from the ancient past, and we see them not for the guidance and connection to our ancestors, but use them for our silly social clubs. We create organizations, establish symbols, and interpret the words into complex rules. But the basic message and social conduct it wants to express is lost.
I suggest anyone who wants to find the real meaning of these books read this translation. The message is still there.

Book Description
In order to get a fair share of the growing international leisure travel business, one should understand where it's coming from, why these travelers are seeking U.S. destinations, and what their specific needs are? By working with a U.S. - based "receptive operator", domestic suppliers (hotels, bus companies, restaurants, or attractions) are able to get a piece of the action without having to incur huge travel and marketing expenses.
Receptive operators are able to bring business to the United States from around the world, 365 days a year. This increasingly steady flow is highly lucrative, and one can get it by following a few simple guidelines.
Customer Reviews:
An Essential Educational Tool!!!.......2001-11-30
I have always enjoyed the way Marilyn Reis has been able to convey the fundamentals of the International Receptive Market in her presentations. I am really happy to see that she finally put "pen to paper" to share this knowledge with the tourism industry! This book is clear, concise, and an easy read for those short on time(Who isn't these days?). For novices to the market, I think it is an essential item on the reading list. Even those who have been in the market for several years should read this just for the nice refresher it provides (You never know...you just might pick up on something that you have accidentally gotten away from, or get affirmation from an industry leader that you are doing something right!).
Bottom Line: If you are involved in international tourism sales and marketing in any way, you should read this book!

As it happens, that little dog that got nuked in the microwave was named Vince. That's one of the priceless details Ann Fiery has added to breathe new life into 25 old stories in The Completely and Totally True Book of Urban Legends. The tanning-booth disaster becomes a tragedy of suburban banality, the hydrogen beer fiasco levels a city, and subtle anti-American sentiments find expression in a simple toothbrush. Fiery's prose is sharp and engaging, her characterization lively, and her pacing brilliant. Artist Mark Ulriksen captures the essence of each tale with a creepy (if often quite funny) painting that leers from a facing page. The retelling of these legends in short-short story form forces the reader to think about how they hold our interest, why we love to hear and spread them, and why so many are about dogs. --Rob Lightner
Customer Reviews:
Did You Hear the One About . . . .?.......2001-12-19
Caution: This book contains some crude language that is not necessary to convey the themes in The Completely and Totally True Book of Urban Legends.
The author has taken an interesting and unusual direction in this book, developing stories around the concept that "urban legends are our fairy tales . . . ." You've heard all of the stories, no doubt, about what has been served at various restaurant chains. Those are urban legends. The stories are probably not literally true (or at least no one can prove them), but they do express concepts of what we need to be cautious about in life. For example, Little Red Riding Hood was not literally true (unless wolves are a lot different from the ones I have seen) but it conveyed warnings about being careful about assuming too much (the wolf was not grandma) and following advice that seems against your best interest (let me show you my big teeth).
In that same spirit, Ms. Fiery has created "a treasury of our best urban legends . . . most exciting, beloved, and morally laden tales. . . ." But they need to be rewritten, because they are "the uncut gems of our literary heritage." In the book, the urban legends are dressed up to be more like written short stories, and to be more plausible.
The concept is an interesting one, and I enjoyed reading the book. I must admit that I had only heard of one of these urban legends before reading this book. Perhaps I have been out in the suburbs too long!
I found that some of the stories worked much better than others. In some, the detail built the story. In others, the detail either directed you away from the story or was irrelevant. The illustrations are attractive, but sometimes they telegraphed where the story was going too soon. If you already knew the urban legend, you would already know where the story was going. I would have preferred to have been surprised.
I thought the best two stories were "Old Dog, New Tricks" about a man, his dog, and a lady in an elevator, and "Babysitter's Club" about a haunted house that scares all of the babysitters.
I also enjoyed "Warm as Toast" (a woman helps her dog dry off), "Such Clean Floors" (life support equipment keeps failing in a hospital), "The Flying Gypsy Trick" (traveling in Greece), "Fiat Lux" (about a driving lesson), "LigHt Beer" (new properties of the latest ale), and "Hot Potato" (a doctor having trouble diagnosing his patient's problem).
On the other hand, more than half of the stories didn't work very well for me. They seemed either implausible, uninteresting, or gross . . . rather than seeming like modern fairy tales. I graded the book down accordingly.
What jokes do you know that provide good lessons that we all should follow? What stories that are too good to be true actually capture essential truths, nonetheless?
Get the point!
Book Description
No musical genre has had a more controversial critical history than the concerto, but has simultaneously retained as consistently prominent a place in the affections of the concert-going public. This volume is one of a very few to deal with the genre in its entirety. Setting the concerto in its musical and non-musical contexts, it examines the concertos that have made important contributions to musical culture, and reviews performance-related topics.

Book Description
Part of Praeger's Media and Society Series, this contributed volume is the only collection of essays on television authorship. It includes work of some of the most prominent scholars in television studies. Rather than assigning one author to individual television texts, the contributors probe the relationship between the various authors at work within the institutional, cultural, and economic settings that characterize the television industry. This book analyzes and defines the unique methods of television authorship and suggests numerous candidates for authorial accountability allowing the medium to enter the realm of contemporary criticism. The first part of the volume provides a case study in four chapters on authorship issues surrounding Frank's Place, the short lived but compelling situation comedy. This is followed by three chapters focusing on issues of authorship in international television. The book then probes the studio's role as author, including esays on Warner Brothers, Desilu, and Screen Gems. Finally the contributors examine individual TV authors and cover such topics as point of view in music video, television production as collective action, and unconventional television.

Customer Reviews:
Great introductory course on how to make real world video.......2005-01-05
I bought the first edition 2 years ago and then the second edition to keep up with new changes because this book is a very good and complete introductory course on making real world video (i.e. starting from choosing DV camcorders to final production and delivery to the world depending on your budget).
It starts from current DV technology (like CCD and DV formats) and then introduces various DV camcorder types depending whether you are normal consumer or pro-sumer or professional users. (It even shows you the approximate price range for various camcorder class.)
It then introduces how scripts planning should be like for making different scenes of video (newscast or documentary or movie). It teaches different techniques of shooting pictures/video by cameras/comcorders (angles, views, lighting and audio control). I likes the book giving you various examples of lighting equipments and audio equipments required for making good video.
For movie pre-production process, it tells what kind of production crews and things you will need and do for different stages (including cost ranges). For movie post-production process, it shows how to edit all movie and audio footages into final movies and how to fix video/audio problems. It also describes what types of movie editing systems (computers, hardware equipments and software video applications) available in the market depending on high-end, mid-range, or low-end production and budgets. It also describes how the final process of movie copies are generated and delivered to the world.
I like the book because it gives me pretty good ideas how DV movies are made with real equipments that are availalbe in the current market. This book is highly recommended especially for serious beginning DV/movie producers.
Digital Dynamite!.......2003-05-23
This book took me into a whole new World. I sure could have used it before I bought my used BetaCam! Now I can work quicker, cleaner, look like a pro and save $$$. The furture of film making is here. Thanks guys!
a crash course in how to make your DV production easier.......2003-04-15
This book should be required reading for anyone making a digital movie with more ambition than experience. This book will be worth its cost in just the first project by eliminating many of the learning mistakes we all make. I wish someone would have sat down with me and given me this advice when I started and yet, even with many projects behind me, this book offers me new ideas. Reading the book and the watching the DVD are like having real work experience - both in production and post-production. In one memorable section of the DVD, Pete Shaner sits down with you and gives you lots of advice on how to shoot and things to consider in shooting and editing.
All of the detail hurdles in making a movie.......2003-03-23
As the prices of digital data capture and storage have dropped, new avenues of artistic creation have opened up. One of these areas is in the realm of digital video, where it is possible to make movies using simple and relatively inexpensive digital equipment. However, the fact that the equipment is now cheap does not make it any easier to make movies that people would want to watch. There is an enormous amount of subtle technique involved in making a movie, and until I read this book, I had absolutely no idea how complex a simple shot can be. This is a book that will show you how to make a digitally recorded movie, and should be the first thing you read if that is your aspiration.
It all starts with planning, from the initial idea, on to budgeting, clearing all legal hurdles, organizing and shooting the scenes, editing and cleaning the stored scenes, and ending with publicizing and distributing the finished product. All are so complex, that you do not make a movie, you survive its' creation. The fact that the movie can now be stored on digital devices only significantly affects one of these steps.
Written primarily for those who are interested in making DV projects for entertainment, this is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. The number of detail hurdles that need to be cleared to make a movie are astounding, and kudos to the authors for explaining all of those hurdles in great detail.
Digital Video Reference Book and DVD for All Earthlings!.......2003-01-08
Highly recommended reading...for the home hobbyist...the USC film student...the software geek... or AV professional.
The authors approach the Digital Video Universe in a real world, common sense and entertaining prose...allowing the reader to apply their level of interest, budget, technical background, project objectives and pace to a surprisingly current and comprehensively deep offering of digital video material.
The supportive DVD is awesome!

Customer Reviews:
Not so well organized.......2007-03-02
I should have gone to a bookstore and looked at the books on Final Cut Express, but based on the reviews I thought this one would be great.
First of all, it deals with Final Cut Express 1.0.1. That's not the current version - so if you're buying FCX now, much of the info about drop-down menus and set-up will not apply to your software.
The book is very thorough in describing how to use FCX, but you have to read several paragraphs of explanation in order to figure out what you should do. The book would be more user friendly if it had charts or some way of summarizing the practical instructions. Right now the instructions are buried in paragraphs of explanation. I spent several hours just learning how to set up the initial preferences because it took so long to wade through all the info.
My suggestion: Use the DVD that comes with FCX to get a feel for what it can do, and then use the Help function when you need to figure out something new. This book is incredibly thorough and I may use it in the future, but for now it's easier to use the Help function and Google any questions I have.
Clear and concise.......2006-11-03
Charles Roberts has for my money written the best introductions to both Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express. If you want to get up to speed with either of these programs in a miminal amount of time, this is the book to get. It's something even a mother could understand!
A practical and highly recommended instructional.......2004-01-12
Digital Video Editing With Final Cut Express by Charles Roberts (Assistant Professor, communications Media Department, Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg, Massachusetts) is a practical and highly recommended instructional and reference manual concerning how to use Apple's Final Cut Express editing software for optimum digital video results. Covering not only the software interface, but such issues as proper setup of Macintosh and Final Cut Express, an explanation of video hardware, means for troubleshooting a wide variety of problems and much more, Digital Video Editing With Final Cut Express combines black-and-white illustrations and screenshots with easy-to-follow narration to better instruct and draw out the skill and creativity of amateur and professional digital film makers alike.
a valuable book for any NLE user.......2003-11-17
Charles Roberts' "Digital Video Editing with Final Cut Express" is more than just another software manual. His insight into MAC OS and organizing workflow is invaluable to even the most experienced NLE user and the appendices clearly explain complicated technical concepts behind digital video and the hardware needed to create a working system for editing. I am already 'sold' on Apple's Final Cut Pro but Roberts' conversational style of writing and solid technical knowledge make an already accessible software even more so.
Easy to read intro to the basics and beyond.......2003-11-05
You won't go wrong with this book! It assumes no knowledge and takes you through the whole editing process. The appendixes alone, with advice on purchasing DV decks, the hardware you need for setup, plus tips and tricks makes it worth the price. I also feel more confident as an editor--the book covers Express as the vehicle for teaching about editing principles. It goes beyond the usual button pushing software books.
