I am a water efficiency consultant. I am fascinated and amazed by the magical beauty of water. But I also recognize that there are many scientific principles that govern the behavior of water. That science does not detract from the beauty and mystery of water for me. I do not need to throw science out the window to appreciate that beauty but apparently many others do. I once watched a 2 hour slide show and talk by Mr. Emoto, hoping to ask questions. He refused to take any questions afterwards, even though I had plenty. Where are the side by side comparisons of the ice structure of the same water that did not have the word or picture influences? Until similar photos are created with a control group and with the involvement of neutral 3rd party scientists, I can not believe any of the claims. But I will always have a childlike amazement at the endless beauty and mystery of water.

But I thing it's time to open our minds for the new experiments. The scientists who desagree, they must propose new experiments to refuse.
It's time to people learn that our feelings and thoughts influence matter. All of the atoms and subparticles are vibrating all the time and our thoughts and emotions are vibration too. For Christmas I would ask for things like The Invisible Man, a clear plastic replica of the human body with organs that I spent hours painting to match the real organs. I asked for a chemistry set and a biology set. I spent countless hours of bliss looking at everything from dirt to skin under the microscope. I was obsessed with what was "inside." I wanted to know how everything worked. My mom couldn't understand how I could spend hours dissecting the frog that came in my biology set. The smell of formaldehyde, which preserved the frog in its tiny jar, permeated our kitchen for over a year. She was not too pleased when I ruined her best kitchen knife because I wanted to see what was inside Goldie the goldfish-after it died of course. But she finally put her foot down when I came home with a dead cat in my red Radio Flyer wagon.

During the past two decades, wages of skilled workers in the United States rose while those of unskilled workers fell; less-educated young men in particular have suffered unprecedented losses in real earnings. These twelve original essays explore whether this trend is unique to the United States or is part of a general growth in inequality in advanced countries.
Focusing on labor market institutions and the supply and demand forces that affect wages, the papers compare patterns of earnings inequality and pay differentials in the United States, Australia, Korea, Japan, Western Europe, and the changing economies of Eastern Europe. Cross-country studies examine issues such as managerial compensation, gender differences in earnings, and the relationship of pay to regional unemployment.
From this rich store of data, the contributors attribute changes in relative wages and unemployment among countries both to differences in labor market institutions and training and education systems, and to long-term shifts in supply and demand for skilled workers. These shifts are driven in part by skill-biased technological change and the growing internationalization of advanced industrial economies.

National Lampoon Totally True Facts is a very funny collection of some of the best real life headlines, signs, advertisements, and personals you will ever see. The context is often off-color, so I cannot repeat most of the obvious double entendres here.
To give you a flavor of the items that I can repeat, here goes:
Headline: "Commissioner David to Head `Assault on Literacy Month'";
Personal ad: "Person who's putting clawmarks on my husbands back, would you please doctor him or lay off one."
Advertising headline: "Get involved with drugs before your children do.";
Neon sign outside of bar: "Cocktails AA";
Sign on building: "No handguns or unsterilized bedding.";
Employment ad: "Pier 34 Is Not Hiring!" with details of when to apply;
Headline: "Brain bypass surgery ineffective.";
Sign: "No restroom privileges in phone booth.";
Sign: "Rare, Out-of-Print & Non-Existent Books";
Sign: "Broadmoor Apartments -- the brilliant alternative to living.";
Sign: "L.S.D. Kennels";
Sign: "Live Bait" with arrow pointing towards cemetery.
Most of the examples are produced one to a page with a brief caption to set up the joke. The book's main weaknesses are that the reproduction quality of the images is very low quality so they are often hard to examine, and some of the jokes are repeated a bit too often -- especially the ones about colloquial names for male sexual equipment. The book lacks any essay or other commentary to provide a perspective for what all of this means.
My interpretation is that many people imagine the message they are sending without fully capturing what the message actually says. This is a typical problem of human miscommunication. The malapropism and type tendencies are probably compounded by the fact that we often subtly associate one thing subconsciously with another. Finally, we have too much reverence for the printed word . . . rather than seeing it as a convenient way to express ideas and messages, many of which are faulty.
Be sure you read aloud whatever you write. You'll be surprised by what you have literally created . . . that didn't appear strange on the written page.

Not being much of a Slipknot fan, I wasn't expecting much from this book. Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised. It's very in-depth in regards to how this band came to be & chronicles its success quite well. It provides a look into the their personal lives as well as their public persona. A sprinkling of the McIver trademark humor is always a good thing. Even though I don't much care for the band this is indeed a good read. I'm to the point now where I look forward to reading Joels books, no matter the subject.

Excellent Bobby Darin History.......2007-05-31
This book is different from the other biographies on Bobby Darin. More dedicated to the history of how and why things happened with albums and songs. Bleiel did a good job of giving information of Bobby's friends and peers to insight of who BD was in the recording studio. Gives a better biography on LP's and singles continuing past the DiOrio run down of LP's.
A lighter read than Evaniers biography. Reading it a second time.

This book, I do not recomend, it is nothing compared to the book Bobby Darin by Al Diorio, Al has everything in his book that you need to know about Bobby, including the names of all songs he wrote and recored and also movies he was in.

Probably the closest to the bible on Bobby Darin and his music and life. I've read them all and this one is at the top of the list, a real in depth look at the career of this late, great performer!!

This invaluable book describes Darin's professional output. For info on his fascinating personal life, read Dream Lovers. For details on his equally fascinating professional life this is the book.
It has some omissions, e.g., unknown songs performed on some TV shows, and even seems to be missing some TV appearances (e.g., some Carson episodes and the English "This is Bobby Darin" special to name a couple), but it's as complete a reference as we're going to find for the present. And it was written when info on Darin was harder to come by than it is now (thanks in part to Kevin Spacy). I hope future editions are published and fill in some of the holes.

Well, if you have absolutely NO experience with OOP and were looking for a good book to help you learn it . . . don't get this. :P
I think most of the practices in this book are poor. For example, and this is simply personaly opinion, there is a section on using a data access layer that they wrote (I think it stinks). Hardly a very good DAL in my opinion. The thing I don't like about it is when they tell you to use it from other layers, you still have to know about this concept of SQLServer, connection strings, stored procedures, and parameters, and that is just lame. When I write a DAL, I abstract that stuff out. How in the world would I cleanly swap my DAL out if I wanted to go from SQL Server to Oracle?! Well, using their techniques it seems that I would have to go through the code in my other layers and change quite a bit . . . Horrible!
Then, when they talk about using a security layer, they say this: "Our first thought was to create the security layer and have ASP.NET developers simply place code to check the login status at the top of each page. This approach is fraught with problems because it places the responsibility on the developer to work out the security on each page and include it." So, what do they do 2 paragraphs later? Tell you to put this header control that will handle it into EVERY page: "All the developer needs to do is put the header on the page and the page is secure." Big deal, they abstract the security into one component, and then call that from this header. But the developer still needs to stick it in every page . . . (I personally would have used inheritence for this, but whatever works.)
All in all, I think this book is about 5% useful. Seems like a good article would have accomplished the same goal, I don't see that this book has much valuable information. Thankfully I didn't pay for it, just read it via O'Reilly's Safari Subscription service!
Putting it all together.......2003-12-03
The .Net framework is huge. After professionally developing several web projects I had the nuts and bolts pretty much nailed. However, putting it all together into a sound model/approach is tough.
I wish I'd read this book earlier on because it would have saved me a lot of pain. After you're past the novice stage and have a handle on the VB.Net syntax and object model, this book is the next step. It contains lots of code snippets and you can download their entire code library used to build the sample apps but the real key here is learning a sound methology.
One review was critical of their approach. I disagree with his comments. This book offers not only a sound approach to application design using .Net (with some concentration on web development), n-tier architecture is accepted practice. The book offers a sound VB.Net implementation. Of course, it's hardly the only way and is a tad simplistic for the real world intranet apps I'm working on. But it should help intermediate programmers put it all together to move to the next level.
My only complaint is that I wish it contained more code details, some broader coverage, and was more advanced. But that's a personal gripe because by the time I'd picked this up I'd personally grown past its content through the school of hard knocks.
#2 VB.NET book on my list.......2003-08-08
I have only read 9 books related to vb.net and most of them seem to be a copy of the MSDN library. This book is underrated but I found this book to be precise what I needed. It gives real world solutions, exploiting many of the .NET framework classes. While in other books only two or three chapters are of value this book is withinh the TOP on my list. This book is different because you are creating a full enterprise application, building different classes with specific purposes and then putting it together to have an End-product. It is this putting together that will help you understand the potentials of VB.NET
Great Foundation for Developement Standard.......2003-06-30
This book is now required by my development staff to read before developing .NET applications. The first is "Practical Standards for Microsoft Visual Basic .NET". This book picks up where the other has left off.
There are hundreds of ways to develop software, but Spencer, Eberhard and Alexander have done a great job illustrating one approach that is very practical for an enterprise enviroment. This book shows goes over many of the steps in software development and how to design the many tiers using .NET inheritance and reusing of code.
My company name is Wharton Computer Consulting and we have been developing software for nearly a decade. I have read over a hundred technical books and have over 20 Microsoft Certifications. This book will allow me to spend less time going over how code should be done. During my technical reviews I will be able to point to chapters in this book on how it should be done.
I have also taught at several university's and this will now be my recommended book for students interested in learning how to develop using .NET.
